Two Tents is Jim Haskell’s memoir of section hiking the entire Appalachian Trial over two decades and his self-discovery as a husband, father and man. It depicts how Jim’s childhood fantasy evolved into an achievement for his lifetime. Jim relates his adventures with bears and perilous cliffs; his memories of spectacular thunderstorms and sunsets; his stories about the diverse people and places he encountered along the way. He also serves up a generous helping of the 2,200-mile AT’s nearly 100-year history, including his insights into the trail’s two “feuding founders.” The stories in Two Tents are true. However, Jim uses a fictionalized two-day hike with a character named Rex to relate his experiences through a series of vignettes. “Though the device is unconventional in what is, for the most part, a nonfiction book, the ploy works,” stated the Bangor Daily News in the fall of 2015. “The author is able to frame the real tales he shares with readers through trailside ‘conversations’ with Rex.” Two Tents appeals to hikers and non-hikers alike. The Maine Sunday Telegram’s review in December 2015: “You don’t have to be planning a hike on the Appalachian Trail to enjoy Two Tents; Jim Haskell gives you the highlights and much else beside. So put your feet up and relax.”

Haskell I was curious about this book for a couple of reasons including the last name of the author matching mine. Secondly, I have done some hiking in the White Mountains as a camp counselor back in the late 60s which included segments of the Appalachian Trail. At first I was a little put off by parts of the book since parts were fiction in terms of the arrangement of the story and protection of identities of strangers met on the hike (which is explained in the beginning). So parts of the book rated a three -- enjoyable but somewhat difficult to see where it was leading. The last part of the book was excellent starting with the history of the Appalachian Trail and using some of Jim Haskell's considerable history skills and Phi Beta Kappa scholarship (Boston University). His description of unexpected obstacles, rescues of hikers, dramatic weather events, swollen rivers, failures in preparation, and encounters with bears, were some of the highlights. The triumph of the last day which completed the trek was also heart-warming and shared with a number of his supporters -- both family and friends. His hike was completed about five years before he finished the book and since he did the trail in segments it is a different tale than what would have been told by a through-hiker.

Setting a Life Goal and Achieving it in Hiking Boots By Amazon Customer You never know what kind of day you'll have when you set out hiking.Rainfall makes trails unpassable, mapped routes get altered after the guidebook's published, and what looks like an easy descent can become a near death experience.Haskell tells of his own 21-year long quest to hike every mile of the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail in sections of 2 weeks or less while managing a marriage, working at a nonprofit and raising a son. At home he read trail guides and planned hikes, packed freeze-dried meals and secured rides. When hiking he experienced the fleeting joy of a ridge-top Shenandoah sunrise, the serenity of solitary days in the woods and the raw fear of finding trail in waist-deep unbroken snow. Unforgettable people drop into the story, sharing rides, tips, equipment and campfire stories. With each hike he added more miles to his list. This is not a book of self-revelation disguised as a hiking account, but it's a story of a person with a goal who set out to achieve it and didn't let go. Haskell shares his mistakes and those moments he received 'trail magic,' those unasked-for bits of good karma that come just when you can't make your way forward. Section-hikers don't get the respect that thru-hikers do, but arguably it's more fun to take time to explore the land you're moving through, stop and visit a Civil War site or an aboriginal settlement. And shower, sleep in a bed and eat fresh food before returning to the trail. The world of AT hikers is a world unto itself, a unique place whose inhabitants take trail names, share deeply personal stories and trade practical info on trail facilities. Once in a while they carry each other out on stretchers. It's never boring, and neither is this highly readable account of taking on a challenge to get from Maine to Georgia one step at a time.
