HMS Hermes and the Virgin Sailor is an auto-biographical coming-of-age narrative telling an enviable story, with brutal honesty, of how arrogance overcame youthful naivety, inexperience and vulnerability, at a time of promiscuity when Britain still had a large Commonwealth and military bases around the World. In 1967 a frightened young boy, of 15 years of age, travelled half the length of the country, on his own, to join the Royal Navy. With-in a year he finds himself in the Far East. He was desperate to be an adult and do adult things. He heard stories of the antics of seasoned sailors, in exotic countries, and dreamed of living the experiences for himself. He grew up without the love of a mother and was confused by emotions displayed by others and the needs of young girls. He was seduced by a woman, three times his age, which resulted in him being adrift on his new ship after being on board for less than 24 hrs. His first round of punishment and notoriety followed. A sophisticated mature lady, in Cape Town, showed him the needs of a woman and taught him the secrets of successful love-making. However, these new-found skills were used to his selfish benefit to take advantage of other young girls. Faint hearted feminists may find some parts offensive. The story tells of an immature young man getting into trouble, thinking about getting into trouble or being punished for being in trouble. During the voyage around the Far East he was bullied and victimised but eventually enjoyed his revenge. By his return, ten months later, he had been tutored, experienced and found confidence. He was cocky and arrogant yet his ego finally imploded on himself on his return to Portsmouth. The narrative is a roller coaster of adventure with suspense, surprise, emotion, erotica and lots of humour. This story needs to be told. No-one can re-live this. No-one now can join the military at fifteen years of age. The military bases have disappeared from Singapore and Hong Kong. The Vietnam War is over. Apartheid no longer exists in South Africa and Australia has estranged itself from Britain. Promiscuity has been replaced with a fear of aids. This is a true story. I was that Virgin Sailor.

Gave it 5 stars on not only because it is a great read, it also happens to be the number of days it took me to read it.This book is a fantastic look into the life of Jack that all former matelows will recognise. You'll chortle away at some of the dits and each time you look up from the page, you'll be hunting for a lantern to swing. I'm sure it was Chris Clark who led my dad astray in Singapore but the scary thing about most of the stories are that they could be true of the "incidents" going on when I joined the RN in '87 myself.A well written book that you'll not be able to put down and a great deployment book for those serving now. The only downside is the lack of pictures so the Reggie's might need to get a friend to read it to them ;)

I was intrigued by the title so decided to try the book . what I found was a wildly entertaining and funny account of the author's time in the British navy. As a Very young, adventurous and naive sailor, he found himself constantly in insubordination. I found myself silently begging for him to come to his senses before he found himself yet again in trouble with his superiors.Well written and certainly engaging even to a female not familiar with the mechanics of a ship. A few typos but nothing to distract from the enjoyment of the book. I would recommend this book to all adult readers

John Gabriel Borkman, by Henrik Ibsen

Review 'English Touring Theatre is the company of the moment' Daily Mail

Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: Norwegian

About the Author Born in 1828, Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and poet, often associated with the early Modernist movement in theatre. Determined to become a playwright from a young age, Ibsen began writing while working as an apprentice pharmacist to help support his family. Though his early plays were largely unsuccessful, Ibsen was able to take employment at a theatre where he worked as a writer, director, and producer. Ibsen s first success came with Brand and Peter Gynt, and with later plays like A Doll s House, Ghosts, and The Master Builder he became one of the most performed playwrights in the world, second only to William Shakespeare. Ibsen died in his home in Norway in 1906 at the age of 78.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent play By Israel Drazin Ibsen's plays are classics. They are enjoyable, intelligent, engrossing, dramatic comments upon society. They are relevant today as they were in the 1890s. The nineteenth century John Gabriel Borkman, like the twenty-first century's Bernie Madoff, bilked his friends of their life savings. Both were highly respected until they were caught and sent to jail, and both had lived well. Ibsen examines the impact that Borkman's nefarious acts have upon him, his wife, her sister, his son, and his friends. Borkman spent three years in detention, then five years in jail, then, after his release, eight years in the upper story of his sister-in-law's house, for he had no money any more. For eight years he walked back and forth in his room, like a caged rat, waiting for the day that he was certain would come when he would rise again. Ibsen focuses especially on three episodes. Borkman wanted so strongly to obtain wealth and power that he gave up what was important to him. Without realizing what he was doing, in a Faustian fashion, he gained power and wealth, but destroyed his own life and the life of another. What prompted his need for power? What did he give up? Who was involved? Who did he especially hurt?Borkman's wife hates him. During the eight post-prison years, she refuses to meet with him although they live in the same house. Why?Borkman's sister-in-law helps him for Borkman did not squander her funds. Why? Why also did she raise his son? What affect did all of this have on her and his son?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Danse Macabre By Keris Nine The subject of John Gabriel Borkman (1896) makes it seem like a companion piece to some of the writer's earlier dramas The Pillars of Society or Enemy of the People, dealing with the subject of corruption, or at least an act of guilt in the past on the part of an individual that is to have a profound effect on the wider community. It's the aftermath of such a situation that is viewed here but, as one of Ibsen's latter plays, the subtext of John Gabriel Borkman is that of an act of corruption by an artist, who has forsaken the truth and love for more material gains, a theme that is borne out by Ibsen's next and final drama, When We Dead Awaken (1899), where the subject is made even more explicit. In the case of John Gabriel Borkman, the figure at the centre of the intrigue is a disgraced bank manager who has served five years in prison for financial irregularities that brought about the collapse of the bank and the savings of many people in the community. Borkman has served a further three years locked in the upstairs apartment of the house leased to the disgraced family by his sister-on-law Ella Rentheim. Borkman's failings however go deeper than his mere failing as a banker - in the past he renounced his love for Ella in order to become a successful and powerful businessman. Now, both his wife and her twin sister are seeking restitution for the losses they have suffered and hope to achieve it through his son, Erhart. Erhart however is unwilling to join in the "Danse Macabre" that has erupted around him and wants to take off and find happiness for himself. The hints that there is a rather more autobiographical context to the drama are found to some extent in the suffering of most of the characters associated with Borkman. Nearly all of them however have to share responsibility for their own failings - a complication that makes the role they play rather richer and more complex - but the purity of the artistic endeavour that has been lost or corrupted can be seen in Borkman's former assistant Fodal, an aspiring writer who doesn't have self-belief, or who has rather sacrificed his art for the people around him, perhaps foolishly. Borkman doesn't lack in confidence, aware that the keys to the kingdom were once in his grasp, but that his ability to retain them has long since passed and he is now "dead" to the world. The question that arises is whether the dead can awaken and redemption be achieved, a subject that Ibsen also approaches in his last drama, and to which the answer here would seem to be an equally bleak and dispiriting one.

There are multiple typos on every page, in some cases rendering words incomprehensible. This is explained by the publisher as a cost-containment measure. So everyone wins! What a joke. This particular book should never have been published. I wish I had gone elsewhere to read this wonderful play.

Falk, by Joseph Conrad

About the Author Polish author Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of the greatest English-language novelists, a remarkable achievement considering English was not his first language. Conrad s literary works often featured a nautical setting, reflecting the influences of his early career in the Merchant Navy, and his depictions of the struggles of the human spirit in a cold, indifferent world are best exemplified in such seminal works as Heart of Darkness, Lord JimM, The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Regarded as a forerunner of modernist literature, Conrad s writing style and characters have influenced such distinguished writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and George Orwell, among many others. Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now.

Excellent characters, as one would expect of Conrad, and with an interesting plot. I do not want to give away details, but, like Heart of Darkness, it is framed as a bunch of sailors listening to one tell a yarn. If you like any of Conrad's sea stories, you will probably like this.

He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad. And that was all his patrimony. His very paternity was obscure, although the village of Gavrillac had long since dispelled the cloud of mystery that hung about it. Those simple Brittany folk were not so simple as to be deceived by a pretended relationship which did not even possess the virtue of originality. When a nobleman, for no apparent reason, announces himself the godfather of an infant fetched no man knew whence, and thereafter cares for the lad's rearing and education, the most unsophisticated of country folk perfectly understand the situation. And so the good people of Gavrillac permitted themselves no illusions on the score of the real relationship between Andre-Louis Moreau—as the lad had been named—and Quintin de Kercadiou, Lord of Gavrillac, who dwelt in the big grey house that dominated from its eminence the village clustering below. Andre-Louis had learnt his letters at the village school, lodged the while with old Rabouillet, the attorney, who in the capacity of fiscal intendant, looked after the affairs of M. de Kercadiou. Thereafter, at the age of fifteen, he had been packed off to Paris, to the Lycee of Louis Le Grand, to study the law which he was now returned to practise in conjunction with Rabouillet. All this at the charges of his godfather, M. de Kercadiou, who by placing him once more under the tutelage of Rabouillet would seem thereby quite clearly to be making provision for his future.

Serial writer Rafael Sabatini has done the world a service with his classic tale of love, lust, and luck. Set shortly before the French Revolution, the hero, Andre-Louis Moreau, learns more about acting, revenge, fencing, and love in his twenties than most people do in a lifetime. The storyline certainly has its moments of excitement, which will bring most adventure seekers to the tale. Based closely, but not exactly on the 1921 novel, both Hollywood productions (1923, Rex Ingram & 1952, George Sidney) made a splash at the box office; and, according to critics, Sabatini’s literary sequel (Scaramouche The Kingmaker, 1931) never met with the same success as the original. I came to this story from watching one of Sabatini’s other novel-to-film productions The Sea Hawk (1924, Frank Lloyd). Curious and impressed with the adventure and storyline, I embarked on a search for more Sabatini. A search that soon led me to Scaramouche. Yet despite all the thrills, the storyline slows down when Scaramouche involves himself with the commedia dell’arte. Sabatini infuses copious amounts of melodrama into the storyline, which at the time in the early 1910s and 20s proved popular. For adventure seekers, this makes for slow going, but if melodrama is your thing then you’ll be pleased. The great thing is that Scaramouche has enough thrills and romances for everyone to enjoy and maybe that is what makes it a classic.

Pervo First read this in 1959 (published in 1904) and was amazed. read again in 2013 and more amazed. at dawn of 20th century the "Dark Ages" were an article of faith. This is now less true, but few have even approximately the scope of languages and learning that K. possessed. Here every reader will discover authors and texts that are essentially unknown. most are now better known because of k.'s groundwork, but his synthesis remains nearly enchanting. this was one of those paperbacks edited by Anne Fremantle that launched a revolution in this country for quality paper books. if you know a lot about this period, you will learn more. if you know little about early medieval europe, this is still an engaging introduction to its literature.

Once a "nice pagan girl," acclaimed poet and scholar Judith Sornberger recounts her journey through faith in this beautiful personal memoir, highlighted by a trip to Italy. As a professor of English and Women's Studies, Sornberger had long been interested in the female role in scripture, iconography, and religious literature. When she began questioning her personal choices regarding Church and religion, Sornberger was drawn to art to find some answers. Her journey through the churches and museums of Italy, gazing upon powerful images of scriptural scenes, led her to insights into the place of Mary, along with other women, in a life of faith and service. Within this carefully told narrative and full-color images of many of the works of art that inspired Sornberger, the reader will find much to influence his or her own remarkable journey of faith.

Words that Bear Light on their Wings" By Susan Williams Beckhorn “Two sparrows rose from an olive tree, bearing the light on their wings, turning it to movement. This, I thought, breathless, is why I was born: as witness to these things.”~Judith SornbergerThe next best thing to making one’s own pilgrimage to Tuscany is to read Sornberger’s rich memoir of exploring the art, culture, and landscape of the place, all suffused with the light of her simultaneous, unintended journey inward. When a scholar/feminist, and above all a poet, interprets the art of the museums and churches of Italy, a true offering is given—in words that bear light on their wings. Expedition leader, Sornberger, guides the spirit as well as the intellect. This lovely book is both down-to-earth and ethereal, juxtaposing modern colloquialism with exquisite, jaw-dropping phrasing. It’s delicious, funny, and at times heartbreaking, as she delves into and reflects on other passages of her life while experiencing this new one. I may not find my own enlightenment there, but I might book myself a ticket to Italy just for the hot chocolate! And I’ve found a very special gift some dear ones.

Mental health, and depression in particular, has always been a very poorly understood condition, even within the medical profession. When the author sought help, she found varying degrees of competency in the medical profession. Finally, she was diagnosed with severe depression, and the psychiatrist prescribed Ect (electroconvulsive therapy) as the only solution that would be effective. An added dimension was that her psychiatrist helped her get a job as a psychiatric aid in a state mental institution, so she writes her story from the perspective both as a patient and as a mental health caregiver.

See the world like you never have before with Michael J. Hawron's engaging new memoir, Entertaining Detours.

This fascinating collection of individual chapter-length anecdotes are both funny and poignant…but always heartfelt.

The adventure begins with a chance email encounter as Hawron is planning a return trip to Hong Kong with his son and daughter.

As a young MIT student in the early 1970s, he launches a personal expedition around the world—one that ultimately takes him to more than thirty countries in five different continents over the span of three decades.

One of those countries is Hong Kong, a place that makes an indelible impression on him—one he wishes to share with his grown children. While planning the trip, he learns the family that has moved into his old home in Hong Kong has developed an environmental foundation to preserve the area—and the email exchange between them soon becomes the catalyst for Hawron's memoir.

As the book title suggests, however, life has a way of throwing in unexpected detours, and a devastating one occurs just three months into the memoir's creation. Undeterred, Hawron completes his narrative…and manages to bring his journey full circle.

Review "A riveting love story with an incredible majestic quality. As we walk the journey with author Anne Marie, we realize that our loved ones are never forgotten and transcendence is possible. A book that can heal, comfort and provide hope that heavenly realms exist." -Laura's List: Books for Women and Laura Ponticello, Publisher of Divine Phoenix Books. "Dancing in Two Realms is a beautiful, honest, love story. Anne Marie's way with words makes for delightful storytelling. I felt as if I were walking alongside her, experiencing her journey step by step. The love she felt for her husband while he walked this earth is tangible throughout the story, as is the love she continues to experience to this day. Love knows no boundaries." -Christine A. Krahling, Independent Writing Professional, Writer's Digest Award-Winning Writer

About the Author

Story telling is in our family’s DNA.

Raised on the tradition of enjoying good food and great tales at the family table, Anne Marie learned at an early age about sharing intimacy through the spoken word. Her large family often “loved loud” and even though everyone spoke at the same time, all were understood. She has fond memories of her Italian father starting most conversations, then her older siblings and their children shared their own stories of the day or memories of years past. Anne Marie also inherited the potential skill for the written word from her mother’s Irish roots being distantly related to famed novelist, James Joyce.

The love of family and sharing stories about life was a perfect springboard for Anne Marie to become a writer. But not until her husband, Tim died and gave her convincing “food for thought” and experiences beyond her imagination, did she feel compelled to document their history. Writing this memoir has been an incredibly healing experience with peaks and valleys along the way. As her life continues in this realm, she looks forward to the next chapter in her journey, with hope for whatever it may bring.

Anne Marie Higgins is a writer, nurse practitioner and family therapist who lives with her two cats, Lucca and Vivi in Syracuse, NY. Anne Marie is also is a confirmed “Hawkaholic.” From early spring through summer, she can be found watching the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology’s hawk nest cam as Red-Tailed Hawks Big Red and Ezra raise their yearly brood.

Keith Dancing in Two Realms is a moving account of the experience of serious illness, death, grieving and spiritual presence. I have long been acquainted with Anne Marie’s competence, her courage, her honesty and loyalty. I had no idea she could write so beautifully and subtly. After Tim’s death she was lost in grieving and then tripped, stumbled evolved toward a seeing, a way of thinking and engaging with the dance in the other realm. The dancing is a celebration of love outside the arbitrary constraints of time or reason. Her consciousness expressed in her writing had a moving effect on my consciousness. When you think about it virtually all experience is outside of reason. The story is about profound love and identity and creative apperception of experience. At times she aches with desperation and aloneness, but throughout the course of her story she finds so many important others who share these experiences with her. The sharing is deeply gratifying and enriching.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Tragically Beautiful story By jennifer Recently I was going through my own personal grief and I saw that this book was highly rated. I purchased it and I was not disappointed. I laughed, I cried, I laughed and cried simultaneously. Anne Marie shares her very painful experience of losing the love of her life and her journey from deepest grief to acceptance and ultimately to hope and the knowledge and conviction that love never dies. Truly inspiring story!

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Familiar Territory By Karl Janssen Love of Life is a collection of short stories published by Jack London in 1907. These eight stories are all set in Alaska or the Yukon Territory, with the exception of one set in northern California which also touches on the subject of the Klondike gold rush. Though overall not his best work, the collection contains a few exceptional pieces that elevate it above the mediocre.Three stories stand out here as a cut above the rest. In "Negore, the Coward," a tribe of indigenous Alaskans flees a troop of pursuing Russian conquerors. In order to win the heart of the woman he loves, the titular character must redeem his tarnished reputation by bravely ensnaring the oppressors. In "The Sun Dog Trail," London's recurring character Sitka Charley, a Native trail guide for hire, recalls how he led a mysterious rich woman back and forth across the frozen North on a grueling, epic manhunt. "The Unexpected" tells of a brutal act of violence in a remote cabin. The survivors are left to figure out what to do with the perpetrator. When so far removed from civilization, do conventional notions of law and justice still have any meaning? At the beginning of his career, London published four great collections of Klondike stories: The Son of the Wolf, The God of His Fathers, Children of the Frost, and The Faith of Men. Love of Life came out a few years later, and although it includes a few gems, overall these later stories are inferior to those earlier works, and often feel like rehashes of subjects already covered by London. "Brown Wolf," for example, covers ground previously trod by the novel White Fang. The north woods soap opera of "A Day's Lodging" is reminiscent of earlier tales of marital discontent like "The Priestly Prerogative" and "The Great Interrogation." And with "The White Man's Way," London has examined one too many times the Indian's perspective on those silly White men and their confusing laws. The story "Love of Life," though a rather well-written and suspenseful offering, amounts to little more than a preliminary attempt at the intense man vs. nature struggle that London would capture far more successfully a year later in his classic tale "To Build a Fire," only in this take the hero faces starvation rather than death by freezing. Of course, if you are approaching London's stories for the first time and have never read those other works, then Love of Life would most likely prove to be a thoroughly enjoyable read. Those who read a lot of London, however, will find that, judging by the standards of the master's work as a whole, Love of Life is a satisfying collection of stories, but not one of his best books overall.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good comp of JL stories By Corey Perhaps not these are not the most epic and well known of London's work, but they are well worth your read.

A Heart Left Open....Raw & Real By Shan One thing is certain, from the first page to the last, this author unapologetically lays her heart, soul, and all emotions on the table for all to witness. Each poem, each having its own perspective/angle to view how love had been acquired, reveled in, and subsequently lost, never failed to grab onto a piece of your psyche that felt like the words your being taken from your own mind. All poems were a reflection of the raw, poignant truth of heartbreak that many of us experience and this author was able to vocalise this skillfully via beautiful words. There is no doubt that each poem in this book was sprouted from a deep well of feeling and emotion, and I enjoyed them all. Moreover, I appreciated their ability to make me FEEL; to make me delve into matters of my own heart. All in all, definitely worth a purchase, and I look forward to all subsequent volumes.
