Preface Most of the lyrics of love and life, the translations of which from Bengali are published in this book, were written much earlier than the series of religious poems contained in the book named Gitanjali. The translations are not always literal—the originals being sometimes abridged and sometimes paraphrased. Rabindranath Tagore.

He calls himself a servant and his beloved the queen. He dreams to serve her idle days. He wants to keep fresh the grassy path where she walks in the morning; he wants her feet to be greeted with praise at every step by the flowers. And what he wants for his reward? He asks to be allowed to hold her little fists like tender lotus-buds and slip flower chains over her wrists; to tinge the soles of her feet with the red juice of flower petals and kiss away the speck of dust that may chance to linger there. This is the way Rabindranath Tagore, the greatest Indian poet of all times, introduce us to this enchanted collection of poems, poems that touch the most profound strings of our hearts. His poems tell us about love and life - and they are rich with the description of nature and beauty. Anybody that loves or has loved cannot remain indifferent to his poems. Some readers "have smiles, sweet and simple, and some a sly twinkle in their eyes. Some have tears that well up in the daylight, and others tears that are hidden in the gloom." But we all have need for him, the poet, who is "ever as young or as old as the youngest and the oldest of the village".His poems tell us of impossible love - like the love of the free bird and the cage bird: "Their love is intense with longing, but they never can fly wing to wing. Through the bars of the cage they look, and vain is their wish to know each other. They flutter their wings in yearning, and sing, 'Come closer, my love!' The free bird cries, 'It cannot be, I fear the closed doors of the cage.' The cage bird whispers, 'Alas, my wings are powerless and dead.' "His poems tell us of secret love: "The young traveler came along the road in the rosy mist of the morning. He stopped before my door and asked me with an eager cry, 'Where is she?' For very shame I could not say, 'She is I, young traveler, she is I.' "His poems tell us of lovers' emotion: "When my love comes and sits by my side, when my body trembles and my eyelids droop, the night darkens, the wind blows out the lamp, and the clouds draw veils over the stars. It is the jewel at my own breast that shines and gives light. I do not know how to hide it."His poems tell us of the need for love confidence: "Do not keep to yourself the secret of your heart, my friend! Say it to me, only to me, in secret. You who smile so gently, softly whisper, my heart will hear it, not my ears."His poems tell us of a love story: "Hands cling to hands and eyes linger on eyes: thus begins the record of our hearts. It is the moonlit night of March; the sweet smell of henna is in the air; my flute lies on the earth neglected and your garland of flowers is unfinished. This love between you and me is simple as a song."His poems tell us of lovers departing: "An unbelieving smile flits on your eyes when I come to you to take my leave. I have done it so often that you think I will soon return. To tell you the truth I have the same doubt in my mind. For the spring days come again time after time; the full moon takes leave and comes on another visit, the flowers come again and blush upon their branches year after year, and it is likely that I take my leave only to come to you again. But keep the illusion awhile; do not send it away with ungentle haste. When I say I leave you for all time, accept it as true, and let a mist of tears for one moment deepen the dark rim of your eyes. Then smile as archly as you like when I come again."Reading those poems I felt like visiting a flower garden full of scents and beauty in a magic ancient kingdom.

I stumbled upon a first edition in my university's library, dusty from years of sitting unread (so sad). I read the first several pages, began to swoon, and had to sit down right there to read more. This is a book to read to your lover before making love. A book to woo her heart with!!! Highly recommended for the romantically hearted.

It is worth reading in early morning when one is alone without a disturbance by anybody. I have reserved this book for reading in such occasions. Last I read it, in a garden on week end walk. I am resume it again on next such opportunity.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Private Soldier Under Washington By Eric Williams The Private Soldier Under Washington. Charles K. Bolton. 1902. 258 pages.I found this book in the library catalog and requested it. It took about two weeks to arrive, as they had to dig it out of the storage stacks. The copy the library has is the original first edition from 1902, though it was rebound in 1986. The pages are quite brittle. But there is something very pleasing about an old book; the way it smells, the way the paper feels ....The book in terms of the genre of history is a bit out of time. It predates the social history era of the 1960's and beyond by over half a century, and yet it stacks up very well to the more modern accounts. The prose was period and therefore more inclined to the poetic at times then the drier stuff of modern writing. I appreciated this as it made the tale the author spun weave and dance across the pages and through my thoughts much more then just a simple data download. The books goal is to relate the reader what it was like to serve as a private soldier, a man in the ranks, in the Continental Army of 1775-1783. It does this by relying on a few well chosen primary sources. His sources tend towards individual diaries and letters notably George Washington himself and about ten or so other diarists. He choose, interestingly, a majority of his sources from the diaries of Continental Army Chaplains. This was not done for any religious reason or to grind out an agenda, merely I think because the chaplains tended to be better educated, trained observes of people and the men felt freer to talk with them then their own commanders which puts the chaplain then, as now, in a unique position to observe and comment on soldier motivation and attitudes. He does a very good job of covering the mundane and the grand. Everything from uniforms, weapons, and training to the horror of the medical care and prison ships. He does not merely cover the main Army with Washington either. He makes extensive use of a Chaplain's diary who was assigned to the Sullivan Campaign of 1779.All told this is a very good book in terms of its research and prose. It pre-dates the Marxist influence you find in later books of this type and instead primarily lets the soldiers speak for themselves. The Author does not seem to be trying to push and agenda, and this is like a breath of fresh air.

It is well done and would start as a good opening book for those who are interested in our Country's war.

So, don't worry about spoilers....I've always maintained a coldly mechanical willingness to stop reading a book whenever the time comes....in St. Ives, the time comes at Chapter XXXI.Stevenson died after writing XXX chapters of St. Ives, and a respected contemporary, Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, wrote the remaining VI chapters from Stevenson's notes.Stevenson's oeuvre is fastidiously lush, precise, sophisticated, with deeply contextual character development and dialogue that leaves me breathless with anticipation for more. There's an abstractly beautiful love interest. Did I mention that I'm a fan of 19th century prose?Quiller-Couch doubtless had his merits as a 19th century writer. He ain't no Stevenson.Q-C's contribution to St. Ives lacks the prepossessing heartiness of Stevenson's dialogue and storyline.Q-C can't quite gin up the panache and persiflage that RLS animates on nearly every page.Q-C makes a too sincere but unavailing effort to match the rural patois that Stevenson offers for the reader's delight.Q-C bungles the parlous adventures of the eponymous protagonist, injecting a wretched slapstick element that leads an RLS fan to transition uncomfortably into pursed-lips mode.Stevenson's prosaic mastery is, sadly, missing in the last VI chapters of St. Ives, and, therefore, ignorance shall be my penalty for closing this truncated masterpiece before I reached the end.Read more on my blog: Barley Literate

By George R Peabody Very disappointed that the final chapter of the book seemed to be missing leaving the reader to wonder how the story of St. Ives ended. Great adventure story up until then. Research found that it was completed by another lesser known author.

Foreign correspondent Lola Wicks is livid. She's been downsized from her Kabul posting. Her editor reassigns her to a stateside suburban beat formerly the province of interns. When she arrives in Montana for some R&R at a friend's cabin, her friend is nowhere in sight.Anger turns to terror when Lola discovers her friend shot dead. She can't get out of Montana fast enough, until she finds that she can't get out at all. She's held as a potential witness, thwarting her plan to return on her own to Afghanistan to write the stories she's sure will persuade her editors to change their minds. Her best hope lies in solving the case herself. But the surefooted journalist who deftly negotiated Afghanistan's deadly terrain finds herself frighteningly off-balance in this forgotten corner of her own country, plagued by tensions between the locals and citizens of the nearby Blackfeet Nation.Lola's lone-wolf style doesn't work in a place where the harsh landscape and extreme isolation compel people to rely upon each other in ways she finds unsettling. In her awkward attempts at connection, by turns touching and humorous, Lola forms a reluctant alliance with a local reporter, succumbs to the romantic attentions of a wealthy rancher, and fences warily with the state's first Indian candidate for governor, the subject of her friend's final stories.Initially pretending interest to glean information, Lola comes to truly care about the people she meets in Montana, only to miss the warning signals that her own life is in danger.Even as she unravels her friend's terrible fate, Lola Wicks joins many Americans in learning the hard lessons of a fraught economy - that circumstances change in a flash, that formerly overlooked places and people can hold deep value, and that in the end human bonds matter so much more than fleeting career success.

From Booklist Returning from assignment in Afghanistan, foreign correspondent Lola Wicks is looking forward to a restful reentry at a friend’s Montana cabin. Instead, she’s greeted by her former colleague’s corpse. Lola learns that Mary Alice had been writing for the local paper, digging into the past of Native American gubernatorial candidate Johnny Running Wolf. Lola doesn’t trust that the local sheriff has the skills to find Mary Alice’s killer, so she extends her stay and uses her investigative expertise to reconstruct Mary Alice’s last days. She learns that there’s a lot more than meets the eye going on in Magpie, Montana. Beyond the unemployment and the anti-meth billboards, there’s big money to be made in the mountains—enough to kill for. The sparsely populated Big Sky setting will be one of the major sources of appeal for readers of this gripping debut mystery. --Karen Keefe

Review "Outstanding...Quirky and cantankerous, Lola is grudgingly willing to learn from experience. Believable action complements razor-sharp observations of people and scenery."--Publishers Weekly, starred review"Crammed with atmosphere and intriguing characters...Florio dips into her own background to make the protagonist competent and believable...The author does a great job of writing a book that's both evocative of the Montana countryside and a satisfying, hair-raising ride. A promising debut." --Kirkus Reviews"In Gwen Florio's entertaining debut, war correspondent Lola Wicks finds the greatest threat to her safety is not dodging bullets in Afghanistan but discovering who killed her friend and fellow correspondent in Magpie, Montana. Florio knows her territory. She gives us wind on the high plains and the soft and velvety nose of a horse hungry for sugar. There's fire in the hills, trouble in the governor's race, and a county awash in drugs. Magpie's the old West with daunting new problems, and the scrappy Lola Wicks takes them on."--Leonard Rosen, author of All Cry Chaos"Lola is a layered and complex character -- smart, resourceful, and driven, a woman coming to a deeper understanding of how war and ambition have both damaged her and made her stronger...With a deft hand and rich, evocative descriptions of the Montana landscape, Florio weaves an intricate mystery with subtlety and finesse." --Jaden Terrell, author of Racing the Devil"Drawing on her experiences covering everything from the killing fields of Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia to home-grown American evil, Gwen Florio concocts a riveting tale of murder, hard times in a hard place, and the value of human bonds."--Howard Owen, Hammett Prize winning author of Oregon Hill"In her first novel, Gwen Florio demonstrates she's a good storyteller, but it's the irreverent, often cantankerous, indomitable protagonist Lola Wicks who will keep the reader turning pages to reach the exciting conclusion." ----Connie Dial, author of Dead Wrong

About the Author Gwen Florio's (Missoula, MT) first novel, MONTANA, won the inaugural Pinckley Prize for debut novel, and a High Plains Book Award, and was a finalist for an International Thriller Award, Shamus Award and Silver Falchion Award. Her second in the Lola Wicks series, DAKOTA, was a finalist for a Silver Falchion award. A veteran journalist, Florio's work was nominated three times for the Pulitzer Prize. She is a member of International Thriller Writers, Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers, and Women Writing the West.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. entertaining tale By MTnative I liked the articles Gwen Florio wrote when she was a reporter for the Missoulian so I was curious about her book when I heard she had written one. I have spent some time along the Rocky Mountain Front so I have a town picked out for the book's setting and can easily picture the reservation and other locales featured in the book. I think the author did her homework as she captures the essence of eastern Montana and the local citizens quite well. This was a pretty decent mystery and the author has left the door open for more books utilizing the same characters. Is this the best mystery I have ever read? Probably not. But it is better than a lot of them and I expect the next one to be even better.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Montana Mystique By Sandy Oitzinger Missoulian Gwen Florio’s book, Montana, does justice to the State so named, AND to the salt-of-the-earth folks who populate it. This absorbing thriller will be a favorite of strong women and those who love them. With its animated pace and exquisitely drawn characters, it’s no wonder that Gwen was recently awarded second place in the Missoula Independent's Best of Missoula Best Writer category, second only to the wildly successful author paving the way for her, James Lee Burke, also of Missoula.Gwen’s protagonist is a journalist and one assumes that the author’s experience in this field informs her work, but Lola Wicks, the leading character, is more than just her job, bringing grit, intelligence and a damn fine pitching arm to the mix. Citizens of the “global village” will want to READ Montana, even if they never get to visit us in Florio’s home state. As a journalist, Gwen Florio was nominated by the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Denver Post and the Missoulian for the Pulitzer Prize. Her short fiction has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. This rising Montana author brings this same excellence, attention to detail and perspicuity to her dynamic novels.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Kept me reading all night By David C. Hackney It is a cliche, of course, but Ms. Florio's novel did keep me up most of the night. I started reading Christmas night. Read until about 2 AM. Resumed while eating breakfast and finished while having lunch. Ms. Florio is an experienced newspaper reporter who has covered many high profile stories including the Columbine High School shootings and Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. She brings that experience to her novel with characters that are fully developed and highly believable. The basis of the novel is the investigation by Lisa Wicks, a Baltimore reporter covering the war in Afghanistan, into the murder of her friend, Mary Alice Carr. Ms. Wicks has been pulled out of the war by her editors and brought back to Baltimore to cover the suburbs, a beat usually given to interns. But her paper, like papers everywhere, is cutting costs so there are no more interns and few reporters. Deciding to take some time off, she travels to Montana to visit her old friend and former colleague, Mary Alice. When she finds her friend murdered near her secluded cabin she is determined to find the killer. I thought I knew who had killed Mary Alice about half way through, but was I ever wrong. Ms. Florio kept me guessing right up to the end. I highly recommend this book. I also eagerly await Ms. Florio's next novel.

What and who he was attend a while, and you shall understand that it was even I, the writer of mine own Metamorphosie and strange alteration of figure. Hymettus, Athens, Isthmia, Ephire Tenaros, and Sparta, being fat and fertile soiles (as I pray you give credit to the bookes of more everlasting fame) be places where myne antient progeny and linage did sometime flourish: there I say, in Athens, when I was yong, I went first to schoole. Soone after (as a stranger) I arrived at Rome, whereas by great industry, and without instruction of any schoolmaster, I attained to the full perfection of the Latine tongue. Behold, I first crave and beg your pardon, lest I should happen to displease or offend any of you by the rude and rusticke utterance of this strange and forrein language. And verily this new alteration of speech doth correspond to the enterprised matter whereof I purpose to entreat, I will set forth unto you a pleasant Grecian feast. Whereunto gentle Reader if thou wilt give attendant eare, it will minister unto thee such delectable matter as thou shalt be contented withall.

The anecdotes are pretty crazy, but because of that they stand out and remain in your mind for a while. It's not that there are spelling "mistakes", but this is an older translation, so sometimes strange words are used (like in one of my favorite lines: "the Moone to purge his skimme upon herbes and trees to serve for sorceries"; skimme being sperm? I think...) or spelled differently. Anyway, it seems intelligible enough, and a worthwhile read. :)

14 of 19 people found the following review helpful. not a good version By H. Wang dont buy it, they converted from PDF to text file, and did not correct mistakes made by machines. You will never understand this story if you read this version.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good Book By History Lover It has the original novel in full and in text only format, which is fine as the original was text only. Worth downloading if you want to read it, but you may want to instead purchase/download one of the "The Complete Works of..." type collections, if one exists for Lucius Apuleius. Perhaps a collection of classic works…? They usually are less than $5.00 in digital format, especially for older novels/stories that are now in the public domain. An annotated version of this book would also be a much better choice for most readers as having been written 1,000's of years ago it can be rather difficult to follow at times.

By LupusAdventurer I have a copy of this book that I read from my mother's home library as a child. The volume I have as part of my father's estate was published on or before 1894, and has a pen and ink inscription signature of the original owner, "Adelaide S. Martin, Lucerne, Switzerland 1984" on the fly leaf. This volume is 214 pages, plus several pages of The Scott Library ads in the last half of the last signature. This has "ragged" untrimmed uneven page edges and is complete in original printing. I can supply a photo of the book, bound in green book cloth with gilded decoration and spine/cover labels.

Actually, more like a 4.5 for me. Some people may have a hard time with it though. Either you know your periodic table and all the history connected to it and the elements or you like to read with an encyclopedia (or wikipedia) to hand. I belong to the latter. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Goal In Life Is To Unite The Conscious Mind With The Soul By seedstar7 Most people I know have never heard of Andrew Jackson Davis. If I mention his name they think I am referring to President Andrew Jackson or maybe one of Jefferson Davis' relatives.I only came upon his name while researching the question of whether Abraham Lincoln was interested in Spiritualism. I found a reference that Abraham Lincoln met and received council from Andrew Jackson Davis. So, I decided to buy this Autobiography to learn more about him and research this connection. And here in front of me was the philosophy and spirituality this fantastic man wrote for those who have ears to hear. This book truly has deep meaning for people all over the world today, searching and experiencing spirituality in a deep level. What is so fascinating about Davis is the way he obtained this higher knowledge. He claimed to be able to enter into a higher consciousness, or dimension (he calls it a higher sphere), and observe the world and the universe with a higher awareness. At the time he received this gift, he was about 17 years old and fairly uneducated. Up to this time he only had five months of education and never read more than just a few books. My purpose in writing this review is to introduce you to the life and writings of Andrew Jackson Davis and encourage you to read, starting with this autobiography, then his works.I had spent much time researching about his life and works since I bought this book. It seems very probable that Lincoln did know and consult with Andrew Jackson Davis since Davis was also considered the most famous spiritualist at that time.If you'd like to know more about the First American Prophet and Clairvoyant, aka, "Poughkeepsie Seer" by the press, I totally recommend to read his own autobiography, The Magic Staff.

We thought it was well written by each individual. This book for me, is about FINDING HOPE in ALL challenging CIRCUMSTANCES. I was able to relate to a handful of the stories, but the one that I connected with the most was Ana's story. I felt just reading her story alone, gave me tools to help make positive changes in my life, before finding myself in a deeper mess. It is almost like receiving advise from someone wiser, so you don't make the same mistake. It is a reminder to look to God in every area of your life, especially when you are suffering. God used their struggles for the greater good. Thank you ladies for sharing your deepest pain, you all helped me in so many different ways. God Bless you all!

At first I was going to just go to her chapter, but every book should be started at the beginning. As I read each chapter and prayed for each person that wrote it (these are real people and real journeys), many were intertwined with my own life story. God has done a great work in and through these women. Thank you ladies for being transparent to share.

Free Ebook Online Missing Person, by Patrick Modiano

In this strange, elegant novel, Patrick Modiano portrays a man in pursuit of the identity he lost in the murky days of the Paris Occupation, the black hole of French memory.

For 10 years Guy Roland has lived without a past. His current life and name were given to him by his recently retired boss, Hutte, who welcomed him, a one-time client, into his detective agency. Guy makes full use of Hutte's files - directories, yearbooks, and papers of all kinds going back half a century - but leads to his former life are few. Could he really be that person in a photograph, a young man remembered by some as a South American attache? Or was he someone else, perhaps the disappeared scion of a prominent local family? He interviews strangers and is tantalized by half clues until, at last, he grasps a thread that leads him through a maze of his own repressed experience.

On one level, Missing Person is a detective thriller, a 1950s film noir mix of smoky cafes, illegal passports, and insubstantial figures crossing bridges in the fog. On another level, it is also a haunting meditation on the nature of the self. Modiano's spare, hypnotic prose, superbly translated by Daniel Weissbort, draws listeners into the intoxication of a rare literary experience.

78 of 80 people found the following review helpful. The Work of a Master Storyteller By Claude Forthomme (Nougat) I read this book on my Kindle in the French version (French is my mother tongue) as I bought it for my 100 year old mother who still reads one novel a week on her Kindle. She wanted to read this book as soon as she heard he had won the Nobel, this is a book that came out in 1978, the year Patrick Modiano won the Goncourt, a prestigious French prize. Before bringing it over to her, I read it, immediately taken in by the opening lines, unable to put it down. As I am now writing this critique, I just learned from an article in the Washington Post, that "Missing Person" is the book Peter Englund, a historian and the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, recommends to readers unfamiliar with Patrick Modiano. “It’s a fun book,” Englund said. “He’s playing with the genre.” And the genre he is playing with is mysteries. A detective, suffering from amnesia, sets out to recover his identity, following a variety of strange leads.I'd like to recall here a very astute comment made sometime back by Anne Korkokeakivi, writing for THE MILLIONS, where she noted that French novels tend to be "... dark, searching, philosophical, autobiographical, self-reflective, and/or poetic (without being overwritten)."Patrick Modiano's "Missing Person" precisely fits this description. It is all these things, dark, searching, self-reflective and yes, poetic.Consider the first lines: "I am nothing. Nothing but a pale shape, silhouetted that evening against the café terrace, waiting for the rain to stop; the shower had started when Hutte left me."Amazing, isn't it? The opening sentence is just three words, but how they resound. I am nothing. That is of course the whole theme of the book. What comes next is a poetic evocation of someone barely there, uncertainly watching the rain. And the last part of the sentence immediately makes you want to know who is this Hutte - someone with a strange name if there ever was one.Yes, that is how a master storyteller starts a novel, and I guarantee that you will be turning the pages as fast as I did. And you will be wondering as the main character follows clues that turn out to be non-clues, and you will find yourself perplexed as he attempts to start conversations with people who take him for...who? Really him or someone else? This is done very subtly, especially at the level of dialogues, the kind one carries on with people one barely knows. But can one ever really know the other and oneself? So yes, the book is presented as a mystery, but the mystery is the main character...And bottom line, our own selves, each and everyone of us, how sure are you of who you really are...So how good is Patrick Modiano? Very good, five stars, I highly recommend it. And I think you'll be happily surprised what a short read it is too, featherweight, a little over 200 pages. A small perfection...

It's magnificent because of its vagueness. It's essential that the protagonist wander around in a daze to convey a Europe bereft of reference points, orientation and a sense of confident purpose."Mistah Kurz, he dead!" Conrad, Heart of Darkness."The empires of our time were shortlived, but they have altered the world forever. Their passing away is their least significant feature." Naipaul.Heaped upon this lost purpose is the contribution of a subsequent interventionist: "If we fail, we will drag half the world down with us into the same abyss." Hitler.MISSING PERSON illuminates European consciousness numbed and stupified by the fallout and consequences of these 3 historical developments. This novel is a masterpiece.

Secrets of a Past By Roger Brunyate "I am nothing"* -- the opening phrase of this 1978 novel which won the Prix Goncourt for Patrick Modiano, now the most recent winner of the Nobel Prize. The protagonist is a private detective named Guy Roland. Only this is merely the name given to him by Hutte, his former employer at the detective agency when he rescued him from total amnesia a dozen years before, and gave him a job. Now Hutte is retiring to Nice, leaving Guy with only one case to investigate: his own.Yes, it is a totally implausible concept, but Modiano is less interested in the mechanism of Guy's search for self than in what that search will reveal. The detective will follow a number of clues, each time finding somebody who will give him a tiny part of his story, but not the whole of it. The story is implausible too in that Guy gets almost none of the "Why bother me?" kinds of reaction that one might expect. Almost all his informants seem glad to talk with him; they invite him to their homes and give him boxes of souvenirs to go away with. This, even as Guy himself is having to pose as someone else to gain their confidence, trying on one possible role after another, as he gradually works out who he must be. And, as he does so, he begins to have flashes of memory of his own.Artificial though the mechanism may be, there is none of the surrealism that one associates with many mid-century French writers. Modiano copies the "policier" style perfectly; his noir settings and vivid dialogue could come from the pen of Simenon or any of his followers. "The lights in the bar dimmed, as they do in some dance-halls at the beginning of a slow fox."* There is a fascination with his journeys into various quarters of Paris to meet new informants: a cocktail pianist, a jockey, various Russian expatriates, others of mixed or uncertain nationality. Although the original French title, "Rue des Boutiques Obscures" ("Street of Shady Shops" perhaps?) turns out to have little to do with Paris, the roman-noir idea of secrets hiding behind closed doors is a powerful and compelling one. This is an easy book to read, and I soon found myself swept up in its momentum. Here is a longer example that captures both theme and atmosphere well:"In the lobbies of apartment buildings, I believe that you can still hear echoes of the footsteps of those who once crossed them but have now disappeared. Something continues to vibrate after their passing, sound waves getting weaker and weaker, but which you can still catch if you try. When it comes down to it, it may be that I never was this Pedro McEvoy, I never was anything; but the waves that passed by me, sometimes distant and sometimes closer, and all those echoes that hung in the air crystallized and that was me."*It is writing of this caliber that raises Modiano above the level of the normal detective novelist. But also the question of where the protagonist's inquiries will take him. I do not want to say too much, but it becomes clear that his story will come to a head during the period of German occupation. Modiano has said that many of his novels use memory to explore the experience of his father, who was Jewish but survived the occupation. That does not appear to be the specific theme here, although references to "those years of night" crop up increasingly among the protagonist's informants. Although the novel builds to a climax that manages to be exciting and desolate at the same time, there have been other authors since who have pulled the net tighter and painted in darker tones. In short, I see this as an approachable and meaningful introduction to the work of this latest Nobelist, though I suspect that the reason for his winning the Prize has more to do with the totality of his oeuvre than the quality of any one book. [4.5 stars]*Since I read the novel in French, all translations (however inadequate) are mine.

A raw, real, and funny mental health memoir written by a depression sufferer who has overcome her illness What would happen if a clinically depressed person embarked on a quest to not only overcome her condition, but discover the key to sustained happiness? Lana Penrose did just that. After going through a divorce and moving countries three times, Lana returned home to Australia and buckled like a soldier on a battlefield. The black dog bit, and it bit hard. Lana was diagnosed with major depression. Finding herself at a desperate crossroads, she took a sharp left and chose to fight for her happiness, star-rating her experiences along the way. This book covers what the journey of tackling depression is really like. Using herself as a human guinea pig, Lana tries almost every conceivable therapy: CBT, schema psychology, EMDR, acupuncture, meditation, medication, mindfulness, naturopathy, compassion, forgiveness, NLP, EFT, kinesiology, gratitude, visualization, and shamanism. If it was legal, Lana tried it, including pit-stopping for a fireside chat with a close associate of the Dalai Lama. Unbelievably, it worked, and the results were beyond even Lana’s wildest imaginings. Open, warm, and wise, The Happiness Quest is for all depression sufferers and happiness seekers alike.

Her books are exquisite narratives that can make you snot cry one minute and snot laugh the next. Her books are about her own life and she lets you in on her journeys. Every time I finish a book of Lana's I feel like she wrote it just for me, every single one. This book is for anyone who has ever been asked, "Are you okay," on Are You Okay Day, said yes and lied (self included). It's for anyone who feels there's no-one who understands what they're going through because it feels like she's grabbed your hand through the tears, the triumphs and everything in between. And it's for anyone who, despite all of the above, wants to partake of rib-breaking, hysterical laughter and thus give a metaphorical middle finger to the black dog.The Happiness Quest is the book you've been waiting to read all your life but didn't even know it. By the end of page one you will want to be Lana's best friend forever. By the end of the last page you will feel like she really is.

By sueannm66 Lana writes honestly about her personal and painful experience of depression and her determined and sometimes unconventional quest for happiness. She candidly writes about her condition and is wittily self-depracating as she experiments with both conventional and unconventional treatments for depression ranging from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to shamanism. This book helps lift the lid off mental illness which is so prevalent and yet still so stigmatised in society. It is worthwhile reading for both sufferers of depression and non-sufferers as it provides the reader with an rare insight into what life for a person with depression can be like. Ultimately the book offers something many of us can and will appreciate - a message of hope.

She takes us on her difficult journey, and her writing will help those who are navigating a similar path. Lana's book is personable, funny and honest... and its unusual to find such material written in such a compelling yet digestible and hopeful way. Really enjoyed this book, it may even bring about some change in my own world....

Biographer Legouis' interpretation of the English poet's relationship with a young French woman is certainly the most influential, and almost the only, source of verifiable historical information about Annette Vallon, English poet William's Wordsworth's first muse. Only a few documented facts are known about the real woman Marie Anne Vallon (1766-1841), called Annette. Her very existence was suppressed, and most of the evidence destroyed, by the English Wordsworth family well before the 20th century. Legouis performed real historical service to posterity by tracking down the facts of her life in every document he could locate in England or France. His reports and reproductions in this treatise, of the verifiable facts, are scholarly and precise. They remain available unmarred, for the careful reader, by his various biases in interpretation. But interested readers should be on guard for the many biases here -- Legouis' personal literary interpretations of the Wordsworth poetry; the biases of English culture about French culture; and the biases of a man writing about a woman in 1922. Novelist James Tipton (Annette Vallon: A Novel of the French Revolution, Harper 2007) used Legouis as his primary historical source. Tipton offers a more subtle, layered and entertaining interpretation of the relationship between Wordsworth and Vallon for the casual reader.(See my fuller discussion of both books at [...] publication date June 1, 2014).
