Winner of the 2016 Eric Hoffer Award and a "Best Books of 2015" winner from USA Book News, this acclaimed biography of the brilliant, controversial Buddhist teacher Rama - Dr. Frederick Lenz (1950 - 1998). In this free-spirited adventure of a wild, sports jock teenager who transforms into an iconoclastic, innovative leader, boundary breaking is de rigueur as reported by the 100+ students and colleagues interviewed by author Liz Lewinson. Meditation, the empowerment of women and career as practice are but three of the core teachings covered in this book. Dr. Lenz ran into opposition, of course, but he kept his priorities straight. When he visited Nepal at age 19, he encountered an aged monk who informed him that he was a lineage bearer. He was to revive an ancient school of enlightenment. He was to find his many past life students and help them achieve joyous enlightenment in this life or at least set them securely on the path. He was to do this in the West, using Western means. In the East, centuries-old traditions maintain meditative pathways to enlightenment. In the West, facing a blank canvas, Dr. Lenz found new ways to build mental/meditative prowess through careers such as computer science, visits to American "places of power," knowledge about real gender equilibrium, movies, music, and dance. He taught these skills to American students and observed their success. When you read this fast-paced biography, you enter the inner teaching circle of baseline American Buddhism. "This fascinating biography captures the wisdom of a genuine, compelling teacher who combined absolute miracles with humor, fun, and adventure. When you read this fast-paced book, you feel you are there, learning and transforming. This is an original and exciting read." -- Lynn Andrews, author of The Medicine Woman Series

Review "Rama" in this case is one Dr.Frederick Lenz, American Buddhist and teacher; and the biography of Dr.Lenz is recommended for any who want greater insights into his life andBuddhist belief in general. It's a spiritual, transformational biography that surveys his life and usesthe results of over a hundred interviews to build a wide-rangingconsideration of his many achievements. (And for novices to Buddhism,'gaze in my direction' is a meditation instruction having to do withfocus and being open to inner messages and beliefs.) An introductory chapter tells how the author came to meet Rama whilesearching for a new spiritual teacher, and how her own ability to 'gazein his direction' immediately revealed his 'siddha' ("In theliterature of Buddhism and Hinduism, a siddha is a magical or mysticalpower attained by an advanced practitioner of meditation.")Months went by before she was to become his student and embark on ajourney that would lead to an understanding of different perspectives on American Buddhism and Eastern belief systems. Dr. Lenz's actions in promoting his teachings and mission and expanding his students are documented in a vivid account based on the author'spersonal interactions and those of others involved in Rama's circle: "This year, in 1982, what we're doing together, besides just having agenerally good time, is trying to get you to walk through the doorwaysto eternity. Because each time you walk through those doorways yourperfection will manifest in a new and exacting way. . . . What I'mtrying to do is to have you not be pedestrian or plebeian with thisstudy. That is to say, we're not simply studying how to get high in anew way. You're studying existence itself, to become it." From his journeys across the country to spiritual revelations, socialchallenges, and changes, this is filled with insights on Rama'sperspectives and approaches to spiritual growth: "He likes usfor the being that he sees can emerge after our layers are peeled back.He does not expect us to be holy, just honest."It is this blend of Rama's wisdom and his life journey in teaching groupsand individuals across the country that makes this biography so unique:part travelogue, part spiritual reader, and part biography, it's acelebration of his life and perspectives as much as it is an account ofhow American Buddhism spread across the nation. From musical projects to dance, lectures and meetings to meditationencounters, Rama's wide-ranging influence powers not only his life andthose of his students (including the author), but becomes the focalpoint for the evolution and dissemination of Buddhist belief across thecountry. Any interested inaccounts of Eastern religious thinking and growth will find thisbiography filled with unique, perceptive insights.Diane Donovan, Midwest Review of Books

Brillant Historical Glimpse Into the New-Age Movement By James Forgy After the 1960s and the tumultuous upheavals of the times, came the gentler me-generation, the new-age seekers of the 1970s and 1980s. Unlike today, dropping everything to see the latest guru or practice the newest spiritual fad was commonplace. It was a different world then in the post-Vietnam era. Today's worries about middle-east wars, Wall Street bailouts, and NSA spying, were just background noise during the new-age movement, self-realization was the game -- and onto this colorful stage strode Dr. Frederick Lenz - Rama.Rama was bold. He drove a Porsche, dated beautiful women, and was not embarrassed to say that he wished he and his students all become rich. Rama bravely took out full page ads touting a past-life resume going back to Atlantis. He offered a spiritual smorgasbord of topics, ranging from radical feminism to Buddhism to Castaneda's mysticism. Young bright-eyed spiritual aspirants couldn't help but notice this flashy well-dressed new-age guru inviting the thousands that saw him for a "journey into the void."We don't hear much about Rama today, but he appeared on Phil Donahue, was given a full hour with Larry King, and sadly had the obligatory hit pieces produced against him by Dateline and Current Affair. Unfortunately, the abuses by some of the other gurus of this period created a media fascination for Rama who Newsweek even crowned as the "Yuppie Guru."I feel 'Gaze' will become even more relevant as the years go by. For those of you too young to have experienced the new-age movement, this book will convey to you the zany optimism of the times, the eclectic world-view, and the lust for adventure that your typical spiritual seeker embodied. I envision historians of the future utilizing this book as reference, a guiding star that places us right in the center of new-age America. If you are genuinely interesting in Buddhism, Vedanta, or mysticism this book is a treasure of thoughtful quotes by the PhD Guru Dr. Frederick Lenz. If none of that stuff interests you, it is still a great journey through the spiritual self-help renaissance of the late 20th century. Rama once predicted that Liz Lewinson, the author, would be his biographer. I think her detailed and driving storyline would have exceeded his expectations. So if you want to escape all the worries of the modern age, let this book transport you to the vibrant core of new-age America and beyond.

A rare and intriguing insight into the life and teaching of a modern spiritual teacher By Francis Wang I was a former student of Rama and have lived through most of the events in this book first hand. Since 1997, I had decided to break away from Rama and his group to pursue my own life interests. I viewed my time of study with the Rama group as interesting and life changing but ultimately had to choose my own path. As time passes, most of my experiences with the Rama group became a faded memory.I started reading this book as a curiosity because I was bored. A third of the way through the book, I was amazing by the amount of details and efforts that went into the book. I became fascinated as the book literally took me on a ride to relive the eighties, and what a wild ride! I read the book in a few short days as I kept wanting to read and re-experience parts of my earlier life.Over all, I thoroughly enjoyed this fast pacing book. It presented an honest look into one of the most intriguing and controversial spiritual movement of the 80 and 90's. Rama was a very unconventional teacher and his teaching often caused people to rethink their basic assumptions on spirituality. In a way, he reminded me of my other idols of our age - Bruce Lee, Michael Jackson and Steve Jobs. They were all not only filled with crazy passions about their lives, but were so unconventional in their approaches that they caused major disruptions in traditional values. They were people who believed in themselves, walked their own paths and did not compromise.

It was amazing to hear the “success story” of how someone meditated, progressed on the path and reached that rare goal - enlightenment. I was so impressed with this book that I bought copies for my friends and they loved them.I loved hearing the accounts of Rama’s amazing meditations where gold light filled the auditorium and people’s minds were transformed from the mundane to the divine. What really impressed me was his dedication to the Light and how he used his remarkable abilities to uplift, empower and transform the lives of everyone he came in contact with.Excerpts from Rama’s talks clearly explained topics on meditation, mysticism, Buddhism, compassion and just having fun with life. Reading this book has strengthened and renewed my aspiration and practice.
