"the Chosen Few" is a 2015 poetry and performance art collection book from Scars Publications (http://scars.tv) of select writings as a snapshot of some of the live performances/readings during features at "the Cafe Gallery" open mic, which ran every other Wednesday evening (plus bonus weeks) at the Gallery Cabaret in Chicago, with weekly podcast videos and YouTube videos, from 2012 through 2015. Performers appearing in this collection chose one piece of writing from their shows for this collection book. On (very occasional) weeks where there was no scheduled feature, all open mic poets had 10 minute "mini features", and some writers had features over multiple years, so some writers appear on a few dates in this book. This collection book groups poems by author, and the date of the reading appears on the headers of this book. Because this open mic was also usually video recorded for weekly podcast videos and permanent YouTube clips; each show date with a YouTube video will have on line video links accompanying the writing. This collection does not include poems from every feature poet during the 4 years this open mic ran with YouTube videos and weekly podcast videos — features were asked to include their writing in this collection, and this collection only contains writings from performers who sent their writing to this collection book. This open mic has run in Chicago since December 1996, but this is the first and only open mic collection anthology of this nature to highlight the Chicago poetry scene. Writers and artists included in this book (listed in the order they appear in the calendar) are Ned Haggard, Elizabeth Harper, David(Buddha 309) Hargarten, Christine Swanberg, Tom Roby, Jenene Raveslootv, Robert Lawrence, Jeff Helgeson, Annabelle Echo, Marianne Schaefer, Patrick Hurley, Bill Yarrow, Dan Cleary, Oz Hardwick, CousinBones, Wes Heine, Susan T. A Stellar Collection of Good Work By Ned Haggard There are universes of good poetry happening outside of the academies some of which will ultimately find a place within them. Little publishers have always, historically been where the roots first take hold, deepen and spread. This anthology is a repository of quality but, for the most part little known (so far) work by fine poets and worthwhile authors. It is a quality read.

This book is filled with some of his most memorable quotes and comments. Many, including me, have used them as words of inspiration and empowerment -- giving people the motivation to succeed in everything they do -- and never giving up. One of my favorite quotes from him is: "Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war." I highly recommend this book, especially to college students. This great read is guaranteed to help you find yourself -- the inner successful "you."

Este es el primer poemario de la autora. Muchos de los poemas son retratos de un país, un clamor por la libertad, por el respiro. Otros son sencillamente parte de lo que todos vivimos, cada quien lo hace suyo y se refleja en ellos.

The Charterhouse of Parma tells the story of the young Italian nobleman Fabrice del Dongo and his adventures from his birth in 1798 to his death in 1829 (?). Fabrice’s early years are spent in his family’s castle on Lake Como, while most of the novel is set in a fictionalized Parma (both in modern-day Italy).

The Charterhouse Of Parma (Annotated), by Stendhal, C K Scott Moncrieff

About the Author 1783 - 1842.

A Window in Thrums, by J. M. Barrie

About the Author J.M. Barrie was born in 1860, the ninth of ten children of hard-working parents in Scotland's jute-weaving industry. Fascinated by stories of her own life told him by his mother, he was determined to write, finding work on the Nottingham Journal after graduating from Edinburgh University. In 1885, he moved to London as a freelance writer and successfully sold the Auld Licht Idylls, a volume based on his mother's tales. By the time Peter Pan opened on the London stage in 1904, Barrie had written more than thirty novels and plays, many autobiographical and several of them major hits such as The Little Minister, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton. Knighted and awarded the Order of Merit he continued writing into old age. He died in 1937.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Window in Thrums By Diana Graf I bought this book because my father gave me a paperweight which had a house with a small window looking out on a road with a stone wall winding beside it. The inscription reads Window in Thrums. His grandmother had come from Scotland as a girl and had given it to him. He gave it to me and I looked it up on the internet. I found it at amazon and was much surprised to find that it was written by Mr. Barrie. Much of it is in Scottish brogue but once you get used to it the meaning and the emotion of the story come through. It is very meaningful to me. Thank you very much. My father didn't know the story and unfortunately he passed away when the book was in the mail to him. That is my only sorrow associated with this fine book.

Second Harvest is a story of redemption, second chances, first loves, and a very different coming of age tale. Ken, a criminal on the run, is forced back to his small town in North Dakota when his sailboat sinks in a storm. Faced with no alternative, he returns to what was both his best, and cruelest, school, where he revives the most deeply lived time of his life. Told in both the present and past tense, Second Harvest is a genuinely rich, complex, story that features several subplots, and portrays real people struggling with building new lives on the ruins of a painful shared past. It transports the reader to another time and place with evocative prose. Both humorous and tragic, Second Harvest poses an ageless question: Can you regain the path to goodness and courage, when events have shoved you down the wrong trail?

Second Harvest gets to the heart of how life happens By Yan Ross Second Harvest is a beautifully written book, and the writer is very skilled at his craft. It is outstanding in both the narrative and dialogue; the former highly evocative of time and place, and the latter very authentic. The book has obviously benefited from professional editing, and is absolutely a top-notch, professional effort. However, it is not a book that is a casual, leave it on the plane when you are done novel. It is complex in structure, with one narrative in the past and another in the present. The characters are anything but one-dimensional. The writer compels you to care about the outcome and the characters. I read this book in three long days, and found myself reviewing passages, really admiring the skill of the author, and his ability to tell three stories in one book. I won’t go any further on that point as I don’t want to ruin the book for others.I very rarely write reviews. If I don’t like a book, why take the time to comment? If I do like it, I generally don’t like it enough to bother. This is an exception. If you like reading books that not only tell a compelling story, but do so with captivating writing, this is a book you don’t want to miss.

In her teens and twenties, Marlene Freidenreich Kempner of Radom, Poland struggled to survive and safeguard her family under the torments of Nazi rule. Ultimately, after narrowly escaping death in a series of labor and death camps including the infamous Auschwitz, only she and her younger sister were destined to survive, blessed with the opportunity to begin life again in a new land. "Always Good With a Needle" is Marlene's story, one she summoned the courage to share with us in her 91st year of life, and told in her own words. With each passing year, as the number of Holocaust survivors remaining alive to bear witness to this human tragedy dwindles, the numbers tattooed on Marlene's arm fade with age but never truly disappear. "Always Good With a Needle" is a cautionary tale of terror and loss and yet ultimately one testifying to the power of courage and of hope.

Introduction by Hortense Calisher Commentary by Edmund Wilson, Henry Seidel Canby, and Arthur Mizener   Fitzgerald’s second novel, a devastating portrait of the excesses of the Jazz Age, is a largely autobiographical depiction of a glamorous, reckless Manhattan couple and their spectacular spiral into tragedy. Published on the heels of This Side of Paradise, the story of the Harvard-educated aesthete Anthony Patch and his willful wife, Gloria, is propelled by Fitzgerald’s intense romantic imagination and demonstrates an increased technical and emotional maturity. The Beautiful and Damned is at once a gripping morality tale, a rueful meditation on love, marriage, and money, and an acute social document. As Hortense Calisher observes in her Introduction, “Though Fitzgerald can entrance with stories so joyfully youthful they appear to be safe—when he cuts himself, you will bleed.”Includes a Modern Library Reading Group Guide

The windows in the living room of the gray house are wide open patiently exchanging the tainted inner atmosphere of liquor and smoke for the fresh drowsiness of the late hot dusk. There are dying flower scents upon the air, so thin, so fragile, as to hint already of a summer laid away in time." This is the story of a young couple Anthony and Gloria Patch living out their days to the hilt in New York City as they await the death of Anthony's grandfather, Adam Patch from whom they expect to inherit his massive fortune. Gloria is a spoilt child from Kansas City turned into a sophisticated and most beautiful woman. Gloria does not intend to lift a finger to do any domestic work in the home, no matter how slight; while Anthony who considers himself an aesthete, finds it quite hard to get his act together and instead of buckling down to some work, prefers instead to hang with his wife and their friends on nightly binges. They drink and eat in the classiest restaurants and hotels, rent the most expensive apartments, travel out to the West in the spring time driving plush cars, wearing top-of-the-line clothing and just generally living it up high on the hog, as they wait. Meet Maury Noble who is Anthony best friend who spends his time between New York and Philadelphia; Richard Caramel who has just completed writing a book and looking for new ideas for a second one. Joseph Bloeckman from Munich who started out small in America and is now a big shot in Show Biz. Also the quiet Jewess Rachael Barnes and Muriel Kane who is young, flirtatious and sometimes a bit too talkative and Tana the Japanese housekeeper of the Patches. We are shown the Patches at their very best as the novel starts, with the world at their feet and loaded with cash with which they make very expensive choices. But, as we get further in, we see things begin to change gradually and we realize that those very choices will be their very downfall. It was quite a good read but it could be very heartbreaking at times as we put ourselves into the shoes of the main characters. All lovers of F. Scott Fitzgerald should read this book if you haven't done so already, and those of you who like reading about the ultra rich in the Roaring Twenties this one is for you. It is the kind of book that you feel you will want to read again. It is that good and I shall miss it.Reviewed by Heather Marshall Negahdar (SUGAR-CANE 10/04/04)

Moral depravity personified By Chris Salzer The genius of F.Scott Fitzgerald shines brilliantly in this vastly underappreciated classic novel of moral depravity. The pervasive themes of Fitzgerald include moral corruption, profligate behavior, agnosticism, selfishness, narcissism, egocentrism, and of course, a sick obsession with money and alcohol. These themes permeate all too well throughout the beautifully written The Beautiful and Damned(pardon the pun).Released in 1922, 2 years subsequent to the seminal This Side of Paradise and 3 years prior to the magnum opus The Great Gatsby, incomprehensibly, The Beautiful and Damned was not well received critically nor financially. As a result, history has erroneously filed it under the dubious sophomore jinx category. Strange it may seem, I vehemently disagree. As you read this book, you witness first-hand the maturation of an amazing writer. No American writer of the 20th Century can compare to the profound power and unwavering genius that is F.Scott Fitzgerald. If you enjoyed The Great Gatsby, you will no doubt enjoy this work - an equally beautifully writen and tragic tale of aspiring morally depraved young Americans in pursuit of The American Dream."Remarkable that a person can comprehend so little and yet live in such a complex civilization."

Teale Nearly ninety years after its first publication, _The Beautiful and Damned_ is still a shockingly relevant account of the entitlement class, the children of the rich or privileged who don't know how to navigate through life without big money. And, it's a New York City novel--written as only a mid-westerner can. It seems to me that because New Yorkers are too much in the middle of it to see themselves clearly, an intelligent "outsider" like F. Scott Fitzgerald must come along. To write as well as he did, Fitzgerald let the city inhabit him. New York got into his blood, and he recorded it in narrative right down to the dirt under the carpet. Fitzgerald's details lead the reader into the depths of the beautiful and doomed couple, the Gloria-Anthony entanglement, as they are part and parcel of the extremes of poverty and wealth (in the World War I era or the roaring 20s).I don't know how Fitzgerald knew what he knew about the human psyche, or specifically about how a young man might react when he is good-looking and swimming in money and New York, but Fitz's life at Princeton University among this set of people gave him the environment in which to observe; Fitzgerald supplied the story around which the narrative coheres. Of course, there are autobiographical elements to this novel--a lot of himself and Zelda--but what the literary art requires is critical distance. To put his main characters through some shameful scenes, Fitzgerald had to know what tough love is in the New York City context. He had to put his couple to the test, people who from birth had relied on the "religion" of charm and money. And the author had more than just critical distance: F. Scott had them down right! Every expression, every word. Gloria: "This is life! Who cares for the morrow." And you can see Anthony deciding to have one more drink, his speech becoming slurred, his manners maudlin. While Anthony and Gloria wait for his inheritance, we find out what they're made of.Most pleasurable about Fitzgerald's craft is his carefully-controlled technique of letting Anthony and Gloria visit hell (the "damned" in the title) while softening the harsh surgery-like light with well-timed, well-handled, lyrical sentences. In a single beautiful line, the passage of the winter sun describes both Fitzgerald's craft and his beautiful couple's descent: Gloria "lay still for a moment in the great bed watching the February sun suffer one last attenuated refinement in its passage through the leaded panes into the room" (p.173). Fitzgerald knew how to show the attenuated and refined way downhill. One more thing about the craft of writing: Only the omniscient narrator technique--which Fitzgerald employs--can show characters in shameful acts and show what they're thinking, and the circumstances in which they got there, and how they "need" money in order to "survive." I wonder if now, in nearly 2010, this novel is not more important than in 1922. More than ever, _The Beautiful and Damned_ is a national portrait. (I can see how "spending" money could be the "sex" in the novel.)Advice: Read this novel while in New York, if possible. The first time I read _The Beautiful and Damned_, I was living near 123rd (me, a Westerner!). I looked up every address in the novel (except for the gray house near Cos Cob, Conn.) and got to know New York through this novel. In fact, I could almost pick out their final apartment in Harlem near 127th.

In 1890, Indian Territory (today’s Oklahoma) was rough, rowdy and full of pioneers hoping to start a new life full of promise by using hard work and clever thinking. The railroad was creeping across the new nation and many a young man saw opportunities for new towns, fame and fortune. The Chickasaw Indians were neighbors and held great power in the area but one man, Williamson J. Milburn used both his wits and his gun to birth a new town along the Blue River. This book is the story of that young man and his family as they began a new life in the lawless country of Milburn, Indian Territory. It is also the true story of Mode Milburn, born in Texas, who as a young boy came by wagon to Lebanon, Indian Territory and then to Milburn where he grew up in the pioneer town. His father, Adoniram J., found a leather wallet belonging to Thompson Pickens, a Chickasaw Indian and returned it to Thompson, forever changing their lives. Adoniram, Williamson, and their families built the town and developed friendships until one afternoon it all changed with a bullet outside of Adoniram’s hotel. Mode recollects his childhood experiences, pranks played on his friends and family, murder, unexplained mystery, death and life’s unexpected twists and turns as Oklahoma becomes a state. Banks open, businesses spring up, horses turn into carriages and carriages turn into cars. Follow Mode as he brings the telephone into Milburn and falls in love with his sweetheart Alma, a schoolteacher in a one room schoolhouse in Emet, Oklahoma. Mode’s life is one of strong family, hardships, loyalty and unbelievable heartache mixed in with beauty, kindness and enough personal conviction to raise a family in the new town of Milburn, Oklahoma during the turn of the twentieth century. Families were strong and close during that time before technology isolated us from each other, and the world got smaller through mass media. Milburn is a book that captures history and life as it was, and in many ways, it still should be.

The photographs alone are worth the price of the book. I wish everyone would read books like this book rather than depend on fictional novels, movies, cable news and Television shows for historical enlightenment. I highly recommend this book and congratulations to the author for an outstanding literary work .

This is a true story of a family held hostage and a bank extortion which occurred in January of 1984 in Dallas, Texas. The story follows the crime, the investigation by the FBI and the trial. The author is the FBI Agent who was assigned to the case. The prosecutor was a man known as a Texas legend who earlier in his career was the lead prosecutor in a case of some national interest. That would be the State of Texas v Jack Ruby. The idea as to how to commit the extortion came to the bad guys right out of a Hollywood movie. The investigation certainly did not follow the path of a simple and easy to believe Hollywood plot.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Hilarious, shocking, and true. A must read! By Russ A. This non-fiction account of a horrendous crime that occurred in Dallas, Texas, by the FBI case agent who led the investigation is an absolute must read. It is neither politically nor stylistically correct, and thank God for that. It is, instead, at times hilarious, gut-wrenchingly shocking, frightening, unbelievable, and at all times both true and thoroughly entertaining. It is written in the inimitable and indescribable voice of one of those guys who for 22 years kept your father from being beaten to death and your daughter from being raped and all the other things street agents do in the FBI. This is no gloss-over love-me from a suit. The author has never wanted more than to throw bad guys in jail and he succeeded admirably. He could also be a stand-up comedian, but thank heavens that he chose to protect us instead.Fair disclosure: I’m a retired FBI agent, too, so I’m thoroughly biased, but I’m not exaggerating when I say I absolutely loved this book. I literally could not put it down. Okay, that’s a lie. I did put it down when I got to the end of the story and reached the copy of the appellate court opinion appended onto it. Even that is entertaining, but I’m a retired lawyer, too, so take that with a grain of salt. So I ate dinner and cleaned up the dishes in the break and then read the appellate opinion, but considering that the book came in the mail at 4:00 o’clock and I’m writing this at 7:30 PM, you can see that I totally devoured this. If I could give it six stars, I would. It’s not polished. The font is wrong, the page justification is wrong, and the photos are almost useless. It’s raw and disrespectful and did I mention politically incorrect? It is also absolutely, totally, wonderful. Read it. You’re an idiot if you don’t. In fact, you should read it at least twice. The stuff at the beginning is twice as funny after you've read what happens at the end.

I often read posts by Jerry Webb on an Internet board of former Agents, and as Jerry often says, "People I meet on this board are friends I have just not met in person." I consider Jerry one of those. I once told Jerry that he should write a book, as I really enjoyed the way he writes. I am truly glad he did!

Second, while I have never met Jerry Webb, I have communicated with him over the internet. Jerry has an outstanding sense of humor, and even though this is a serious story of serious crime, Jerry manages to inject the type of humor needed when dealing with high pressure, sensitive investigations. I thoroughly enjoyed Jerry's narrative of a major case and the obstacles he and his fellow Agents had to overcome to solve this difficult case and convict the perpetrators . I've read books by other law enforcement officers and Jerry ranks up there with the best of them.

Read Ebook A Wander in Vetland, by John Hicks

John Hicks is an English trained vet who has spent much of his working life in rural New Zealand. On one level A Wander in Vetland is an insider's look at his changing profession. Hicks's entertaining anecdotes mark a fond farewell to "Herriotism": the dated public image of life as a rural vet, so lovingly depicted in the novels of James Herriot. But this memoir has a far broader scope. In a lively, literary style John Hicks links his tales with some of the more curious aspects of history - particularly veterinary and medical history. Hemlock poisoning leads to a discourse on Socrates' death; brain surgery on a ram poses the question of how Neolithic man performed similar operations. There are insights into the nature of bladder stones in animals and how these relate to the suffering of Samuel Pepys in the seventeenth century; and if you ever wondered how Italian women seduced their lovers or about the use of goose quills by eunuchs in Eastern seraglios, the answers are here. A Wander in Vetland also tackles serious issues such as a personal account of facing cancer. It is at turns fascinating, hilarious, and sobering or - as in an expose of how Noah collected animals for his ark - riotously satirical. An unusual and highly entertaining read.

It is extremely well written and entertaining with a collection of John’s memorable experiences as a veterinarian doing the work he loved with the people, colleagues and clients, whose company he cherished. His huge depth of knowledge of historical events has meant he has cleverly interwoven many of these with his own interesting veterinary experiences. He shows a great ability to find humour and interest in every day events, a prerequisite I believe to being a really proficient and successful veterinarian. His writing is perceptive about the changing roles of veterinarians, especially New Zealand rural veterinarians, and their farewell to “Herriotism” and the new challenges the profession is going to have to deal with. This book is a must read for any young veterinarian or one contemplating entering the profession.

The Christian View of God and the World As Centring in the Incarnation: Being the Kerr Lectures for 1890-1891, by James Orr

About the Author James Orr (1844-1913) was a Scottish theologian born in Glasgow. He ministered at the East Bank Church in Harwick and later was professor of apologetics and theology at the United Free Church College in Glasgow. A highly respected evangelical lecturer both in Scotland and the United States, Orr was a valiant defender of historic orthodoxy in the heyday of liberal Protestantism, as seen in his contributions to The Fundamentals (1909-1915) as well as his chief apologetic work, The Christian View of God and the World.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A COMPREHENSIVE DEFENSE OF THE CHRISTIAN POSITION AS A UNIFIED WHOLE By Steven H Propp James Orr (1844–1913) was a Scottish Presbyterian minister and professor of church history and theology. He was an influential defender of evangelical doctrine and a contributor to The Fundamentals. [NOTE: page numbers refer to the 480-page Kregel paperback edition.]He wrote in the first chapter of this 1893 book, “I might briefly define the object of the present Lectures by saying that they aim at the exhibition, and… at the rational vindication, of what I have called … ‘The Christian View of the World.’ … To some the subject I have chosen may seem unduly wide and vague… [but] it enables me to deal with Christianity in its entirety or as a system, instead of dealing with particular aspects or doctrines of it… if Christianity is to be effectually defended from the attacks made upon it, it is the comprehensive method which is rapidly becoming the more urgent. The opposition which Christianity has to encounter is no longer confined to special doctrines or to points of supposed conflict with the natural sciences---for example, the relations of Genesis and geology---but extends to the whole manner of conceiving of the world, and of man’s place in it…. It is the Christian view of things in general which is being attacked, and it is by an exposition and vindication of the Christian view of things as a whole that the attack can most successfully be met.” (Pg. 3-4) He adds, “the question at issue between the opponents and defenders of the Christian view of the world is at bottom the question of the supernatural…” (Pg. 10)He states his purpose as “showing that there is a definite Christian view of things, which has a character, coherence, and unity of its own, and stands in sharp contrast with counter theories and speculations, and that this world-view has the stamp of reason and reality upon itself, and can amply justify itself at the bar of history and of experience… the Christian view of things forms a logical whole which cannot be infringed on, or accepted or rejected piecemeal, but stands or falls in its integrity…” (Pg. 16) He begins the second chapter with the statement, “It is the fundamental assumption of these Lectures that the central point in the Christian view of God and the world is the acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as a truly Divine Person---the Son of God made flesh.” (Pg. 39) He suggests that “I am justified in saying that when the ground of Divine Revelation is once left behind, we have no logical halting-place short of Agnosticism; not because a theistic view of the world is unreasonable, but because a living Theism requires as its complement belief in Revelation. We have these alternatives: either to revivify our Theism… in which case we are back to a supernatural view of the universe; or… to dispense with the idea of God altogether, and try to explain the world without reason, without final cause, without spiritual assumptions of any kind.” (Pg. 51) He states, “To sum up, we have seen that two movements are to be discerned in history: the one a downward movement leading away from Christ, and resulting from the denial of, or tampering with, His full Divinity; the other, an upward movement… [which] begins from the impossibility of the mind abiding permanently in the denial of a rational basis for the universe.” (Pg. 64-65)He argues, “Here… it is that the Christian view of God has its strength against any conception of God based on mere grounds of natural theology. It binds together, in the closest reciprocal relations, the two ideas of God and Revelation. The Christian doctrine… is much more than a doctrine of simple Theism. God, in the Christian view, is a Being who enters into the history of the world … working in it His general and special providence… giving to man that knowledge of Himself by which he is enabled to attain the highest ends of his own existence, and to co-operate freely in the carrying out of Divine ends; above all, discovering Himself as the God of Redemption, who … executes... His gracious purpose for the salvation of mankind.” (Pg. 77) He points out, “The chief criticism I would … make upon the design argument… is that it is too narrow… the basis for the inference that the universe has a wise and intelligent Author is far wider… It is not the marks of purpose alone which necessitate this inference, but everything which bespeaks order, plan, arrangement, harmony, beauty, rationality in the connection and system of things. It is the proof of the presence of THOUGHT in the world---whatever shape that may take.” (Pg. 102)He contends, “the Christian view of a personal and holy God, as the Author of the universe, and its moral Legislator and Ruler, is the only one in which the reason and the heart of man can permanently rest… It is not one line of evidence only which establishes the theistic position, but the concurrent force of many, starting from different and independent standpoints… At the very least these considerations show… that the Christian view of God is not Unreasonable; that it is in accordance with the highest suggestions of reason applied to the facts of existence; that there is no bar in rational thought or in science to its full acceptance.” (Pg. 111)He observes, “Man’s creation, it is true, is only the starting point of a new line of evolution, but that evolution is one of moral life. So far as the teaching of evolution goes, then, man is the crown and masterpiece of this whole edifice of creation, and this also is the teaching of the Bible. I have frequently been struck with this in reading the works of Mr. [Herbert] Spencer and of other evolutionists, that none of them supposes that evolution is ever to reach a higher being than man; that whatever future development there is to be will not be development beyond humanity, but development within humanity. In this it is implied that man is the end of nature, and that the end of nature is a moral one… At the summit of nature’s gradations… there stands a being fitted for the Kingdom of God.” (Pg. 133-134) He says, “Materialism is the denial of moral freedom, or of freedom of any kind, and with its triumph moral life would disappear.” (Pg. 149-150) He suggests, “I think, then, we may conclude that reason does create a presumption, and that a very strong one, in favour of a future life. The considerations we have urged proved the possibility of immortality, and show that the soul of man is naturally fitted for immortality… They cannot give absolute certainty… But so far as they go, they must be accepted as a powerful corroboration and confirmation, from the side of nature, of the Christian view.” (Pg. 160-161)He asserts, “The evidence which is adduced … of the originally savage state of man is equally inconclusive. There is no reason to believe that existing savage races represent the earliest condition of mankind; rather there is evidence to show that the represent a degradation from a higher state… when we turn to the regions which tradition points to as the cradle of the race, we find great empires and civilizations which show no traces of those gradual advances from savagery which the modern theory requires, but which represent man as from the earliest period as in possession of faculties of thought and action of a high order. The theory, again, that man began with the lowest Fetishism in religion, and only gradually raised himself through Polytheism to Monotheism, finds no support from the history of religions… Another side from which the Christian view is contested… is the evidence that has been accumulated of an extreme antiquity of the human race. I am not aware that the Bible is committed to any definite date for the appearance of man on the earth… while some geologists tell us that one or two hundred thousand years are needed, others, equally well informed, declare that ten thousand years would cover all the facts at present in evidence.” (Pg. 183-185) Later, he adds, “There is not a word in the Bible to indicate that in its view death entered the animal world as a consequence of the sin of man.” (Pg. 197)He states, “there is really no intermediate position in which the mind can logically rest between the admission of a truly Divine Christ and a purely humanitarian view… Why is it that we cannot rest in a conception of Christ as simply a prophet of a higher order? Or as a God-filled man in whom the Divine dwelt as it dwells in no other?... These views seem plausible; they are accepted by many; they seem at first sight to bring Christ nearer to us than on the supposition of His true-God-manhood; why cannot the mind of the Church rest in them? Must not the explanation be that… the facts of Christianity … refuse to square with any subordinate view…” (Pg. 215) He adds, “if we are to do justice to the facts of Christianity, we must accept the supernatural view of Christ’s Person, and recognize in Him the appearance of a Divine Being in humanity… this doctrine is a integral part of Christianity. If this were all, it might still be said, Rather than that this doctrine be accepted, let Christianity go! But… we are not at liberty to let Christianity go… the facts are too strong for the attempt.” (Pg. 234) He also concludes, “The eschatology of Christianity springs from its character as a teleological religion…Christianity is the teleological religion par excellence… extending in its issues far beyond this little spot called earth, and touching in its influence the remotest regions of creation.” (Pg. 322-323)It is unfortunate that Orr has almost completely dropped out of the current theological discussion. Modern Christians might benefit by his systematic, learned, and balanced exposition of Christian doctrine.
