Born into an upper-class New York family, Edith Wharton broke with convention and became a professional writer, earning an enduring place as the grande dame of American letters. This Library of America collection (along with its companion volume, Collected Stories: 1911–1937) presents the finest of Wharton's achievement in short fiction, drawn from the more than eighty stories she published over the course of her career. Opening with her first published story—the charming "Mrs. Manstey's View," about a disruption in the life of an elderly apartment-dweller—this first of two volumes presents a writer, already at the height of her powers, beginning to explore the concerns of a lifetime. In "Souls Belated," two lovers attempt to escape the consequences of their adultery—a subject to which Wharton returns throughout her career. In "The Mission of Jane" (about a remarkable adopted child) and "The Pelican" (about an itinerant lecturer), she discovers her gift for social and cultural satire. Perhaps the finest of her ghost stories, "The Eyes," with its Jamesian sense of evil, is also included, along with two novella-length works, "The Touchstone" and "Sanctuary," revealing the dazzling range of Wharton's fictive imagination. Also included in this edition are a chronology of Wharton's life, explanatory notes, and an essay on the texts. From the Hardcover edition.

Edith Wharton: Collected Stories Vol. 1 1891-1910 (Library of America), by Edith Wharton

From Library Journal Arguably our greatest novelist of manners, Wharton (The House of Mirth) evoked the glittering heights and the decadent lows of New York society at the turn of the 20th century. However, it was with her short stories and her novellas that the author honed her technique and her sharp social satire. These two volumes offer a glimpse into Wharton's development as a writer and provide perfect companions to the Library of America's Edith Wharton: Novels (1986) and Edith Wharton: Novellas and Other Writings (1989). Volume 1 opens with her first published story, "Mrs. Manstey's View," and contains the novellas "The Touchstone" and "Sanctuary." These early stories include Wharton's characteristic social satire and her keen insights into sexual relationships. Volume 2 features the novellas "Roman Fever" and "Bunner Sisters," as well as several of her stories about World War I, including "The Marne" and "Writing a War Story." These stories capture Wharton's mastery at characterization and the maturity of her reflections on society. Novelist Howard (Grace Abounding) selected the contents and wrote the notes for each volume. These elegant editions provide a convenient collection of Wharton's stories. An essential purchase. Henry L. Carrigan Jr., Lancaster, PA Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Publisher Edith Wharton's full and glamorous life bridged two continents and two centuries. Born into an upper-class New York family, she broke with convention and became a professional writer, earning an enduring place as the grande dame of American letters.

This collection presents the finest of Wharton's achievement in short fiction, drawn from the more than eighty stories she published over the course of her career. Here, in settings familiar and exotic, are all of Wharton's characteristic qualities and themes: her candid exploration of relations between the sexes; her satire, sometimes gentle, sometimes despairing, of social class and its distinctions; her keen-eyed observation of the minutiae of character; her unflinching recognition of the power of conventional morality and the limits of passion, tempered by her delightful sense of play.

Opening with her first published story--the charming "Mrs. Manstey's View," about a disruption in the life of an elderly apartment-dweller--this first of two volumes presents a writer, already at the height of her powers, beginning to explore the concerns of a lifetime. In "Souls Belated," two lovers attempt to escape the consequences of their adultery--a subject to which Wharton returns throughout her career.

Zak Wharton is both under- and over-rated and consistently misinterpreted as a sort of minor Henry James. Best known now for two or three novels set in Edwardian New York, she is a master of the short story. Many of those anthologized in this volume are gems, including some of the best ghost stories ever written by an American: The Lady's Maid's Bell, The Eyes, and Afterward. The real surprise is Wharton's devastating humor, often quite cynical, cropping out in comments embedded throughout the writing, and sometimes in entire stories, such as The Mission of Jane (which you won't find in standard anthologies). The writing is superb.

"I can tell you exactly the day it all went wrong—the day my mum attacked my dad with a kitchen knife. In those few, short seconds, a black hole opened up in my life and I fell right in." Tina McGuff’s life was perfect – or so she thought. Living in Dundee with her devoted parents and three younger sisters, she was a happy, healthy, and confident 13-year-old. But all that changed in one horrifying act of revenge, and Tina’s world collapsed overnight. Terrified, lost, and confused, she turned to the one thing she thought she could control—food. And so began the biggest fight of her life. Tina’s life-or-death struggle with anorexia is told with devastating honesty in this extraordinary account of a girl at war with herself. It took Tina seconds to snap and a lifetime to recover—but today, as a passionate campaigner for mental health, she is living proof that there is always a reason to hope that one day, things will get better.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Overcoming a Life of Adversity By Steven M. Anthony In the interest of full disclosure, I should relate that I am an internet acquaintance of the author, having met her through a travel website. She is a resident of Dundee and I have traveled to nearby St. Andrews. Since taking a golf trip a few years ago, I have maintained contact and conversed from time to time, well before publication of the subject book.It is absolutely stunning to me that the “squared away” person I know is the same person whose struggles are detailed in this first horrifying and then uplifting and inspirational account of her descent into anorexia. Depression and eating disorders are so far outside my frame of reference that it is difficult to speak on the subject. For me, Tina’s book puts a human face on this far too common debilitating disease. It highlights the effect of the disease on the loved ones of the sufferer. Unfortunately, anorexia is only a part of the struggles faced by Tina, first as a teenager and then a young adult. The events that triggered her eating disorder, the breakup of her family and descent into poverty, a nervous breakdown and the death of her beloved father only add to the list of obstacles she has faced to date. It is heartbreaking.Luckily, Tina was able to overcome these obstacles and lead not just a normal life, but a very successful one as a wife and mother. Her story should be an inspiration not only to those suffering from similar illnesses, but to their families, many of whom have likely lost hope that recovery is a possibility. In my case, it has brought to light how fortunate I have been not having faced even a tiny fraction of the adversity overcome by Tina.Tina is Scottish and she speaks with the colloquial terms of her native land. She also speaks of weight using stones (one stone=14 pounds), so some of the writing might not be familiar to an American audience, though if anything, it adds charm. The feelings expressed and the pain suffered, however, is universal.

Everyone needs to raise their awareness about mental illnesses so that the stigma can be overcome. This book can help us do that. Without it we are likely to have to learn about it in a much harder way, either through personal experience or the experience of loved ones and friends who deal with it. Besides the importance of the message Tina's story gives to us, it is a fantastic read. I read it in one day as I was so engulfed in it I couldn't put it down. Thanks Tina for sharing your amazing story with us.

Resiliency of the Human Spirit By Tina Klaus This booked touched me deeply because of the honesty and authenticity in which Tina McGuff tells her story of trauma and the insidious grip that an eating disorder takes on, as it devours a persons life one day at a time. As someone who has suffered and struggled with an eating disorder the only way out is to face your demons and to feel the pain of your own life. This book captures this beautifully as it takes you along as one woman faces her traumatic, painful and healing journey head on. As a result, she shows everyone how resilient and bountiful the human spirit can be as it’s brought to its knees time and time again but in the end it’s possible to repair and put yourself back together to become whole again. And in her bravery to tell and share her story it gives everyone the permission to step into his or her own.

The Iliad (sometimes referred to as the Song of Ilion or Song of Ilium) is an ancient Greek epic poem in dactylic hexameter, traditionally attributed to the poet Homer. Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Greek states, it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. The Iliad was a standard work of great importance already in Classical Greece and remained so throughout the Hellenistic and Byzantine periods. It made its return to Italy and Western Europe beginning in the 15th century, primarily through translations into Latin and the vernacular languages. This collection includes three different translations of the Iliad into English. Edward Smith-Stanley (Earl of Derby)’s translation is close to the original Greek and has been hailed as “superior to any that has yet been attempted in the blank verse”. Alexander Pope’s translation makes use of heroic couplets (poems constructed from a sequence of rhyming pairs of lines in iambic pentameter) and was praised as "a performance which no age or nation could hope to equal". But also criticized for it’s poetic liberties with the original Greek. Samuel Butler’s translation reshapes the original poem into prose. The prose translation sidesteps many of the problems encountered by translators trying to conform the archaic Greek meter to English and provides a highly readable text. The prose translation, however, loses any sense of the original’s oral poetry.

The Iliad: Titan Classics (Illustrated), by Homer

Language Notes Text: English (translation) Original Language: Greek

About the Author Alexander Pope (21 May 1688 – 30 May 1744) was an 18th-century English poet, best known for his satirical verse and for his translation of Homer's Iliad (ISBN 9781480048348) and Odyssey (ISBN 9781490516424). Famous for his use of the heroic couplet, he is the third-most frequently quoted writer in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, after Shakespeare and Tennyson. Pope had been fascinated by Homer since childhood. In 1713, he announced his plans to publish a translation of the Iliad. The work would be available by subscription, with one volume appearing every year over the course of six years. Pope was 25 years old. He secured a revolutionary deal with the publisher Bernard Lintot, which brought him two hundred guineas (£210) a volume, equivalent to about £26,000 as of 2012, a vast sum at the time. Encouraged by the success of the Iliad, Pope translated the Odyssey. The translation appeared in 1726, but this time, confronted with the arduousness of the task, he enlisted the help of William Broome and Elijah Fenton. Pope attempted to conceal the extent of the collaboration (he himself translated only twelve books, Broome eight and Fenton four), but the secret leaked out. It did some damage to Pope's reputation for a time, but not to his profits. By the mid-18th century new fashions in poetry emerged. A decade after Pope's death, Joseph Warton claimed that Pope's style of poetry was not the most excellent form of the art. The Romantic movement that rose to prominence in early 19th-century England was more ambivalent towards his work. Though Lord Byron identified Pope as one of his chief influences (believing his scathing satire of contemporary English literature English Bards and Scotch Reviewers to be a continuance of Pope's tradition), William Wordsworth found Pope's style fundamentally too decadent a representation of the human condition. In the 20th century Pope's reputation was revived. Pope's work was found to be full of references to the people and places of his time, and these aided people's understanding of the past. The postwar period stressed the power of Pope's poetry, recognising that Pope's immersion in Christian and Biblical culture lent depth to his poetry. Maynard Mack thought highly of Pope's poetry, arguing that Pope's moral vision demanded as much respect as his technical excellence. In the years 1953–1967 the production of the definitive Twickenham edition of Pope's poems was published in ten volumes.

He notes, "You could not memorize Fagles, or Lattimore - or Hobbes, a few phrases apart - while Pope, even at his least Homeric, is memorable." Compare the following VERY BRIEF excerpts to see what I mean. Iliad xxii (483ff.)Robert Fagles:The day that orphans a youngster cuts him off from friends. And he hangs his head low, humiliated in every way. . . his cheeks streaked with tears.Alexander Pope:The Day, that to the Shades the Father sends,Robs the sad Orphan of his Father's Friends:He, wretched Outcast of Mankind! appearsFor ever sad, for ever bath'd in Tears;Pope clearly conveys the emotion better, and as a poet rather than an academic, he is probably closer to Homer's original, at least in style, than most. It is only too bad that this edition is not available in hardcover, since I would like it to grace my library wall for years to come. Also, I do not know how Penguin can justify such an exhorbitant price for a paperback edition. Perhaps because it is the only edition currently available by Pope.

109 of 117 people found the following review helpful. The Iliad of Homer, Translated by Alexander Pope By ingrid888 The two classic verse (English) translations of Homer's Iliad & Odyssey are by George Chapman (1611) and Alexander Pope (1725). A classic prose translation of both works is the one by Lang, Leaf, and Myers (Iliad), and Butcher, Lang (Odyssey). A good, literal prose translation from the 1890's of the Odyssey is the George Herbert Palmer. Good literal, modern prose translations of both works are the ones by A. T. Murray. The better prose and verse translations of the latter half of the 20th century (E. V. Rieu, Fagles, Lattimore, Fitzgerald, Lombardo, Mandelbaum, etc.) are all, though they obviously have different approaches, pretty much at the same level of inspiration. To get most of Homer in English you have to first learn the poems from ANY translation that speaks to you (even starting with a paraphrased prose version for 'children' is a good idea), then you have to read the Chapman and Pope along with a good, literal prose version. This Penquin Classics edition of Pope's translation of the Iliad includes all of Pope's notes for each book as-well-as his Preface, Essays on the nature of Homer's battle scenes and on the Shield of Achilles, and the three remarkable indexes (Index of Persons and Things, Poetical Index, and Index of Arts and Sciences). The notes contain, along with Pope's original notes, numerous extracts from ancient and modern commentators of the poem including the allegorizing of the various scenes and events and so on. Pope's verse itself makes Homer a startling new experience for anyone only familiar with 20th century translations. Because the verse is in heroic, rhymed couplets each detail of the poem stands more clearly on its own. Details that get blended in and painted over in modern translations stand out in Pope's verse. The verticalness of the poem (hierarchy of levels of being from beneath human to human to semi-divine to divine...) is made more visible. Architecture and natural description is more vivid. Pope also brings out the higher psychological play between the characters and gods and goddesses. This edition is definitely worth its price.

By A Customer I have been reading two translations of Homer's Iliad over the past several weeks: Robert Fagles' 1990 translation and Alexander Pope's 1743 translation. I have read the two translations in tandem, one "book" at a time. I first read Mr Fagle's translation, then the notes of Mr Pope, and finally his translation.I would call this one of the finest reading experiences of my life.I read both translations out-loud, or at least in a whisper. This winter-time reading experience has been, for me, a labor of love, a stimulating intellectual experience, a study in contrasts, and a return to the sources of Western Literature. I find Homer as fascinating as Alexander Pope claims him to be. Although his long narrative describes only a few days of the ten years war between Greece and Troy, he makes it interesting by his variety of metaphors, his close description of characters, and his attention to detail. Every man who dies is a person, with family, friends, history, and personality. Some are likeable, others are not; but in any case there are no ciphers in Homer's war. I am fascinated too by the developing theological issues of this six century BCE civilization. We might have to worship these meddlesome gods and their All-powerful Zeus, but do we always have to respect them? They seem to be all too human. In fact, the gods themselves seem to be trapped in an eternally frustrating struggle. Zeus is condemned to defend his sovereignty against a panoply of gods who must always resent his authority. Meanwhile, he is lonely, and he cannot stop himself from occasionally confiding in "that bitch" his sister and wife, Hera. She reminds me of a woman in a recent movie who said "Sometimes being a bitch is the only way a woman can save her self-respect." (Or something to that effect.) "Hera" represents that eternally angry woman who will not and cannot buckle under male domination. I find myself being grateful to this western tradition which has honored and preserved the memory of Homer and kept these ancient books in tact. I grieve at the thought of ancient celtic, african, and native american epics that have been lost or so badly mangled that they cannot be restored. I understand that there has been an enormous flurry of excitement over Mr Fagles' translation and I am certainly caught up in it as well. He tells these stories with excitement and conviction; they are as plausible and coherent today as they must have been to the privileged listeners who sat at the feet of Homer. But I am also grateful to Penguin Press who last year celebrated their 50th anniversary by republishing this magnificent translation by Alexander Pope. I only wish more of the reading public had heard about the celebration. I hate to admit that I was an indifferent student in college. I had other things on my mind. But now, in my middle years, I am glad to have the time and opportunity, to curl up with two great translations of Homer's Iliad on a winter's evening, to discover again the joy of reading superb English.

As a child, Orville G. Hiepler remembers his father’s laconic but eloquent response when asked, “How’s it going?” The answer never varied—he always replied, “It must go!” an affirmation that work, life, and the world must continue, no matter what.

Hiepler carried his father’s words and work ethic with him all his life, from his home on the windswept plains of North Dakota to seminary school and into his seventy-year ministry. His passion for saving souls, establishing new churches, and following through on project after project all came down to this simple expression: “It must go!”

A Prairie Farm Boy Looks over His Shoulder tells the story of Hiepler and how he progressed from a young boy in a one-room prairie schoolhouse to a dedicated Lutheran minister. His willingness to share his life with people no matter where he traveled, lived, or worked is a testament to the saving love of Christ that continues to guide Hiepler’s life.

Though a loving father and husband, Hiepler’s true identity is as a minister—and always will be. And while his story may be a look back, Hiepler continues to look forward, because “It must go!”

This is a story of two heroes who climbed different mountains and defined success in two startlingly different ways. It's the story of a brother who, at one point in time, was the world's best. And it's the story of a sister who wouldn't accept death as an alternative and found a quality of life through spiritual growth and a protocol of nontraditional cures. In No Stone Unturned, author Jessie Garcia shares the story of Casey FitzRandolph, who won an Olympic gold medal in speedskating in 2002 and his sister, Jessi, who was diagnosed eight years later with stage Iv breast cancer. The FitzRandolphs brought glory to the United States in the form of gold, yet left their home country in search of alternative medical treatments. Heart-wrenching and thought-provoking, No Stone Unturned follows the family through their journey. Told from the perspective of all involved, it offers insight into the heart of a modern American household dealing with two extreme emotions-elation and despair.

Immensely enjoyable for so many reasons By Erika This book has so much meaning, and the loss of a daughter/sister/dear friend/Aunt will never be forgotten. She's in our hearts constantly and we think about her everyday, whether it's a song, a memory, or just as simple as thinking about her, because she was such an important part of our lives. I read it in 2 days, and I found it enthralling and wanting to turn the page quicker than I could read. I found it to be so many things. It was informative, deeply sad, happy and motivational since it really grasped so many aspects of life. For those who have someone going through cancer it can be a huge learning experience to know that there are other alternatives out there other than the drastic Western medicine and treatments that are so harmful to our bodies. One can learn will learn so many things they can possibly do, and if I come upon anyone else in my lifetime who is seeking suggestions or other ideas to battle cancer, I will be the first to recommend this book so they can also learn they have options.

Even though I knew much of the story because I had been part of the FitzPack and the great chase to three Olympics and I knew of By Jon Cruzan I began reading No Stone Unturned on a Friday night and, literally, could not put it down until I completed it on Sunday. The writing and the story engaged me immediately. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and my entire being went out to the Fitz family. I found it haunting and thought provoking. Even though I knew much of the story because I had been part of the FitzPack and the great chase to three Olympics and I knew of the medical challenges this family faced, I was simply amazed at how author, Jessie Garcia, knitted this story together in this very powerful book. It captures the courage of this family to open themselves, their feelings, their private inner lives to public scrutiny. How brave! If you are chasing a dream, and/or your are facing mind-numbing medical challenges, then this book is for you. By reading about others you will most certainly get a glimpse of yourself.

I am left with awe and complete pride and respect for the triumphs and tragedy this family achieved and endured together. They truly left no stone unturned in searching for alternative treatments and protocols when conventional cancer treatments were no longer helping. It is a book that I believe will provide hope and the idea that there is more than one way to fight this bastard of a disease cancer. I sincerely hope it serves as a catalyst to open minds of all but especially those in the medical community in this country that maybe there are more things we can do or in conjunction with the standard protocols. Thank you for writing this book and sharing your story.

"In silence now, on bended knee, I offer up my sword. That you might hone and forge my heart, I sing my prayer to word."

And so begins “From the Back of a Thirsty Camel: Ecstatic Longings,” Brandon Thompson’s second book of ecstatic poetry. Far more than just a collection of poetry, “From the Back of a Thirsty Camel” is a penetrating exploration of writing as spiritual practice. In its pages, readers will find not only exquisite poems that glimmer with insight, but will also be invited on a journey: deeper into themselves, deeper into Spirit, and deeper into writing as a practice of Awakening.

What is ecstatic poetry? How can this mysterious form of writing once practiced by the contemplative Sufi Masters come into our lives and transform our hearts? In this book, Brandon Thompson endeavors to answer these questions and many more. He brings together a decades-long path of spiritual exploration, a harrowing personal journey from shadow into light, and a profound investigation into the nature of consciousness and its relationship to love, loss, and our place in the cosmos.

From its first page to its last, “From the Back of a Thirsty Camel: Ecstatic Longings” is a prayer to the power of words. It is an offering delivered on bended knee to all of those who sense that words can be a vessel for their longings and a vehicle towards deeper insight, wholeness, and transformation.

La Faute de l'abbé Mouret (French Edition), by Emile Zola

About the Author ?mile Zola was a French writer who is recognized as an exemplar of literary naturalism and for his contributions to the development of theatrical naturalism. Zola s best-known literary works include the twenty-volume Les Rougon-Macquart, an epic work that examined the influences of violence, alcohol and prostitution on French society through the experiences of two families, the Rougons and the Macquarts. Other remarkable works by Zola include Contes ? Ninon, Les Myst?res de Marseille, and Th?r?se Raquin.

In addition to his literary contributions, Zola played a key role in the Dreyfus Affair of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. His newspaper article J Accuse accused the highest levels of the French military and government of obstruction of justice and anti-semitism, for which he was convicted of libel in 1898. After a brief period of exile in England, Zola returned to France where he died in 1902. ?mile Zola is buried in the Panth?on alongside other esteemed literary figures Victor Hugo and Alexandre Dumas.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Paradise Lost By robinthemagpie For a supposedly 'realistic' author, Zola creates a world redolent with fantasy and symbolism. 'Creates' is the right word, because in contrast to some of the almost journalistic piling on of factual details in other books of the Rougon-Macquart series, this novel enacts the passions of love; the conflict between those passions and religious devotion (I disagree that Zola is here viciously anti-clerical, the balance of the novel would be destroyed if this were the case); the seething life of the Paradou, the fanatical cruelty of Brother Archangias, the simplicity and vitality of both Albine (echoes of the Albigensian heresy?) and Rosalie; the peasant earthiness and materiality of the Arnauds; even Zola's stock figure of the nagging servant is given life. But it's the second section in the Paradou and the fantasy of the church being overrun by nature in part three which raises this novel above many that Zola wrote. It prefigures D H Lawrence in its exploration of sexual attraction and the theme of love finding perfection in death reminds me of the contemporary 'Tristan und Isolde'.I am very pleased to discover such a novel after a lifetime of reading.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The tale of a clergyman who falls in love By Peter J Torvik Jr Zola paints a picture of obsessive religious fervor, followed by utopian love in a garden of Eden, and then the expulsion from the garden by a misogynistic avenging angel. The entire series to which this book belongs is a vast painting, from Zola's caustic point of view, of France in the latter half of the 19th century, and fascinating for that. Descriptions are vivid and detailed. Recommended.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Murder and War By C. Diligenti Pickup Philippe Claudel's book takes the reader back in time to World War 1 in the Lorraine region of France. Already crushed by the war, the little community of V. is even more shaken by a series of suicides that culminate with the murder of a little girl. Although set in France between 1914 and 1937 (time when the narrator relates his memories), the book is strangely universal: war happens anywhere at any time and is no more than legalized crime; crime also happens anywhere at any time and when it is a small child that is involved, it remains all the more horrific. The reader quickly forgets that it is World War I and can easily apply the events to contemporary times, contemporary facts of war. The author also manages to convey intensity through the rich use of the lexical fields of blood: war, murder, suicide, delivery hemorraghy, death, and the permanence of the gray that is part of the French title. Are those "Ames grises" ghosts, are they grey because real life is never black and white, are they "grises" because they are drunk (in French, someone is "gris" when he or she ha had too much to drink, and in the book, it is the civilians and the soldiers' main occupation apart from dealing with the war)? There is no doubt that the author also played on Gogol's famous book "Dead Souls".Until the very end, the author manages to capture the reader's intrerest and there is indeed no clues as to who has committed the crime. I will certainly not waste the reader's surprise.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. "During my lifetime, I hardly spoke..." By Friederike Knabe "Now I write as if I had died since then. And, deep down, that is true. That's the real, true truth. For a long time now, I feel dead. I pretend that I still live a bit. I am on borrowed time. That's all." The events that, twenty years later, continue to disturb the nameless narrator of LES AMES GRISES take place in a small town in northern France during World War I, in a region so close to the frontline, that the sounds of war provide a constant rumbling background. In this hauntingly affecting, beautifully written novel Philippe Claudel convincingly evokes the impact on the town of V. of the steadily growing viciousness of war.Central to the story, however, is the murder of a beautiful ten-year-old girl, Belle de jour, that disrupts the still prevailing attitude of complacency among the representatives of the town's establishment. The "Affaire "- Case, as it is introduced early on, raises questions that dig much deeper into the society's fabric than a simple police procedural would be able to do. In his recounting of the events surrounding Belle's death, the protagonist appears to hold his own investigation by introducing, one by one, many of the ghosts, whose long shadows still haunt him into the present. What may have been his role at the time? Through a "parade" of richly drawn characters, who had been either directly, indirectly or possibly involved with the young girl's life or the Case, Claudel weaves a captivating, subtly structured web of evidence, rumours, suspicions, interrogations and deliberate disregard of clues. From the judge, the prosecutor, the father of the victim, to police officers and military, to other important persons in the town and even in the protagonist's own life, all the brilliantly brought to life as individuals with their strengths and weaknesses. The narrator's account is seemingly written in separate memory blocks (chapters), thus justifying the non-linear structure of his report. The reader's attention is constantly required to pick up clues and connections that will reveal much more than the reader would expect at any one time. The conclusion is dramatic and comes with more than one unexpected punch. An extraordinary and powerful novel that will linger on in the reader for a long time. [Friederike Knabe]

Reflections on race, environment, politics, and living on the front lines of change

In Angels by the River, James Gustave "Gus" Speth recounts his unlikely path from a southern boyhood through his years as one of the nation's most influential mainstream environmentalists and eventually to the system-changing activism that shapes his current work. Born and raised in an idyllic but racially divided town that later became the scene of South Carolina's horrific Orangeburg Massacre, Speth explores how the civil rights movement and the South's agrarian roots shaped his later work in the heyday of the environmental movement, when he founded two landmark environmental groups, fought for the nation's toughest environmental laws, spearheaded programs in the United Nations, advised the White House, and moved into a leading academic role as dean of Yale's prestigious School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Yet, in the end, he arrived somewhere quite unexpected–still believing change is possible, but not within the current political and economic system. Throughout this compelling memoir, Speth intertwines three stories–his own, his hometown's, and his country's–focusing mainly on his early years and the lessons he drew from them, and his later years, in which he comes full circle in applying those lessons. In the process he invites others to join him politically at or near the place at which he has arrived, wherever they may have started.

Angels by the River: A Memoir, by James Gustave Speth

Review

"I have been fortunate to know this remarkable man, and now readers can, too. I urge you to accompany Gus Speth through his early life in the segregated South, the liberal North, the heady days of the environmental movement and his disenchantment with inside-the-system fixes. You will find the journey engrossing, eye opening, inspiring, and deeply moving.”--Juliet Schor, co-founder of the Center for a New American Dream and author of True Wealth

Kirkus Reviews-

"Speth―the former dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council and World Resources Institute―tells of his nearly idyllic boyhood in segregated Orangeburg, South Carolina, in the 1940s and 1950s, of his awakening to the evils of racism in the 1960s―he was away at Yale Law School during the infamous Orangeburg Massacre of 1968―and of his growing awareness of the power of social movements. He chronicles how he poured his youthful energy into environmental advocacy because he believed that he 'had largely missed one great American struggle, civil rights, and…did not want to miss another.' The author writes modestly of his distinguished career, explaining the jobs he held and the ones he didn't get, offers generous praise to those who taught him and helped him along the way, and gives a nod to the role played by sheer good luck. Beyond the biographical data, though, Speth is using his memoir to send a message developed in his earlier books: Red Sky at Morning, The Bridge at the Edge of the World and America the Possible. The author pulls no punches in charging that the environmental movement, working within the system, is facing failure, and he asserts that lack of leadership on the issue of climate change 'is probably the greatest dereliction of civic responsibility in the history of the Republic.' In Speth's view, the only option left is to change our political economy from one that gives top priority to profit, production and power to one that values people, place and planet. Both a personal account of a long career dedicated to the environment and a fervent plea for major reform.”

"Angels by the River does what the best memoirs hope to do―launch the reader into a larger collective story. Gus Speth,  a native son of the Deep South,  has spent his life in the service of justice.  He has not only been part of America's social and environmental history, but his leadership has helped shape it. This book is a testament to spirited engagement, showing us how 'the gift of having a cause beyond ourselves' can translate to personal and political transformation. Angels by the River is an antidote against despair and a prayer for action."--Terry Tempest Williams, author of The Open Space of Democracy

"This book is a true gem. While guiding us through the remarkable currents of his life, Gus Speth thrills us with the breadth of his thinking and the depths of his insights. His voice is absolutely essential when it comes to the environment. And he is never less than compelling as he makes the case for transformational change on any number of other important issues, from our obsession with economic growth to US policy in the Middle East."--Bob Herbert, distinguished senior fellow at Demos and former Op-Ed columnist for the New York Times

"Angels by the River is a personal look at the forces that shaped one of America’s great environmental leaders and climate activists. Gus doesn’t shy away from the dangers of climate change, but he maintains an enduring faith that people can and will make the difference. This book will engage, enlighten, and spur readers to action―just as Gus has inspired so many of us with his commitment and drive."--Frances Beinecke, president, Natural Resources Defense Council

"Speth's story is a moving, well-told tale of transcendence: from a segregated southern town, to the forefront of the environmental struggle, to a new understanding of the deep changes we need to put our nation on a just and livable path. A critical book for change agents, young and old."--Van Jones, author, Rebuild The Dream and The Green Collar Economy

“A longtime friend and ally, Gus Speth is a tireless advocate for the environment. His accumulated stories and knowledge, the kind that could only come from decades of experience at the highest levels, provide a unique and insightful look into our history, and the way forward from here.”--Al Gore, former vice president of the United States

"You will not soon read a better or more instructive memoir–a profoundly wise reflection on a life dedicated to solving the largest challenges of our time written by an insider who grew into a radical in the best sense of the word."--David W. Orr, counselor to the president of Oberlin College, and Steven Minter Fellow, the Cleveland Foundation

"Gus Speth is the great environmentalist of our age, and this book chronicles not just his life's journey, but his mind's.  It will make you think anew about many things, including where change comes from!"--Bill McKibben, author of Wandering Home and founder of 350.org

"Gus Speth offers the gift of his own struggle to confront the systemic challenge we face as an example to anyone, young or old, seeking to find a new and possible way forward. His deeply thoughtful book is marvelous, hopeful, and above all life-affirming."--Gar Alperovitz, cofounder of The Democracy Collaborative and author of What Then Must We Do?

Not only is it fun to learn more about Gus's journey from South Carolina to Yale, to the UN, Washington, and now here in Vermont, but I learned a great deal about Southern attitudes toward race, government and politics then (1950's and 60's) and now. And it is these ideas that provide a base for much of the neoliberal ideology that permeates our political culture today. And Gus is not just a spokesperson for the environment and progressive policies, but equally a spokesperson for all kind of social justice and for a government capable of enacting policies key to the survival of our grandchildren. You will enjoy Gus's humility mixed with very clear and well reasoned positions on some very tough issues facing our country today.

Mulkey At this point in our history we need leaders with vision and unflinching dedication to creating a sustainable future for our children and grandchildren. Gus Speth is the archetypal such leader from my generation. I have admired his work and ability to speak with clarity and strength. We were honored and privileged to have him as commencement speaker at Unity College in spring 2013. As president of an environmental college devoted to sustainability science, I know first hand that we have a rough road ahead. Unregulated capitalism and unmitigated climate change are inconsistent with civilization. It is ethically reprehensible that our leaders are not taking strong action to address these cancers eating away the future for our kids. As we face these challenges, there is no substitute for strong, visionary leaders. Speth is such a voice, providing guidance and inspiration. This book is a compelling account of some of his best moments and best thinking. Don't miss it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A compelling life story By Jordan D. Ryan Gus Speth's "Angels by the River: A Memoir" is a beautifully written and compelling story of transitions. It makes fascinating reading to accompany Speth from his boyhood in the segregated south, to becoming an Ivy League and Rhodes scholar, environmental activist, senior White House policy wonk, senior UN official, and Dean of a Yale's environmental school. But "Angels" is much more than simply a recounting of a fascinating life story. Reflecting Speth's profound sense of stewardship and care for our nation and our planet, and his deep thinking about the key problems of our time, "Angels" is nothing less than a compelling case for transformative change.

Extraordinary Novel By Sheri Melnick May Taylor is a single mother and successful wedding planner, having inherited the business from her mother and grandmother. Kylie, her sensitive six -year-old daughter, has her worried, though, because Kylie seems to see and sense things that other people don't.On a recent plane trip, Kylie sees an angel near a big giant of a man. When a fire on the plane forces the plane to make an emergency landing, Martin Cartier, the giant and star hockey player for the Boston Bruins, helps Kylie and May off the plane.Attracted to May in a way that he can't explain, Martin begins driving down to Connecticut from Boston to see her. May is different from any of the women that Martin has known. She falls in love with him as a person, not merely the handsome rich hockey star.Life is good for the Cartiers when Martin marries May, and Kylie, Martin, and May become a family. But events from Martin's past threaten to tear them apart even as the future shows signs of tribulations to come. Will their love be strong enough to keep them together amidst the trials of life?Luanne Rice has written an extraordinary novel. Brimming with emotion, SUMMER LIGHT is a tender triumph showing how love can survive even under the most difficult of circumstances. And the touch of the paranormal adds an ethereal dimension to this read. SUMMER LIGHT will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you very glad that you read this novel.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing Book! By Nancy R. Katz Since 1988 I have been a loyal and avid reader of Luanne Rices books. While browsing at the library years ago I first came across Crazy in Love and today I always look forward to a new Luanne Rice book. That said I must now admit that Summer Light was one of Rices more disappointing books. Yes it did contain many of Rices themes Ive come to enjoy which include the love of a couple for each other, the love of a parent for a child and relatives who disappoint us. But ultimately this book was not a satisfying read. And this may very well be the authors concentration on angels communing with the dead and the author also delving into the world of extra sensory perception.May is a wedding planner in Hubbard Point, Conn. and the single mother of a very unusual young girl Kaylie. After the death of her great grandmother and a traumatic event, Kaylie begins to see things before they happen and also talks to people who have died. Fearing for her daughters sanity, May seeks the help of paranormal experts who have few clues as to what is happening to Kaylie. On a flight home from an appointment in Canada with these experts, Kaylie asks a man to help save her mother and herself when the plane crashes. The man is a great hockey player, Martin Cartier, who has secrets of his own. These include the death of his young daughter a few years before, and his hatred for his father Serge, also a former hockey player, who is now in prison. This chance encounter between May, Martin and Kaylie and the subsequent plane crash which Kaylie predicted will have far reaching consequences which will lead to their association and the book progresses to another tragedy and a predictable conclusion.Unfortunately for me this was a poor example of Luanne Rices plot and characters development. I never found myself either interested in these people or their situation. I do suggest reading some of Luanne Rices really good books like Blue Moon or Safe Harbor to see how good this author can present a book which leaves you yearning to read more by her. Im sorry to say Summer Light just wasnt one of them..

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Heatwarming and Tender Tale By Judith E. Pavluvcik Summer Light by Luanne Rice is a wonderfully heartwarming and touching story. This is definitely Rice at her best! It is romantic and sentimental, without being overbearing, with a touch of the mystical thrown in!May Taylor is a single mother with a "gifted" daughter, who claims to speak with angels. While flying home to Connecticut, Kylie is warned of the impending aircraft danger by one of her angel friends, and seeks the aid of Martin Cartier to help her and her mother to safety. Not knowing why, Kylie knows that this man will somehow play a role in their lives. Cartier, a tough, kind, and greatly sought after bachelor, is a hockey player with the Boston Bruins. He pursues May until she agrees to marry him.Rice once again weaves magic with her characters and one cannot help but fall right into their lives and into their emotions. Balancing issues of death, single parenthood, dual careers, scandal, parental issues, as well as hailing from two different countries, Rice brings home to her readers that any relationship requires commitment, work, dedication, honesty, and most of all love. I was endeared to this quote from the book, "That's what a married couple does . . .love each other through sickness and health, for richer, for poorer, in good times and bad. They love each other's children and try to honor each other's parents - even when the whole thing seems impossible."Their marriage is tested, challenged and tested again and Rice's portrayal of a family ripped apart by the trials of life and past events is uncannily real. I could not put this latest bestseller down and was completely swept away and into the saga. I absolutely loved this book and Rice confirms once again, that only love is real. This is one book that will touch your heart and warm your soul - a definite keeper.
