Excerpt from Two Volunteer Missionaries Among the Dakotas: Or the Story of the Labors of Samuel W. And Gideon H. PondThe Dakotas received their earliest impressions of civilization from three distinct classes of persons, widely differing from one another in character, occupation, and motives. These three classes were the military, including government officials, the mercantile, and the aggressively religious. The influence exerted by the Fort Snelling garrison on the great body of the Indians was necessarily limited, and worked no essential change in their character or mode of life. No serious conflict occurred between the Sioux and the military forces prior to the year 1862, and the influence of the post was probably, for the most part, beneficial. Liquor sellers were not allowed to enter the Indian country, and an honest and determined effort was made to exclude all persons of doubtful character and antecedents, and this effort was fairly successful. In April, 1848, Scott Campbell, the veteran interpreter, was banished from the country in pursuance of this policy. His fault was selling liquor to the Indians.Mercantile interests in the northwest were represented exclusively by the fur traders, many of whom were French Canadians by birth, and nearly all of whom had Indian families, so that in the last generation of traders many mixed bloods were found. These traders were necessarily men of ability, energy, and sagacity, but sadly lacked cultivation, and in fact many of them could neither read nor write. Their influence with the Indians was, generally speaking, neither elevating nor improving. There were a few exceptions to this rule, among which Mr. Renville, of Lac Qui Parle, may be classed.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A book for anyone who has an interest in the life of the Dakotas, and how they adjusted to civilization By Michael Outstanding story of how the Dakotas of our area were introduced to Christianity by two young men who braved the rigors of Minnesota's wildernesses and weather to serve Native Americans in the 19th Century. Their determination to learn the language, suffer deprivation, sickness and possible death, should interest anyone. They brought the Gospel to this region.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the life and times of Pablo By John Snowy Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar's ambition and ruthlessness made him one of the wealthiest, most powerful and most violent criminals of all time. Escobar eventually controlled over 80% of the cocaine shipped to the U.S. He was named one of the ten richest people on earth by Fortune and Forbes magazines. But his rise to infamy cost the lives of three Colombian presidential candidates, an attorney general, a justice minister, more than 200 judges, dozens of journalists and more than 1,000 police officers. In his last years, Escobar seems to have removed himself from direct involvement in drug trafficking. Instead, he siphoned off profits from cocaine dealers through a kind of taxation system he also imposed on other criminals operating within his area of influence. He considered the tax a compensation for his contribution to the development of the Colombian cocaine industry and his efforts to have the American-Colombian extradition treaty of 1979 nullified.I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the life and times of Pablo. Amazing how he turned out to be such a powerful drug dealer, with a cut throat attitude, and billions of dollars in his pocket. This is very thoroughly researched and painstakinly well written I could tell. I did not know one single thing about the role that Pablo played in this world, and after I finished reading this book, I could summarize every small role that he played in this world. So, if you want to learn more about the famous Pablo Escobar, this book is just for you.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Don't Buy This Book By A. Burer Do not buy this book. If you watched the Netflix series you will learn much more. I was surprised to find that the book was a pamphlet which was poorly written in very bad English and was obviously canted towards Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria as hero. And then what was most surprising was that most of the book was made up of articles about criminals, children who had been abused, serial killers and murders and this was all given as a "free bonus". None of this was made obvious when I was looking at the book on Amazon. I demand that Amazon take this book off its list or at least make it known the full horrific contents

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is not a "book", just a few pages briefly detailing the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar By FRod Basically the book has about 10 pages(5 full pages in reality) of text regarding Pablo Escobar. The rest of the 53 pages are taken up by filler, which are the "free books" promised when you purchase it which have nothing to do with Pablo Escobar. This is a total waste of money. Immediately applied for a return and full refund. Cant believe this item doesnt have any negative reviews. Extremely Disappointed. You can get more Pablo Escobar content than this on his wikipedia page...

Every A great novel exploring love and lust, drugs, sex and rock and roll, over the bittersweet angst of young adulthood coupled with the smell of death and dying and our sense of mortality. Mr. Jones has a very unusual way with words that at times leaves you laughing on the floor and other times scratching your head in wonderment. His ability to develop characters is excellent and you will be totally drawn into their worlds because in each and every one of them you will recognize parts of yourself. So wade into the depths of the Mill Stream in the town of Woodstock NY and learn about yourself, you are part of this story, you have had loves and love and angst and desire just like these folk and will relate to their machinations as they try ever so hard to find themselves - as did we all.

Oz All-Stars By Blake Petit Like the previous Oz book, "Rinkitink in Oz," this was an outing by Baum that scores by deviating a bit from the standard Oz formula. The characters in the book are on a journey, as usual, but instead of trying to get to the Emerald City, the characters are departing that city to find the missing Princess Ozma who, along with most of the powerful magical objects in Oz, has vanished. Furthermore, Baum puts together one of the largest primary casts ever in an Oz book, including Dorothy and Toto, the Wizard, the Patchwork Girl, the Sawhorse, the Cowardly Lion, Betsy Bobbin and Hank, Trot and Button-Bright and the Woozy, as well as adding the Frogman, Cayke the Cookie Cook and the Big Lavender Bear and the Little Pink Bear. While it's nice to see to many characters, it does hurt the book somewhat -- it shows really how superfluous Besty and Trot are with Dorothy around, and it includes a bizarre little subplot with Toto that doesn't really add much. Furthermore, the ending is really syrupy and saccharine, even for an Oz book. The addition of the Frogman is a major plus, though -- he is easily the most entertaining new character added to the series since Scraps the Patchwork Girl, and it was nice to have a book that for once didn't rely on the old villains like the Nome King or the old deus ex machina of Ozma's magic picture and Glinda's magic book. In fact, I kind of wish those two items had stayed lost -- other Oz books rely on them entirely too much for their resolution.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A Lost Princess By A Customer The Lost Princess of Oz is one of L. Frank Baum's most imaginative books. It begins with a serious problem, Ozma's disappearance, and with many of the favorite characters. Yet in a parallel story, an early chapter takes us to the Winkie Country and introduces us to some delightful new characters, The Frogman and Cayke the Cookie Cook. We know that Cayke's stolen magic dishpan is somehow related to Ozma's disappearance.I love the role that Scraps, the Patchwork Girl, plays in this book. We meet some whimsical new villages and the beings who inhabit them. We pay attention to small details that are nonetheless important to those most affected by them, such as Toto's missing growl. Illusions are turned upside down and inside out, making us think. It's a delightful journey, all in all, one that I highly recommend.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great fun to read By F. Orion Pozo Tik-Tok of Oz by L. Frank Baum (Books of Wonder edition)Tik-Tok of Oz is a delightful book with an interesting story of how it came to be. A small Editor's Note by Peter Glassman on page 10 of this book tells the story. There had been two successful stage plays based on the first two Oz books and Baum wanted to write a play based on the third, Ozma of Oz. However, he found out he couldn't use many of the characters because he had already sold the stage rights to them. He took the plot of the third book and changed Dorothy and Ozma into two new characters Betsy Bobbin and Queen Ann Soforth. Then he used the popular Shaggy Man who was introduced in The Road to Oz and changed many of the incidents in the story to create a new script for the stage that he called The Tik-Tok Man of Oz. The play was a success so he then rewrote it into this novel. If you have read Ozma of Oz, you will indeed see the similarities. Once again an army of one soldier and many officers is led by a girl leader in an attack against the Nome King. This time it is Queen Ann Soforth from the smallest and poorest kingdom in Oz. She is young and tired of her tiny kingdom and wants to seek adventure. When her sister jokingly suggests that Ann raise an army and conquer Oz, Ann likes the idea. She convinces all but one of the eighteen men of her kingdom to join her army and they set out. However, the sorceress Glinda, learns of her plans and magically transports Ann and her army across the Deadly Desert and out of Oz entirely.Meanwhile Betsy Bobbin, like Dorothy in Ozma of Oz, is lost at sea in a storm with her companion Hank the Mule. They are cast up on shore of the Rose Kingdom where they meet up with the Rose Princess, the Shaggy Man and Polychrome, the Rainbow's daughter. This group goes on a quest with the Shaggy Man who is seeking his lost brother, a prisoner of the Nome King. They meet up with Queen Ann's army and Tik-Tok. This large group decides to go in search of the Nome King together.Their quest leads them to the fairy kingdom of the great Jinjin, Tititi-Hoochoo where they meet a young dragon named Quox. Their encounter with the Nome King is terribly amusing and their search for the Shaggy Man's brother has a remarkable outcome. What starts out as a reworking of another story takes on a life of its own to become an entertaining and amusing story. The John R. Neill illustrations are wonderful and there are 12 full-page color plates. The end papers present the first published map of the land of Oz.

Helen Mitsios's poetry is a lovely synthesis of high culture and the beating human heart. She takes as her subjects and reference points European cities, literary and biblical figures, philosophers, mythology—but, in poem after poem, her intimate voice—tempered by doubt, pain, and love—speaks directly to us. Mitsios is one of my favorite poets writing today. --Yehoshua November

Poems That Incorporates Both the Strife and Striving By Amazon Customer From Wittgenstein to Norse Sagas to Napoleon Bonaparte, this collection from Mitsios betrays a deep knowledge of World History and The History of Thought in general. Outside of the supreme lyrical gifts here we find what I'd call a rival to Ezra Pound; throughout is the untangling of such multiple histories through a personal scope of the livers of the histories, their strifes and striving. Please buy this and realize how oft are overlooked the true gems of poetry in a World run by buzz and pop commercialisms. A humanity kindred with me is what I find in this book, and a true poetic sensibility that rings the bells of a broken tower to swing "I know not where." Truly a good book. You can tell that Mitsios has worked to shape her voice into what I'd imagine is for no final song but intends a future of poetry from her likes that will continue to expand a vision both proud and visceral and fragile and wild. Five stars definitely.-Brittany Swenson & Dan DeMarse

Love how the two writers were able to capture so perfectly the beauty and magic of love. It was a delight to read but in no way simple. Their use of juxtapositions are brilliant to say the least. This book truly affirms the joy of being loved and in love.

To enjoy Kipling’s poetry you have to accept the convention of the ballad. You have to accept that not all poetry is sensitive and spiritual. Not all poetry is about the poet’s soul, or superior perceptions or feelings. Some poetry, and the ballad in particular, is designed to be objective, to tell stories about fictional characters, to have an immediate impact, to be closer in some ways to the short story; to tell a tale and impress moral messages. Kipling comes squarely out of this tradition, a tradition that goes back to the Border Ballads, to Percy’s reliques, via the long narrative poems of the 18th century which continued to be written in the Victorian period but, these days, are little read. 'The Seven Seas' is the most remarkable book of verse that Mr. Kipling has given us. Here the human sympathy is broader and deeper, the patriotism heartier and fuller, the intellectual and spiritual insight keener, the command of the literary vehicle more complete and sure, than in any previous verse-work by the author. The volume pulses with power—power often rough and reckless in expression, but invariably conveying the effect intended. There is scarcely a line which does not testify to the strong individuality of the writer."—London Globe.

Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Earlier I had given this book three stars and remarked, "The cockney lingo that makes up the narrative too difficult to read." And, "Outdated stuff and uses language derogatory to the natives. Paints a false picture of social conditions in India under the British rule. Many descriptions are too vague to understand." (July 7, 2013). But recently some one pointed out to me, that I am wrong. So I went through the book again and I found that I had written the review hurriedly. ( I had read a couple of books in succession and mislaid my attention). I do not want to be unfair to the great poet Rudyard Kipling. The book is a valuable contribution to the understanding of people. Sample: The Mother Lodge: Outside- "Sergeant! Sir! Salute! Salaam! Inside- "Brother," an' it doesn't do no 'arm. This is a book that would live for ever and enjoyable at every read.

Maram al-Masri here gives voice and presence to women, and some young boys, who are in one way or another mysterious to us - not just because they are 'other' but because they mainly live in a cultural community whose codes and conventions are opaque to Europeans. Mostly but not exclusively Muslim, many of the characters whose real or imagined lives she discloses endure in quiet desperation. Maram al-Masri's gift is to evoke these disparate lives with clarity, brevity and compassion. BAREFOOT SOULS is a chronicle of lives untold; it is also a negotiation between the known and the unknown, a generous service in poetry to our often surprising common humanity.

Marlee Lindell grows up in this chaotic and damaging environment, which leads to her developing feelings of inferiority and self-doubt, low self-esteem and insecurity. She knows that her only way out of this dysfunction is to leave and move far away from her mother, which she does and sort of manages to put her life in order. But will running away solve her problems or will they follow her everywhere she goes?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A brave story By Books R Best This book resonated for me since I had a similar relationship with my mother. The author points out so many similar responses to those I received and although many people might not really believe this is a true story, for me, it told the truth. There are mothers who do not love their children, they can only love themselves. The modern tendency to portray maternal feelings as an unwritten law have done irreparable harm to those who have had the misfortune to be born to mothers who suffer from narcissism. Lindell’s descriptions of her internal feeling, loss of self esteem and her inability to stand up for herself are the results of such a childhood. ‘If your own mother can’t love you, then who can?’ is a question many of us ask. I wish this author all the best for her future. I am giving it 4 stars not only for the author's courage in telling her story and for being one of those who is prepared to bring the secret of narcissism out of the closet.

I could not turn the pages. The reading format was not user friendly, I could not swipe the pages, for it had an arrow on the bottom that indicated "go further" and it jumped real fast..The arrow seemed to be similar to that when you open the volume. I had purchased a kindle book before and I could swipe the pages and knew exactly where I was this way.

It's left me with a plethora of mixed feelings, as I am so grateful to identify with someone else regarding this, yet slightly heartsick in accepting that this is indeed what's wrong with my mother, and there's nothing I can do about it.

A Stitch in Crime (A Hatti Lehtinen Mystery), by Ann Yost

Review Yost provides an entertaining combination of mystery and romance with a dose of Finnish tradition. Being the temporary police chief of Red Jacket, Michigan, is no sinecure. Hatti Lehtinen, separated from her lawyer husband, Jace Night Wind, is running a combination bait and knitting shop. When her stepfather is hospitalized, she takes on his job, never expecting a murder. The town, with its mostly Finnish heritage, is buzzing with preparations for Pikkujoulu, a pre-Christmas festival that may win them a stop on the Christmas train, which would be a welcome boost for the moribund local economy. Heading the effort is Hatti's stepfather's best friend, childless funeral director Arvo Maki, who has made a major mistake and several enemies by naming Liisa Pelonen, a beautiful young girl he and his wife took in, as the yearly parade's St. Lucy. When Liisa is found dead in the Makis' sauna, Hatti steps up to investigate. Suddenly Jace arrives on her doorstep, responding to a call from his grandfather Chief Joseph, who told him that his younger brother Reid had been involved with Liisa. Jace insists that Reid is innocent even though he has a record. Sparks fly as the estranged couple is forced to work together to prove Reid's innocence. Even though the doting Makis thought she was perfect, Liisa was far from popular. It turns out that she was pregnant, in line to inherit several million dollars and planning to leave Red Jacket. Given so many perfectly good motives for murder, Hatti has her hands full. Yost (For Better or Hearse, 2012) provides an entertaining combination of mystery and romance with a dose of Finnish tradition. --Kirkus ReviewThe Nordic background will appeal to those who enjoy Kathleen Ernst s Chloe Ellefson mysteries, which also concern Norwegian Americans.Hoping to increase tourism, the residents of Red Jacket, Michigan, on the Keweenaw Peninsula, are gearing up for the St. Lucy s Day parade and the Pikkujoulu (Little Christmas) festival, events designed to earn the town a stop on the Keweenaw Snow Train. When town father Arvo Maki picks his protégé, Liisa Pelonen, as this year s St. Lucy, bypassing the traditional method of choosing a young woman for the coveted position, he angers many in the town. When Liisa is found dead, acting police chief Hatti Lehtinen investigates. However, Hatti, owner of Bait & Stitch, the local fishing and knitting shop, is quickly out of her depth and enlists the aid of her sister, cousin, and good friend, along with her estranged husband, Jace Night Wind, whose half-brother is the prime suspect. Details of Finnish culture and small-town life frame Hatti s investigation, related in the first person. The Nordic background will appeal to those who enjoy Kathleen Ernst s Chloe Ellefson mysteries, which also concern Norwegian Americans. --Booklist Review

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "Most folks in the U.P. wear more than one hat." By Frosty Cold One Volumes of science fiction, fantasy, and non-fiction make up my usual literary diet, but I was pleased to depart for a new destination after I was given a copy of A Stitch in Crime. Almost immediately I was transported into a world so vastly different from mine, despite the story taking place in the same nation I call home. Perhaps because I have too few points of reference to draw upon, the atmosphere of Yost's book brought to mind Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon. Yet that comparison isn't apt, for although A Stitch in Crime has some cultural similarities (Finnish, not Norwegian!!) and also is bestowed with generous helpings of humor, a mystery hanging in the air is one factor that places this beyond Keillor's work.Skeptical by nature, at first I found it difficult to believe that the protagonist would find herself in the situation that allows the story to proceed. As pages turn, however, the premise seems more reasonable, and the mystery more difficult to solve as more characters are introduced. The protagonist is likable, and Yost adeptly breathes life into enough characters to charmingly populate the fabric of a community. Additionally, A Stitch in Crime provides insight one might not expect from a murder mystery; I venture to say that I learned a little anthropology while reading it. I've been to the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan, but as someone just passing through I hadn't given much more than a glance. This book brought me there more than my own memories of the UP do!Excerpt:He cursed, softly. "How can you stand living in this place? All these people do is make mountains out of molehills.""Priorities might look different, but they aren't, really. People are driven by a need to succeed, to provide support for their families, to keep them and the community strong.""Where does murder come into it?"That's a great question, and one that I won't answer here: you will need to get a copy of this book! I look forward to the next in the series, which I assume will be at least as well-written as this one. ❄As a side note, I found the print size in the hardcover edition to be perfect (I didn't even need to use my reading glasses).

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent light hearted mystery By Pat Dishman Excellent light hearted mystery. Love the characters! I usually can "guess" the ending and this one took me by surprise!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excited to have found a fresh and well-written mystery series! By Billie Little Yost is a master storyteller - keeping the reader engaged from start to finish-Her characters are likable and believable - and the mystery provided plenty of twists and turns -I'm a serial mystery reader- and I'll be waiting for the next Hattie mystery!

Free Ebook PDF Fixed: Dope sacks, dye packs, and the long welcome back, by Doug Piotter

Fixed is a darkly comedic memoir that spans my unsupervised youth, drug and alcohol addiction, bank robbery, life in prison and ultimately my release and re-entry into my life’s new and sober orbit. I grew up with alcoholic parents trapped inside their own lonely skins, a painful childhood full of cold shoulders and broken furniture. I burst onto the drug scene at age eleven and thrived before slowly finding out that it wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be. With addiction taking over and dictating my every move, I tried to make sense of it all while gathering five unwanted felonies along the way. At thirty-three, after a long string of bank robberies and my bad guy impersonation had run its course, I was brought back to life with the gift of prison and given the opportunity to experience a new childhood that I could have only imagined while growing up in Manville. Upon release, I learned that the universe is a kind and forgiving place, often strange and funny with plenty for everyone as long as I don’t forget where I came from.

Fixed: Dope sacks, dye packs, and the long welcome back, by Doug Piotter

Review "Piotter's snappy writing style, laid out across seventy-seven short chapters, draws the reader irresistibly into his world of junkies, hobos, and criminals of every kind. Strong characterization is key to Piotter's style. The portrait that emerges of his father is finely drawn, and the irreverent accounts of other prisoners' habits is often very funny. As an inspirational, cautionary tale, with plenty of black humor, this will hit the spot for many readers." Self-Publishing Review, 4 Stars

About the Author After two decades of reckless behavior, gripping drug addiction and petty crime evolving into bank robbery ended on the day he started a 115-month prison sentence in 1993. He has been clean and sober and crime-free ever since, a remarkable turnaround against long odds that such a change was possible. Upon his release, Piotter built a successful construction company and became an active member of his recovery community. He lives in Seattle with his wife, artist Terrell Lozada.

By TerryB I began reading the “Look Inside” version of Doug’s book on Amazon during my lunch break…once I had reached the end of that "free ride" [somewhere in mid-chapter 7], I was so engaged in his story that I immediately purchased the Kindle version and continued reading the book on my iPhone, undeterred by the fact that lunch break was far behind me and there were “work related” tasks to be attended to. I couldn’t stop reading – and by mid-afternoon I had found myself converting my laugh-out-loud reactions to some of Doug’s descriptions of his real life experiences into loud coughing fits so that my co-workers would not become suspicious about what I was up to…Doug is a grand story teller. He has an authentic voice, and he is honest and forthcoming about where he has been, and what he has learned on his journey through this life - I found his story relatable and compelling. I give this book an unabashed “two thumbs up”!

Doug tells it like it was and is and pulls no punches, doing so in direct, simple, honest and humorous ways. Personal journey from very difficult childhood to early horrific adulthood to prison purgatory and finally to personal redemption. The only thing better than reading Doug’s book is to hear him tell these stories in person. I have had that pleasure to hear his passionate, believable presentation. You must read this phenomenal, personal journey. You will be amazed and inspired by Doug.

The long road to being a model citizen By Kathy Rall Piotter’s book was a joy to read – The author’s stories of his child hood brought sadness about the family’s disfunction; his antics of early life brought giggles; his description of his “druggie” days brought disbelief at times; his stories of prison made me wonder at his survival. His road to sobriety, maturity and contribution to society now brought pride in a man who could really make it on the “outside”. His willingness to share his life in all of its colors makes this a must read for all of us.
