About the Author Yung Wing, who was born in a village in southern China in 1828 and became the first Chinese person ever to be educated at a major US college, graduating from Yale in 1854. He returned to China and visited the Taiping rebel capital of Nanjing, giving active consideration to helping them in their struggle to overthrow the Manchu government. He was a part of the missionary Christian community of the United States, and a great believer in the strengths and benefits of Western civilization, but also fiercely patriotic and proud of being Chinese.

A fascinating autobiography of China's first U.S. college graduate By James Chan Yung Wing's book is a tale of an educated, bilingual Chinese patriot who loved China and his American Christian values. He was a rare product of a China in decline and an America on the rise. He wrote fondly of his missionary benefactors and his discovery of his talent in the English language. He parlayed his linguistic talent to try to change China -- a feat that struck many of his 19th-century peers as futile and foolhardy. Yet his lifelong obsession to give a Western education to young Chinese eventually bore fruits, if only 150 years later. Yung Wing would be gratified to know that China now sends more students to America than any other country, graduates more Ph.D. students than any, and publishes 11 percent of the world's scientific papers. His efforts were not wasted. He opened the door to a brave New World for his race. He set an example. His writing will reveal to you why he won contests in English compositions at Yale as the first Chinese boy educated in America. He was a true vanguard.

This is a book about the stories of the author Yung Wing his own. Yung Wing is famous, who is called the father of all Chinese students studied aboard. This book is extremely valuable for us all to get some knowledge about the recent history of China. In this book, we can meet with some very famous characters, such as Zeng Guofan, Li Hongzhang, Zhang Zhidong, Hua Henfang, Mark Twain, and so on, whom did Yung Wing have a lot of private stories talked about. In a word, through the presentation of this book talked about Yung Wing himself, I think everyone of us as a Chinese should give high respect to Yung Wing for what he had done for all of us and for the strength of our mother country China. Finally I would like recommend this wonderful book to every Chinese who loves their country.

The history of eighteen century China has always been quite remote and impersonal. But this book, narrated from a western-educated yet deeply involved Chinese perspective, gives me a sense of time-travelling. The lives of Chinese and the society of China during that period become live and real. It helps to understand historical events as well as the human mentalities first handed. I am very impressed by this book and would strongly recommend it to anybody who is into the Chinese history.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Good book By A. Corcoran I really enjoyed this book, it was a lot of different genres of short stories all mixed together really eloquently. This is an older book, so the language is a little different. I was glad i had a kindle because i had to use the built in dictionary a few times, which doesn't happen often. While everyone may not enjoy this, I'm sure many will. I don't personally believe in reincarnation, but it was still a really interesting book. And it's free. Here is a short summary of the plot.The book is about a professor that is in prison for murder in the early 1900s. He ends up in solitary confinement and after making some friends is taught to relive past lives. He uses this to escape the torture he is put through by the warden and in this book is supposedly writing his memoirs. He does get tortured quite a bit, if you don't want to read about torture, this book may not be for you.

The story kept you involved with the characters. I must tell you the story was disturbing to me, but I had to finish it because I was so drawn into the story. The Star Rover is about a man in prison whom the guards place in solitary confinement, and a strait jacket. It was disturbing to me because of the pain the guards inflicted upon the inmates. His fellow inmates inform him of the process of roving to stay alive while in the jacket.

A former professor of agronomics at the University of California, he was convicted of a murder he admittedly did commit. Once incarcerated, he is wrongly accused of a conspiracy to escape, and unjustly sentenced to solitary confinement. He spends five long years in solitary, during which he endures frequent beatings and long periods bound in a straitjacket. The near suffocating constriction of the jacket has an unexpected side effect. Over time, Standing develops the ability to separate his consciousness from his imprisoned body, enabling him to travel through time and space to experience past lives. Among the many personalities he inhabits while in the jacket are Count Guillaume de Saint-Maure, a swordsman of medieval France; Jesse Fancher, a nine-year-old member of a wagon train crossing Utah in 1857; a nameless 4th-century hermit in Egypt; Adam Strang, a 16th century Englishman, supposedly the first white man to set foot in Korea; Ragnar Lodbrog, a Norse-born Roman centurion in the service of Pontius Pilate; Daniel Foss, a seal hunter shipwrecked on an Antarctic isle in the early 19th century; and a series of prehistoric tribesmen representative of various ages of mankind's distant past. In his death row cell, Standing compiles a manuscript detailing the biographies of these past lives, as well as the harsh conditions he endures at San Quentin.The Star Rover, also known as The Jacket, was published in 1915. Though considered a novel, the book really reads more like a collection of short stories loosely tied together by the prison narrative. Like most of Jack London's work in the genre of science fiction, it is audaciously imaginative and years ahead of its time, yet it may have been conceived simply as an opportunity for London to try his hand at historical fiction. While the Kiplingesque tale in Korea and the wilderness survival tale of the shipwrecked sailor seem right at home within his body of work, the swashbuckling French story seems more fitting to Alexandre Dumas, while the tale of the Roman soldier is reminiscent of Lew Wallace's Ben-Hur. London seems to relish the opportunity to cast his net so far afield, but he achieves mixed results. There is little cohesion between the various lives or with the prison story that frames them. In the penultimate chapter, London tries to tie everything together with a sweeping panorama of the history of mankind, interwoven with his philosophy of the meaning of life. While the conclusions he reaches in this chapter are arguable, the power and mastery of his writing is undeniable. It's as grandiose and hyperbolic as anything he's ever written, straddling the line between genius and mania.Fans of London will enjoy this book because it's like a Frankenstein's monster of all of his pet interests: agricultural science, prison reform, evolution, seal hunting, prehistoric man, the supernatural, sailing, Korea, manifest destiny, and so on. It's like a patchwork quilt of clippings from his entire career. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who's new to London, because to the uninitiated reader it might all just seem like a big incoherent mess. Like many of London's works, there's also an unfortunate undercurrent of racism. Standing only seems to be able to channel Aryan males, and many of the stories share the theme of the blonde-haired, blue-eyed race conquering the globe. Thankfully it's more subtle and less offensive than some of London's more overt statements on race. For most of the book, London speaks of humanity in universal terms, and The Star Rover reads like a celebration of the resilience of the human spirit. At times it can be quite inspirational, at times depressingly brutal, and at other times just plain bizarre.

By Michael Al Niente is a story of three generations of family who find they best express themselves through art -- be it writing or music. It is a story of a grandmother who gave her grandson the gift of music and the love of teaching. By 82 the grandmother has dementia, she can no longer understand the language of music. The lesson she has left to teach is our time on Earth is short. Enjoy the music while you are able.

My daughter does not speak very well (I often chalk it up to her being raised listening to two languages since birth and she's still a baby) but the gift of music is one that I've always admired, and I can only hope for something similar for her.

The Healer By Bomojaz Eric Holden is a physician who has decided to live deep in the woods away from civilization, administering to lumberjacks and the like. One day he saves the life of a vacationing wealthy woman by means of a daring brain operation (in a rustic retreat in the woods!); they fall in love during her long convalescence, and marry. At first everything is great, but gradually Nell misses her old ways. She tries to get Eric to move to the city, but he refuses. She then tries, more successfully, to bring the city (or at least potential patients with money) to them: she helps get a hospital built and a railroad into the area. Still, when she has children, she spends more and more time away with them in the city. The marriage falters; they separate. Eric represents for Herrick an ideal individual: the doctor who wants to truly serve the needy and cares nothing for material wealth. But if Nell is supposed to be the villain with her opposite views, he draws her with very sympathetic lines. She is very patient at first, living in isolation quite a long while with little complaint. And why wouldn't a mother want the advantages of city life for her children over living in an isolated cabin? Holden often comes across as a bully and is unable to explain to Nell the great appeal he feels for the type of life he wants to live. You have to wonder why they married in the first place. Much of the dialogue and action are stiff - even some of the most intimate scenes between Eric and Nell as their young love is blossoming is stodgy. Herrick seems more interested in an idea, an ideal, here, and fails to develop it in the context of a novel. Not one of his better works.

It will buzz you up to the ceiling and keep you up there - you will NOT get back to sleep! John's story is frenetic, well-written and above all, honest. He is self-deprecating but also knows how good he was as the sub Goal Keeper. I can't imagine what it must have felt like to have been a sub all that time and never to have gotten a game on! (and this for a man who admits to loving the limelight!)His personality shines through so that this book is not only an inside-the-locker room expose of the Dub's rituals and warm-ups and practices - it's also a mad careening journey into the mind of a man crazied by a pedophile priest in his boyhood and who's been chasing demons since then. The man's heart shines through in this book on football and I'm a person who HATES football of any description, having married a bloke who watched it every night for the 8 years of our "bliss" together.John managed to keep me rivetted throughout although I got lost on some of the footy jargon. So don't let the apparent content put you off. It really is a read about a guy who went from god-awful benders of self-oblivion to the sober paddy he is today. That journey is not unusual - what's unusual is that a man could be so honest about it. More men should be so honest.It's a great read - it'll get your pulse racing (if you're a football fan) and it will creep rapidly around your heart like vines so that you praise the gods when he finally meets his wife Serena and sobers up. 49 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Compelling and intense By PT Cruiser I was drawn into this novel to the point where I could barely put it down after reading the first five pages. Bryan Reardon takes the reader inside the brain of Simon Connolly, a stay-at-home dad, father to Jake and his younger sister, Laney, and husband of Rachel, a successful lawyer. It's written in the first person. Simon's words make him a believable character who struggles with worrying too much about his children and worrying that he's doing what is best for them. As the story goes on, his intense love for his family becomes very evident. The shooting at the school happens several pages in and the following chapters go back and forth between the aftermath of the shooting and Jake at various stages of his life, beginning before his birth. That's all I'm going to say about the events that unfold because I don't want to give away any part of this well written story.School shootings that we read about in the news are horrifying. Reardon does an amazing job of bringing the reader into the lives of this family and the absolutely devastating effect it has on them. The story is as much about Simon as it is about Jake. There were times while reading that I felt almost like I couldn't breathe because of the raw intensity of emotions. I was moved to tears at times. He tells about what we don't see on the news or read in the papers. I may have chosen this book out of some type of morbid curiosity about these situations, but that quickly turned to empathy for the characters. And although this is a novel, it reads very much like a true account. There is no flowery literary prose here. Simon Connolly's character speaks like a real guy with a few rough edges and a lot of raw honest emotion. This is a story I won't forget.

Bristol Part-time freelance writer Simon has been a stay-at-home-husband since the birth of his two kids, while his wife, Rachel, works outside the home as a lawyer. Somewhat conflicted about the reversal of traditional gender roles but well-meaning, he navigates the waters of parenting, such as playdates and coaching little league. While his daughter, Laney, appears to effortlessly make friends, his older son, Jake, is shyer and appears more selective when it comes to bonding with others his age. Since Simon is introverted himself, he fluctuates between wanting to urge his son to be more social and letting him make his own friends. When Jake befriends a boy his age who seems "different," Simon again is torn (he has always encouraged his son to be empathetic but doesn't like the child at all in question). When the book opens, his children are now teenagers, and SImon has just received a text from their high school instructing them to go to a nearby church and wait, as there has been a school shooting. As the children are reunited with their parents and news comes in, it appears that both Jake and his friend were somehow involved. As the public and the media rush to condemn Simon and Rachel for their role in the shooting, Simon must find a way to find his missing son and hold onto his belief in his son's innocence - even as evidence mounts to suggest otherwise."Finding Jake" raises questions all parents confront at some point. How much control should a parent exert over his/her children's social life? What do you do if your child's friend gets him to do things that are downright dangerous? What happens if a bit of advice inadvertently winds up having horrible consequences? Though this book features a school shooting, it is not mainly about bullying. I won't spoil the end, but I'll just say that it did not go down the path I thought it would. As a reader, I found myself judging (and misjudging) the characters, based on incomplete information, just as those outside the family did in the story. Though I felt that the way Simon and Rachel handled the aftermath of the event wasn't delved into enough (including how it affected their daughter), this was a thought-provoking and heartfelt read.

Finding Jake By Kindred How odd to review a book about a school shooting on the day one occurred in my state though it wasn’t nearly as tragic as the one depicted in Finding Jake. In this tale we get the when and how with a modicum of why even if there could never be justification. The question here was who was involved and was Jake one of the shooters. All the evidence points to yes. Can his family live with the truth? Will they find Jake or will the police?The Connolly family was almost like any upper middle class family with two teenage kids. The only somewhat unusual factor was the stay at home dad. And frankly, what a neurotic insecure dad he is, although maybe the author’s intention was to show how drastically a crisis like a shooting unmoors even the strongest parent. He questions his every move and wonders how much his seeming lack of social skills and insecurities affect his kids. Luckily his daughter seems to take after her gregarious mother while Jake may be too much like his father, shy and unable to connect easily. Jake does make one particular friend that unnerves his father who does everything he can to dissuade his son from being too tied up with the boy. So why does this friend become involved with the tragedy, and how did Jake become involved?I guess pages of soul searching is to be expected with a story like this but it began to grate after a while. The writing is serviceable and the author does a good job of switching between the present and the past chapter to chapter tying it together. But the parents seem unrealistically involved in their children’s lives and yet unreachable in some unidentifiable way. And dad is so insecure and questions his every move to the point that I wanted to shake him occasionally. I also found parts of the narrative and reactions to events to be unrealistic. But then again, what is a normal reaction to such an abnormal event? Try to overlook the plot holes and maybe you’ll come away feeling much better about your own normal and mundane family. Because no one wants their family to be tested like this.
