3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Lovely Classic By A Customer A horseman gallops out across a windswept moor, unworried by the oncoming dark. He is a highwayman: one of that rare breed of thieves and gentlemen. The hills are his home, and the horse his only companion. Who could fail with a story like that? Baroness Orczy knew how to spin a tale, as shown in the "Scarlet Pimpernel" series. The story line moves with speed and excitement, and is carried brilliantly to the end. The almost tragic novel of an outlaw and his lady overflows with color. Orczy sketched a rosy English landscape and filled it with a tale well told. This novel may be rare, but once found it is a story that won't be forgotten.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. not bad By A. mancebo well, if you are a die hard pimpernel fan then you will like this book. if you only thought that it was so/so then you probably wont like this book much better. it's not as good as the scarlet pimpernel, which might be why it has been out of print.it is about a wealthy, beautiful lady who must bring some letters to London to clear her brother of treason. a jealous, cruel lord is intent on marring her and securing her fortune. he needs the letters as ransom so that she will accept his otherwise offensive suit. on the way to London she is robbed of the letters. the Highway man Beau Brocade, who has fallen head over heals in love with the beautiful woman, swears to retrieve the letters and the adventure is off! the lord has the letters, then the shepherd has the letters, then the lady has the letters, then the letters are missing, and how does it end? like robin hood.the biggest problem with the story was that it was too chased. the lovers hardly do more than touch hands until near the end when he kisses her and she faints with the pleasure of it. it supports the notion that to die for a single look from a supremely beautiful woman is the most honorable thing that can be done. and that beauty, chastity and a love are the only things that a worthy woman should have.
