Excerpt from Words of Cheer for the Tempted, the Toiling, and the SorrowingAs we pass on our way through the world, we find our paths now smooth and flowery, and now rugged and difficult to travel. The sky, bathed in golden sunshine to-day, is black with storms to-morrow! This is the history of every one. And it is also the life-experience of all, that when the way is rough and the sky dark, the poor heart sinks and trembles, and the eye of faith cannot see the bright sun smiling in the heavens beyond the veil of clouds. But, for all this fear and doubt, the rugged path winds steadily upwards, and the broad sky is glittering in light.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. English edition of the biography, originally in Spanish, written by two journalists who were amazed when the same Pope Francis (Jorge Bergoglio) called them on the phone with the intention to participate in the book, and telling them his version of the most important events of his life; in particular, those years lived in Córdoba, in central Argentina. Almost an autobiography of the Argentine Pope that will surely become a source of reference for the future.

How Pope Francis evolved By Amazon Customer At last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!a book dealing only on what and how our present Pope Franciswas formed from early childhood through priesthood to the Pope he is today and nothaving to read endless pages of Argentinian political history. Granted, this politicalturmoil played some part in his maturing years, but not dominantly so. A veryimportant part of the book is the explanation of his mandatory 2 year exile toCordoba where he went through a very deep spiritual growth and how this playeda role in the path to his current state as head of the Roman Catholic today

From the moment Pope Francis stepped on to the balcony of St Peter's, people around the globe sensed that not only the Catholic Church, but the world at large, could be entering a new spiritual, political and social age. The pomp and circumstance that had characterised the Vatican for as long as most people could remember evaporated as Francis asked the throng gathered in the square to "pray over" him before he gave his first blessing. Not since John XXIII, had a new Pope opened the windows of the Church so widely to let in some much needed fresh air.

This biography of Pope Francis charts Jorge Mario Bergoglio's formation as a priest and bishop against the dramatic backdrop of Argentina's turbulent politics and the challenging principles he adopted as a member of the Jesuit order. It examines critically the extent to which his social conscience was influenced by the legacy of the country's controversial president General Peron and his wife Evita, and questions his moral standing during the Argentina military junta's ‘Dirty War' when he was accused of not having done enough on behalf of the victims, including fellow Jesuit priests. Few Vatican elections have generated as much interest as that of Cardinal Jose Bergoglio. Francis, Pope of Good Promise, the first detailed biography to include an analysis of Pope Francis's first year at the Vatican, will appear just as he makes his first visit to the US.

Well written but reckless By Martin Edwin Andersen Although providing what is in some ways an entertaining, informative and certainly well-written read, Jimmy Burns nonetheless recklessly buys into some of the worst propaganda launched against Pope Francis, focusing on his alleged role during his country's horrific dirty "war." Burns seems to enjoy massaging supposed human rights crusader Horacio Verbitsky's claims that, as Argentina's provincial superior of the Society of Jesus, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was responsible for handing over dissident Jesuit priests to a brutal far-right military junta. This when it was already clear, as fully reported last year in "Doble Agente, La biografia inesperada de Horacio Verbitsky," by noted investigative journalist Gabriel Levinas, that Verbitsky himself was an "efficacious collaborator" with the military during that time of state terror. By throwing coal on a visceral confabulation sold by Verbitsky, the work of Burns, the biographer of one-time soccer hero Diego Maradona, offers a critical penalty kick from those yet to publish about a Pope who, as few others, has inspired the world to work for social justice.

A family of six from the America decided in 1973 on an adventure to spend a year working a path around the world, starting in Japan for three months, then taking the Trans Siberian Express across Russia to Ukraine, Scandinavia, and on to Western Europe.  Four of the family members, Barbara (mother), Nancy (17), Keith (14), and Phyllis (10) were encouraged to keep a journal of their experiences.   This book is compiled from four journals showing for each day of the trip four different perspectives, each with an individual view point for their age and interests.  Not just a record of their impressions of the places they visited, it portrays the internal struggles just to keep the family together while facing exotic challenges.  It was an adventure of a lifetime.

Eastern Odyssey: A Family Journal of our Trek through Japan and Russia in 1973, by Barbara C Swenson, Nancy Swenson Collopy, Keith D Swenson, Phyllis Swenson

From the Back Cover Consider the year 1973: Vietnam war still winding down; the cold war is going strong; the Nixon presidency is falling apart. It is also the year that a family of six traveled to Japan, across Russia, and spent half a year in Europe before returning home from this trip all the way around the world. It Was the Adventure of a Lifetime. In 1973 Don Swenson decided to use his one-year sabbatical from the Los Alamos National Laboratory to visit some of the leading laboratories around the world -- particularly in Japan, Russia, and Geneva. It would be not only a professional visit, but also a trip for his wife Barbara and 4 children to see the world. Barbara insisted that she and the children keep a journal to record their experiences along the way.The first stop was Japan in Tsukuba about 30 minutes north of Tokyo by train. They visited Nikko, Hakone, Kamakura, Kyoto, Hiroshima, while just trying to hold the family together. The second stop was Russia, boarding the Trans-Siberian Railway in Nakhodka and on to Khabarovsk, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Moscow, Kiev, Leningrad, and ending up in Helsinki, Finland. This book is the compilation of those four different journals. For each of 146 days, there are up to four entries, one from each of the contributors. Each entry giving a different viewpoint of what happened; telling the same story in a different way.

About the Author This book is the work of a family, the diaries from 4 of the members, photos from the patriarch and stories about the youngest child.  Don is a world renowned Physicist, spending the majority of his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory, but his professional status, while enabling a venture of this magnitude, is really a background to the story of a family as they travel around the world.  Barbara, the mother, grew up in Alabama, married Don, an aspiring physicist and supported their home and family.  She was the glue that held this group together during this adventure.  Nancy was 17 during the trip and as such thought she had arrived, she went on to become a kindergarten teacher, and taught in Kuwait and Morocco before getting married having a child and adopting 4 children.  Keith was 14, "the boy", and as such his entries are very precise, and less emotional than the girls.  He is now VP of Development for Fujitsu in Silicon Valley, married with three grown children.  Phyllis, at 10, adds her own particular humor to the book.  She is now living at 10,000 feet in Colorado with the love of her life, working for IBM, and travelling the world.  She has two grown daughters who live in Albuquerque.  And alas Monica, whose contributions are the storied and antidotes that run throughout the book.  At three she was the darling of the family.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I LOVED IT! By Renee I LOVED IT!! I love to read! Maybe I'm biased because I'm friend with one of the "character's" of the book! Reading about the family's journey through other countries and how each ones perspective was different due to the age they were at the time was enjoyable. Knowing the different personalities in the family and how they interacted and responded to their adventure was fun. Not being able myself to ever have had an "adventure" like this it was fun to see it through the eyes of the family like we are along with them on their trip. I had many giggles along the way knowing I would react the EXACT same way in some encounters. I think it is GREAT when a family takes the time to share their journey in a way you don't see every day through the journals they each kept along the way.

I cannot imagine the courage and strength, of the family, to undertake such an adventure during the height of the cold war. The way the book is written, day by day, four different perspectives, it takes a while to get into the flow. I found myself going back, re-reading sections, to clarify events. I loved the different perspectives of the same events and activities. Mom really had some challenges maintaining any sort of "family life" and did a masterful job. The kids had to bond with each, other in spite of the age/gender differences, with seemingly, little serious conflict. I think the lack of "professional editing" enhanced the reading experience by portraying the real life perspective of each of the writers, in their own age specific styles. I would highly recommend reading this composite journal of a once in a lifetime experience.

By Judy Eastern Odyssey is a unique approach to a family vacation story. It's really a story of how one vacation formed the personalities, ambitions and careers of the travelers, which is completed in the thoroughly enjoyable Epilogue written 40 years later. It is shockingly honest and has the reader pondering one minute, "I wonder how I would have reacted to that" and the next shouting, "Oh my gosh! What was that mother thinking?" This mother forced her children to journal every night of a six-month journey few people would ever have the opportunity to experience. She knew what it would mean to them someday, and her hopes and aspirations are completely fulfilled in the family's now published book. The book is full of family interaction, as well as the overwhelming richness of the experience of world travel. Many pages give the reader a good laugh, while others recall a unique time in world history as this family is thrown into the middle of it. My takeaway? Every traveler should journal his/her experiences, not just to record a memory but to appreciate the impact your own odyssey will have on your life in total.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Collection By Royce Ennet I have followed Roman on Instagram and other social media platforms for several months. I really enjoy his visceral, raw, and open form of writing. There are many prominent social media writers who push out manufactured, milquetoast, bits of 'poetry' that feel gimmicky. Roman is not one of those writers. "Roman Newell Kills Poetry" delivers. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because some of the passages were short and left me a little wanting. But, there are plenty of passages that satisfy very well. He covers all kinds of material. There is truly something in here for every person. Romance, love, pain, war, combat, bars, arrests, all manner of day-to-day life. I admire him for his ability to capture a seemingly mundane moment and squeeze meaning out of it. He has a unique ability to capture select moments without force-injecting emotion or moralism into it. Sometimes you just want to be told a story without being told to feel any particular way. Roman weaves small moments into his poetry and lets you feel whatever you feel. A bit pricey but at 500 plus pages this is no average collection of poetry.

This author has obviously had a lifetimes worth of love, loss and memories. Not only are they entertaining pieces, but they also instruct. He forces you to think. He writes in such a way, that you have no choice but to put yourself in his place; In his frame of mind. I love how the author puts out every raw emotion. The good, bad and ugly. Personally, I want to read real emotions. I want to read real life situations. I want read real pain. This amazing book has all of that. It takes a brave person to put his life and thoughts out there for all of us to see and judge. If you like unfiltered and real, this is a must read for you.

Classical Dictionary Of The Vulgar Tongue, by Francis Grose

Review "It was a runaway success when published in 1811 by soldier Francis Grose, but now The Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue is getting tongues wagging again after being published online." —Telegraph

From the Publisher You don’t need to be a philologist or an etymologist to become engrossed in this book on the "vulgar tongue," popular language and not crude or coarse talk. This is the classic of all classics. First published in 1785, this is a reprint of the third edition that appeared in 1931. It contains the fashionable words and favorite expressions of those olden days, many of which have endured to this day and others that have long since been abandoned. Who would ever think that a "damper" was a snack before dinner? On the other hand, some might agree that "poisoned" is an apt expression for "big with child." It is guaranteed that you will find much to chuckle over in this book when you come across such expressions as "belly cheat," which is defined as an apron. There are also terms that might very well match current practices, such as "whitewashed," which refers to "one who has taken the benefit of an act of insolvency to defraud his creditors." You won’t want to put this book down.

About the Author Francis Grose (b. before 11 June 1731 – 12 June 1791) was an English antiquary, draughtsman, and lexicographer.

This is definately not a sit down and plow through it book, but rather one can pick up and put down as needed. As a whole, I found in interesting from a perspective of much of what we consider normal everyday language these days was only a couple of hundred years ago considered the "ebonics" of the time. It does very much carry the tone and verbage of the day, which may disinterest some, but fans of Victorian, Edwardian, or Elizabethan period speech should adore this, as well those whom are interested in such through some of the more fanciful spin offs such as Steampunk fans.I would say that this if you are looking for new (old) ways to spew forth vulgar phrases you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for phrases and even the occasional insult of Shakespearan wit, you can find more than a few gems within this book.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A classic now available in electronic format By R. Shelby Most students of the English language are familiar with the "1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue". Others will not be. It is not quite an obscure work but it does occupy a rather small niche. Although attributed to Francis Grose, the 1811 Dictionary is actually an updating of Grose' "A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" (1785). Grose died in 1791; the 1811 update was provided by a group of men who acknowledged Grose as the primary author.Grose collected words and phrases used by the common people, i.e. the everyday speech of everyday folks. Thus "vulgar" in the title means "common" and not "dirty", "rude" or "nasty". The 1811 Dictionary includes language which was ignored by lexicographers. Most scholars of the time felt that such language was not worth recording or reporting. Grose and those who updated the dictionary in 1811 probably were motivated by amusement as much as by lexicography. That is, they found the speech of the "common folk" entertaining. There is no doubt that slang can be amusing but it is also often enlightening, e.g. by providing cultural or sociological insights. Regardless of the motivation of the compilers, the 1811 Dictionary is a useful work for students of English language and culture. Those interested in the topic of American slang will find the work of Wentworth & Flexner interesting. Two particularly good volumes are Dictionary of American Slang Based on Historical Principles and Speaking Freely: A Guided Tour of American English from Plymouth Rock to Silicon Valley.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great Entertainment By Skyler B. Bailey This is a dictionary, written by a british soldier just after the American Revolution, of slang terms. The word "vulgar" means slang, though some of them are vulgar. This book was banned in military camps at the time. This is a second edition which came out in 1811.This book is hysterical, both educational and entertaining. It shows how normal people spoke over 200 years ago, and provides endless possibilities for insulting your friends. My friends and I are having a great time with it.On a more serious note, it was recommended to me by the folks with whom I am a Revolutionary War reenactor, on the premise that I should learn to use some of these words.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Title doesn't really reflect story, but worth a read. By Merry Bell I love Nick Hawke's writing style. He has a marvellous turn of phrase, and uses metaphorical language beautifully and skilfully. The story of 'The Viking Stone' takes a little while to engage. I enjoyed his language, but found the plot tension didn't emerge until over half way through the book. When it did emerge, it was gripping and well thought out. I also found Hawke's use of language put in the mouths of his characters too much. If it was for one of his characters, which would have marked then as intelligent and slightly eccentric, that would have been priceless, however, he didn't differentiate his characters by having different language for each. This book is worth reading, but if you're expecting a story that features Viking history, you'll be disappointed. The Viking stone is only a very fleeting plot device. I'd still recommend you have a read. I enjoyed it.

By Anna Harvey Rating: 2.5 Stars“Grief is a visitor that takes its leave most reluctantly.” – Edward Bryson.Sydney-raised Adam Hollingworth has been left devastated since his fiancée past away. He is now like a broken compass – a man without direction starting to doubt whether there is any point to life anymore. But when his mother finds him a teaching job within the marshes of Thames Estuary in England, Adam begins to develop an unlikely friendship with seasoned sailor and retired history teacher Edward Bryson who challenge Adam’s beliefs and expectations. As he starts to get settled, Adam faces the possibility of falling in love again and becomes involved in stopping a drug smuggling ring that threatens his life and his new friends. Nick Hawkes, author of The Celtic Stone, delivers a touching story about finding the way back from the brink of despair, proving that bringing happiness and fulfillment to others is the remedy to one’s own heartache.So. I need to fess up. This isn’t something I would normally choose for myself. I’m a YA fanatic through and through. Which is why it took me a little while to warm up to The Viking Stone. The back cover blurb was intriguing although I was worried the story would be too soaked up with heartache and melancholy that the actual plot would be revoked of any potential suspense and mystery. This was just my own interpretation but from what I gathered from the title, synopsis and even the prologue was that Adam and Edward would share a mysterious past that led back to Viking lore and would unravel a secret that was occurring in the present.I was super wrong.Ignore the Viking mask on the front cover it will only confuse you. Also, don’t take the prologue to mean anything too relevant to the plot. It is merely a significance of theme and an abstract rendition at that.In saying that, the novel was beautiful for what it was – a story about a lost man finding his way back to life through enriching the lives of a small country town. Edward Bryson breaks it down on page 60:“We are all inescapably trapped in relationships in which we have a claim on others and they have a claim on us. You are simply not yours to dispose of as you will. You don’t have the right.”Adam was self-absorbed in loneliness yet loyal with a major hero-complex that bordered on cruel and reckless. I found him a little too larger-than-life at times, as he always seemed to have the perfect solution to everyone’s problems. It seemed unrealistic that everyone would accept his answers as law.Claire, had that stereotypical love interest personality that didn’t do anything for me. She had a string of bad experiences with men in the past but she was blonde, pretty, artsy, stubborn and feisty. The side-story between Margaret and Gareth was the highlight of the novel. Gareth was humorous with over zealous schemes and a boisterous personality while Margaret was reluctant, closed-off and always over-thinking everything. They way their love story came about was entertaining and gratifying. The only thing that it could’ve done without was Adam’s advice on Margaret’s physical appearance. I personally loved that Gareth saw the beauty in her despite her perhaps drab appearance. She didn’t need a ‘My Fair Lady’ transformation.Another aspect that detracted from various scenes was all the boat jargon. To someone with zero knowledge on sailing, the technical terms were confusing and sloppily explained at best. This was most noticeable particularly in the action scenes at the end when Edward came up with a line of original maneuvers to help Adam and himself make their broken boat find it’s way back to the dock.To sum it up, the story was relatable in its depth and theme and enlightening in its redeeming message. A residual optimism remained with me once I had finished the story. I would definitely recommend The Viking Stone to anyone who has been emotionally damaged and feels isolated within themselves, but for me personally, it just wasn’t a favourite.Massive thanks to Rhiza Press for the free hardcopy.

THE VIKING STONE - NICK HAWKES By Amazon Customer THE VIKING STONE - NICK HAWKESAdam Hollingsworth is in turmoil as he struggles to cope with the loss of his fiancee, who died in a car accident that left him facing months of intense physical therapy to recover the adventurous life he used to lead.So when the opportunity to teach at a boarding school in England presents itself, he sees it as a chance to start his life anew. Upon arriving at the Thames Estuary, he meets Edward and his niece Claire who are destined to teach him how to approach life differently through the use of Edward's historic viking stone.Upon reading the blurb of this book, I was excited by the promise of historical fiction blended with a modern day thriller. What I found was ultimately quite disappointing. Though there is mention of the mysterious viking stone set to lead Adam on a new path, its presence is severely lacking. Whilst Hawkes teases his readers with the possibility of dual protagonists (that of a viking years earlier and Adam himself) he fails to deliver.Furthermore, whilst the book is easy to read - no mean feat for many a historical author - the characters, for me, didn't gel quite as well as they should have. The side romance between Claire and Adam - as hinted at by the blurb - seems too forced.Overall, this is not a bad book. It just wasn't the book I was expecting - the one promised by the blurb and somewhat misleading title). Lovers of light romance, with a dash of thriller may be drawn to this book but if you're looking for a historical fiction, modern day thriller, you may want to give this one a miss.

Great way to understand the History By Ky Nguyen As I practice magic/mentalism, understanding the birth of Spiritualism and mediumship is a great way to understand it's roots. This is a great way to understand the birth of hypnosis, and many of the natural phenomenon that people are afraid of.

On March 16, 1992, Elizabeth DeCaro, a 28 year-old mother of four, was found dead in her own home, murdered execution-style with two bullets to the head. Her husband, Rick, was immediately a suspect, having previously struck her "accidentally" with the family van after taking out a $100,000 life insurance policy on her. A Killer Among Us presents the true shocking story of Elizabeth's family and their search for justice against the man who continued to play father to the children whose mother he had killed.

This real-life case has fascinating legal elements - three trials, a death penalty conviction, and a dramatic reversal in federal court - and has received extensive local and national coverage.

Charles Bosworth Jr. is the author of the New York Times best sellers Previous Victims and Silent Witness.

First, I believe the book was very well written and despite covering three trials (which many tend to find boring), the book moved along at a good pace and never lost my attention. Second, I think the author did an excellent job of creating emotional attachments for the reader to every character in the story, whether it be one of the seedy characters or one of the sympathetic. Third, I find it amazing that so many people find it hard to believe that a horrible thing can happen to a wonderful family. Although the author does recount over and over how close the victim's family was, there is nothing wrong with a family being that close. It was not perfect -- Elizabeth delivered a child at 16 and never graduated from high school. It was not easy -- Mary raised 7 kids in a 1400 square foot house, forming strong emotional bonds with 4 children she had to continuously fight to keep. The author does not paint this family as perfect, he merely tells the story of a family whose love and support for one another overcome any obstacle, no matter how large. This book made me cry many times, and it was fascinating to read about the investigation and the trial, especially the families' reactions to peculiarities in the legal system that seem so unfair. In all, this is an excellent, well written book. I have read nearly 200 true crime books, and I rate this one in the top 10 percent both for the writer's talent and the emotional strength of the story. I recommend this book to any true crime reader.

By Diana Martinez (franciscom@worldnet.att.net) I read this book with an open mind only to find myself becoming part of the Isengham family's supporters. The author takes in the reader with all the descriptions necessary to envelop you in this sad tale of greed, adultery and ultimately murder. Your heartstrings are pulled in the appropriate directions as you become a part of the Isengham family and a witness to their loyalty as well as the loyalty of the DeCaro family in supporting their accused son. I found this book riveting and found it hard to put down. You know a book captures your spirit when you even dream about what you have been reading. The author has captured the turmoil in the two families but more so in the Isengham family as they all lose an irreplaceable piece of their lives. This is excellent reading for a rainy day.

A Great Case of Deja Vu By A Customer A Killer Among Us by Charles Bosworth, Jr., of the true-crime genre, was to me a riveting tale, not just because of its intrinsic literary worth, but because it took place in St. Ann, St. Charles, and the general St. Louis area, all of which I'm so familiar with, having lived for many years in St. Ann itself about a mile of the childhood home of the victim. I know this story from having seen it on TV, so it had no surprises; indeed, the book isn't written as a suspense tale which weaves itself to a surprise ending, the denouement being apparent from the start. Only the ultimate fate of the trigger-man was pending at the time of the book's publication. Despite the inclusion of virtual transcripts of three different trials, inclusions which often weary the reader and detract from the spontaneity of the tale, such distraction was not the case here, possibly because the subject was sensitively handled by the perspicacious author. A great read! I highly recommend it for all true-crime afficionados.
