10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A nice rainy day read By Margaret Lake M. Hector Ratichon is an attorney/detective/forger/thief, or whatever is required, in post-Napoleonic France. The story is told in first person and is written as a memoir of his adventures, or more likely, misadventures. Ratichon is a self-styled confidant of kings and emperors. He often has his over-sensitive heart (his own description) taken advantage of by his rogue of a clerk, Theodore, as well as any pretty woman with a sad tale who dangles hope of a fortune in front of him.The prose is old-fashioned, but fits with the era in which the book was written and Hector's own personality. There are many amusing bits and a few laugh-out-loud moments. This is not a romance novel, nor is it an action-adventure novel. Don't look for anything heart-stopping or pulse-pounding. Just curl up on the sofa with this one, and let Hector give you a few chuckles.
