It is themat so that is examines attitudes towards the Synagouge in one chapter and examines the attitude of Jews towards the Slave trade and other occupations in another area. It examines all facets of Jewish life from communal life to Rabbis, occupation, family life, marriage and clothing.A fascinating view into the life of Jews in Europe in the Middle Ages that shows the incredible diversity and depth of the Jewish community and shows how much we can learn about their culture and how they coped in a world that was often unsteady and insecure.Seth J. Frantzman

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An important survey of Jewish life By Deb Nam-Krane The most important thing to know about this book is that it was written at the end of the 19th century, before the Holocaust and before the spasm of hatred in the early 20th century that led to a mass exodus of Jews from Eastern Europe. Important, too, is where this book doesn't cover. There is almost no mention of Russia or the Baltic States, although Poland does come up several times. Also, as far as this book is concerned Scandinavia does not exist. Spain, France, Italy, England, Portugal, Germany, Palestine, Egypt and to some extent Morocco and Algiers are the regions of primary concern. The author takes pains at the beginning to point out that while the Medieval period may have been something of a Dark Ages for Christendom, the Jewish communities of Europe (or "Israel", as he refers to it) were shielded from much of that until the end of the period when they became increasingly isolated, culminating in being sent to live in ghettos in many areas, or simply exiled. However, Jews were frequently the subject of specific legislation which both limited what industries they could enter- money-lending in many areas was the only form of activity left open to them- and taxed them exorbitantly. At one point, the Jewish communities in England provided one-twelfth of the royal revenue. That communities could thrive despite that is remarkable. The topics covered here include religious life, social life, home life, marriage customs, love and courtship, games, clothing, trade, slavery and education, to name just a few. It discusses not only the laws governing a topic but the deviations by area as well as the ways in which restrictions were countered by different communities. The amount of knowledge the common Jewish man in Spain was responsible to master- everything from Religion and Philosophy to Optics and "Indian" mathematics- was staggering. The author makes the case that the Renaissance was ushered in by the Jews, to a great extent those who brought Arabic and Indian learning with them from Spain. He notes that Italy, where there were the fewest restrictions on Jews, was where the Renaissance initially flowered. I would agree. The book ends by exploring the relationships between Jews and Christians. That so many laws had to be issued so frequently to restrict social exchange between the two groups, the author argues, shows how deeply the communities were connected. The author cites many examples, famous and mundane, to show how often Jews and Christians worked and socialized together. The author appears to apologize in the introduction- and in places throughout the book- for the character of his contemporary co-religionist. These are the hardest parts of the book to read, in part because he never makes clear what, specifically, is wrong with the Jewish character, and in part because it smacks of the ingrained self-effacing seen in so many oppressed minority groups. But this, in and of itself, is instructive too.Recommended for any student of Jewish history.

If this subject is interesting to you, Israel Abrahams has left you a classic. It may be old, but it's still in print. That tells you something. I haven't been able to find anything better on the subject.

Kartman Although I love reading histories, I confess that the American Revolution never fully captured my interest and I am not very familiar with the fine modern literature on this subject. However, as a teen I came across a tattered but still readable copy of this in its 1876 first edition from Harper & Bros., a centennial tribute to its subject matter. I devoured it, spending much time staring at the fine pen and ink illustrations. As the title suggests, it is a descriptive chronology of the battles of the Revolution, and its slightly outmoded style somehow seems entirely fitting. It is full of evocative detail that brought the various campaigns to life for me. This, from the chapter on Saratoga: "And a grand supper General Burgoyne gave to his officers. The wife of one of the officers of the commisary department, who was no better than she should be, sat by his side at the table, and drank Champagne with him, and the officers clinked their glasses, and laughed and sung songs, while the poor wounded soldiers were lying half starved under the trees and fences, and the good Madame Reidesel was making them broth."No doubt there are fuller, more modern treatments of the subject. But for sheer pleasure I can still recommend Coffin's history without reservation.

A Sadly Terrible Reprint of a Wonderful Story By Sonya Shafer Unfortunately, the publisher (General Books) who has reprinted Charles Coffin's wonderful story has not taken the time to format or proofread this publication. The continuous margin-to-margin text is riddled with typos that are evidence of using a computer program to try to read and re-type the text. For example, the first full sentence I can find, after searching through lines of what might have been a contents but now appears as code, reads, "TT LIJAII FAVOR, lived in Ryefield, np among the New Hampshire- hills. On the morning of April 20th, 1775, as lie was milking the cows, he heard a clattering of hoofs, and, looking np, saw Deacon Clyde coming as fast as his old mare could brino; him, and that was not fast enough . . . "I'm returning this reprinted copy and asking for a full refund. It's unreadable.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This is an exciting classic By Israel Drazin Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) was one of the most remarkable public figure of Victorian England. He was an enormously successful prime minister and statesman, and one of the creators of the modern English Conservative party. He was the only Jew who served as an English prime minister. Being many-sided, he was also one of the most widely-read novelists of his day. His novel David Alroy is probably the first Jewish historical novel ever published.David Alroy was one of close to a half dozen false messiahs in Jewish history. He lived in the mid twelfth century in Kurdistan. His real name was Menachem ben Solomon, but he called himself David because he claimed to be a descendant of the biblical King David, and could therefore, by tradition, be the king of the Jews and the prayed-for messiah. The name Alroy appears to be a corruption of his family's Arabic name al-Duji.Available information of his activities is contradictory and tendentious. He seems to have taken advantage of the wars between Christians and Muslims in the wake of the First Crusade when there were numerous massacres and Jews longs for the messiah to save them. David was very handsome and charming, and was learned in Muslim culture, Jewish mysticism, and sorcery. He sent letters to many Jews declaring that he is the messiah who came to return his people to Israel. Rumors began to spread of his magical powers, including an ability to fly. However, before the start of his mission, he was murdered.Exactly what happened is no longer known. In one version, his father-in-law was bribed and killed him. In another, he was captured and about to be tortured when he warned the Caliph that he had magical powers. The Caliph demanded that he prove his claim. David responded, chop off my head and you will see me return alive. This legend has him using this ruse to escape torture. D'Israeli has another idea.D'Israeli's "wondrous tale," as he called it, is mostly fiction. D'Israeli describes David as a young man who was known as a descendant of King David and who was accepted as being the king of the Jews before he proclaimed himself the messiah. We read how he kills the brother of the Sultan who was trying to rape his sister and his adventures during his flight to save himself from the Sultan's wrath. We are introduced to David's teacher, a very religious mystical Jew, who David idolizes during the early parts of the novel when he did what his teacher advised. We are also introduced to his teacher's brother, a hugely rich "practical man" who abandoned Judaism, lives as a Muslim, and is the advisor of the Caliph and the Caliph's daughter.David falls in love with the Caliph's beautiful Muslim daughter who hates living among the wealth and stringencies of her father's kingdom and is willing to do almost anything to escape. Unlike the true David, Disraeli's fictional hero is able to raise huge armies and is successful in many battles against Sultans until he violates Jewish law and his teacher's advice and marries the Caliph's daughter. Many people dislike reading books written in earlier centuries because they feel that they are ponderous. This fear is unwarranted for many of classics composed when D'Israeli wrote this book, such as those by Dickens. However, it is true of Alroy. Nevertheless, with a little patience readers will enjoy the suspense that D'Israeli inserts into this fast-moving adventure.

To enter Julie Hensley's Viable is not to step but to plunge. . . With Hensley's guide, we travel through deftly rendered landscapes of the Great Plains and the rural South. We study the language of horses and historical figures. We probe marriage, miscarriage, childbirth, and child-rearing, "the things people plant to anchor themselves/ beneath so much sky." We hear our own fears and wants echoing back to us from the deeply human center of this book. —Julie Marie Wade, author of Postage Due: Poems & Prose Poems and When I Was Straight: Poems In the rich and vivid poems of Viable, Julie Hensley rings the changes of a girl child’s life, from riding stick-horses in her yard in Big Stone Gap to sexual discovery after sixteen summers, to homesickness in her first apartment, then to love, marriage and, motherhood. The path may be familiar, but none of it is simple, and there are sharp turns of grief and reckoning along the way. Rooted in the natural world—mountain, desert, prairie, seashore—and seeing herself as a creature among creatures, Hensley offers us words of life in all its uncertainty, knowing that “Creation is still a gift/ a yolk bobbing uncertainly/ inside a fragile shell.” —George Ella Lyon (Kentucky Poet Laureate 2015-2016), author of Many-Storied House In Viable, Julie Hensley has woven a beautifully contemplated life, as the speaker becomes daughter, woman, writer, lover, mother, and branches outward into the voices of historical women who share the pain only mothers can. Sensual, intuitively musical, and incredibly observant, these poems turn a perceptive lens on the natural world and uncover a spiritual interconnectedness. Hensley’s poems reveal how life crashes into us and through us, how at times we feel lifted by this storm, and at others we feel like we may be going under, or perhaps sometimes both, such as when the speaker after staying up all night with a sobbing child notices the “sun slow / through the kitchen window: / a wafer / dissolving into morning.” —Matt Rasmussen, Black Aperture, Winner of the Walt Whitman Award

"Here memory is physical and startling," her speaker confides, and the same must be said of these poems--each one delicate and precise, pulsing a vital heat. With Hensley's guide, we travel through deftly rendered landscapes of the Great Plains and the rural South. We study the language of horses and historical figures. We probe marriage, miscarriage, childbirth, and child-rearing, "the things people plant to anchor themselves/ beneath so much sky." These accessible poems By Amazon Customer In the fully realized poems of _Viable_, Julie Hensley provides the richly detailed witness of the various stages of a woman’s life as daughter, sibling, lover, wife, and mother at various places in the rural South, the desert Southwest, Europe, and the Great Plains. These accessible poems, most of them lyrics rich with fresh imagery, explore the discoveries of youth, the passions of courtship and marriage, and the heartaches and joys of pregnancy and childbirth. Other poems, dramatic monologues, speak with the voices of women from history (Jacqueline Kennedy, Mary Tudor, Virginia Woolf, Julia Pastrana) and the Bible (Sarah) and touch on many of these same themes. Though the majority of the poems are finely wrought in free verse, the volume also boasts an exquisite poem written in that most difficult of received forms, the crown of sonnets: ”We Had Been Promised.” Moving highlights are poems dedicated to the author’s children: the title poem and “For Her to Enter This World.”

Great book, poor layout By Mullanphy This is a wonderful book, everyone should read the content, but the presentation of the book from this publisher is very poor. The publication is unnecessarily large. Huge blank margins surround each page. This is nothing more than a poor photo copy of the original book plastered onto a large page format. The copies of the original are sometimes missing characters around the edges and are not always clear. If you have the option choose a different publisher but do read the book in some format. It will change your life for the better.

Read Ebook I Was Amelia Earhart, by Jane Mendelsohn

In this brilliantly imagined novel, Amelia Earhart tells us what happened after she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared off the coast of New Guinea one glorious, windy day in 1937. And she tells us about herself.

There is her love affair with flying ("The sky is flesh")....

There are her memories of the past: her childhood desire to become a heroine ("Heroines did what they wanted")...her marriage to G. P. Putnam, who promoted her to fame but was willing to gamble her life so that the book she was writing about her round-the-world flight would sell out before Christmas.

There is the flight itself - day after magnificent or perilous or exhilarating or terrifying day ("Noonan once said any fool could have seen I was risking my life but not living it").

And there is, miraculously, an island ("We named it Heaven, as a kind of joke").

And, most important, there is Noonan....

Moving, inspiring, and very funny By A Customer I came to this book full of the skepticism of someone who is sick of the media's deciding 'this is the book,' or 'this is the movie of the year.' What a surprise, therefore, to find that this book is not as good as they said -- it's BETTER. A compelling hybrid of Hemingway, Garcia Marquez, and Virgina Woolf, Mendelsohn really does deserve the praise she earned for this book -- and more. The mainstream press seems to have picked up on the Don Imus aspect of the success of the book -- and ignored the fact that it's beautifully, and brilliantly, written. And almost no one picked up on the book's exquisite irony, its dry wit, its utterly deadpan sense of humor. A really invigorating read, it makes me want to go back to college to take a course and discuss it further. It's that good. Of course the book's success may actually have hurt it in some ways (as some of the almost spiteful comments here indicate), made people fail to see the book on its own merits, but I have a feeling that her next book will more clearly establish Mendelsohn for what she is -- the writer of her generation -- and show that she is anything but a 'one-hit wonder.'

However, it has been one of the very few contemporary stories that flirts with originality and exploits imagination.I read this book on a long, long direct flight from New York to Tokyo a few months ago. Perhaps the way I read this book had alot to do with its impact on me. Had I read it on the ground I would have surely perceived it differently. I have always loved airplanes, I have always been in love with something and I have always, always (don't quite know why or how) been fascinated by the disappearance of this remarkable woman. So take it on your next long flight. Pick a window seat and enjoy it. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in aviation, the vagueries of love and Amelia Earhart. I do not really see it as a novel, but it very well may be a profoundly eloquent, lengthy and enduring poem. One of the best in my recent memory.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Interesting story.... By HYC I like the beginning, it is very captivating... it is as if she is talking directly to me from after life... or I am dreaming about meeting her in the Heaven, and she is telling the story of the last day of her life....For that, I think the switching back and forth between first and third person works for me. It gives the illusive feels to the story. The idea of the story is interesting. Amelia Earhart's life after the crash is more alive than the one she lived before. I think the author established that in the first page of the book "...What I know is that the life I lived since I died feels more real to me than the one I lived before..." Her life before that, she was trap in a marriage without love; a union of business instead of love. All her life she has wanted to fly, to fly away from life...her wishes seems to be granted when she crashed onto the isolated island. She is living her life. And most of all, she may be in love for the first time...In this novel, her life may have just begun when the rest of the world think it has ended. In my opinion, part 1 is beautifully written; however in part 2 the writing and the structure turn flat, like diary entries that are written quickly just to jot down the events, so that you'll remembered in the future. I find myself flip through the pages impatiently want to get to the end.

This book begins with a poem entitled "Daily Prayer." It is inclusive and lifts up all of God's creation, man and beasts alike. As I read the poem, I wondered: What if each and every Christian began the day with this prayer, what a wonderful world it would be.

Secrets in Big Sky Country: A Memoir, by Mandy Smith

Review “Mandy Smith’s riveting account sheds new light on our understanding of the whole trajectory of childhood sexual abuse. With unflinching courage and candor, the author documents every aspect of this crime, from the grooming that takes place beforehand, the travesty of the abuse itself, the all too frequent family abandonment of the victim who ‘tells,’ and the tragic legacy of emotional damage it leaves in its wake. And despite the horrors, this is a tale full of humanity, told by someone who chooses to love life however she can.” —Sheila Munro, author of Lives of Mothers and Daughters: Growing up with Alice Munro “A woman’s voice breaking the silence, telling her secrets, makes a powerful sound. And that’s just what we hear in Smith’s truth-telling memoir, Secrets in Big Sky Country. Smith provides compelling witness to the violence―and its tragic after-effects―that too many girls suffer. Smith, in her important memoir, sheds light on what can only be called crimes against humanity.” —Sue William Silverman, author of Because I Remember Terror, Father, I Remember You “Mandy Smith’s compelling, courageous, and ever-engaging voice will awaken you to the vulnerability of children, amaze you at the way even the most abused find keys to nurture inner strength, and have you reinvesting in helping to guarantee all children receive the care and correct behavior they deserve from adults.” —Sheila Bender, Founder of WritingItReal.com “Smith’s courageous account of childhood sexual abuse demonstrates not only the prevalence of this universal crime, but the resilience of a young girl to survive and become a warrior in the fight to eradicate the problem.” —Marilyn Van Derbur, author of Miss America By Day “Harrowing and heartbreaking, Smith’s story brings to light the problem of childhood sexual abuse that is still happening across the globe today. Finding her voice as an adult, and becoming an advocate for prevention and awareness, will surely help others.” —Kristie Kernal OAASIS, Education and Outreach Director OAASIS: Oregon Abuse Advocates & Survivors in Service (Oregon Abuse Advocates & Survivors in Service) “Mandy Smith tells her truth and accomplishes much of her life’s work with this story. Secrets in Big Sky Country is both disturbing and engaging.” —Monica Myklebust, MD “Secrets in Big Sky Country is a compelling memoir on the consequences of familial sexual abuse. Mandy Smith writes honestly about her experience with a clear voice, revealing painful memories of a prevalent universal crime that crosses lines of race, religion, and socio-economic status. When the author of this book was a child, there was little support for children who were being sexually abused. Even though Mandy told some of the adults in her life about the abuse, her pleas for help were ignored and swept under a rug of secrecy. Mandy made the decision to share her story about abuse and the ways it damaged and shaped her life. In doing so, she lets other victims know they are not alone; that the tunnel they are caught in has an escape and there is hope at the other end.” —Ruth L. Ewers, MS, Social Worker, Writer

About the Author Mandy Smith resides in Portland, OR. Breaking the Veil of Silence By Brad Mandy Smith’s Memoir, “Secrets in Big Sky Country” is one person’s gripping story in a pervasive global pandemic: childhood sexual abuse. Illuminated in every page is the narcissistic nature of this dark subculture juxtaposed by a young girl that yearns to be accepted and loved; virtuously, honestly. Struggling to make sense of this malicious world she finds herself pushed into unsafe, precarious places. Over and over we see this child rise up and courageously fight for her life, her dignity, her self-worth only to be betrayed again and again by the people that were supposed to protect and love her most. In this memoir Mandy’s voice is heard, her gentle spirit is felt, and the damaging effects of childhood sexual abuse exposed. Here we witness the beauty, goodness, and light of an innocence that still longs to forgive and be whole. “Secrets in Big Sky Country” brings voice to a silent world traumatized by childhood sexual abuse. --Brad Hutchinson, Executive Director of The Gatehouse, a community organization that provides resources and support for people harmed by childhood sexual abuse.

By Michael Grogan When I read Mandy Smith’s Secrets in Big Sky Country I did so wondering if I would connect with her story.I say this coming from a non-child abuse background and so when I read her text I was immediately drawn in by her outstanding ability to tell it as it was.Having followed her blog for some time I was well aware of the abuse issues in her life and well aware she saw the writing of this volume as part of her healing process and as a means of realising her desire to be an advocate for childhood abuse victims. There were several things that struck me as I read through her memoir. Her courage and determination in telling her story after struggling for so many years with the memory of this abuse and realising that in relating her story there would be a two fold effect: assisting in her healing process and the potential benefit to other child abuse victims. Her commitment to telling her story in a language that any reader will connect with adds greatly to its appeal and value in the battle to raise awareness to childhood sexual abuse. Her precise recollection of conversation and retelling gives the book a rawness and thus invites us into the world of her childhood. The paradox of her relationship with her step-father, the daddy of her tale, presents us with a child who like all children sought the recognition and love of a parent but in her case, betrayal, brought life long devastating consequences.I am sure this book will touch the hearts of so many whether an abuse victim or not. Mandy Smith is not asking for sympathy nor forgiveness but rather an expose of a life impacted on by the insidious nature of childhood sexual abuse. This is her story in all its blunt reality.

By A Reader I bought this book soon after it was published, because I had come to know and care about the author through her blog. But then I was afraid to read it. I was afraid that reading Mandy's story might trigger the pain of my own traumatic memories. So I put off reading it for about two months. When I finally decided to read it and "get it over with" -- thinking it was going to be like going to the dentist and having a tooth drilled -- I found, to my surprise, that I could not put this book down. I actually stayed up all night reading SECRETS IN BIG SKY COUNTRY. And I am so glad I did!Yes, there were a couple of places that was hard for me to read. But rather than feeling triggered or traumatized by her story, it was actually a very healing and validating experience! Although the particular type of trauma that I experienced growing up was different in many ways from Mandy's, the effect it's had on me, both as a young girl and as a mature woman, is very similar. After reading Mandy's very well written story, I don't feel nearly as "alone" as I did before. In fact, I feel like I have a new and very precious sister-friend. You can't put a price tag on that.Oh, and it was nothing like going to the dentist, LOL!Thank you, Mandy, for enduring the pain of writing your story for the benefit of people like me. XOXO ~Linda Lee

Megan Loneragan should not be alive. In 1993 she was a beautiful young seventeen year old woman full of life and all of its possibilities. She was feisty and lived by her wits, with a sharp tongue and a prodigious sense of humour. 17th March 1993 changed all that, altered it forever, except for her spirit. That could not be squashed. Megan did not die at the accident site, nor did she die before arrival at the hospital 12 hours afterwards. She did not die during her nine months in the hospitals; or when she had a stroke; when her body began to shut down; when her heart failed; or when she had a cardiac arrest. Why? Perhaps it wasn’t her time but perhaps it was the sheer devotion and love from her mother who pulled her back from the brink time and time again. The love of her parents, sisters and all of her family and friends made the impossible possible and the improbable probable. Today Megan has overcome adversity and is a shining light of encouragement and motivation to those caught in the same nightmare; someone living with an Acquired Brain Injury; but living a full life. Megan’s story is of challenges, excitement, disappointments, elation and humour but above all else it is a story of her hard work; of a human spirit that soared beyond all expectations; and of the abiding love and commitment of a mother and a family to never give up. Miracles can, and do, happen.

It will hold you in its hand and squeeze your heart at times, but it will also inspire you. Judy Kenefick, the author, skilfully brings Megan’s story to us through the memories of family members and her own experiences as a close family friend. She tells the story with compassion and even some humour. At times it is raw and so very sad. You will anguish with Megan’s mother Anne as she refuses to give up on her beloved daughter. This is a “can’t put down book” - and I thoroughly recommend it.Margaret Nicol
