By Greg Bossert Hightower's ideas here are startling, sometimes lovely, sometimes devastating, always wise, deeply rooted in biblical stories and characters but always aware of those story's context in our contemporary world (and in that very much contemporary, not a rehashing of ideas from the last century), but most of all her voice is mature, fully developed, and her language is extraordinary: clear, precise, lyric, haunting. "yet I push my way through voices/hair gathered and ready/only to find you scribbling in the sand/rewriting the story./The one they never get right."

As a recovering Catholic who never recovered, and as a feminist, I revisited the pain and discomfort of embracing a faith that held no place for me as I began reading the author's poetry; yet as I continued, my breath deepened and my back straightened as I relished the retelling of biblical stories through a feminist lens.Hightower's work places us in discomfort so that we can shift our perspective and view old tales through new eyes. I smiled as I was reminded of Anne Sexton's Transformations. This is a brave work that took incredible grit and strength to write. I will read it again, and yet again.

Cinematic imagery, emotional resonance, and character depth transform its retelling of Bible stories into supremely human events, making the mind play, think, re-order, and re-imagine. It's a brief collection but that doesn't diminish its heft one bit. If anything it enhances it, because each poem is so precisely written there's no room for the mind to aimlessly wander; no time wasted having to re-focus oneself on its theme. Whether you read the Bible as myth or tract, this book will enhance your appreciation. When you get a line like this about the weaknesses of Samson and Solomon: "Kingdoms crumpled around them / as they clamored for one last kiss" you are in a good place to nurture your spirit.
