With the publication of his debut novel, The Soft Exile, writer/musician Eric Kiefer ended a five-year, 12,000 mile exodus. The fictional memoir draws heavily from his experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. During this time, Kiefer gathered the raw material and life experiences that would later become The Soft Exile. The book chronicles an idealistic, young American’s decision to join the Peace Corps after an aborted suicide attempt. He spends two years as a TEFL volunteer in the fabled lands of the Mongolian desert-steppe, searching for redemption and an alternative to modern American life. Along the way, he constructs a low-powered radio station and tries his best to go native, all the while lusting for an answer to a question that will either doom or save everything… “What is the value of a good deed?” “Word for word, it’s not exactly what happened to me out there,” Kiefer said of Soft Exile. “But it’s about as close as you can get without becoming a confession. It’s a novel for the expatriates within us all.”

Unique, surprising By Sarah Cooke The Soft Exile provides an intriguing look into the modern American psyche (the American Dream, suicide, guilt and redemption). Plus, it's a great travel novel, succinctly written and punchy, yet descriptive and full of a Bukowski-esque romance for the world.I particularly enjoyed one passage, where the main character discovers a secret, Mongolian graveyard, which really brought the following climax of the story home to me. Definitely a book for the fan of the weird but poetic ending. (I won't spoil it, but spirit animals play an unexpected part!) Other favorite parts of mine include an unexpected encounter with Christian missionary dentists, the vivid descriptions of traditional Mongolian customs and places, and of course, the Mongolian Death Worm.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the Peace Corps, Mongolia, travel, or the "literary memoir" genre. The author must read a lot of Kerouac, Pahlaniuk, Hunter S. Thompson, etc... you can see traces of the influence of each in The Soft Exile, and I would also recommend this novel for anyone who enjoys these authors. In the end, The Soft Exile was definitely a book that made me think, and filled me with a hopeful but-slightly-sad appreciation for life. A great novel that I hope many other Amazon readers will discover!

The Soft Exile immerses the reader into the day to day life of rural Mongolia. Throughout the novel, I could feel the pains and joys the narrator experienced during his time in the country ... the fierce winters and sandstorms of the Gobi Desert, endless starry skies, the hardships of adjusting to a new way of life, the moments of unexpected serenity. I love the honesty and wit of the main character's psyche, as well as his interaction with the denizens of Mongolia. The other volunteers depicted in the novel provide a great spectrum of alternate motivations and a basis to gauge the narrator's own journey at key points in the novel. It's his search for redemption and quest to answer one of life's questions, "What is the value of a good deed?" that leads us through this amazing soul searching journey. The reader is offered numerous opportunities to ponder and reflect upon this question, humanity, and oneself.

By Corinne Apostle The story of a young man from suburban NJ who, contemplating suicide (however superficially), decides to enter the Peace Corps, venturing to Mongolia to "save the world," only to discover that it is he who needs saving. This is a good first attempt and I'm sure the author will go far if he continues to write. My criticism would be poor editing (typos and misspellings).
