Poetry. "In this spectacular debut collection, Brenda Yates reminds us that "bodily" knowledge is also a worldly knowledge—that is, an understanding of our own shifting circumstances—as well as a recognition, a true knowing, of our transience upon this earth. These poems are resplendent with praise for the world's bounty and yet equally compassionate for our daily failings. With the power and richness of song, Brenda Yates' poems ask the questions that accompany those answers every body fears to know."—David St. John "Brenda Yates' brilliance: a disarming, absolutely forthright telling of the world's sorrows and its innumerable, itinerant joys. With a naturalist's eye Yates builds poems from botany, genetics, philosophy, history, astronomy, anthropology—awedriven poems, each image lifted and illuminated by its inveighing loss, 'no / period, no exclamation to indicate the end of something, / just one foot in front of the other as always, on the way / to this place—a sidewalk after work, heading home.' BODILY KNOWLEDGE marks what is ours for a while. It is a work of clarion beauty."—Dorothy Barresi

The incredible beauty of the writen word By Ellen Leary I keep this book on my bedside table, where I can reach it when I want to be soothed by Ms. Yates' enormous capacity for the beauty of the written word. Sensory language that makes use of the physical world around us and the inner yearnings of our souls. Her keen eye and her enormous heart combine to help us understand some of the more complex issues in our lives.

The beauty and rhythm of Brenda Yates' poetic language, soothes, enlightens and enriches one's view of the self and world at large. Her descriptions of nature are the best I've read. Her poems will last for generations to come. They are universal. One never tires re-reading them.
