A different perspective of Appalachian living during the mid 20th century years. Recounted stories for a son take the reader on a journey through the experiences of the urban population of Appalachia. No hogs butchered in the backyard, or outhouses to contend with; none of the stereotypes typically assumed of the Appalachian American. Sometimes humorous, occasionally poignant, and always on point, Letters to My Son - Reflections of Urban Appalachia at Mid-Century is a fascinating glimpse into perhaps the most mislabeled population in America.

By Amazon Customer I was lucky enough to grow up in the same town as the author, by all accounts her book is very "StAlbans", middle class working families, small town feel, not a lot of excitement other than football games on Saturday afternoon, Pizza Hut or BBF afterwards, one of three grocery stores to go shopping with mom... Ok, so we won't talk about the bar across the street from the junior high where we used to sneak at lunch to buy a pop and junk food instead of buying lunch in the school cafeteria or trying to hitch hike but getting caught by her mom.... Great book with heart warming stories full of good memories for any baby-boomer - anywhere - and especially for those who think people in Appalachia are backwoods hicks who inter-marry, spend all their time out hunting/shooting whatever moves or have a still in their backyard - pick up a copy, put your feet up and walk down memory lane with Lynne
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable! By Teri Chamberlain Loved this book! Great afternoon read. It was interesting to read that she and I had similar, yet different upbringings; toys, childhood activities, experiences. Her heartfelt thoughts about Urban Appalachia resonate in each chapter; along with her humor and sarcasm. You will see another side of Appalachia. A worthwhile read.
