A European lately arrived in China, if he is of a receptive and reflective disposition, finds himself confronted with a number of very puzzling questions, for many of which the problems of Western Europe will not have prepared him. Russian problems, it is true, have important affinities with those of China, but they have also important differences; moreover they are decidedly less complex. Chinese problems, even if they affected no one outside China, would be of vast importance, since the Chinese are estimated to constitute about a quarter of the human race. In fact, however, all the world will be vitally affected by the development of Chinese affairs, which may well prove a decisive factor, for good or evil, during the next two centuries. This makes it important, to Europe and America almost as much as to Asia, that there should be an intelligent understanding of the questions raised by China, even if, as yet, definite answers are difficult to give.

The Problem of China, by Bertrand Russell

From the Back Cover This study of the history of China, its social forces and tendencies and the character of its people, was originally published in 1922, following the author's return from a year as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Beijing. Although much has happened in the years that have intervened, the book still has great value and interest for all who are concerned to understand China and her future amongst the major nations of the world. It contains much interesting historical analysis which is very relevant today, and some extraordinarily far-sighted observations. For this reason a reprint has been felt desirable and it has been left unchanged. If in part it may reveal a record of dead hopes and dead fears, those parts which are not topical are still true; and, having regard to China's rapid growth in industrial and international power, those permanent elements of the book cannot be neglected either by the student of international affairs or by the general reader.

About the Author Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) was born in England and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. His long career established him as one of the most influential philosophers, mathematicians, and social reformers of the twentieth century.

Insightful Thoughts Even Valueable Today By William Hu Russell explained in depth the power balance in China among British, French, Russia, US, Germany, and Japan in the late 19th century and early 20th century. As a peace lover, Russell disgusted at the Japanese invasion and control in China. He was able to explain the root cause of the Japanese aggression using the Race, Culture, Religion, and Industry development factors. As he stated the Chinese culture could not incubate aggression as contrary to the Japanese culture. Since the Far East culture root is deep and usually carries along for centuries, I believe his view still holds true in the 21st century. This book also explained the possibility of a 'Red China' in 1922. Because Russia was a traditional enemy of Japan in the Far East, Russell thought Russia would have a huge impact on 'Young China' because "one's enemy's enemy is usually a friend". I was so much impressed by Russell's social analysis and insightful thought on China. I wish he were still alive today so he could educate the Westerns about who is the true peace loving people in the Far East.

Insightful account By Goh Kai Ling Bertrand Russell gives an in-depth account and analysis of the problems faced by China during the early 20th century. While analyzing the dynamics at play on the global front, he also attempts to identify the three most pressing issues which China faced internally--the need for an orderly government, industrial development under Chinese control and the spread of education. Notwithstanding the fact that he is a Westerner, he strives to debunk myths and prevailing misconceptions of the Chinese people. Russell writes elegantly and this book is indeed a remarkable account for those who wish to learn more about China.

Even good for western people to understand current China By A Customer In this book, Bertrand Russell expressed his ideas about both the positive and negative characters of Chinese. It can only be written after carefully thinking over what are in Chinese people's mind. And only you have been to China for over 6 months can you really understand what he really means. This is perhaps the best book for western people to learn the way of thinking of Chinese and the character of the Chinese people. After reading the book I think people will rebuild an idea about China, thus they can understand the Chinese people in American better.

This is a read that requires courage, openness, and the desire to actually improve your own thinking. Being exposed to this information will change you, either grow as the text allows or shrink behind it for fear sake. Plainly speaking there are profound truths that can not be ignored once exposed. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Uneven and agendized, but, nonetheless, an important piece of 1st Great War literature. By 88 I recommend this book only to people with a medium to high level of knowledge of The 1st Great War. They will find it fascinating since this was written while the war was raging and you can read 1st hand the mentality that sent millions to their deaths. It will add to your understanding, that is so alien to us 99 years later, how men could be so impatient to meet their doom (in a day and age without graphically violent war video games and slasher movies to desensitize society to gore and death, Peat acts as such).Mr Peat spends large chunks of time propagandizing against the Germans. He uses every opportunity to spread rumors and diminish the fighting qualities of the German soldiers. This is new for me, all the memoirs I've read have respected their foes. He mixes this in with vivid, real, action packed accounts of the front and rear lines to make himself seem honest. This is one of the few memoirs I've read where I actually felt that the author was misleading in parts about being and seeing some of the things he wrote. However, I do appreciate Peat's service and I do understand the desire to combat the German propaganda machine rampant in America at the time, to honor his fallen comrades, and to make a small name for himself while doing his part for the war by getting more Americans and Canadians to sign up for service. There is a lot to take out of this book and you should read it, but through a filter of knowledge and understanding. There are too many vignettes of early 20th century ephemera to pass up.

A book of poems written to find my own truth in order to grow; and move forward in love and light. They were written when I felt the world didn't see the depth of my perception of it. Darker poems of a past I have survived. Poetry is an art, used by many to make sense of their surroundings. They may not always be how you presently feel, but at the time you wrote them, they are what got you through.

I've wanted to re-read it for years. Finding it in an Amazon Kindle edition at no cost was wonderful. The book is easy to navigate, the type is clear and easy to read, and it makes for a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The book is a story about 19th-Century pioneers in the Lac St. Jean country north of the Laurentides Park in Quebec.I recommend it.

Jacob Ericson is a quiet, kind and somewhat simple man who works as a ranch hand for crotchety Professor Carter and his crippled daughter, Sharon, in California's Mojave Desert in the 1920s. Jacob is a good man, genuine, honorable, but hardly extraordinary–until he miraculously heals a dying calf with his hands.

However, while he is content to cure the town's animals, it isn't long before he is persuaded to use his gift in other ways. When Sharon, whom he adores, begs him to heal her leg, he cannot deny her.

His acquiescence causes them both to be exploited. Sharon runs away to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of stardom. Jacob follows her, hopeful that they will meet again. And they do–as miserable performers in a seedy stage show. While they plan their escape from the dreary stage life, Jacob is asked to heal a self–absorbed young millionaire. And with his assent, Jacob's plans and all of his dreams begin to crumble.

Written in tight, vivid, and seamlessly crafter prose, this previously unpublished tale by two of the greatest storytellers of the twentieth century shows the dangers a magical gift holds for even the noblest of characters.

Jacob's Hands: A Fable, by Christopher Isherwood, Aldous Huxley

Amazon.com Review This collaborative effort between Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood, from a film project they were contracted to write in the late 1930s, was discovered in a trunk at Huxley's estate by actress Sharon Stone, who was researching the author's work for a film based on one of his short stories. Jacob's Hands is a novella-length film treatment for a script about a ranch hand who, after learning that he has the gift of healing, becomes disillusioned when he discovers that mending a broken body does not always heal a tormented soul. The slim volume proves both mesmerizing and moving, and the use of the present tense lends an air of innocence and mystery to the story, while the book's emotional undercurrents and passions stir up deeper, troubling responses. Jacob's Hands is a complex, disquieting modern fairy tale unlike anything else by either author, and a fascinating artifact of their Hollywood careers. --Michael Bronski

From Publishers Weekly Forgotten in a trunk for six decades and uncovered by actress Sharon Stone, who flirted with the idea of producing it, this sentimental screen story, or novella, revisits the 1920s with a nostalgic eye. Gentle, simple-souled Jacob Erickson works on a ranch in the Mojave desert as a semi-magical healer of sick and injured animals. When Sharon, the boss's crippled but stage-struck daughter, asks shyly adoring Jacob to heal her, too, he obliges and she flees the ranch. Eighteen months later, they meet again in L.A.: he's a workman, healing children who are brought to him at a small church; she works in a burlesque theater?the reality pit stop of her stage dreams. Seeing money in Jacob's powers, the theater's unscrupulous managers blackmail Sharon into convincing Jacob to go into the healing business with them. Sharon and Jacob should go back to the clean pure desert and do some good, but they are trapped by Jacob's compassion for one of his patients, Earl Medwin, the chronically ill heir to a vast fortune, and by Sharon's final surrender to temptation?Earl's assiduous attentions and all that money. Written in the present tense, occasionally in summary paragraphs that seem to be standing in for dialogue, Huxley's and Isherwood's collaboration makes even Forrest Gump (which it resembles much more closely than, say, Isherwood's Cabaret-inspiring The Berlin Stories or Huxley's Brave New World) look morally complex. Even so, it exposes a strong spine of dramatic conflict and a definite period charm. Agent, Dorris Halsey; film rights to Arthur Axelman, Rialto Films and Dorothea Petrie. (Sept.) FYI: The book's jacket will feature an illustration by Don Bacardi, who was Isherwood's lover.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews A literary curiosity. While resident in Hollywood in the 1940s, the acerbic British novelist Aldous Huxley and the playwright Christopher Isherwood collaborated on two screenplays. Though the actual screenplay of ``Jacob's Hands,'' the tale of a naive faith healer in the 1920s, apparently no longer exists, a narrative treatment of it was recently located among Huxley's remaining papers and is now being published. While elements of the tale are clearly reminiscent of these writers (Huxley's bemused fascination with America's pursuit of fame and fortune; Isherwood's deep interest in spirituality), the prose is at best workmanlike. That isn't surprisingthis draft was likely meant for private circulation, not publication. The story focuses on Jacob, a traumatized veteran of WWI who has fled to the Mojave Desert for solitude, but is discovered to carry an uncanny ability to heal in his handsas well as a gift for sensing the true state of someone's spirit. Used to practicing his gift on animals, he reluctantly agrees to try to help Sharon, a young crippled woman. He succeeds, becomes infatuated with her, and follows her to Los Angeles, where she has gone determined to become a star. Not surprisingly, Jacob is discovered by a huckster who uses the healer's love for Sharon (who has become a cynical, opportunistic entertainer) to turn him into a saleable commodity. Romantic complications and betrayals follow, and Jacob eventually flees back to the desert. It's hard not to imagine the film while reading this spare narrative, but equally hard to find much pleasure in the prose. A minor, if intriguing, footnote to two impressive careers. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

By Kelly Jones The narration of this story is more simplistic than Brave New World, but keep in mind that Jacob's Hands was written as a screenplay, not a novel. Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood have created a wonderful story and though the reading is easy, the questions brought to life in this tale are anything but. Jacob is the shy, gentle antagonist (who reminds me of John Steinbeck's Lenny)blessed and cursed simultaneously with the gift of healing. Exploited and heart-broken, he must determine the true benefit of mending the broken bodies brought to him when he can do nothing to repair their souls. Ideas in this story range from the physical hardships of the lame, to the role of spirituality in healing, to first loves and betrayal. Enjoyable and thought-provoking, I recommend this book to anyone who likes to ponder over Huxley's logic, or just enjoys to read.

He truly believes in goodness. This book is a look into the evils of human nature. Human nature is greedy and self serving, unfortunately, Jacob does not realize this. In attempt to give his love all that he can, he opens himself up to exploitation. This book is a reader's journey into the souls of the pure and the corrupt. Perhaps the authors whished us all to take a good deep look into our own souls and the manner in which we treat others. This book is just one more glorious demonstration of life by Adlous Huxley, this time with the help of Christopher Isherwood.

To Be Swallowed By Stacey @ The Scenic Life The story goes that in 1997 actress Sharon Stone was reading the diaries of playwright/novelist Christopher Isherwood and discovered that Christopher has collaborated on a screenplay with novelist/essayist Aldous Huxley. She asked permission to search the estate, and in a dusty trunk was found a yellowed copy of Jacob's Hands. The best guess is that the fable had been written in the late 1930's, when (as the back jacket says), "a large sector of the intellectual community of Europe immigrated to the United States, to California in particular. What they found there was Nirvana - sunshine, freedome, mysticism, and the burgeoning movie industry." The two great thinkers met amidst this illectual Utopia and wrote this work together. This is a short book, an easy read in an hour's time. As such, it is hard to say too much without giving it all away. Jacob is a good, honest, decent, sound, strapping young man. The kind of man that sees no ill will in others because he has none in himself. He learns as a farmhand on a California ranch that he has the power to heal. The power makes other love him, suspect him, and ultimately exploit him. He loves Sharon, the daughter of his former boss on the ranch. He meets Earl, a young millionaire with need of his healing powers. The three of them form a triangle that sort of reminds me of the ending of Ethan Frome (don't ask me why, though, since it's kind of a stretch). The overriding theme, I believe, of the book is this question: is it more important to heal the soul or to heal the body? Are they ultimately connected or mutually exclusive? There is also some discussion of how sometimes we hold on to our illness, our weakness; we are wont to let them go. Because somehow they come to define us, and we survive more with the fear than we can live without it.There is a brief introduction to the book by Aldous' wife, Laura Archera Huxley. It is useful in the fact that she gives some background into Aldous' thoughts on healing and the moral and religious implications of such a gift. It helps to set an informed backdrop to this interesting and thought-provoking fable.

'It's Saturday and everything is different. No, I didn't go to the market this morning and I didn't have my usual coffee on Westerstraat. And no, I wasn't getting ready for a new semester at college. Next Monday, January 31st, I have to admit myself at the hospital for my first chemotherapy session. For the next two months, I'm expected each week for a fresh shot of vincristine, etoposide, ifosfamide and loads more exciting abracadabra.'Sophie is twenty-one when she is diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of cancer. A striking, fun-loving student, her world is reduced overnight to the sterile confines of a hospital. But within these walls Sophie discovers a whole new world of white coats, gossiping nurses, and sexy doctors; of shared rooms, hair loss, and eyebrow pencils.

As wigs become a crucial part of Sophie's new life, she reclaims a sense of self-expression. Each of Sophie's nine wigs makes her feel stronger and gives her a distinct personality, and that is why each has its own name: Stella, Sue, Daisy, Blondie, Platina, Uma, Pam, Lydia, and Bebé. There's a bit of Sophie in all of them, and they reveal as much as they hide. Sophie is determined to be much more than a cancer patient.

With refreshing candor and a keen eye for the absurd, Sophie van der Stap's The Girl With Nine Wigs makes you smile when you least expect it.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A brave woman, an ordinary memoir By RobynJC Sophie was barely out of her teens when she started feeling off - run down, achy, with night sweats. One doctor after another couldn't figure out what was wrong, but everyone was stunned when she was finally diagnosed: a rare cancer that had spread extensively throughout her body. The survival statistics were grim and suddenly Sophie was looking at more than a year of chemo, extended hospital stays, and a life that seemed to be shutting down just as it was starting to open up.Of course, Sophie survived her disease. This book was written ten years after the diagnosis, drawn from a combination of the journal she kept at the time, and her reflections now, years later. I find it a bit difficult to review a book like this, because how can you give a negative review to a young woman's bravery under incredibly difficult circumstances? So let me be clear, I 'm not reviewing Sophie as a person. She seems delightful and strong. And she's a decent writer, also; the book flowed along.But... it didn't really resonate for me. There are a number of "I survived my illness" memoirs on the market, and all writers have to find a way to make theirs stand out. The angle here is the wigs that Sophie chose: when she was feeling sickly and weak, she discovered that putting on different wigs gave her different kinds of courage. One wig made her bold, one was practical, one encouraged her to dance, one made her feel like a sex kitten, etc. It's a nice idea. And I like the concept that you can "put on" courage when you need it most. But - that's sort of a good essay; it doesn't really hold up as the frame for an entire book. And I guess that's my criticism overall. It feels like a good essay that was fluffed out to manuscript length; literally, especially in the second half of the book, we're just reading pages and pages of journal entries that don't do much more than record "here's something that happened today and here's how I felt about it." By the second half of the book there were no new insights and no new developments, plot-wise.Thankfully and mercifully, Sophie's treatment was successful and without incident - this is a blessing for Sophie as a person, but it removes some story elements from the book. Late in the book, she introduces a new character - a woman with a terminal diagnosis, who knows from the beginning that she will not survive the disease - and it's possible that this could have been an interesting arc, as Sophie moves towards life and another woman moves away; but this character comes in so late and has such a brief stay, that it feels like another way to make the book longer, as opposed to a meaningful story. By the end, I was quickly shuffling through pages, as my interest had waned. So - I like Sophie. I admire her courage and her humor, and she can write well. But as a work of memoir, this did not resonate as well for me.

Kennedy Sophie van der Stap has written a luminous account of her battle at a very young age with a rare form of cancer. A 21-year-old college student when she is diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a particularly virulent form of cancer, Sophie is plunged into the terrifying world of the gravely ill. The hospital, not the college campus, becomes her world. "For a week I lay there in my white room, in my white bed, in my white hospital gown, surrounded by white, white, white," she writes.Sophie's monochromatic world explodes with color when three weeks into her treatment her best and dearest friend takes her shopping at a theater supply store for wigs to cover her head that has been robbed of hair by chemo. Expecting to see the kind of awful "beehive" wigs she has seen at other shops, she is delighted to encounter heads of witty, playful hair -- short red hair, long blonde locks, a shiny white bob. Over time, Sophie acquires nine wigs, each of which she affectionately names: Daisy, Sue, Blondie, Barbie, Platina. The wigs not only help her face her ordeal with courage, they provide a window into who the adult Sophie might be. "I feel almost lucky that I can wear different wigs and try out different personalities. That I can somehow figure out who I am underneath," she writes.Ms. van der Stap writes with clarity and simplicity and large doses of humor. Even writing at the age of 32 years old today, she remembers what it was like to be so young when her world was upended. She swoons over "Dr. McDreamy," she blares the Rolling Stones to cover her anxiety, she watches "Desperate Housewives" with the nurses, she gives cancer the finger (in a mirror) as she begins her battle.Ms. van der Stap doesn't gloss over the pain, the nausea, the terror, the daily humiliations of being a cancer patient. And she is an extreme cancer patient: fifty-four weeks of chemo followed by radiation. Yet it's very telling that as an epigraph to the book, she chose a quote from the Greek poet, C.P. Cavafy: "As you set out for Ithaka / hope your road is a long one / filled of adventure, full of discovery." I was glad to go along on this young woman's journey, and I think you will be, too.

Courageous cancer-survival memoir By Paul Allaer "The Girl With Nine Wigs" (original title "Meisje met negen pruiken" published in 2006 in the Netherlands) is the debut memoir from Sophie van der Stap, who finds out, at age 21, that she has cancer, and not just any cancer, but a rare cancer form (the technical term being 'rhabdomyosarcoma', which is a rare malignant tumor involving striated muscle tissue). The memoir details how Sophie copes.Couple of comments: first, this book is now almost 10 years old, and has been a runaway success in much of Europe (it even was made into a movie in Germany in 2013 called "Heute bin ich blond"). Why it has taken this long to get the book published onto the American market, I don't know, but better late than never I suppose. Second, the author does a wonderful job explaining to us the use of the (eventual) nine wigs in total, which in essence act as/allow her to live different personalities, depending on the mood and the overall well (nor not so well) being that she is. "Before long, I come home with Blondie, a short and sexy blond bob. She's my only wig so far made out of real hair. Blondie makes me feel like an independent woman, even if the opposite is true." Along the way, we start to understand the anger, the frustration, and of course the fear (of dying) that the author goes through (the book covers roughly a period of 18 months). This does not always make for easy reading, to be honest. But in the end, one simply is in awe of the courage and the determination of this young woman.Interestingly, in this 2015 edition (which sports a brand new post-scriptum by the author, dated June, 2015), the author feels compelled to post this Note to the Reader at the beginning of the book: "The events in this book took place prior to Lance Armstrong's admission of doping. While I do not condone his behavior, I continue to admire him for what he has overcome, for being a cancer survivor", wow. All that aside, "The Girl With Nine Wigs" is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The work was originally written in Bengali published over different Bengali books on poetry from where 103 poems have been picked, compiled and consolidated in this book. The translation has been done from Bengali to English by Rabindranath Tagore himself. Gitanjali in literal meaning denotes an offering of a handful of songs.Gitanjali when was released first in August 1910, just one day before the date that became our Independence Day later (15th August). And then Gitanjali made Rabindranath Tagore the first non-European to win a Nobel for Literature in 1913. The book shook the whole world and placed India, Rabindranath Tagore and Gitanjali on international arena of literature. These poems are only numbered, not titled. Hence each poem brings a different meaning to each of its reader without getting drifted away by the preconception got generated by reading a title. Each of the poem is thought provoking, intriguing, deeply meaningful and motivational. These poems in Gitanjali are building blocks of anyone within. You read a poem post which it forces you to interrogate yourself, discuss it with yourself to get deeper and deeper to conclude it.In poem no XXXVI Tagore seems to be interacting/ conversing with God telling to accept his prayer to him and fill in the unfilled portion within his heart. Tagore prays to God to give him strength to absorb his joys and sorrows faced in life and not to get drifted away by them. He further adds to his prayer to God to shower his blessings so that love becomes meaningful in life.

Perhaps that's why Harry takes to sex for a living, turning a trick as a gay escort, the eponymous Young Lad on Old Street. It's a murky business in the course of which Harry meets Frank, a dubious entrepreneur from London's seedier side. Frank draws Harry into a world where he's swindling his best friend's widow, whose interests the naive Arthur is seeking to defend, and where they attract the attention of psychotic gangsters. Everyone's after a buck and Frank's after Harry too, but Harry is star-struck by the unfortunate Arthur. All this while everything's cratering at home. Can Harry come out unscathed?

By JB Hamilton Queen This anthology delivers shivers down the spine, held breaths, and brings questions that beg for an understanding of those mysterious surprise events that happen in our lives, the unexplainable. Coincidence is merely a small step that leads into the serendipity, where magic happens. Loved every one of these stories.

WAITING FOR THE SUNRISE is a view of the Goan experience in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania of the 1950s and 1960s, through the lens of music. Musicians as far away as East Africa, India, and North America are inspired and connected through jazz. Leading the story are intimate and engaging first-hand accounts of musicians, whose friendships continue through good and difficult times. In this moving portrayal of Goan jazz musicians and the role they played in enriching their community, the back beat is the healing power of music.

In this lyrical novel set in a Cuban-American neighborhood in Miami, three generations of women face an unexpected—and ultimately life-changing—trial. When Maribel, an overly cautious and orderly market analyst, gives birth to a severely handicapped baby, her mother, Adela, and her grandmother Cuca must put aside their differences to fill his short life with love. This means more than just a shift in attitude for Cuca, who speaks regularly to her deceased husband, and for Adela, a middle-aged beautician with a penchant for the lottery and her friend’s husband.   Poetic and poignant, spiritual and deeply human, The Chin Kiss King explores the resiliency of mothers, the power of love, the hopefulness of redemption, and the meaning of faith in an unforgettable story of family and the ties that bind.

The Chin Kiss King: A Novel, by Ana Veciana-Suarez

Amazon.com Review In Ana Veciana-Suarez's debut novel, three generations of Cuban-American women struggle to care for an ailing, premature baby boy. An extra chromosome has thrown Victor Eduardo's whole body out of whack. He has tiny holes in his heart and keeps getting pneumonia. His mother, Maribel, falls apart, his grandmother plays the lottery, and his great-grandmother talks to ghosts. Victor Eduardo's birth brings Cuca, Adela, and Maribel to understand one another better than ever, even though they have lived together in the same Miami duplex for Maribel's entire life. Have a hankie ready, because this is a very sad story.

At 77 years of age, Cuca has a vibrant spiritual life--she regularly converses with her deceased husband, brother, and grandmother, asking them for advice on helping Victor and consoling Maribel. Cuca's daughter Adela is something of a wild woman, a sexy, middle-aged beautician who distracts herself from the baby's woes by playing the lottery and having an affair with her best friend's husband. Until Victor's birth, Maribel thought she was completely different from her mother. She was a marketing analyst, an orderly, cautious person. Her son's difficulties shatter her beliefs in rules and justice. In the wake of the tragedy, she hardly recognizes herself: "The Maribel who had thought life could be simplified into charts, where had she gone?" It is difficult to write about a sick and dying baby without resorting to clichés or becoming overly sentimental. Ana Veciana-Suarez makes a valiant effort to do so in The Chin Kiss King. --Jill Marquis

From Library Journal This first novel by Miami Herald columnist Veciana-Suarez depicts three generations of Cuban American women?Cuca, her daughter Adela, and Adela's daughter, Maribel?and the circumstances surrounding the premature birth of Victor Eduardo, Maribel's son. The three women are all quite different; Cuca fervently believes in spirits, cosmetologist Adela is overly fond of men, and brisk Maribel is a market researcher who does not yet share the spirituality of her mother and grandmother. But the three women do share the painful losses of fathers, husbands, children, and siblings?and, finally, the traumatic birth of the handicapped Victor, which causes each woman to reconsider her own life and develop a deeper acceptance and appreciation for the others. Although some of the dialog is awkward and some of the material repetitious, this book has many effective and beautiful passages. Recommended for public libraries.-?Rebecca A. Stuhr-Rommereim, Grinnell Coll. Libs., Ia.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews A tenderly moving debut novel about three generations of Cuban-American women who turn the brief life of a handicapped baby into a celebration of life and love. Veciana-Suarez, a columnist for the Miami Herald, sets her first fiction in the same Miami neighborhood she grew up in: a place of bodegas, Cuban restaurants, and neatly maintained duplexes like the one her characters share. The three protagonists here have not had an easy life: Cuca, the matriarch, is long-widowed; Adela, her daughter, was divorced while still raising her only child; and this child, Maribel, now adult and pregnant, has been abandoned by her drug-running husband. The three women have responded to trouble in different ways. Cuca, who endured numerous pregnancies before giving birth to Adela, is comforted by memories of her life in Cuba, by her talks with the dead, and by her practice of herbal medicine. Adela, a frivolous and pleasure-loving cosmetologist, has numerous lovers, including the husband of her best friend. Maribel, unlike her mother, is an immaculate housekeeper, a serious career woman, and, except for her passion for drug-dealing Eduardo, is ``a stranger to risk and adventure.'' When baby Victor Eduardo is born prematurely, however, all their lives are changed. Victor is born with trisomy 18--an extra chromosome--and Maribel is told he won't live long. In the brief months that follow, she at first fights to keep him alive, then eventually learns to accept what can't be changed as Victor begins to weaken. Adela also joins the fight, discovering some surprising inner resources along the way. And Cuca, keeping watch over the dying baby, is comforted by seeing all she had loved and lost ``waiting for Victor, ready for him.'' A three-hankie debut, luminously written, that is also a loving grace note to family and the human spirit. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

INSPIRINGLY BEAUTIFUL By Gayla Collins After years and years of reading, I am always amazed when I can be pleasantly caught of guard by an exquisite new style of compostion. Ana Suarez's writing is like symphonic music. The poetic verse is brilliant. The story, a child born with severe handicaps, and the three women who fight to see him through his short, but meaningful journey, captures your heart and never lets it go. I have a dear friends who went through a very similar situation with the birth of their son, and having been with them, watching the joy and the agony combine in a universal way to teach us all, I commend, Ms. Suarez on capturing this situation perfectly. This is truly beautiful writing with such quality of depth. An emotional but transforming read!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Clhin Kiss King By Linda McDermott This is an absolutely amazing novel. It uses a mixture of contemporary fiction and magical realism to convey the impact of the birth of a severely disabled child on three generations of seemingly ordinary women. In their struggle to love, understand, and care for the child, they come to love, understand and care for each other. It shows how ordinary people can become extraordinary when facing adversity. The tragic becomes transcendent.
