To enjoy Kipling’s poetry you have to accept the convention of the ballad. You have to accept that not all poetry is sensitive and spiritual. Not all poetry is about the poet’s soul, or superior perceptions or feelings. Some poetry, and the ballad in particular, is designed to be objective, to tell stories about fictional characters, to have an immediate impact, to be closer in some ways to the short story; to tell a tale and impress moral messages. Kipling comes squarely out of this tradition, a tradition that goes back to the Border Ballads, to Percy’s reliques, via the long narrative poems of the 18th century which continued to be written in the Victorian period but, these days, are little read. 'The Seven Seas' is the most remarkable book of verse that Mr. Kipling has given us. Here the human sympathy is broader and deeper, the patriotism heartier and fuller, the intellectual and spiritual insight keener, the command of the literary vehicle more complete and sure, than in any previous verse-work by the author. The volume pulses with power—power often rough and reckless in expression, but invariably conveying the effect intended. There is scarcely a line which does not testify to the strong individuality of the writer."—London Globe.

About the Author Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. 3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Poetry to be read at leisure By Kudladar This is a corrected review. Earlier I had given this book three stars and remarked, "The cockney lingo that makes up the narrative too difficult to read." And, "Outdated stuff and uses language derogatory to the natives. Paints a false picture of social conditions in India under the British rule. Many descriptions are too vague to understand." (July 7, 2013). But recently some one pointed out to me, that I am wrong. So I went through the book again and I found that I had written the review hurriedly. ( I had read a couple of books in succession and mislaid my attention). I do not want to be unfair to the great poet Rudyard Kipling. The book is a valuable contribution to the understanding of people. Sample: The Mother Lodge: Outside- "Sergeant! Sir! Salute! Salaam! Inside- "Brother," an' it doesn't do no 'arm. This is a book that would live for ever and enjoyable at every read.
