LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER, artDax Poetry is a collection of Kapampangan poems followed by their English versions composed with structured meter and rhyme. The author artDax, a Kapampangan Poet Laureate prefers the traditional style of Kapampangan poetry to free verse because he believes that Kapampangan is a melodious language and it should not only be heard but felt. If you like the following English versions of some of the poems in this book, you will LOVE the Kapampangan versions! I’VE MURDERED SOMEONE Friends and town mates, I have something to confess I've murdered someone not too long ago I do not recall if I killed him with one single blow Or cut him into pieces and tossed him like a dress Even when he was gasping and was about to die I covered his mouth and choked him, he had no defense my anger for him grew exceedingly intense he had no right to live under this big blue sky He slithered on the ground just like a slimy worm His timidness made him an easy prey He had no strength, no right to see another day He had no courage he should not have been born I killed the boy I once was To become the man I am today I HAVE A SICKNESS Two hours had passed after the loving You peacefully lay in bliss But inside me, a desire that is throbbing Since birth I have been burdened by this a desire that through the bones is piercing a desire that persistently itches It is not my fault God knows well too I was born and will die this way He knows I never wanted to hurt you I've loved you from the very first day It is better if I never loved you I'm a doormat; you're a star in the Milky Way That's why we won’t see this through Now close to midnight I'll go quietly by And I may not come back this time Eleven times I have said goodbye And ten times I've changed my mind While I head to the door, you look so peaceful In bed I watch your face so sweet I don’t deserve your love so great and full But you can’t make me complete I wander through the night like I don’t belong The comfort I seek, drugs can't give My sickness is a cross I carry along My distressed soul looks for relief My sickness is PSAS/PGAD It has no cure my doctor says so I learned yesterday, my God there's a baby in me! Whose child this is, I will never know BALDO FROM MY BARRIO Baldo from my barrio, everybody liked him Known for his kindness that overflowed to the brim Barrio San Anton, that’s where he was known to dwell Whatever he did, he did extremely well He was used to hard work, when not tilling the land He would be cutting logs with an ax in his hand When not planting seeds, he was harvesting crop He repaired the roadways whenever potholes popped At the break of day he was ready to work Smoking and drinking were never his quirk That was how he won his wife's loud acclaim his three children adored him just the same When it came to giving he was number one He never forgot the poor of San Anton A formal education he failed to attain He would have been voted the Barrio Captain Yes there aren’t many people you’d come to know As gentle and sharing as big-hearted Baldo His body was healthy and he had a sound mind He seemed like a gift to the troubled mankind That's why people were baffled that one stormy night when he gave his loved ones a sick and twisted plight So ruthlessly he axed them, left them dead on the floor And then he hanged himself behind the kitchen door LOST IN TIME WITH YOU It was your first time and you told me so but I did not even care cause I love you so much just by looking at you I feel a joy beyond compare Last week in New England with the strength of our love you tried to take me in and I knew there was pain though you tried not to show the quiver in your skin In your office yesterday when everyone was gone I offered the joy you've known so far when I looked at you your face turned rosy red.....

Yuan Liang has published seven books of poetry in the past seven years, all of which were written in Chinese. Softening is his first collection of poetry in English, which is aimed to reach a broader audience and invite readers to be involved in a conversation between visible world and spiritual world, and common phenomena in daily life and meaningful insight beyond. Softening is divided into three sections: the Passage of Word, Ferry, and Tracking Habit. In this collection, he continues to explore his inner domain, endeavoring to capture the aesthetic moment in life and the intensive experience between musical tone and philosophical probing. His poetry starts the journey of pursuing for poetic inhabitability, the land of eternal soul, and the colorful day dreaming. These poems provide audience with a unique perspective of human existence through the eyes of an American Chinese. His works are full of imagination with metaphors, symbolism, poetic intuition, and an exotic atmosphere, which poetically lead audience to a transcendental realm. He is praised by other poets as "He is talented at catching overtones, realms beyond phenomenon, and spiritual moment of epiphany.", and "Yuan Liang is good at using dense imagery to 'sermon' his logic, beauty and grace, giving his reader space to think deeply.", and "Whether it is sound of lyre, hoofs, wind, or singing, have all turned into his spiritual code and romantic verse."

A song from far and near By allana bourne Like a “song from afar,” Yuan Liang’s book of poetry titled Softening, both “festers in your heart” and turns “mud to clean water,” as in his title poem. In “How we see the world,” words “drizzle” like rain while telling stories that are “washed by dew,” and “all of these relate to how our eyes perceive." Liang’s eyes perceive in amazing ways. There is so much to find and ponder in these poems that I feel I can read and reread them forever and still find something new to wonder and gaze in awe.

I adore Louis Tracy books and cannot get enough of them; and while he did not write as many White & Furneaux (the two detectives in the novel) fortunately he was prolific. This is a fabulous tale of evil, danger, intrigue and, in the end, love where the writer finds himself immersed in a murder after overhearing a man and his daughter speak outside of a theater. The man says that he's going one place but later the hero, Francis Theydon, sees the same man in the street below his apartment, and the man goes into #17. And the next day the owner of the flat is found murdered! Francis has been invited for dinner the following evening and to his surprise he is meeting that same man. White and Furneaux are a curious pair, each balancing their skills off each other. There's plenty of danger and intrigue as those on a death list receive little ivory skulls....who will be next! If you love the stories and language of the early 20th century, try this nifty mystery. I'm sure you'll love it!

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. White & Furneaux: A Scotland Yard odd couple By Paul Roberge A young writer in London finds himself accidentally mixed up in the case of a brutal murder with exotic clues (joss sticks and ivory skulls). The plot's a suspenseful one and moves at a quick pace. The "detecting" is done in part by the writer (whose partly motivated by a love interest) and two Scotland Yard men: White and Furneaux. White is the stolid and earnest policeman while Furneaux--a native of the Isle of Jersey--is imaginative, quick, explosive. The odd-couple nature of their relationship as they work together in a highlight of the novel, and I wished there had been more of it. A Chicagoan names Handyside also joins in the battle against the bad guys (Handyside, the handy side-kick???). He's a bighearted, uncomplicated, resourceful, even heroic American of the "innocents abroad" type. One aspect of the novel that dates it is the Victorian/Edwardian British male's helplessness before the mysteries of a woman's sensibilities or an "Oriental's" mind. The Chinese often appear in thrillers of the period (most prominent of all as Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu), and they're typically portrayed as over-subtle and inscrutable by contrast to plain-spoken Englishmen. Even the law-abiding Asians are seen as caricatures, possessing age-old and mysterious modes of thought that--innocent as the character may be--are alien and automatically suspect. With regards to "Number Seventeen" as a work of detective literature, this racial stereotyping diminishes the novel by introducing caricatures instead of real people. It smells of fantasy lit. Tracy might have brought in a gang of enigmatic elves instead to the same effect. The issue of class and wealth also appears. It's no spoiler that the middle-class hero gets the high-society girl, but Tracy finds it necessary to mention incidentally that the hero's brother-in-law is in line for a knighthood--so as to make the coupling more credible to his Victorian readers, perhaps?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and I love mysteries from this era By James Gary First Louis Tracy novel I've read. Impressed, and I love mysteries from this era. You have the heroic young leads, romance, action, and touches of wit with two mismatched Scotland yard inspectors forming the backbone of the novel. I understand Tracy used the same two inspectors, in the same way, in other mysteries, just the young folk change. I'll be looking them up. Well written and a unique idea for me. Highly recommended.

The son of a minister, James A. Joseph grew up in Louisiana’s Cajun country, where his parents taught him the value of education and the importance of serving others. These lessons inspired him to follow a career path that came to include working in senior executive or advisory positions for four U. S. Presidents and with the legendary Nelson Mandela to build a new democracy in South Africa. Saved for a Purpose is Joseph’s ethical autobiography, in which he shares his moral philosophy and his insights on leadership.   In an engaging and personal style, Joseph shows how his commitment to applying moral and ethical principles to large groups and institutions played out in his work in the civil rights movement in Alabama and as a college chaplain in California in the turbulent 1960s. His time later as vice president of the Cummins Engine Company provided an opportunity to promote corporate ethics, and his tenure as Under Secretary of the Interior in the Carter Administration underscored the difficulty and weight of making the right decisions while balancing good policy analysis with transcendent moral principles. In 1996 President Clinton selected Joseph to become the United States Ambassador to South Africa. His recollections of working with Nelson Mandela, whom he describes as a noble and practical politician, and his observations about what he learned from Desmond Tutu and others about reconciliation contain some of the book’s most poignant passages.Saved for a Purpose is unique, as Joseph combines his insights from working to integrate values into America’s public and private sectors with his long engagement with ethics as an academic discipline and as a practical guide for social behavior. Ultimately, it reflects Joseph’s passionate search for values that go beyond the personal to include the ethical imperatives that should be applied to the communal.

Saved for a Purpose: A Journey from Private Virtues to Public Values, by James A. Joseph

Review "I am so grateful that James Joseph has chosen to share lessons learned from a lifetime of service in this fine book." (Marian Wright Edelman, President, Children’s Defense Fund)"Ambassador James A. Joseph brings a new approach to the question of why ethics matters by offering a compelling case for ethical decision making drawn from his wide and distinguished service in the real worlds of church, business, charitable foundations, politics, diplomacy, and higher education. The moral reasoning in Saved for a Purpose is incredibly clear, and it is written from an ethical perspective that is at once deeply rooted in religious conviction and informed by careful attention to the moral dimensions of decisions about major social, economic, and political issues." (Joseph C. Hough Jr, President Emeritus of Union Theological Seminary in New York and author of Black Power and White Protestants)"James A. Joseph has had a remarkable career. I have enjoyed working with him and watching him implement the values and ideals of Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. He has written a book that I hope will be widely read." (Andrew Young, former Congressman, United Nations Ambassador, and Mayor of Atlanta)

About the Author James A. Joseph is Professor Emeritus of the Practice of Public Policy at Duke University. Joseph served as the United States Ambassador to South Africa from 1996 to 2000, and as the Under Secretary of the United States Department of the Interior from 1977 to 1981. He was the President and CEO of the Council on Foundations, Vice President of the Cummins Engine Company, and served as Chaplain of the Claremont Colleges. He is the recipient of numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the Order of Good Hope, South Africa’s highest award to a citizen of a foreign country. Joseph is also the author of Leadership as a Way of Being, Remaking America: How the Benevolent Traditions of Many Cultures are Transforming Our National Life, and The Charitable Impulse: Wealth and Social Conscience in Communities and Cultures Outside the United States.

Speaking from the perspective of the baby boomer generation, we have been waiting for this book for a very long time. This the is the first time I have read anything that begins to make sense of the many issues that have tormented my generation since I was a child. The issues Ambassador Joseph talks about have shaped my life, but only minimal understanding beyond the surface of what the issues actually were, issues which still exist today. This is a work that calls for us to have the conversation, to meet as human beings without preconceived ideas of any absolutes of what might be right or wrong, and to ask questions rather than have the answers. It is through the questions that we will be led to solutions, accept and respect differences, come to understanding and finally solutions for the common good of our families, our communities and our nation. This is a significant story, beautifully written and easy to read.Everyone, young and old should have this book on their reading list, so that as we raise our families, serve our communities and our nation, we will begin to heal the fractured world we live in today.

Instructions that extend generation By Jozef Syndicate A Louisiana boy charged with morals and strong education evolves into a world leader with a steady hand of compassion and civility. James Joseph's insight guides readers to reconsider how conflict is managed in public and private sectors and how working together to ask difficult question can lead to discovering best solutions. What a story. What a guide for managing groups, families, and communities to fulfill purposes that would extend generations. Thank you, Mr. Joseph.

Lessons for the ages: pursuing an ethical life By Amazon Customer Ambassador Joseph's book is truly extraordinary, both in the context of his amazing life story, and the leadership role he played while on the cusp of many momentous societal shifts in the 20th century. His journey toward, and practice of moral leadership is quite illuminating, and provides tremendous insights into America and the world as we grapple with many of the national and global issues that have shaped human progress over the past decades. We are fortunate to have the superb intellect and moral voice embodied in a distinguished observer of the human condition. James Joseph’s book tells us the story of a masterful leader who has been successful in practicing "ethical leadership" on the grand stage, including: a key role in the 1960s civil rights movement, as a pioneer in shaping corporate social responsibility in a global corporation, as a member of the Presidential cabinet, as the US Ambassador to South Africa during the Mandela presidency and the democratic transformation of that nation, and in leading a key organization in the reconstruction of Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. We should be thankful that he survived an aircraft crash in the south Pacific, and was “saved for a higher purpose”, and that he continued to so ably serve humanity.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. love God, love others By C. S. Godwin This book by Robert Bradshaw is a fascinating and interesting read. In a compelling tribute to his deceased father, the author provides a series of letters his father wrote when stationed with the US Merchant Marines at the conclusion of WW2. The letters are vulnerable, touching, and inspiring. In the late 1940s, interestingly enough, I think many of our young men would have thought about life the same way. Family, God, Country, and Work were the only things that mattered and that comes out clearly in these letters.Though some might be perplexed by the author's seemingly unrelated commentary at the end, I believe it fits quite well with the narrative of the letters. His thoughts reveal the theme of his father's life, and his wishes for the reader- to find fulfillment through service. There is nothing new under the sun. Men & Women make a life out of what they give to others, and the way we do this in past ages, current times, or in the future will always be the same: love God, love others, and do your best. This advice never goes out of style because it is the truth.Well done.

This book is a true honest description of what life was like for one young Merchant Marine. The author published real letters his father wrote home to his parents during his time enlisted from 1944 to 1946.War is always more intense than we know about. The military see and experience things that we can not even begin to comprehend. This book only gives you a small glimpse into the horror of war.Remember to love Family, Love God, Love Country.I received this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions in this review are 100% my own.

Only useful for searching ENGLISH By brainout There's a reason why this edition is free: Gibbon's Greek notes or quotes are instead transcribed as "[GREEK TEXT]". Never get Kindle for anything to do with Greek or non-Romanized letters. Frankly, Kindle has gotten much worse over the last two years. As if the people working there hated their customers. Kindle's interface is horrible, now. You can no longer copy or use it for citations you can paste into your research, and if you complain (good luck figuring out how to send them a messasge, and NEVER use the forum, it's populated by vultures) -- if you manage to complain, no one listens. I SO regret all my many Kindle purchases. So I guess now they gotta give it away; pity, because the original Kindle program five years ago, was to die for: a real boon to researchers. In Ebay, I'm bidding on a CD version of Gibbon (already have two hardbacks and a full set on 3.5" floppies). Hopefully it will have the Greek notes. I've asked the seller who is in the UK for confirmation. When I get it, I'll annotate that here.

By A Customer Essentially, the author was able to transport readers to a gritty version of Zane Grey's west with sufficient skill to satisfy any western fan.The long-running television series emasculated or bowdlerized what the author portrayed.Treat yourself to a Mulford.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Review of Clarence Mulford's novel Tex By Emory Stephens Mulford is a very entertaining writer, and this book is superb. Anyone who is a fan of the old Hopalong Cassidy books will like this one. I particularly like the classic struggle between right and wrong, and that is portrayed well in this book. Probably not everyone will like it, but for me it is one of the best books I have read in a long time.

Aristide Saccard a réussi. On accusa Zola d’obscénité.

They can be especially annoying for people learning French, who may not recognize the errors as such right off and will get frustrated trying to make sense of the garbled text. The Gutenberg Project version was correct in the instances where I sought help there. Otherwise, La Curée would have rated five stars.

Jack Caufield never imagined that he would wake up one day and find a dead woman in his bed. That sort of thing wasn't supposed to happen to guys like him. He was on his way to law school, but instead of fielding Socratic questions from law professors, he finds himself facing the third degree from a bunch of angry cops. Despite their efforts, they find nothing incriminating, and Jack is allowed to get on with his education and his life.

Over the next 15 years, he becomes a modestly successful corporate lawyer, a well-paid but insignificant cog in the Wall Street machine. He's resigned to playing a disappointing role in the system that he has come to disdain, until he learns that his encounter with that unlucky girl may not have been coincidental. Confronted with the possibility that the men who run the prestigious financial institution that he now represents may have been involved in a shocking conspiracy, his search for the truth is complicated by the knowledge that discovering it could cost him the career that he's spent his life chasing.

Peripheral Involvement explores Jack's struggle to reconcile the reality of his life against his expectations and to refine his understanding of success. Along the way, it looks at the absurdity of the modern-day financial industry, the current state of the American Dream, our propensity for self-deception...and baseball.

Unhappy but resigned to his life in corporate law, Jack's life of material comfort is turned upside down when two mysterious deaths from his past return to torment him. Is the ex-FBI agent pursuing Jack a paranoid alcoholic or is Jack about to be overwhemed by powerful and sinister forces? Brillantly written, 'Peripheral Involvement' spotlights the angst and alienation of our modern lives.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great read By James Newsom Extremely in depth character development, I feel like I really know Jack Caufield, like I too have sat at the bar stool talking with him. The author nails the internal conflict of a corporate lawyer struggling with continuing down a known path or coming to grips with figuring out what to be when he grows up. I would love to see the story continued to see how the striking events of Peripheral Involvement shape his future, with more plot twists and external forces, of course. Overall, 5 stars, great read.

Those five stars do not mean Flecker as a turn-of the-century poet comparable to Yeats or D.H. Lawrence or A.E. Housman or - well, you get my point: Flecker is not equal to these Modernist Masters. By five stars I mean he fulfilled his poetic mission with variety and sincerity. Compared to acknowledged 20th master poets Flecker falls short in sheer talent. But his visionary spirit runs through these forty-two poems and animates themfor those who appreciate, say, the music of Frederick Delius. In fact, Delius wrote the beautiful score for Flecker's Arabian Nights HASSAN, a worthy effort in Orientalism. For years when I taught in a Humanities program I quoted Flecker, although I knew nothing about him: THE POET'S BUSINESS IS NOT TO SAVE THE SOUL OF MAN BUT TO MAKE IT WORTH SAVING. In the best of these poems he does just that. Through character sketches, travels, reflections, his poems embody these values of soul and spiritual renewal. In a poem addressed to a poet in the next millennium he writes: SINCE I CAN NEVER SEE YOUR FACE . . . I SEND MY SOUL THROUGH TIME AND SPACE TO GREET YOU. YOU WILL UNDERSTAND. That indicates the largeness of Flecker's soul and the degree of his poetic faith. It is simply rewarding to be in the presence of sucha man and artist. I don't want to over-sell Flecker, but I find that his forty-two poems speak to me with the eloquence of a dedicated poet who was also a man of truth and goodness.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Better formatted than the "Collected" version By Limey The formatting of the poems is distinctly better than the version of Flecker's collected poems I have reviewed elsewhere ("The Collected Poems of James Elroy Flecker"), but it is obviously not as comprehensive. Unfortunately, in particular, it does not contain his best-known poem ("Yasmin").

One hand it overwhelmed me with joy to have an antique version of the book By Rachael Pitts I knew it would be used, but when I received it I found a print from the 1940s! One hand it overwhelmed me with joy to have an antique version of the book, and on the other it's quite old, not in bad shape, just a little delicate. Overall, I'm very happy and the read is great so far!

By CoffeeGurl It'd been a long time (a decade or so) since I read this Elizabeth Gaskell classic before I watched the BBC adaptation on DVD and loved it. Rereading this novel was the best decision I could have made because I hadn't appreciated it then the way I did now. North and South captures the social divide and how the manufacturing and trading industries were revolutionizing in the 1850s. Margaret Hale, the daughter of a respectable clergyman, and her family move from the south of England to the industrialized northern town of Milton after her father leaves the church because of his conscience. Margaret is appalled with Milton and the vulgar, uncouth ways of tradesmen and merchants, whom she also sees as uncivilized and cruel. However, will she change her mind after she meets and gets to know the dashing Mr. John Thornton? There are many twists throughout the novel.I was able to appreciate the romance and building of tension between Margaret and Mr. Thornton now, especially after having watched the BBC miniseries and the wonderful Richard Armitage playing Thornton. Right now, to me, there are four memorable classic literary heroes -- Mr. Darcy, Heathcliff, Mr. Rochester and now Mr. Thornton. He is gentler and not as brooding here as he is portrayed in the miniseries, but he is as compelling as I had remembered him. The last few pages are my favorite, especially this line: "While she sought for this paper, her very heart-pulse was arrested by the tone in which Mr. Thornton spoke. His voice was hoarse, and trembling with tender passion, as he said: `Margaret.' " What a romantic line and I wish it had been added to the miniseries. The ending at the train station in the miniseries is wonderful (if a bit anachronistic), but it would have been even better if the aforementioned line had been incorporated into the scene. All in all, this is one of my favorite Victorian classics. Elizabeth Gaskell isn't quite as known or as celebrated as Dickens or the Brontes, people who had been big friends of hers, according to her biography, but she was a gifted writer in her own right and her talent shows in this wonderful gem which I will reread again in the not-so-distant future.

Surprisingly modern tale of class conflict, management theory, and of course, love By Amazon Customer I read the book, like many other reviewers here, after I had watched the brilliant BBC miniseries starring Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe. I definitely agree with the comments of many reviewers here that you somehow seem to develop a finer appreciation of the nuances of both after doing that.A lot of reviewers have covered the ground admirably on the story itself, so I won't go into too much detail on that. In addition to the fine development of plot and characters alike, what I found refreshing about the novel were:a. Unlike a few other writers of her time, Elizabeth Gaskell focuses a lot more on the thought processes and feelings of the male characters in the novel. For example, you don't get to hear a lot of what Darcy or Edward Ferrars are thinking in Pride and Prejudice, or Sense and Sensibility, except almost tangentially. In sharp contrast, Mrs. Gaskell gives quite a detailed peep into what John Thornton and Richard Hale are thinking, throughout the novel. As someone who is always interested in the differences in thought processes between the sexes, I found this to be refreshingly different from other novels of the time.b. Being in business, it was quite a new experience to read about John Thornton's evolution first as a business owner and then as a "leader", to use that overused term of today. Mrs. Gaskell appears to have a remarkably sophisticated understanding of both management and labor issues. The examples that stand out in my mind - John Thornton's increasing interest in exploring a better construct for labor-management relations beyond the mere "cash nexus" (towards the end of the novel), and his practice of building what we would call a business case today, as he asks Nicholas Higgins to put some figures together for the new cafeteria.c. A valuable peep into the mores of the time - for example, despite being fond of Bessy Higgins, Margaret recoils in horror at the thought of visiting her after Bessy's death, a point glossed over in the BBC mini-series, - it gives you a rare insight into things like death and burial customs of the time,.I must agree with a few other reviewers that the last few chapters seem a little rushed, but from an overall perspective, it is hard to beat this novel for its pure wholesome enjoyment value - more serious and deep than a Pride and Prejudice, and still light enough for people like me who cannot take Thomas Hardy. A definite five stars!

Yes, there is a very slow start to this novel. I wonder whether that's because it was first serialized by Dickens, and Mrs. Gaskell was paid by the word. And, yes, the ending is rather abrupt, especially preceded by the last few slow chapters. Maybe Dickens lost his patience. In so many ways, though, this novel is a treasure. It's not easy to write a political novel with a strong love story and good characterizations. Gaskell takes on quite a bit and mostly succeeds in her task of describing the changes industrialization brought to England. She balances her sympathy for the workers in the factories with the dilemmas posed to the mill owners by new machinery, competition from abroad, and the threats of potential workers' strikes. She contrasts very effectively the excitement of this new way of life against the nostalgia for the agrarian past. These were new concepts in Victorian England, but they are not so foreign today that we cannot readily understand their significance. She gives us a sympathetic and spirited heroine in Margaret Hale, who is wise beyond her years. Another colorful character is Nicholas Higgins. I found myself looking forward to his scenes because he provides the humor in an almost-humorless book. (It is funny at the end, though, and I would have liked to have seen more of this tone.)Mr. Thornton is a character we can readily identify with--someone who triumphs over adversity and seeks to constantly better himself. Someone with high standards, yet none higher than he holds himself to. Margaret is his match in every way.I did see many plot similarities with "Pride and Prejudice" in the love story. We have characters of different class backgrounds who are initially repelled but who come to appreciate each other and are kept apart by misunderstandings and circumstances. The proposal scenes are strikingly familiar, and the first proposal includes almost the same language (re gentlemanlike behavior) that Elizabeth speaks to Darcy. And we have a Lady Catherine DeBourgh character in Mrs. Thornton, who does her best to drive the lovers apart. But I can't fault Mrs. Gaskell for borrowing plotlines from the master. Although Gaskell is a strong writer, she does not quite have Jane Austen's gift for revealing the humanity in her characters with humor and affection. There is not much "fun" and no banter (until the very last lines of the book) in the North and South love story. There are many plot contrivances and conveniences, too, which compel us to suspend disbelief. A few too many rapid deaths, a character's coincidental presence at a key scene, another character showing up in an unexpected place, and more. But these limitations serve to drive the story and allow us to focus on the strong moral characters of our central characters and our strong wish for their eventual reconciliation. In the Penguin edition, it is also rather disturbing to find the plot given away in the footnotes. I read the footnotes religiously to orient myself, but I don't understand why they have to mention so many plot occurrences (especially big things like deaths and proposals) ahead of time. So, if you don't want to know how things go, read the footnotes (and preface) judiciously.OK, I've written a lot of negatives and yet I give the book 4 stars. Despite its flaws, North and South takes on a lot and mainly succeeds. I love its ambition and its great heart. I love that I learned a lot about English history at that particular time. I love that it rewarded me for getting through those first 150 pages with a rich, compelling story. I love that Mrs. Gaskell held my interest to the end. As Victorian novels go, this is surprisingly modern and a worthwhile read.

Poetry. California Interest. "TOO MUCH HAPPENS is a collection that mingles personal and major social concerns in an attempt to give voice to a sense of increasing fear for a cherished world in crisis. Catastrophic wars, child soldiers, dried lake beds, the relentless onslaught of bad news. 'What shall we do with what we know?' TOO MUCH HAPPENS poses a question for which no answer is clear in a world skirting a perilous edge. 'Days, slaves to the sun, / the sun herds them into shadows. // A valley fills with traveled light / and snowmelt.' Once you step in between these lines, you know you've reached home: heart- and-mind, the body-and soul of why poetry matters. Nearly one of a kind, Kathleen Weaver lyrically weaves love and social awareness with language. To a cyber-bashed, corporatized, red-lit planet prison, her bright voice rejoices in green-lights.'"—Al Young
