From the Inside Flap When I awoke Sandie was standing over me, licking the blood off the floor. I was disoriented with a sharp pain coming from the back of my head. Looking up at the fire under the skillet and knowing that on my best day I couldn't get off of the floor, I knew I somehow had to get to a phone. I tried to push myself to a crawl position, yet I continued to slip on the blood. It wasn't working. Too weak to get up, I returned to my side, facing the stove. Sandie was practically on top of me. "Move it!" I shouted, as I swung my body to the right, my knees brushing against the kitchen island. In an awkward, jerking motion, I rolled onto my stomach. I'm not supposed to be alone at this point in my life, I thought. With my head balanced on my chin, stomach flat against the tile, and arms bent at my chest, I began moving my body in the direction of the office. With about as much grace as a wounded snake, I wiggled through the cramped space between the cabinets and the kitchen table. Barefoot, I was losing a little more skin on my toes with each push against the jagged uneven tile and felt my chin becoming raw. The thin jogging shorts I was wearing, combined with my tank top bunched up below my bra, made it feel as if I wasn't wearing anything. When I stopped to rest, the room felt like it was spinning. "God, I changed my mind. I'm not ready to die," I said as I rolled onto my side, placing my hands under my head, treating them like a pillow. For over twenty years--during my struggles with lupus--I had frequently wished to leave this life. However, as I watched my animals nervously pace the room, I wanted nothing but to stay.

Informative By Amazon Customer If this were a book of fiction I would be very disappointed in the characters and probably wouldn’t even like them very much. Instead this is the true story of one woman’s struggles dealing with the devastating disease of lupus. It is a very sad story as well as an eye opening one because I hadn’t realized how debilitating lupus can be to one’s life. The author writes about her life before and after the diagnosis, the people in her life who essentially become her caregivers, such as her daughters, and how she finally came to accept her illness. I saw myself in her a lot as I’ve also had a life altering illness, but it was the way that she constantly saw herself as the victim and how she treated others that made this book very hard to read. When one boyfriend informs her off his cancer diagnosis early on in the book, it seems as if she is much more concerned about how it will impact her life and not how he is dealing with the information. It’s things like this that makes this book one more about how not to act rather than how to deal with illness. I do like the style of writing. It’s fast and easy to read and the author writes with a nice flow. There are personal photos included which make it enjoyable to put faces with names in the book. I did enjoy reading this as it did leave me much more aware of how horrible lupus is as a disease. I read this in digital format and it worked well on my ereader, including very clear pictures. The cover is very eye-catching and lends a personal touch to the book.

This was no ordinary book, it was a memoir of Cheryl Miguel; a woman who endured everything that life threw at her. She was indeed, a very strong woman and for that I adored her. She was diagnosed with lupus and she had been struggling with it for over twenty years. She was a successful accountant who worked at a prestigious firm and somehow after some time, everything changed. She cant work like before because of her health condition. Dave was a character that I really liked. He did not leave Cheryl when everything shifted. This was a man who did not have any connection with Cheryl other than the fact that they lived together, they were not married and they didnt have any child together but he stayed regardless. What he did was wrong but I did not blame him or Cheryl, they have gone through enough. Cheryl experienced so many losses, one after another but she never gave up on life even on the day that she cant even get up from the chair by herself. This was a memoir that helped me to be grateful for everything even the smallest one. I will always pray for your health, Cheryl.

One that reminds me to appreciate the small things in life. The memoir has several sad moments, but becomes more uplifting as the author continues to tell her story. After so many losses and negativity in her life, Cheryl leans on spiritual guidance and self-books to get her life back in order. Miguel uses such powerful words in her writing that I felt for her while reading.A 5-star book and highly recommended to those who like memoirs about people trying to overcome life's obstacles.
