By Deborah Serravalle In her last novel, The Unraveling of Abbey Settel, author, Sylvia May, explored mid-life reinvention triggered by a move from Canada to the Southern U.S. In her latest work, Breathing Space, May again explores this theme; her characters are once again from Canada and the Southern States. This time, however, the disruption is self-inflicted.A Brief SynopsisWhen Lydia Burgess's painting workshop vacation on Hyde Island is over, rather than return to Toronto with her sister, Lydia opts to stay. Without warning, she abandons her business obligations, husband and grown daughter. Although Lydia claims she’s answering the coastal island’s mysterious call, it’s clear to the reader she’s running from her life.Lydia’s time on Hyde Island is a journey of self-discovery. Along the way she encounters a hippy biologist, a dashing southern “gentleman”, a sketchy boss, and an illegal Mexican hotel maid with a tragic history. During her stay on the island, Lydia makes some questionable choices and some outright bad ones. But for better or worse, she comes to realize the motivation behind her impulsive decision. My ThoughtsSylvia May’s writing is accessible. And by that, I mean her prose appears effortless. But don’t be fooled. The themes she explores and the characters she creates are anything but simple. In Breathing Space, Lydia is a complicated woman who makes bizarre choices. At times I struggled to like Lydia, given her lack of empathy for the people in her immediate circle. And, I was at times, frustrated by her lack of self-respect. Yet May’s portrayal of Lydia, a woman driven to extremes, raises issues and questions about family dynamics, expectations and our mental health and well-being. In the end, Lydia rises above her actions and claims her own identity. My Final WordBreathing Space is a well-written exploration of one woman’s quest of self-discovery that is well-worth the read. Published by Turquoise Morning Press, it is available in paperback and digital format at Amazon.com and Amazon.ca.

I know I’ve been in this situation and there can be many reasons. Not wanting to return to humdrum life, not happy at home, or simply wanting a breathing space from everyday life.As the title tells us, this book is about a breathing space for Lydia.Hyde Island has provided her with a glorious place to paint and get away from family and obligations in Toronto, but when it comes time to return, she refuses to go back. This woman is clever and resourceful and finds herself a job and a place to stay while she tries to decide where her future will lead her. Freedom is the feeling she experiences on the island, but she knows it can’t last forever.Lydia’s story pulled me gently into a soft relaxing time, with a little jolt every now and again to make me aware I had to think of the future too. All the way through the book I tried to guess if she would return to her life, start a completely new one or compromise. I got it wrong, but I’m not going to put in a spoiler. I definitely enjoyed this book and would be happy to read it again, or read another of Ms May’s stories. One last thing I must say is I loved the cover. It encompassed exactly what the book was about and drew my attention in before the opening words.originally posted at long and short reviews

This book belongs to all By snezana novakovic As an excellent reader of a woman's soul, Sylvia May knows how to penetrate into its deepest and most hidden corners. With a sincerity of her language and a great sense for flawless composition, she, AGAIN, gives us a tender story of a modern, almost visually present woman. Sylvia brings us closer to her, where-ever in a world she may be.I recommend this book equally to all readers--young and those who think they're not.
