Bill Dowis spent the first 29 years of his life trying to be as comfortable as possible. When things proved too challenging he gave up, and when life handed him something that was too difficult he simply quit. But with a family to take care of, and his weight on the rise, he was forced to push outside his comfort zone where he found euphoria in the pain and accomplishment of running. Chasing the Dragon is the story of running for reasons other than to simply get in shape. It is the story of running through loss, pain, pride, success, failure, friendship, and love. It is the story of the changes that come from running, the constant search to redefine possible, and how a chronic quitter became addicted to the most physically demanding thing in his life.

By Buddy Gott I think some readers may see the subject matter of this book and think the book is just for runners. It's not. I think this book will be inspiring to all who read it.I'm not a runner, but I was able to relate to the many of the struggles the author encountered earlier in his life before he found something that he became very passionate about. When we find something we're passionate about, our entire lives can go in wonderful directions we'd never even dreamt of before. It happened for Bill Dowis and it can happen for all of us. Read his story here. He's got a great writing style and this book moved me and inspiredme. I bet it will for you too.FTC Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

By Garrett Robinson Bill and I have known each other for some time online. To my great surprise, when he published this book he sent me a paperback copy, though not with any obligation (implied or otherwise) to review.I try to keep myself healthy, but I wouldn't say I'm very interested in fitness. Even less am I inclined toward running, or heaven forbid, marathons. One might read this book looking for inspiration to start exercise, or to keep exercising once you've begun. None of that was on my mind when I began. I was not expecting to get much, if anything, from this book. Those expectations, or lack thereof, were shattered from the very beginning. Chapter One hits you like a punch in the gut, yet leaves you aching to turn the next page. As it progresses the book is gripping, earnest, heartbreaking and maddeningly inspirational in turn. I could not help but be sucked in by Bill's pure and unabashed love for the marathon, and his strenuous personal trials in a life that seemed, more and more with every page, to revolve around his training. But far from a pattern of selfishness, his inner drive stems from a desire to be his best self. Pride motivates him, as it does all of us, but more so, love for his family and a desire to find friendship and a community that have been lacking all his life. The tale of this journey, once begun, cannot be abandoned without gargantuan mental effort. There are no passages of flowery prose or soaring turns of phrase in this book, thank god. The book does not need them, and would be cheapened by their inclusion. Yes, all authors must make some slight concessions to story structure—in this case, excellently done, with a midpoint that might make you weep and a third act that made me stay up late to finish (a running book, for crying out loud!). But rather than wrapping his memoir in some style meant to titillate the literary snobs, Bill has infused it instead with the qualities that define him, as we swiftly learn: earnestness, authenticity, passion, drive, and a faint disbelief at the capability of the human spirit. This book, which I formerly viewed as a possible chore to appease a longtime Internet buddy, has become instead my one of my surprise favorite reads. I would try to guess at the type of reader who would enjoy it, but that category must be too broad to describe without doubling the length of this review. In summary, if you are in doubt, or if you are not: read it anyway.

Hard to put the book down while reading it. If you are a fan of John Bingham's Accidental Athlete you will love this book as well. Glad I got a chance to read it. It is inspirational and makes you want to go out and hit the road.
