Outstanding book that I can't stop recommending By Jessica Lux I put off other things on my weekend to finish this book because I was so involved in it, and I've been recommending it to other readers since finishing it. This book was more beautiful to me than The Joy Luck Club, but it took me a little longer to get into the book and realize how amazing it was.The plot is summarized well on Amazon. While reading, I had a little trouble getting into Kwan's Miss Banner previous-lifetime stories. I, like Olivia, thought Kwan was a kooky dreamer. Of course, her stories have a deeper meaning, and I urge you to stick with them so see Tan's beautiful resolution of the relationship between Olivia and Kwan.In the beginning of the book, I thought Olivia knew herself the best, and that Kwan was just an overly-emotional meddler. As the book progressed, Tan convined me of the depth of Kawn's character, and my feelings about everyone in the novel changed. Tan is a masterful storyteller for taking me in this journey of discovery. This history of China is well-treated in this novel, and I wanted to learn more about the Taiping Rebellion when I finished. Don't be put off if you don't like historical fiction, though, because I'm not usually a fan, but I found myself entirely wrapped up in this.

And I really enjoyed KITCHEN GOD'S WIFE which is an excellent example of telling a story. However with THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES, Amy Tan is aiming at a higher target and is taking a more honest look at herself, at people, at life and at the spiritual nature of humankind than previously. That she sometimes struggles to achieve her aims (and for sure this book is not as smoothly written as JOY LUCK CLUB) and that there are a few areas that could be strengthened, does not give me enough reason to lower my rating of this novel -- for she does what few writers ever do and reaches out for the truth of existence. She has gone from an excellent writer to a special writer, and in doing so enters into a very select group of American writers. In reading THE HUNDERED SECRET SENSES, I wondered if Amy Tan had read any of Philip K Dick's later novels, for I know of no other American author that was so willing to honestly grapple with existential material with such aggressiveness and sensitivity. Forty years from now we may look at this novel as a turning point in Amy Tan's career. She has shown now that she has both the technique as well as the vision to be one of the most important novelists of our time. The Hundred Secret Senses rises above the limits of both THE BAY AREA culture and AMERICAN culture into the realm of serious observation and representation.

Sisters ~ Past and Present By Kelly Budd The Hundred Secret Senses starts off very simply, the story of sisters reuniting from extremely different cultures. The sisters are Olivia and Kwan, born of the same father, neither knew each other until Kwan arrives in America as the last dying wish of their father. So the tale begins...The reader will journey with Kwan through many past lives and her communications to 'yin people'. The yin people are those that have died and communicate to her ~ ghosts. The ever reserved and practical Olivia, finds Kwan's behaviour and beliefs odd and unbelievable. The Hundred Secret Senses follows the lives of Olivia and Kwan as they create and define their relationship. It is the story of coming to terms with ones self, as well as accepting those around you for who they are. The reader will participate in the great struggle that Olivia has with this challenge. The reader will be challenged to question their own beliefs of the yin people or the afterlife. I only recently discovered Amy Tan and The Hundred Secret Senses is equally as brilliant as The Bonesetters Daughter. I would recommend this novel!

“The Greatest War Story of All – Takes rank with All Quiet on the Western Front. She fulfilled in every respect the conditions which made the terrible profession of a spy dignified and honourable. Dwelling behind the German line within sound of cannon, she continually obtained and sent information of the highest importance to the British Intelligence Authorities. Her tale is a thrilling one … the main description of her life and intrigues and adventures is undoubtedly authentic. I was unable to stop reading it until 4 a.m.”Winston Churchill 1932With her medical studies cut short by the 1914 German invasion, her house burned down and her father arrested for suspected‘sharpshooting’, it was perhaps unsurprising that the multi-lingual Marthe Mckenna (née Cnockaert, codename ‘Laura’) was recruited by British Intelligence. At the time she worked as a nurse tending the wounds of occupying soldiers, and as a waitress in her parents’ café in the Belgian border town of Roulers. I Was a Spy! is McKenna’s vivid narrative of these breath-taking adventures as she, aided by a gallant band of loyal locals, goes undercover to sabotage enemy phone lines, report suspicious activity or train movements, and even instigate an aerial attack on a planned visit by the Kaiser. This thrilling account goes on to explain how, in 1916, the young nurse was caught by the Germans placing dynamite in a disused sewer tunnel underneath an ammunition dump. She was sentenced to the firing squad and only survived due to the Iron Cross honour received as a result of her earlier medical service . Mckenna was later mentioned by Douglas Haig in British Despatches and was awarded the French and Belgian Orders of the Legion of Honour for her espionage work.REVIEWS Straight out of Boys' Own Paper! I Was a Spy!: The Classic Account of Behind-the-Lines Espionage in the First World War, by Marthe McKenna

About the Author In addition to receiving the Iron Cross from the Germans for her wartime contribution as a nurse, Marthe Mckenna (née Cnockaert, codename ‘Laura’) was later mentioned by Douglas Haig in British Despatches and was awarded the French and Belgian Orders of the Legion of Honour for her espionage work. I Was A Spy! was first published in 1932 with an extended Foreword by Winston Churchill and was made into a film in 1933 directed by Victor Saville and starring Madeleine Carroll. The success of the book encouraged Marthe to write further memoirs of her wartime exploits, and those of her small band of fellow spies, and also led to a series of espionage novels written in collaboration with her British husband John “Jock” McKenna.

Move Over James Bond By RachelB Marthe Cnockaert is a twentyish Belgian medical student in 1914 when the Germans come pounding across the Belgian border. Like most educated young people of this generation, Marthe sees her life crumbling in front of her face when the Germans haul her father away as a suspected sharpshooter and they set fire to her house. Marthe and her mother bravely go about rebuilding their lives which includes Marthe getting a job tending to wounded German and Allied soldiers in a makeshift triage hospital in the town of Roulers, and she probably would have finished the war as a dedicated nurse if her life didn't take an enormous turn. Marthe is enlisted as a spy by the British and told to report on train movements and any suspicious activity. Using enormous courage and gumption, Marthe goes undercover to sabotage enemy phone lines and conduct counter-espionage endeavors. With rich detail and flowing narration, Ms. McKenna provides a rare glimpse behind the lines, to the lives and losses of ordinary Belgians under the most trying of circumstances. When Marthe is caught, her very existance hovers between life and the firing squad. Above all, "I Was a Spy" is enormously entertaining, a heart-pounding glimpse of ordinary citizens fighting incredible odds, a portrait of courage under fire.

By DA Henneman It is hard to imagine what our ancestors went through as they struggled to grasp the freedoms that we, at times, take for granted. Judy Oberstein Bobrow’s book “Carrying On,” eloquently describes the path her family members took towards building their new future in America, and does a fantastic job of pulling the reader into her past. Her relations are given a unique opportunity to speak to their descendants through quotes, letters and touching stories, and the book is pieced together lovingly with photographs from both sides of Judy’s family tree. This book is not only a gift to the future generations of Judy’s family, but to anyone who has the pleasure of reading it. I highly recommend it to anyone considering writing the history of their own family.

When a mortifying defeat to his teenage son rekindles his lifelong passion for table tennis, keen philosopher Guido Mina di Sospiro sets out to learn the game properly.

Guido's love for spinning a feather-weight ball takes him from his local Ping-Pong club, populated by idiosyncratic players with extraordinary stories to tell, to training drills with a world-class coach. This seemingly harmless game also leads him into sticky situations in the CIA headquarters and the ganglands of Washington, D.C. Woven throughout his Ping-Pong epiphany are philosophical ruminations on Plato and Aristotle, metaphysicians and empiricists, Jung's dark shadow, Sun Tzu's war tactics, the I Ching, and much more.

As Guido's journey takes him from Big Sur to a nail-biting showdown in China against a string of elite players, he finds that Ping-Pong can teach us a surprising amount about life.

The Metaphysics of Ping-Pong: Table Tennis as a Journey of Self-Discovery, by Guido Mina di Sospiro

Review "An enthralling guide to the mystery, mastery and practice of Ping Pong." --Eric Idle, from Monty Python"The Metaphysics of Ping-Pong is another wonderful work from Mina di Sospiro. Examining the cosmos through the lens of table tennis provides an unexpected tour de force that cannot be pigeonholed. The Metaphysics of Ping-Pong is one of the most accessible books ever featured on this program, all while maintaining the loftiest of conversations with the reader. This tale of initiation and Perennial Philosophy is rather refreshing." --Greg Kaminsky, 'Occult of Personality'"The sports metaphor is a tired cliché, right? Well, if that's the case, maybe being a cliché isn't so bad. Actually, sports seem to be growing in rhetorical stature; more so than ever they are used as a microcosm for examining the larger struggles of life. Possibly the most zany entry into the sport-as-microcosm category is Guido Mina di Sospiro's The Metaphysics of Ping-Pong. "There are two breeds of Ping-Pong players: empiricists and metaphysicians," he writes. "By adopting anti-spin paddles, empiricists declare explicitly who they are and what they stand for. Metaphysicians, on the other hand, are fascinated by the mysteries of spin." This is the world of TT (table tennis) for di Sospiro. What many Americans see as a basement game, he sees as an embodiment of competing philosophical views. This isn't you versus your little brother; this is Plato versus Aristotle. What makes di Sospiros's outlandish claims palatable, even refreshing, is his bizarre way of telling the story. Coming to the sport in middle age, di Sospiro delves into the history of TT--a slow transition toward a sport dominated by spin. As this history unfolds in di Sospiro's telling we also come to know a multicultural world of players who hang around community centers and bonafide Ping-Pong clubs throughout the D.C and L.A. areas. Di Sospiro discusses the Tao with the Chinese players--as he admires their technique. He takes impromptu lessons from a Dominican pro. He contemplates a mind-twisting Sufi parable with a Lebanese stranger. The list of characters he encounters, each imparting a bit more wisdom than the last, leads di Sospiro on a personal journey that will end up forcing him to reconsider past actions and refocus his mission in life. He is just as likely to quote Sheryl Crow as analyze the work of Carl Jung. Or shout the name of his favorite paddle: Kokutaku Blutenkirsche! When you're done, you just might order a Kokutaku yourself." --Seth Satterlee, Publishers Weekly"At first blush, readers might wonder just how the game of ping pong can be related to the metaphysical enterprise. But di Sospiro sees in the question "to spin or not to spin" a deeply spiritual quest for understanding of the self and of one's place in the larger philosophical search for meaning and understanding. The author acknowledges no borders-- the I Ching takes its place alongside Plato in the rich tapestry of esoterica laid out here. Readers will be fascinated by di Sospiro's growing passion for the game of ping pong as he challenges remarkable players who offer him both stiff competition and an opportunity to grow in self-understanding. Breezily written, not for the scholar but for the layperson, this excellent work can constitute a perfect introduction to the vast history of humankind's quest for philosophical clarity. And where else can you find Sheryl Crow, Carl Jung, and Google mentioned side by side? Readers wanting to experience the broad flow of philosophical exploration will find this to be a gold mine." --Publisher's Weekly (Sept. 2015)"A fast-footed, inspiring book about winning the inner game of life in sport." --Iain Finlayson, The Times"Like nothing I've ever read and all the more wonderful because of it, this is a non-fiction masterpiece which deserves a position on the sports writing podium." --Ben Keenan, Press Association Syndication"Erudite, experimental and engaging, Mina di Sospiro has given us a work that breaks new ground. Whether or not you ever pick up a paddle, The Metaphysics of Ping-Pong provides an initiation into a visionary life, igniting the fires of inspiration through an intriguing intimacy with the mysteries of daily life that is available nowhere else." --David Metcalfe, The Daily Grail

While that seems to be a well-worn cliché, but this book by Guido Mina di Sospiro proves that sometimes clichés are correct. In his case, the sport of ping-pong, or table tennis, was an accurate reflection of his life. His writing about the sport waxes poetic and philosophical, pop culture and religion. Drawing inspiration and information from sources as varied as Plato, Taoism, Sheryl Crow and Carl Jung, Mina di Sospiro takes the reader on an adventure through the world of ping-pong as he competes against players all over the world – from his local club to facing some of the best players in China. While the main attraction of the book is certainly his adventure, his writing about the sport itself was what I found very interesting. His discovery of the spin on the ball being the key to winning or losing makes for some of the best reading for me in the book. The spin is how metaphysics plays an important role in the sport. How the player has to strike the ball to put this spin on the shot, what rubber and padding should be on the paddle to maximize this effect is explained in great detail as Mina di Sospiro is working his way through the competition. Even the glue is important as he explains that many players will rib the rubber padding off and re-glue it onto the paddle just before a match (allowing 20-30 minutes for drying) to expand the rubber which allows for greater speed and spin. This book should be read at one sitting with minimal interruptions to get a true feel for the game and also for the spirituality of the writing. By doing this, I was able to enjoy the stories and ended up becoming a fan of the author and the sport by the time I finished. This book is highly recommended for readers who want to either learn something about an off-beat sport, to be inspired or just enjoy a good book with a different spin.I wish to thank Quest Books for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Ping Pong Teaches Us Life Lessons By Sheryl Glick, RMT, host of Healing from Within Guido Mina di Sospiro shows us how his love for the game of ping-pong is the platform for the journey of the soul and the quest for philosophical clarity leading to well being, peace, balance and a greater state of self-love and love for others. As Guido describes two types of players: Empiricists and Metaphysicians, we realize this humble game is a metaphor for understanding the entire human condition with a way to achieve better relationships, and positivity in all aspects of our daily life. READ THIS BOOK to learn about the basic technique of extraordinary ping-pong players and the effort that they expend in learning to play well. Guido guides us to understand there is an interconnectedness to other players and a need to seek a friend or teacher in order to take your playing to a higher level. Eventually the student comes to realize "The ultimate teacher resides in their own heart." Guido shares his love for table tennis, which like all love, is a passion for understanding life and living it in a most ethical and moral way so we may become the heroes of our own life journey.

The authors's experiences with other players and those willing to teach him the game are both entertaining and enlightening. Its a fascinating tour through the game with not only a perspective on the game as a player but, also, an examination of the game from both a physical and metaphysical point of view.

Considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, Ty Cobb cast a shadow over the game with his violent behavior on the field and off. His shadow was never darker than when it fell on his teammates. Sam Crawford, Harry Heilmann and Heinie Manush were three of the greatest players in baseball history, good enough to be in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Each played in the Detroit outfield alongside Cobb, though their fame never reached the level of his.

Little is remembered about this trio of Hall of Famers. Crawford, the all-time triples leader, Heilmann, the last right-handed batter to hit .400, and Manush, another batting champion, each made his own mark on the game, detailed for the first time in this triple biography.

I Had Hoped For Something Better By Bill Emblom Author Dan D'Addona has done a commendable job in reviewing the careers of Sam Crawford, Harry Heilmann, and Heinie Manush of the Detroit Tigers. The text is 202 pages long and is divided as follows: Sam Crawford--Page 3 through 123 Harry Heilmann--Page 125 through 168 Heinie Manush--Page169 through 202I do not quibble with the facts the author presents. However, the book is mainly a season-by-season review of games played loaded with individual play-by-play as to who went 2 for 4 and the final score of games. This, to me, is not a story of each player. Rather, it is a review of the seasons of the Detroit Tigers in which each of these players took part. The author also relies on newspaper accounts of games and a heavy emphasis on statistics. The part I found to be the most interesting was reading about the broadcasting career of Harry Heilmann with the Tigers once his playing career was over, The author summarizes as to why each player has been largely forgotten by today's fans.If you want to review the seasons each of these hall-of-fame players took part then I am sure you enjoy the book. However, if you are looking for a story of each of these players then you won't find it in this book.

Terry Lindley Over the last two decades McFarland Publishers (www.mcfarlandpub.com) have printed scores of books on various sports, but especially baseball. Dan D’Addona’s triple biography of three long forgotten players—Sam Crawford, Harry Heilmann, and Heinie Manush—is a welcomed addition to McFarland’s inventory. The book’s premise is that anyone who played with Ty Cobb, one of the greatest to ever play the game, would be overshadowed no matter what they did. Sam Crawford holds two career records that will probably never be broken, triples and inside-the-park homeruns. Harry Heilmann won four batting championships, all with averages of .393 or better. The only other players to have four years of averages of .390 or better were Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby. Heinie Manush won one batting title, helped the Washington Senators reach their third and last World Series in 1933, and is one of 30 players with a lifetime average of .330 or better. Despite the achievements of Crawford, Heilmann, and Manush, Cob is remembered today; they are not.D’Addona traces the history of each player from birth through their careers, especially those with the Detroit Tigers, and then follows their lives after their playing days ended. While Crawford and Manush came from small towns, Heilmann was the first star to reach the major leagues from the San Francisco Bay area, which would later produce the DiMaggio brothers. Each man stayed tied to the game after their careers in the big leagues came to a close. Crawford played four years in the Pacific Coast League and then umpired there for another four years; Heilmann had a 17-year career broadcasting Tiger games; and Manush bounced around the minor leagues for six years and in the 1950s became a scout and coach for the Washington Senators. The author presents an in-depth look at each man’s playing careers, occasionally giving too much detail. The 1907, 1908, and 1909 seasons when Cobb and Crawford led the Tigers to consecutive World Series often reads like a string of box scores. If you like to follow the day-to-day unfolding of a championship season, you will enjoy these chapters. However, if you like a broad overview of a season that focus on highlights and key games, you will appreciate the sections on Heilmann and Manush, which are not as detailed and make for a better read. The relationship between Cobb and Crawford is interesting. When Cobb was a rookie, Crawford showed him the proper way to play the outfield, an action greatly appreciated by the Georgia Peach. Yet, the next year Cobb accused Crawford of being one of the parties that sawed his specially made bats in half, a rookie prank not accepted by an angry Cobb. However, when Cobb was indefinitely suspended for going into the stands to fight a heckler, Crawford was among the Tigers who staged a one-game protest over the suspension. And it was Cobb who campaigned behind the scenes to get Crawford elected to the Hall of Fame. I wish that the author had explored this complex association more fully. There are some stylistic problems with this book. First, the author overuses long bloc quotations. There are almost twenty that are a half page or longer, one of which is nearly two pages. Many of these quotes could have been paraphrased using much shorter quotes within. Second, the author is constantly using the phrase “future Hall of Famer” in introducing pitchers faced by the Crawford, Heilmann, and Manush, but then continues to use the phrase when mentioning the same pitchers later in the text. Lastly, the author writes that President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany after German submarines sank two American submarines in international waters. The U.S. vessels sunk were actually merchant ships. Despites these problems, the author is to be congratulated for bringing to print the lives and careers of three of the all-time greats of the game of baseball.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. the story of three men who played in the shadow of the great Ty Cobb By Kevin Larkin The title of the book says it all, the story of three men who played in the shadow of the great Ty Cobb. Each of these men in his own right was a superstar and baseball is no different from any other sport. If you play with better players you will be a better player yourself. This is true in this case as well. Any combination of these men could be considered one of the greatest outfields of all time. The author has done a great job reviewing the careers of the men involved as they relate to Cobb. Having just finished this book I can say it took me back in time to a day when baseball as a game was more important than baseball as a business. A great job sir and I will recommend it to my friends!!!!!!

By DENISE I am not an avid book reader, and I can count on one hand how many books I have read from cover to cover, and this one I have read twice! I felt like the author and I had a mirrored life, as many of the things she wrote about, could have been a story about my life too. The chapter about her late husband, David touched my heart, as I too lost a dear Mother years ago to cancer, however, at the end it was just the same as she wrote about David. I cried my eyes out, as her story took me back to that day. Then later the story about her son, Cory, because I too almost lost my son to an accident. So many memories, so much hurt, but people come from all over to bring their support, when you need it the most. Again, I cried my eyes out, for her, and for my own son. Both of us reaching out to God for help, and asking him for a miracle.Sharon shared her most inter thoughts and feelings with us all, that she herself said she had been keeping tucked away in a folder for years. This girl can write, and I hope she continues to share with us, her life time of memories and stories, as I for one am looking forward to her next book, as I'm sure there will be something there just for me! If you don't read another book this year, please read this one-you'll LOVE IT!

She gives us little interjections of humor along the way, but it is a book that offers encouragement. Her writing style brings the reader by her side in each story and makes it clear that, as Christians, we are not exempt from difficulties in life; however, it is our faith in Christ that gets us through the storm and guides us to a brighter day.I see it as a window to allow non-believers to walk in her shoes and, perhaps, have a glimpse of how faith makes all the difference and feel a desire for what she has. I also see it as spiritual boost for Christians to remember to walk with Him every single day—even those days when we try to take over and make all of the decisions and do it our own way. That’s when we need to be reminded to turn it all over to Him…leave it at the cross. The personal journey of Sharon Roberts, as referenced in this book, reminds us that God does have a plan for us if we will only be still and listen. Once we do, the peace that follows is the affirmation that floods our grateful souls.I hope that Sharon Roberts will be blessing us with more of her writing!

By Joyce Putnam Eblen I have just finished reading this book a second time. There will probably be a third, and then some after that. Sharon writes so clearly and beautifully about the events of her life that you feel that you were there when they happened. (Although I have never raised alpacas, I wanted to buy some after reading her story about them!) Sharon also deals sensitively and compassionately with the tough issues of life and the questions we often have about why things happen as they do. This is a book to savor, to treasure, and to keep.

What I really enjoyed about this poetry collection is her ability to express her frustration, sorrows, and violent situations, in a way that is not sugar coated. It denotes the courage and strength that lies behinds the curves of a woman. It shows we are capable of smile our scars away, to bleed almost until we are left dead and yet wake up the next day to a standing woman instead of a corpse. It's a book you need to read at least twice. Angela did an amazing job capturing how love and deception can build us. I am defintely not a place for cowards! Lovely work!

My father was an immigrant from Italy. He came to America and had a hard beginning. However, he was a proud man and would never take any kind of abuse, either verbal or physical from anyone. As an Italian, he was treated poorly on job places and usually quit the same day after attacking his supervisor. I was the only person in our Italian family who was intrigued by some of my father's stories, and it was therefore the reason why I began interviewing him as often as I could to gather information about his life. I told him that I wanted nothing but the truth, and he agreed that the information I would gather would be the absolute truth. My family was intrigued by how I put his story in an understandable chronology of events, and it was they who told me that I should put the information in book form. My friends who read my manuscript said that once they started to read the book, they couldn't put it down.

'Hoboken, the Land of Plenty', by Robert Berry (Bobby)

About the Author I was born during the Depression. My mother was a very sick woman from the time of my birth in 1932. She was unable to care for me, so I was living in the home of another family, who raised me as their own. After graduating from high school, I got married at an early age, and the Korean War was going strong, which made me eligible for the draft. Rather than be drafted into the army, I joined the U.S. Air Force, where I made a twenty-seven-year career. I made the big show in Vietnam, where I was awarded the Bronze Star. I encountered a close-rocket explosion while there, which created hearing and balance problems. I was also exposed to a deadly spray called Agent Orange. As a result of this exposure, I eventually developed diabetes and prostate cancer, rendering me a 100 percent disabled veteran several years after my discharge. During my twenty-seven years of service, I attended universities for numerous years and obtained my college degree. I am the father of a daughter and two sons. I have eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. At eighty-three years old, I have much to be thankful for and appreciate every day when I can get out of bed and live life to its fullest.

SUNSET OVER JAVA is the story of a boy whose life was radically changed in the prison camps on Java during World War II. Not all of his family survived. After the Japanese surrender in 1945, he expected to be re-united with his family and to return home. Instead, he found that a violent Indonesia Revolution was taking hold. The murders of numerous camp survivors forced the evacuation of all Dutch civilians. As a result, he and his family experienced the sunset of their way of life on Java. His interrupted education and the patchwork of schooling in Holland and Washington, DC, resulted in poor grades and caused him to reject all thoughts of going to college. A stint in the US Army began his personal turnaround. With the help of family and new friends, good fortune, and determination to make up for lost years, he was surprised to find himself at Harvard at age 23.

It is the true story of a young Dutch boy and his family who were held captive by the Japanese during World War II on the island of Java. The family was ripped apart and sent to separate prison camps where they endured illness and near starvation before being released in August 1945.This is an historical account of tragedy and loss during WW II, but it is also a riveting story of amazing strength, triumph and victory that is well worth reading.

The details of the war's history in that part of the world was somewhat new to me and that, combined with how the author survived and then thrived in his life after concentration camps, the loss of his mother, interrupted education, etc. was truly remarkable and inspirational. Great photos and drawings that bring his experience to life. Highly recommended.

Excellent Read By Kenneth R.Samuelson Jack de Vries' life journey described so well in Sunset Over Java, is one of good times for awhile, sudden devastating changes during WW II, despair and survival. His inspiring story is one of overcoming unusual obstacles and eventual success in a Wall Street career. I recommend it especially for those interested in a part of WW II history in the Dutch East Indies that is sometimes overlooked. Ken Samuelson.

By A Customer I recently bought this "Literary Classics" edition of "The Diaries of Adam & Eve" expecting it to be the text of the wonderful audiobook version of Twain's stories, as read by Betty Buckley and Mandy Patinkin, only to find that it is not the same at all. This version is just a replica of the original books and does not include the full text as heard on the audiobook. Then I found the version I wanted, subtitled "Translated by Mark Twain" and it, like the audiobook version, is really something special. To anyone interested in these wonderful "first family" stories, I recommend searching for the Fair Oaks Press edition.

23 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Short, Funny and Original By Jeffrey Wolf Apparently this version of the text is not the expanded version. I recommend getting the expanded edition ('translated' by Mark Twain). But if you get this one, here's what I think:Retelling the famous story of Adam and Eve is always an exciting venture. There are so many cultural, religious and political overtones to the original story (or stories?) in the Bible that any retelling is bound to spark contention.Milton's Paradise Lost is a great example of this. Even better are the stories by the long forgotten Gnostic Christians (See Elaine Pagels) who thought that the serpent was the hero of the story.Twain has his own take on the matter. Adam is a boring, conceited man (at first) who is annoyed by Eve and her curiosity about everything. Eve is wonderful; she names everything (like Adam in the original story) and has an abundance of scientific wonder of the world. The only thing odd in this story was its avoidance of the temptation of Eve by the serpent--it was only mentioned in passing. Personally, I find that the most interesting part (see Milton) and i would haved loved to see Twain's thoughts on it.Nevertheless, this is a short, funny (isn't Twain always?) and lively book that you can get through in an hour. If for no other reason, read it for its redemption of Eve from the sexist (and confusing) story of the OT.

The genius that was Twain's is in abundant evidence here. And there is no longer version, this is it. Twain only wrote "extracts from" to make it seem more believable. Notice the "translated" also? I own the PBS version with David and Meredith Baxter Birney and have watched it many times, but I still laughed out loud when I finally got around to reading this short little gem. And the illustrations are at least half of the fun. I suspect this can re-read many times, especially when one is in need of a pick-me-up. Because, as always with Twain, much wisdom is interspersed with the humor. And beautifully written passages as well. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!!

The tale of Moth and Flame, a fantasy relationship ill-fated from its start, is told through poetry and whimsical ink paintings by educator, psychologist, author Anita Rosenfield and her alter ego/illustrator Teeta Hecker. Wooed by Flame, and aware of the danger, Moth undertakes a journey of fiery passion, closeness, and warmth, followed by separation, loss, searching, and despair. She soars above trees, and plunges into the depths; she rises and finds calm, she is tossed by storms. She seeks her love while she seeks her self. Though their liaison is doomed to self-destruct, will Moth survive the fires of Flame’s passion?

Flame: a cautionary tale, by Anita Rosenfield

About the Author Anita Rosenfield has written poetry since she first held a crayon in her hand. Early pieces usually began with “Roses are red, violets are blue” and proceeded with some homage to her parents or her brother Larry. By age seven, she began to write more meaningful, in-depth verses. Over the years she also co-wrote poetry with her mother, who began writing in childhood as well.Anita took a 17-year hiatus from education. During that period, she ran The Scholar Coffeehouse in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Then, in 1965, she left Minnesota and moved to Miami Beach, Florida, where she became a legal secretary. Four years later, her heart led her to Los Angeles, California where she continued her career as legal secretary/paralegal and later office administrator at a Los Angeles law school. In 1980, Anita decided it was time to return to college to get her B.A. An M.A. and then Ph.D. in social/developmental psychology followed. During her Masters program at California State University, Los Angeles, she began teaching at the college level, which she continued to do for twenty years. Poetry was a diversion, while professionally, in addition to teaching, Anita worked as an editor and also prepared numerous supplemental materials for academic publishers, primarily in the field of psychology. In 2001, after 32 years in the Los Angeles area, Anita moved to the exquisite red rocks of Sedona, Arizona. Here she has found a community of nurturing, highly intelligent, creative friends. She continued teaching and writing professionally for several years until she decided to retire. After settling in Sedona, Anita focused her attention on family (especially overseeing the care of her aging mother, who passed away at age 97 in 2010), community, art, and poetry. Reconnecting with someone she knew years ago prompted her to write Flame. She is currently focused on a new book of poetry and other spiritual writings. She anticipates that endeavor will be completed in a year or two—as the spirit moves.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A touching, inspiring set of heartfelt poems and pictures By Paul Friedman Flame is overall, as its title suggests, a "cautionary tale." And it is many other stories, as well. Nearly every page of poetry tells a story. It starts with the author in one frame of mind, and it describes her evolution upward, downward or outward from that point. And each page carries an implication for how each of us experiences hope, desire for absorption, rescue, bliss, or even salvation through love. Clearly, these 30 poems are somewhat autobiographical. But the story each tells is one that almost everyone with a yearning heart can relate to.Accompanying each of these poems is an illustration that expresses the essence of the experience described in words. The illustrations are as clear, vivid, and moving as the poems. Each does so in a few powerful brushstrokes--just the right number with just the right color, shape, and intensity. One can read the book as a story told in poems, or as a story told in images. In other words, the poems can just as easily be read as illustrations in words of the drawings that accompany them, as vice-versa. They exist as complementary expressions of the human soul, or each approach to self-expression can be relished independently. In short, this is a very moving, heart-stirring book that would be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds, as long as they have known personally, at some time in their life, the passion that their innate desire to love and be loved evokes. Highly recommended.

Poems for Sharing By Barbara Sinor, Ph.D. As I entered the sacred space to read the words found in Flame: A Cautionary Tale, I had no idea the impact they would have on my being. The words stayed within my consciousness well into the evening. My eyes searched for the words over and over as my mind fell open to their personal meaning. Each page became a reminder of my own life’s pursuit of romantic and self love. Each line consumed as I re-read it several times to squeeze the profundity of its placement within the whole. True poetry evokes a sense of sensuality in its reader… the poems within Flame accomplish this goal. May it ignite a passion within each of its readers and be cherished throughout time.Dr. Barbara Sinor, author of seven books including The Pact: Messages from the Other Side

Review "5+ stars... Desert Island Keeper...Hot Head is a book you will want to savour...a plot that grips you and makes your stomach ache... an unforgettable story... gritty... raw... delicious... I felt as if I was living this story rather than reading it. Highly recommended." (Reviews at Jessewave) "Up front, this is one of the best M/M romances I have read lately... It had that level of romanticism that makes your heart ache good... I strongly recommend this novel to all romance lovers, I'm sure you will love it as much as I did." (Elisa's Reviews and Ramblings)"Hot Head is not your run-of-the-mill gay romance...the hottest homoerotic sex scenes I've read, and yet...the story is about none of that and so much more than that...This book completely fulfilled all of my requirements for a 5-star romance read... If you are ready to be scorched, read it!" (Viv Santos at Queer'd Magazine)"Awarded the Golden Nib: for books that knock our socks off! Magical and beautiful even when it gets down and dirty and completely gutter-talk raunchy. A raw, emotional, very hot, worth-every-penny read. I've re-read it three times now, and it should get old, but it hasn't. That's Golden Nib worthy!" There is a raw intensity in the writing which I find captivating. So what if certain phases are overboard. It just gives the guys' story that much extra punch.I could never resist a M/M romance firefighters story. There is just something so sensual and sexy about these hunks and they are heroes. And this is who Griff and Dante are. Like the first reviewer, I love the way the writer blend the "9-11" tragedy into their story. Griff and Dante were there and because of that these two firefighters seemed so real to me.The story is told from Griff's POV but we get to know Dante just as well. I love both characters as they struggle with the realization that their love for one another is far beyond between brothers or best friends. These guys' chemistry is palpable, their love story intense and gritty. As for the sex,wow..From the description I was worried the sex could be too much but how wrong I was. This is foremost about emotions, raw, intense and gritty emotions. There is a marvelous plot here from the time Griff is "adopted" by Dante's caring family, the boys blossoming into best buddies, covering for each other, Griff's struggle to overcome the painful impact of "9-11", Dante's dare devilled attitude and Griff's solid presence in his life...So much to marvel about these guys.Oh yes, back to the sex. When it happens it just sizzles. Very hot. This is coming from someone like me who has got into the mundane habit of fast forwarding sex scenes. No fast forwarding here at all. There is that one chapter in which the writer lovingly describes one of the guy's body, posts and postures, which I find so hot and sexy. Yet there is an underlying melancholy too when one paramedic is so horribly "gay-bashed", which could easily happen to one of them. While I am satisfied with the ending, I do hope there is a sequel soon. As for the supporting characters they are just as likable from one Russian owner of "Hot Head" to one charming little girl. This MM romance is definitely a winner among the many being churned out every day.

In some ways adding another to the pile may seem like a waste of space. I mean, what could I say that hundreds of other people haven't already said and likely said it better than I ever could? That would be a good question, but if I didn't write this review, I wouldn't be able to rave and gush and dance about how absolutely amazing, completely unforgettable this book is.There are so many great things to say about this novel, that I've decided to list them, complete with numbers. In no particular order, here are 13 reasons to read this book:1. Griff is the perfect romantic hero. He's kind of quiet, self-effacing, with heroic tendencies who doesn't recognize his own appeal. He's generous and kind, but with enough temper and steel to keep him from coming off as week or boring.2. "They'd all looked into the abyss and it kept right on looking back, window-shopping for damnation, it seemed."3. Dante is also the perfect romantic hero. He's charismatic, outgoing, a little over-the-top. He comes across a little shallow on the outside, but under the facade, he's vulnerable and desperate. He's gorgeous and knows it, but has enough pain and insecurities to keep him from being gratingly arrogant.4. The relationship is built spectacularly. From the back-story of how they met, the life-altering trauma of being working firemen during the chaos of the Twin Towers attacks, the fraternal friendship and eventually the romantic love that will change their life--it all adds up to a masterful love story.5. Firemen are sexy. Two firemen are even sexier. 'Nuff said.6.The writing is superb--creative, raw, unapologetic, heart-wrenching and at times poetic.7. The pacing is perfect. Every step, every stage, builds on the one before it, until the reader is desperate to get to the next scene, the next chapter.8. Suede builds a fabulous metaphor between the events of 9-11 and the growth of the characters. I'll add here that it is done in such a way that it does not detract from the seriousness and horrifying events of that day, but instead builds on the resilience and transformation of a neighborhood, community and country.9. "Because people should not be punished for loving and hoping and holding their hearts open."10. The setting is authentic. From the ethnic neighborhoods of the regular blue-collar man, to the trendy neighborhoods of Manhattan, it is New York in all it's beauty and flaws.11. "I can't imagine doing it for your whole goddamn life. 'S'like being burned alive, lying to people you love. No wonder people become drunks and hide and hit each other. Truth. Easier to be dead inside."12. The sex is hot! This book is by no means an erotic romance, where the story is the sex. This is a pure romance and the love scenes are about love. Whether it's the love of a friend will to do intimate things in front of a camera to help out or as two people celebrating their romantic attraction, the love scenes were so drenched in emotion and passion that it makes me yearn.13. Secondary characters add depth and texture to an already layered plot. The Anastagio family is a riot--dramatic, exaggerated, Italian. Tommy is heart-breaking (and rumor has it Tommy will be back in a book of his very own). Alek keeps you guessing, but ultimately gives Griff the catalyst to fight for what he wants. If you like your romances heart-felt and smokin' hot, you've gotta check this one out.

Hot Head - An unforgettable love story By Jessewave From the ashes of 911 Damon Suede has written a novel that's raw, dialogue that's fresh, a plot that grips you and makes your stomach ache, prose that entices, and characters that are so incredibly complex, flawed and over the top you will have no doubt who wrote Hot Head because the author's fingerprints are all over every page. This book has all the elements I look for in an unforgettable story - drama, human tragedy, family, heart, guts, excitement, the unexpected, and above all, unconditional love.Reading Hot Head I was transported to the delicious mix of the ethnic neighbourhoods in New York - Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island, Yonkers, Queens - in all their decaying decadence against the glamour and glitter of preppy upscale Manhattan. The smells and different races living on top of each other trying to make a living and barely doing so were realistic and immediate and I felt as if I were living this story rather than reading it. The city was alive and the atmosphere sparkled underneath the mosiac that made up the Big Apple, but that apple had a worm at its core because of the reality that was 911.Hot Head is a book you will want to savour. The characters are exceptionally well drawn and New York City with its beauty and flaws is a fitting canvas for Griff's and Dante's romance. Amidst all of this rich history and the daily grind of work, Griff and Dante are two men who have a new reality - they are in love with each other but in their world of firefighters that love is not welcome. Nothing in this book is predictable. The emotions are gritty and raw, the protagonists are flawed, the supporting characters are as diverse as you would ever want to meet in the pages of a book, people get hurt, the writing is mostly great even though at times it's so over the top that I had to admire Damon Suede for having the guts to dare write such prose and dialogue. But the prose is so rich and intense it made me forgive the author's excesses as he writes the way he lives, OUT LOUD!Everything in the book is on a grand scale with no apologies. Hot Head is more than a romance. It's also part of the Twin Towers aftermath but not in a way that's maudlin. Sure, thousands died when the Towers were blown up but the book did not dwell on what is now history, it embraced it and moved on.Griff grew incredibly during the book and evolved from the overgrown 6f5 shy, self effacing character with no self confidence into a wonderful man who knew he was loved by the one person who meant the world to him and was the core of his life. He was a contradiction because he was huge in terms of his physical proportions, but on the flip side he was emotional and needy. I could feel the heat and intensity between the protagonists because Dante was no slouch either where his feelings for Griff were concerned. He was like a bright flame that burned at both ends and Griff was the moth. Dante loved danger, embraced it without thinking about the consequences, and lived his life on the edge. However he was the one constant in Grifffs life who took care of him when he suffered from panic attacks for years. You will love the Anastagio family, especially the parents and Dante's brash sister Loretta. There are too many characters to mention but Tommy Dobsky, a paramedic who almost died horribly in a hate crime, will break your heart, and he's coming back in the next book in the series, Hard Head.Hot Head is entertaining, vibrant and original, the writing is fresh, the protagonists kick butt, and oh! before I forget, the sex is off the chart
