When 20-year-old Australian Doujon Zammit was bashed by bouncers on a Greek island in July 2008, his tragic story made headlines in both Australia and Greece. Doujon had sustained terrible head injuries and would not recover. His grief-stricken parents, Oliver and Rosemarie, honoured Doujon's previous wish to be an organ donor, and Oliver became famous overnight in Australia and in Greece when he announced that Doujon's organs would be donated to Greek recipients. The day Doujon received his fatal injuries was also the day 31-year-old Greek-Australian journalist Kosta Gribilas was given a death sentence in a hospital in Athens. Critically ill with virus-induced heart failure, he was told he had only two weeks to live. Without an urgent transplant, Kosta knew he would soon die. He'd followed Doujon's story on TV, and even as he watched Oliver's emotional announcement, Kosta hadn't thought he might be saved - the doctors didn't want to give him false hope. On 2 August, after an emotional farewell to partner Poppy and his family and friends, Kosta drifted asleep for what he thought was going to be the last time. A day later he woke up with Doujon's heart beating in his chest and the life he'd longed for now ahead of him.Because of the public nature of Doujon's fatal attack, Kosta met Rosemarie and Oliver when they visited Athens. It was to be the beginning of an extraordinary, heartwarming friendship that would sustain both families through the dark days to come - a roller-coaster course of events neither family could have possibly predicted. Through all this, Kosta is constantly reminded of Doujon's remarkable gift: 'How can I ever forget Doujon, when every heartbeat reminds me how blessed I am?'A beautiful, inspiring story about two families united by tragedy and how a selfless and courageous gift of love keeps on giving to this day.

Pictures in Verse is a collection of poems inspired by impressions from many places, and many times. They represent travels around the world, and moments of the mind. Words are the quantum elements of our thinking. Impressions are the chemistry that defines who we are. So pictures can be painted with words creating links to the finite conditions that we find in our lives; but also the voices of eternity that speak from within, and the places of infinity that beckon us to travel them.

Each person takes away his or her own special definitions, meaning and understanding of what the poet is trying to convey. Messages are definitely transmitted through each stanza whether the poems rhyme or are blank verse. The poems within this collection send out different messages whether the author takes on a journey to different places, events or defines a specific word. Pictures in Verse is unique in that author Frances Redmond provides several illustrations at the end of the book which help readers better understand several of the poems and see if you the reader pictured the event, incident or place in your own mind. As you read each poem close your eyes and visualize and form mental image of what the author is saying. To Be Precise: defined as being marked by exactness and accuracy of expression or detail according to the dictionary. The poem asks many questions such as: Can honesty live behind closed doors? Are good and evil forever entwined? Is eternity reality far away? Wouldn’t it be nice if the answers were Precise! Think about it.Legal Tender talks about the value of a dollar and how far it can go. As you read this poem you will understand just what a dollar can be used for, how it can be spent and if you are not sure after reading the poem check out the illustration at the end of the book that will help clarify it even further. The value of dollar changes of fluctuates as the poet states. But, what would we do without it? As he states the dollar cannot choose its owner or who is serves. Tips for a paperboy, change made, a purchase at Liquor Store and without that precious one-dollar bill how would you buy some gum, candy or even at one time two tickets to the RKO. A saying that sets the stage precedes each poem or picture for what the author relates in his poem. Fountain of Youth is one of my favorites ad the author talks about star travelers, there laughing darting eyes flashing over and back on cosmic tides, I quote. You are never too old to appreciate the “ riches of children’s gold.Vanity is defined as: excessive pride in or admiration of one’s own appearance or achievements. We are all vain in some respects. Some are considered genius. Others might have a magnetic pull to some awhile some you might withdraw from. A person can closed off and journey within himself/herself and guarded at times to keep themselves within their own realm of thought and feelings.Individuality being that you are and not following the traits of others. I love that he states that goals are sometimes not met and that man the struggle is the art but not to compromise before you start. “The goals you set many save its light.” Stand by your convictions and follow your own path. Poems about places, live, inspiration, realities, the world and even love fill the pages of this rare collection. The author defines words in his own way such as Gratitude and follows with a poem that hits home about losing someone you love.Losing a loved one is difficult and expressing your feelings not always easy as the author pens When We Lose Someone We Love. The poem relates how we feel that we are younger, when things happen in life that we cannot control that make us sad, but the last stanza says it all and I will leave that to you the reader. Over the Graves continues this theme as the author relates whether it is him or someone else walking through a cemetery and looking at the stones, thinking about those that are there and the many reasons why we have a hard time saying goodbye. They say a picture speaks a thousand words as you go to the end of the book and look at the illustration that the author shares about the poem Rendezvous and see if you can picture the beach, the warm water, the sand and the boy staring out into space on a chair with an umbrella over him thinking about the past and the people gone by. Thinking of friends that he knew, times that he enjoyed and names he cannot even remember. It is revisiting his life through his memories. Next take a look at the picture the author shares for the poem C’est L’Amour and picture the two figures in black as if they are traveling time and space as one looks at the other while the other looks in a different direction each one with their own thoughts and each one drifting through their special fantasies. As the author titles the picture: L’Amour. The poems are unique unto themselves and there are other pictures that he shares within this collection. I really enjoyed reading As We Gaze Out to the Stars, which focuses on how we are people find out about our many selves or personalities. What would happen is we had to go beyond the Earth to live? What would happen if there were other galaxies that we could explore? What would happen if things changed? Could be do it or not? A great poem to get everyone thinking about the future, the past and how we can all work together to live anywhere in peace and in harmony. Great poem, great collection and interesting subjects to keep the reader guessing, interested and wondering where the author will explore next.

I was mesmerized by the images the verses invoked and at times it felt like the words were written just for me By Susan Elliston Take your time reading the words between these pages, for truly they are words of wisdom. I was mesmerized by the images the verses invoked and at times it felt like the words were written just for me. This author should have been published years ago, and I can only hope he will find the time to write again. I have read this book cover to cover twice now, and I know in the years ahead I will read it again and again. It has become a treasured entry into my library. I congratulate Francis on accomplishing his goal, and I encourage anyone who is searching for a book of verse, not to hesitate. With great pleasure, I give this work five stars.

I received my copy in the mail yesterday and was unable to put it down until read in its entirety. Complete with whimsical pixel drawings to accompany some of the elegant and intelligent writings, this collection of works is subtly brilliant, surprisingly humble, and pleasingly charming.

Tales, by Edgar Allan Poe

From the Publisher Tales, by Edgar Allan Poe, is a collection of twenty-five stories from the literary father of the mysterious and the macabre. These individual pieces, which include "The Fall of the House of Usher," and "Silence: A Fable," together make up the body of both Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque, and Tales of the Folio Club. Taken as a whole, Poe’s writing has cast its dark and exquisite shadow over many genres of literature, from the mysteries of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to the science fiction of Jules Verne, but in this collection the author’s ability to explore the darker corners of the readers’ psyche comes to the fore. Such is the power of his story-telling that his tales retain their eerie power to delight and terrify in equal measure more than a century and a half after his death.

About the Author Author, poet, and literary critic, Edgar Allan Poe is credited with pioneering the short story genre, inventing detective fiction, and contributing to the development of science fiction. However, Poe is best known for his works of the macabre, including such infamous titles as The Raven, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, Lenore, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Part of the American Romantic Movement, Poe was one of the first writers to make his living exclusively through his writing, working for literary journals and becoming known as a literary critic. His works have been widely adapted in film. Edgar Allan Poe died of a mysterious illness in 1849 at the age of 40.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. What of the competing editions? By Ben Hodges I have an inexplicable attraction to the Modern Library hardbacks. Inevitably, if a Modern Library hardback version of some book that I want exists, I'll end up buying it. I really don't know why. Anyway, case and point: Edgar Allan Poe.The benefits of this edition are evident:a) All the short stories--yes, even the uproariously funny ones that most paperbacks leave out, as well as Poe's bizarre "hoaxes" and inexplicably contrived "articles" that don't really pass very well as storiesb) All the poems--including poetry written in childhood as well as posthumously discoveredc) ...and a couple of essays--most importantly, "The Rationale of Verse."However, the book still lacks most of Poe's criticism and other essays. I suggest you purchase Dover's little paperback _Edgar Allan Poe: Literary Theory and Criticism_ (kind of a "Greatest Hits" collection of Poe's critical work which, in reality, spans over 1500 pages) to complete your library. There you will find the great classic "The Philosophy of Composition" accompanied by dozens of ingenius (and at times ascerbic) reviews of books you may know from elsewhere. It's an invaluable resource. Moreover, the same Modern Library problems afflict this edition--thus, herein lies another reason I cannot explain why I must keep on buying and reading Modern Library hardbacks:A) There is no textual or intertextual editing, nor are there any critical footnotes. Moreover, there is no critical introduction by a Poe scholar. This bytes.B) There is no margin room. There never is in a Modern Library hardback. This gets really annoying when you're reading "The Fall of the House of Usher," and you're trying to tie together pieces of evidence (all part of Poe's perfect conceived "totality" of content) to form a of cohesive, critical interpretation of the story with about a centimeter of margin room in which to write! Your handwriting will quickly show itself illegible, and your hand mercilessly cramped.C) Modern Library hardbacks are customarily printed on cheap (although smooth and aesthetically pleasing) paper. Thus, when you write in your book, the ink is very likely to bleed over onto the converse page. Also quite annoying. However, however, however--I must not forget that the goal of Modern Library is not to print the best book possible, but the best _affordable_ book possible. And at $18.00, this 1000 page hardback is hard to beat. So, if you have the money, do actually buy _the best_ edition: the Library of America edition. ISBN 0940450186. It's over 1400 pages, is printed on paper that will last forever, and is edited by a prominent Poe scholar--but it's almost $40.00!But, more importantly for those of us on budgets: This edition is in direct competition with both the DoubleDay and Castle editions of Poe's collected stories and poems. Under no circumstances would I recommend the other two editions due to their typesettings. I know that may sound ridiculous, but a humane typesetting has a lot to do with the pleasure and utility that a book can and will proffer its reader. The print on the other two editions is inordinately overloaded (too much packed on each page) and serves to burden the eyes. For sooth, the Modern Library version is packed too--but it's a huge improvement on the other two editions. If you've got $40, get the Library of America edition. If you've only got $20, get this one.

Poe is an underappreciated genius By A Customer Poe has been overlooked by today's literary order, but the man was one of the finest American authors ever. His stories paved the way for other great and popular authors--everyone from Conan Doyle to Stephan King. This book is an outstanding collection and should be read not for its literary value (which is tremendous) but for the sheer fun of it.

29 of 31 people found the following review helpful. INSPIRATIONAL CLASSIC By Peter Uys Trine was one of those old metaphysicians, like also Thomas Troward, Ella Wheeler Wilcox and Ernest Holmes, whose nobility of thought and elegant way with words are not easily rivaled by modern writers in the field. Like the others, he writes in the Christian Gnostic tradition and illumines the scriptures in a way that has relevance and practical application for seekers after truth. Only as Being projects itself into existence are we able to know it. We may know the fact that Being "is," but only as it manifests itself in form are we able to know it itself. And it is only through thought that we are able to conceive of Divine Being as the infinite spirit and essence of life and then to realise that it is the life of our life - in this way we can allow it to become incarnate in us. Rightly directed thought has redeeming power, so it is through our thought that we can create for ourselves a new heaven and a new earth. Trine explains why it is better to avoid perplexing theological theories and dogmas that merely give a vague promise of some afterlife instead of the means of actualising the divine life here and now. The one great truth of being is that there's no real life except God and to the extent that we realise the indwelling presence, we become awakened beings. But it is not the mere intellectual recognition, but the conscious vital and living realisation of this truth that makes it of value and renders it manifest in our everyday lives. This great classic is of the same quality as Trine's "In Tune with the Infinite" and I highly recommend it.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Understated Title By M. D. Baker This little book(Five chapters)reveals the most important message Jesus tried to get his contemporaries to understand and like Trine's other writings, he practically installs it to your hard drive.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Timeless Truths By Amazon Customer I truly enjoyed this book. It is amazing how many, if not most, of the books written today are precisely what THIS one teaches and this one is over 100 years old. I would highly recommend it to anyone who may be seeking answers to MANY of "life's " issues. Brilliant book and an easy read.

Laura Fabrycky presents a collection of poems that invite the reader to wait and worship in the anticipation of Advent, to see the world afresh through a child's eyes, to grieve alongside friends stung by a loved one's death, and to feel the nearness of humor and tragedy abroad. Written over fifteen years from various locations in America and the Middle East, and in witness to several seasons of life, these are poems that ring with the making of daily life and embody the quotidian joys and heartaches that are true for all people, everywhere. This beautiful volume makes a superb gift for the Advent and Christmas seasons, as well as for those who value the place of poetry in everyday life.

From the Back Cover "Laura's poems are an invitation to wonder--to lean forward in speculation, stand back in awe. They are an invitation to re-imagine the first Advent. Like the lines of a quick pencil-sketch, like thick bold layers of oil paint, they both strip away and fill in, challenging us to behold afresh the Incarnation in its simplicity and infinite complexity, its meanness and beauty, its ordinary humanness and its ineffable divinity." - from the foreword by Heather Ferngren Morton

About the Author Laura Merzig Fabrycky is a writer, editor, and poet. She is a graduate of Wheaton College (IL) and Virginia Theological Seminary. Laura currently lives in Virginia with her husband and their three children. Give Me the Word is her first collection of poetry.

While I have been one of those graced by Laura’s advent poems since she wrote her first one in 2000, I am grateful that she has gathered them as well as others into a book that I want near. Laura has a gift for capturing life’s moments and giving them a voice. As someone who connected very rarely with poetry, Laura enriches me by opening my mind and heart to a way of seeing and experiencing my own life. I heartily recommend her book.

Normally, I'm not a read-the-foreword kind of person, but this time, even that drew me in. The words used to describe Laura's poetry are captivating. That response is more than justified. My eyes brimmed with tears upon reading the first poem in the collection. Warm tears spilled down my cheeks at the second. There is such beauty and breath to her writing. I am better for the experience.

The artwork on each page made each poem stand out significantly and the glossy cover of the book looked so much better in my hands. But the poems.... what can I say? All of them were really from the author's heart and each one brought tears to my eyes. The author's bio left you wondering how one woman could go through so much heartache and pain and still be able to write such beautiful poems. I truly hope to read more of this author's work in the future. If you've been down a hard road.. this book will certainly lift your spirit. Anything that can erupt such true emotions is well worth the read!

The words are from deep in the heart the feelings that come from loss but also words to try and help comfort the pain as life is By Jean Estry This is a book of poems written from life experiences with grief, death, God and angels. The words are from deep in the heart the feelings that come from loss but also words to try and help comfort the pain as life is not easy.

This book illustrates with perfect clarity a life well lived but fraught with heartache By Amazon Customer This book illustrates with perfect clarity a life well lived but fraught with heartache. Though the journey through may be emotionally scalding and raw, the poems contained here are of the bravest sort; that which holds nothing if not the utmost hope for the future and enduring faith in the love and guidance of something greater. These words are necessary to bring light to the darkest paths of our own ruminations, our own losses and serves as a guidepost for the way out. These kinds of stories are essential in today's world, and speak to the best parts of our own human nature... an excellent read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A book that makes us realize the worth of every breath By Saradia Chatterjee Erin’s life changes dramatically with one phone call. From being a healthy woman, a happy wife and a proud mom, she finds herself in a position where being “terminally ill” determines much of everything for her. Every breath is a gift is a collection of her journal entries during the roughest patch of her life. It is a memoir which speaks of her courage, fortitude and her faith in the amazing power of hope. The worth of books such as this one cannot be judged by ratings. So, the rating is just for obligatory purposes. This is the first time I’ve read a memoir of this kind and I was moved beyond words. We read a great deal about cancer in works of fiction and watch movies where the ailment is brought under focus. However, we can never understand the tremendous hardships of this malady unless we come across real life accounts. Erin’s journal entries show us glimpses of the emotions she felt and the struggles she went through right from the moment of her diagnosis with leukemia. She has braved many challenges and overcome great odds to reach this point in her life when she is able to reflect on the crisis that redefined everything. She makes us realize how important it is to never give up on hope. As she mentions frequently in her memoir, we often take many things for granted. To some people, little things mean the world—the very things whose worth we never understand. Erin’s memoir is one of those books that make us conscious about the gifts we have in life, the greatest of them all—the ability to breathe. Yes, indeed, every breath is a gift. Erin’s battle with cancer shows the harsh realities and the will to look beyond it. This book can provide hope to people who fight new battles everyday and go through the turmoil of a grueling illness. It is also a reminder of the value of human bonding which acts as a catalyst in the healing process.

This book traces the Galloways back almost four centuries, starting with their Scottish homelands and their arrival in Virginia in the 1620's. They moved to Maryland in 1649 as part of a Quaker settlement, and from there spread out, following the frontier to Pennsylvania and Kentucky. The author's ancestry is traced back to Thomas, who died in Baltimore in 1798. The story is well documented throughout, with events put into historical context.

This book include lots of unfounded assumptions that the author takes for fact. While I appreciate the challenge of this research, I didn't find it helpful in proving or disproving any of my own research questions. I will review her bibliography for further research however.

“This collection of insightful, emotionally intuitive short stories by Grace succeeds in honoring the resilience of women around the world. The female characters presented in these seven fictional stories hail from a broad range of backgrounds, yet they are united in their struggle against adversity. Their intensely private ordeals explore numerous scenarios, from a young woman’s battle against a degenerative disease to a mother’s attempt to reconnect with her daughter, who has returned from college. From deft character sketches, engaging and psychologically detailed narratives evolve. “A Sharp Mind” charts the physical deterioration of a woman with multiple sclerosis and the reactions of her family. This story in particular emphasizes the individual strength and determination of the remarkable characters … Powerful and life-affirming, the narrative always captures the spirit of survival. “The Presence” is a story about a young girl being sent away to boarding school. Waving goodbye to her sisters, Sydney is bundled into the family’s Aston Martin. The ensuing journey maps the boundaries of trust between a mother and daughter. “The India Affair,” a story about a woman’s journey to Mumbai with a group of doctors, examines an outsider’s understanding of another culture, along with its inequalities and injustices. The author’s descriptive skills peak here, as she offers an evocative street-level view of the city: … “Leya’s Serengeti,” the story of a mother taking care of a dog her daughter purchased on a whim, further demonstrates the author’s stylistic versatility, as elegant prose is replaced with a more urgent stream-of-consciousness approach to reflect the psychology of emotional pressure. In its entirety, the collection is a delicate and thoughtful exploration of strength in suffering. Affecting yet inspiring in its positivity.” —Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review). ... featured as one of Kirkus' Indie Books of the Month for December!" —Kirkus Reviews

The recipes are old (1905) and some of the terms are different. When telling you how much butter to use, she says "butter the size of an egg." She says use a "saltspoon" of salt. She calls a recipe a "rule." There are lots of good sounding recipes and I am definitely going to try many of them. In fact, I have one going on the stove right now. I would recommend this to you because you can present with a new twist many commonly known dishes. It's a fun book. This book is written like a little girl is writing it. I got my book at no cost when I had it sent to my Kindle ereader.

It doesn't make sense at first. After reading a few pages, without the table of contents, you begin to notice a distinct pattern. Some of the recipes are a bit strange, but doable.

When a gentle demon flees his life of slavery for the rough streets of 1980s Los Angeles, a thrift store guitar becomes his refuge, enabling him to weave together music and magic into rich audiovisual tapestries. Cain Pseudomantis quickly finds himself embraced by the city’s rock scene and swept into a new life, along with three magically gifted human band mates. But fame does not heal Cain’s woes. Hounded by an overzealous televangelist and unable to completely shake off the trauma of his past, he finds himself alienated and treated as an object of fear even as his fan base grows. Meanwhile a mysterious serial killer quietly racks up victims throughout the city under cover of the commotion generated by Cain’s presence. The ritualistic nature of the murders casts increasing suspicion on the city’s only resident demon. When Cain and his band mates make a rash attempt to uncover the killer’s identity in order to clear Cain’s name, they discover that the mystery goes much deeper than they thought. Cain must now unravel the web of lies and intrigue he has unwittingly uncovered, or risk losing everything he has gained.

I'm hoping there will be a second book. From the time I started reading I was intrigued with what would happen in the main conflict of the story. I just couldn't put the book down although I had to a few times. Quite a long book, but good. There are quite a few supernatural events to keep the reader reading and wanting more. The characters and the secondary themes were the most intriguing of the book.Ms. Orosz wrote the characters so that you could visualize and hear them speaking. The author didn't give a clean cut between evil and good. Ms. Orosz raising the question of morality within an individuals own beliefs.I do wish the author had given a few more details about the characters previous lives.. What we hear of is their lives now. I feel any time a reader is left wanting more, then that is a good book. I'm hoping there will be a book two. The author gave some really good major themes in the book.1. The idea that not being "normal" is okay.None of us are normal, whatever normal may be.2.Turning creature tropes on their heads.3. The misguided nature of the "Satanic Panic" in the 1980's. To some this was quite a scare and to others it was a possible different approach to "religion".4. Feeling that good and evil aren't always so black and white. Nothing is black and white, there is a gray section in everything. Everyone has good and evil i n them, only to different extents.5. Showing strength in different ways. Strength is not always physical. Strength can be mental and emotional.6. Finding friendship in unexpected places. There are people in all walks of life, in every nook and cranny of the streets that are looking desperately for a friend. You just have to look and then make sure you take time to find out about them before you become too friendly.Life is not just good and evil. There is good, there is evil and there is a combination of the two.I was given a complimentary copy of DEVIL MUSIC from the author, Carly Orosz and Smith Publicity for my view of the book. No other compensation took place.

From the beginning of first chapter, I wanted to find out what would happen in the main conflict, and I ended up reading it in one afternoon/night/early morning (not always the case with me these days... I love a book that makes me keep reading until 2am!). The plot takes several twists, and there are enough supernatural events to keep fantasy readers happy. The strongest elements of the book for me, though, were the characterization and the bigger themes underlying the story. I came away feeling that I could see and hear several characters, particularly some of the supporting ones (favorite was Patron of Los Angeles). The book does not give a clear-cut definition of good and evil, but rather raises questions of morality within belief systems and on both sides of conflict. It seems to explore the definition and experience of servitude in a context which echoes current events, though it was done through a supernatural character. The only downside was that I was left wanting more details about the main character's backstory. I am glad that I was left wanting more rather than less, and I hope that will be in a 2nd book.I like books that provide a mental escape while exploring questions relevant to human relationships and ethics, and I like to be reminded of a book after I finish reading. This one did all of that. The book reminded me a little of some of Anne Rice's books, but this one all takes place in the present day (well, 1980's... another similarity to the Lestat book). I would read more books by this author.

Sympathy for the Devil By James I received a review copy of this book from Novel Publicity.Put on your favourite heavy metal album, pour yourself a drink and relax into the story of an unlikely hero. Remember when hair bands became a thing, and parents across the country cried out against the evils of ‘devil music’? It’s the early 1980’s and Cain Pseudomantis has just erupted into the LA club scene as lead guitarist of Pseüdomäntis. The kicker? Unlike most of the other rockers, Cain is an actual, real-live devil.Cain has only a few scattered memories of his life before he was enslaved by the sorcerer Mr. Warwick. For ten years he’s been little more than a servant and pet to the sorcerer and his sons, Lance and Steve. Heavy metal music was his escape from the &&&&ty treatment he endured. So when he was sent by his master to Los Angeles on a mission, Cain ends up buying an electric guitar and through no fault of his own, getting signed to Daggerspoint Records. However, not all is well in the City of Angels. A serial killer dubbed ‘The Engineer’ has been targeting young male rockers, torturing them in strange, ritualistic ways before dumping their bodies. The police don’t seem to care, and the frothing televangelist Nathaniel Breen is all too happy to see these ‘satan worshippers’ cut down. When the mystery cuts too close to home, it’s up to Cain and his band mates to find the Engineer before he takes another victim.I greatly enjoyed following Cain’s exploits. Having been sheltered for the past ten years, he has trouble with things like reading and telephones. And unlike what Breen and his ilk would have you believe, he is not evil. Through half-remembered glimpses into his past, we learn that devils are in fact the offspring of fallen angels and humans living in some kind of subterranean alternate world. They lead a paleolithic existence and care nothing for harvesting human souls or anything of the like. Cain is actually a gentle soul, who finds himself deeply troubled by the evils humanity can inflict on each other. The world of ‘Devil Music’ is just a tad off-centre. Sorcerers, gods, and monsters share the city with mortals who would rather look the other way than think too much into it. As more people learn of Cain’s secret, they simply seem to accept that he’s an actual devil and his band mates can do real magic. Steve Warwick gets in trouble in school for cursing his classmates and Mr. Warwick makes a living as a sort of magical mercenary. So while these things happen on the fringes of mainstream society, they are seen as an oddity rather than an impossibility.‘Devil Music’ is a well-crafted mystery with good world-building and interesting characters. There seems to be more in the works from this author and I look forward to it!

It takes a bit of getting used to his style. Once comfortable reading him, the depth is amazing. This is not an exhaustive commentary. It is a "stroll" through Genesis. These are his "notes". Don't read it for other than this.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not bad. By jfield1 A simple guide and analysis of the Biblical book of Genesis. I received my money's worth and expected little else.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Notes to help follow the sequenced book yet not what was expected. By Arthur Dunfee The stories told and noted were not of biblical guidance. Notes to explain Genesis was not provided. Would not recommend this material to anyone. Not even a historian of the Bible.

Gou ni itte wa, gou ni shitagae, runs an old Japanese proverb: Obey the customs of the village you enter.   Just don’t overdo things.   It may already be too late for Cricket Collins, a recent Ivy League graduate who travels to Osaka for his first real job as an English instructor. The time is late 1970s, with Japan quickly becoming the new find-yourself region that India was to the backpack set in the 1960s. From pachinko parlors to paper cranes, tea ceremonies to translation problems, everything is entrancing to Cricket, at first, as he throws himself headfirst into a two-thousand-year-old culture.   But soon he gets fired from his teaching job at Kansai Gakuin for petty theft, and on a brief trip to Korea he becomes embroiled in a sexual misadventure with painful after-effects. Spinning slowly out of orbit in his free-floating expatriate existence, he starts to lose touch with family, friends, and reality. It isn’t until he returns home to America that he begins to turn Japanese with a vengeance.  Turning Japanese is as much about the allure of a foreign culture as it is about the divided existence of an expat and the terrors of ones own mind. Be careful of breaking down the barriers between two cultures: the breakdown you create may be your own.

Turning Japanese, by David Galef

From Publishers Weekly Though its general appeal is limited, Galef's second novel (after Flesh) is bound to strike a chord with the 20-somethings who, like protagonist Cricket Collins, have postponed (or have contemplated postponing) post-college life with a teaching job in another country. Cornell grad Cricket has put off law school for a year and signed on as an English instructor in Japan, but he quickly finds that life for a gaijin is more complicated than the one he has left behind. Cricket's minor misadventures?dealing with an officious cleaning lady, teaching enthusiastic but only slightly comprehending students, romancing Reiko, his Japanese girlfriend, during a lugubrious visit with her parents, even trying a Korean prostitute?fail to add up to much of a narrative. If the reader doesn't get much of an insight into Japanese culture, it's because we're stuck in the orbit of Cricket, a young man who interests himself more than he interests us. When Cricket cracks up while leading a class of businessmen in conversational English, the book spins (with its protagonist) out of control toward an unearned "tragic" ending back in the U.S., with its sad young hero still trying retrospectively to break out of his expat isolation. (Sept.) FYI: Galef, who has lived in Japan, is the author of "Even Monkeys Fall from Trees" and Other Japanese Proverbs.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal In his second novel (after Flesh, LJ 3/15/95), Galef brilliantly captures expatriate life in Japan. Cricket Collins, just graduated cum laude from Cornell in the flush late 1970s, decides to leave the United States for nine months before entering law school. Is he trying to escape his past or to create a different future from what he and his father have envisioned? Whatever his aim, he succeeds only in the latter, as his months in Japan extend into years and the pastAin the form of his dead mother; his only girlfriend, who left him; and even the jaded expat he met fleetingly on the flight overAhaunts his daily bike rides. This novel will prove inviting for anyone interested in the expat experience or in Japanese culture, but as a meditation on sanity, or on a life wasted, it falls short. Galef has captured the feeling of being betwixt and between two cultures, but Cricket never seems as crazy as he or anyone else thinks. In the last few chapters, the reader feels abandoned when the viewpoint shifts to that of Cricket's new roommate back in the States. Only Cricket and Japan have come alive in these pages, and that is not quite enough.ADoris Lynch, Monroe Cty. P.L., Bloomington, INCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Spending a year in Japan after graduating from Cornell in the late 1970s was Cricket Collins' plan. But the year stretched to almost five because it was all so seductive: the work (teaching conversational English) was plentiful and profitable; the controlled society (which allowed foreigners a certain latitude) was appealing; and he liked the food. Increasingly immersed in a culture so different from his own, Collins eventually fits in neither. The problem with viewing the expatriate experience through the lens of this protagonist is that Collins is less than stable to begin with. He grew up solitary, the only child of a mother who died when he was nine and a distant father, and in Japan he commits acts of petty theft, hears--and answers--voices in his head of persons living and dead, and finally shouts insults at his students. So it is no surprise that his story turns dark. Interesting from a cross-cultural standpoint but ultimately lacking uplift. Michele Leber

By hoflich@jade.dti.ne.jp A "just-about-as-accurate-as-it-gets" account of a young man who comes to Asia to fight off the post-graduation blues, discover himself, and get away from the baggage of home. Main character Cricket Collins comes over on a teaching internship, loses his job, finds a new one, gets over his culture shock and actually learns something about Japan. He picks up a nice girl, somehow remains faithful to her, then tries to sort out his life as he acclimatizes to his new world. I found this book quite accurate in its depictions of the "foreign ghetto" of English teachers in Japan, namely the nutty types that end up here as well as the types of situations that they get into. Some of Cricket's experience mirrored mine in an eerie way, none less than the fact that he ended up living in the same town that I do! The author's style is satisfying and reads well, and he renders the language of Japanese characters in the book quite comfortably for the most part - something that would be quite tricky for someone who hasn't lived for a long time in Japan to do. Trips to Korea, China, and New York highlight the book and keep it interesting. With the last chapter of the book, the author veers wildly in his intent and changes the course of the novel drastically by dealing with the Cricket's ideosyncracies quite directly - I am pretty sure I understand what he was trying to do and find it quite amazing, a rare effort in the field of literature and I admire his dedication to his vision although it may give other readers whiplash. A new second-to-last chapter set in America could have softened the blow, but I'm not really complaining. This book has probably only been read by five or six people, a real shame.

By A Customer Forget Bicycle Days, forget Ransom, this is the only novel that captures what it is *really* like to live as an expatriate in Japan. I've lived in Japan for over 8 years and believe me, this is the only one that gets it right. Galef has created the archetype for the disillusioned English teacher in Japan and his name is Cricket Collins. Don't read that horrible Dave Barry Does Japan book, read this. Highly entertaining and informative. Buy one for all your friends who are thinking about living in Japan.@
