Joseph Crosby Lincoln (February 13, 1870 – March 10, 1944) was an American author of novels, poems, and short stories, many set in a fictionalized Cape Cod. Lincoln's work frequently appeared in popular magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post and The Delineator. Lincoln was aware of contemporary naturalist writers, such as Frank Norris and Theodore Dreiser, who used American literature to plumb the depths of human nature, but he rejected this literary exercise. Lincoln claimed that he was satisfied "spinning yarns" that made readers feel good about themselves and their neighbors. Two of his stories have been adapted to film.

Story delighted By Paul Haist A simple story carefully crafted with a plausible plot, strong characterization and a resolution that, despite its predictability, is deeply satisfying. The down east vernacular is charming. In the first few pages I thought, "Maybe this is too quaint for me." It wasn't at all so. The story delighted me.

For over 30 years the former Senator Charles W. Walker has dedicated his life and career to public service. He was the first African American chosen to serve as Senate Majority Leader; the second-highest elected position in the Senate Leadership. In this new book, FROM PEANUTS TO POWER, Walker outlines his fascinating journey of going from being a poor, young boy in the south whose father was a share-cropper to becoming a political powerhouse and entrepreneur. Throughout this compelling story he carefully weaves in the importance of wealth accumulation, the steps to achieve it, and his lessons learned for overcoming adversity. Walker's main goal of writing this book is to help get people out of the poverty trap that millions of Americans are stuck in. During his political career Walker served on countless committees to improve local and statewide communities; led nearly every committee in legislature, with the most significant being the powerful Appropriations Committee; and received hundreds of awards and honors for his tireless efforts and philanthropy. Walker is also a highly respected and successful businessman who has founded and grown several multi-million dollar companies. These ventures have led to his becoming one of the largest minority employers in the state of Georgia. Now, in the next chapter of his professional life, Walker is passionate about motivating individuals, college students, corporate groups, small business owners, and entrepreneurs on how to overcome obstacles to achieve the personal and professional success they desire.

Lumpkin Charles Walker has put a lifetime of perspective into this succinct, easy to read, how to book about what he believes it takes to be succesful in America. I was impressed at how he takes the experiences of his life and takes you step -by-step from living in poverty, through building several businesses, to reasons behind his incarceration. Noteworthy is how he discusses the accumulating of wealth and the importance of leaving a financial legacy, as well as one built on solid values, and a good education. Insightful and thought provoking.

This story will inspire and empower those who are truly committed to personal development. Charles Walker's story is compelling and should be a reminder to all of us that regardless of political party affiliation, most Americans long for an opportunity to achieve success on his or her own terms. For the record, I classify myself as a card-carrying conservative Republican, so I feel my perspective on this book is one that should be considered. This book reminded me that republicans and democrats spend too much time bickering and don't spend enough time celebrating the very fact that we have much in common.

This book focuses on, not what the naysayers are looking to find, but on what the general reader should hope to gain....Insight on what it takes to grow from adversity, face obstacles while rallying against them, and gaining insight on what makes you whole. A single experience does not define you. The journey is the thing from which true legacies are made. Well written and powerful!

Coral Reefs, by Charles Darwin

About the Author Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Corel Reefs By Steven This book came with all the original diagrams which I have noticed many such books lack without telling you. The diagrams were scanned from the originals but were of a small size making some of the small text illegible. Perhaps the original pictures were larger. Some companies that reproduce old books use optical character recognition (OCR) that copies the text but not the drawings and then don't do anything to add the drawings. They may even not format the text properly. A company called General Books published by Macmillan And Company has done this. Other companies scan the pages so as to best capture the text, which is not always best for the pictures which may have shading, and just reproduce what they have scanned including any underlining of text by the books owners and any other marks most of which could have been removed. One such book, The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication Part One by Charles Darwin published by Kessinger Publishing's Rare Reprints, mentions stripes on a drawing of a horse, which is rather dark all over, where no such stripes are visible but when I looked the book up on the net the drawing is far lighter with clear stripes. One company who's photos seem acceptable, although pale, is Bibliolife at least in Volume II of Alfred Russel Wallace's My Life: A Record of Events and Opinions and who's drawings in Charles Darwin's The Formation of Vegetable Mould, Through the Action of Worms, With Observations on their Habits are also OK, although I have not seen the originals to make a comparison. New York University Press's Charles Darwin book Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants also has drawings that are OK, although again I have not seen the originals. People looking for reprints of old books should try to find out the quality of any drawings and even if drawings in original printings are included before buying.

It's a slightly cleaned-up version of the free public domain book available elsewhere, but neither of them has any graphics of any kind. Good ebook quality, but Darwin refers to his figures quite a bit, and it's pretty hard to know what he's talking about without them.I mistakenly thought the other reviewer was also reviewing the Kindle version, but note that he's reviewing the HARDCOVER version.

The Women Widowed to Themselves is Lora Mathis' first full-length book of poetry. Bold, feminine, and unapologetic, it deals with themes of mental illness, femininity, and regaining autonomy over your body.Meggie Royer said: "Lora Mathis debuts her first collection of poetry with a kind of ferocity and brutal honesty that is all too often difficult to come by in a world built to raise the voices of men and silence those of women. These poems, like their author, have been wounded and touched in all the wrong ways, but still shine through with the softness and snarl of something brave and true. Mathis will take you through the failed parties and the bad beers, the self-loathing and the desperate texts that all come with being a young woman who struggled to survive the growing pains and aches of adolescence, and leave you full of awe and clarity."

Mathis tackles relevant themes (such as femininity, power, and the interplay between the two) while remaining loyal to lyricism. The vulnerability in this work is unparalleled; Mathis does not hesitate to make readers uncomfortable, to challenge common conceptions of what it means to be feminine, what it means to deal with mental illness, what it means to exist without hardness despite pain. I believe this should be required reading for everyone who is currently coming of age, who has ever resented their capacity to feel, who is interested in supporting queer feminist art, or who enjoys poetry that is going to have a lasting impact. You won't regret this purchase.

About the Author BK Lyon has worn many hats from soldier to scientist to copywriter to do-gooder. He lives in a city formerly known as Batmania which is located in Victoria, Australia, and plays far too much chess. THE UNBECOMING OF JONATHON JONES, his first novel, has been called ‘A Modern Day Greek Tragedy’ by Derek Parker (THIS TATTOOED LAND) and ‘Unmissable… Groundbreaking’ by John Darryl Winston (AI: INITIATIVE and AI: BOSS). Watch for the sequel.

Jonathan Jones in particular is well-realized, very natural and honest, whose voice comes through clearly. The metaphors and description are also well drawn, and at times take you by surprise with a bit of a fun streak. The only reason this book does not get five stars from me is, quite simply, it needed an editor. Spelling and punctuation errors are rather rampant, particularly as the book progresses. In its way, this is not altogether a bad thing, as it betrays the author's enthusiasm; it's quite clear he got caught up in the story! (Particularly those fight scenes, which are also very well thought out). But at times it was difficult to tell what was going on or who was speaking, and by the end I was still a little confused.Editing issues notwithstanding, I found this a highly enjoyable read. The author's voice is strong, no small feat for even a more experienced writer. The dialogue is well written on the whole, and the premise is intriguing. I look forward to the next book, and particularly how it grows and improves. Well done!

His father sees a hare and tells Jonathan to shoot him, but Jonathan freezes and the hare gets away. Jonathan wakes near a pond, with the hare he almost shot, licking his face with no rememberance of how he got there and thats when the real tale begins. It's plot is pretty basic. A depressed super-powered guy named Jonathan Jones hides behind normalcy as he tries to get a new lease on life after meeting the girl of his dreams. However, Lyon's execution of the plot is clever, and the symbolism throughout the story is simple and powerful. We soon learn that Jonathan has powers, that he is some sort of superhero. He doesn't want them, he only wants to be normal. But what person wouldn't.This was a very very different read for me. It was gripping and the short quick chapters were flipping through my hand faster than I could take a breath. This is one of those books, where from the get you are engaged and at the end your like wow, what a great read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It was worth the wait! By Patricia Fairweather Romero When one thinks of Super Heroes, Jonathan Jones is probably not the type that first comes to mind.A depressed superhero, desperately trying to be "normal" meets his dream girl and the adventure begins. The multiple plot lines along with short chapters keep you engaged and wanting more.A unique take on the Boy meets Girl story as well as the Superhero story. We have come to expect the action, and seemingly all powerful traits of the Superhero stories, but this one gives us the human emotions that most of those stories are missing. Can you be a Superhero and still be depressed? It seems you can. Mr. Jones may be an unlikely superhero but a hero he is.The underlying voice of depression comes through as only someone who has been there can make us see.I was very glad that this was Book 1 and I will definitely read Book 2! Congratulations Mr. Lyon!

In the whole history of the English people there is no period so absolutely heroic, so full of enthralling interest, as that in which the might of England made itself apparent by land and sea—the period which saw good Queen Bess mistress of English hearts and Englishmen and sovereign of the great beginnings which have come to such a magnificent fruition under Victoria.

But it takes place in the 1580s, during the time of Sir Francis Drake, on the high seas.If you like pirate stories, well, this is close but not exactly a pirate story. It is an adventure, and keeps you turning the pages to see what happens next.Don't want to spoil it for you, so why not just dive in and start reading it?I really enjoyed this and was sorry to see it end.

As others of that genre, it is a bit predictable, and the good guys are very good (and usually English) while the bad guys are evil (and usually Spanish). Still, I enjoyed it and would recommend to anyone looking for a story of that type.

Poetry and video games don’t often occupy the same space at the same time, but Kay Porter Winfield’s Virtual Worlds Virtual People proves once and for all that they can (and maybe they should). These poems rocket with character-driven action and conflict: electrical shocks, diabolical plots, flashing swords, and cliffhangers galore. But they’re also full of moving, emotionally charged resonances that wobble back and forth between cartoonish overabundance and real pathos. This book is a cathartic reminder that reading is one of the oldest video games of all, but also that the virtual worlds and people we encounter in play are sometimes more real to us than we are to ourselves.

—Matt Hart

In her exciting debut collection, Virtual Worlds, Virtual People, Kay Porter Winfield takes the archetypal characters and scenarios of popular video games and spins them into bold new narratives that comment on contemporary society. Mythic in nature, the poems offer keen and poignant observations that spark a new way to investigate both the world of virtual reality and the world of human character. Readers, whether seasoned gamers or novices, will find throughout this collection an inquisitive longing to engage with our humanity even in the wake of our deepening technological landscape. With unforgettable imagery that neither shies away from nor succumbs to violence, Winfield’s poems center on personas who navigate love, grief, loneliness, and despair in order to formulate identity and promote equality in worlds that, though virtual, are heartbreakingly recognizable.

—Christine Butterworth-McDermott

Poetry isn’t the only tradition Kay Porter gives homage to in this debut collection. Virtual Worlds, Virtual People may be the first book of its kind – one that unabashedly gives praise to the cult of video games while simultaneously deconstructing the roles of players and avatars. Equal parts poet and gamer, Porter’s no stranger to the terrain: from Tetris-blocks-in-love to plumber-saving-Princesses, these poems portray a version of 21st century reality where “boys laugh at player pictures, / men discuss the right angle to hold the stick / for optimal fire. My trapped screams / crackle as static over the headsets / as the next match starts without me.”

—Gary Jackson

When my oldest son, Tony, was killed, I knew I desperately needed God. I felt lost. It was uncharted territory for me, and I needed guidance. In this book, I share how God guided me through my days of mourning and revealed truths from His Word that gave me hope and continues to sustain me today. Throughout this book, you will also read other testimonies from people who have lived through the crushing reality of losing a loved one. My prayer is that this book will be a blessing and a help to everyone who reads it. This book is, at its heart, my testimony-the reality that our God understands and meets us in the midst of our grief and offers us great hope!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hope and encouragement By robert This is a wonderful tool for those who grieve. Sharon has written from her heart, which I am sure was painful to do. After drawing the reader in with the story of the loss of her son and her own personal journey of grief, she equips the reader with scripture and biblical truth to cling to in times of despair and to give hope when there seems to be none. Having suffered from depression, some brought on through the death of my mother, I found her story both encouraging and helpful. I know from experience those who grieve may not have the energy to read an entire book, although I found it was easy to read, I recommend if you can only read a little to read Chapter 5: Old Testament Wisdom for Those Who Grieve.

Excerpt from The Naval History of the United States, Vol. 2With the capture of the "Chesapeake" in June, 1813, we abandoned our story of the naval events along the coast of the United States, to follow Capt. Porter and his daring seamen on their long cruise into far-off seas. But while the men of the "Essex" were capturing whalers in the Pacific, chastising insolent savages at Nookaheevah, and fighting a gallant but unsuccessful fight at Valparaiso, other blue-jackets were as gallantly serving their country nearer home. From Portsmouth to Charleston the coast was watched by British ships, and collisions between the enemies were of almost daily occurrence.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. What our Grandfather's Knew About US History By Anthony Vancampen Why only 4 stars - Mr. Abbot isn't always exactly neutral. Not a bad thing, and ultimately not a major item. There are a few errors of fact. But they are the sort that are mostly harmless. The only really bad one is where he describes the CSS Hunley as a "David," this is a major error as the Hunley was as nearly a new thing in warships as will ever be seen. The David craft were, low silhouette steam launches, while Hunley was a full submarine, with 99% of the items that would mark any submarine from either Simon Lake or John Holland.I would recommend this book and its companion volume The Naval History of the United States Volume 1 for anyone who wants a better feel for the way Americans looked at and thought about our Navy in the early part of the 20th Century.
