It is not technical--so don't let the words "Architectural History" in the title scare you away. It is well written history and takes you on a tour of the sites of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection as they are located in this historic church. You might have other books on this subject---but this one contains details that will definitely set it apart. It is "coffee table size" with excellent photography and text.

The pages are all a very poor facsimile of the original book. I had to read the footnotes with a magnifying glass. The binding was of a poor quality but the book held up after one read. The content was exactly what I was looking for except that the church floor plans were missing. The author refers to the floor plans constantly throughout the book. I was able to locate them at the Amazon website under the paperback version “look inside”.The Church of the Holy Sepulcher was completely destroyed twice. There are four periods that the author very clearly walks you thru; In 335 AD, the Emperor Constantine built the first basilica, Persia destroyed it completely in 614 AD; Modestus of the Monastary Theodosius restored the Church, Caliph Hakem destroyed this version of the Church in 1010 AD, Four successive Byzantine Emperors restored the church; Most of the church burns down in 1808 due to a fire and is restored for the last time. The text and the plans clearly show all the changes made in plans that are hopefully included in the paperback version.Given the above breakdown it is very easy to follow how the holy sepulcher and Calvary were transferred to each to the new church configurations. However, what are missing are the details on how Helena, the Emperor Constantine’s mother, knew where to find the two holy spots in Jerusalem. The Emperor Hadrian in around 130 AD constructed the Temple of Venus at the site. Constantine’s mother Helena removed massive amounts of earth to reach the holy sepulcher and Calvary. How did she know these holy sites were there?
