2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well written and gripping! Another page turner from Kauffman! By Cianna Reider Another great book in the time after time series. Kauffman has created yet another pair of lovers, and they need to deal with all drama in their path to love. Michelle Rosemont has moved to England and fallen in love. Kenneth MacKalvey has a secret past, and is full of mystery and that's what leads Michelle down the wormhole. Just like the other books in Kauffman's time after time series, this has a outstanding plot, very well written characters, and intrigue and drama. It interests the reader, and pulls them into the world, as you root for the characters to end up happily ever after. Each book keeps getting better and better. This was a great read with romance, humor, drama, and some action. It's a great book to add to your reading list, and I promise you won't be disappointed! I thoroughly loved it, and look forward to more books by Kauffman!

It's the kind of thing that ruins the reputation of Kindle Unlimited. Offering books this bad to your subscribers is offensive and disgusting. Don't you have editors that could and should eliminate this awful lack of quality from the list of books you promote?

It was the start of my second new life, in a city that had a spin of its own - a wilder orbit inside the earth's calm blue-green whirl. New York wasn't open to the hopelessness and lost purpose that drifted around lesser places....

Meet Bobby, Jonathan and Clare. Three friends, three lovers, three ordinary people trying to make a place for themselves in the harsh and uncompromising world of the '70s and '80s. And as our threesome form a new kind of relationship, a new approach to family and love, questioning so much about the world around them, so they hope to create a space, a home, in which to live.

Michael Cunningham is the author of the novels Flesh and Blood, The Hours, Specimen Days and By Nightfall.

I wept and bled over its 343 increasingly magnificent pages only to be left in a state of such disorientation that I'm not sure I can write coherently (and certainly not objectively) about it. Yet I'm determined to explain some things, so here goes. This story is not, I think, so much about two boys' (and, eventually, two men's) search for love as it is about one boy's (Bobby's) search for love and one boy's (Jonathan's) search for how to love. The two are brought together, more by instinct than fate, on their first day of junior high school. Bobby, the less excitable if less conventionally "disciplined" of the two, brings with him a tragic past: he had recently lost his beloved brother to a freak accident, and his mother, a few years later, to suicide. Jonathan is the only child of loving but repressed parents; each, therefore, has something the other craves. At an early point in their friendship, Jonathan, acting rashly, almost gets killed in an accident that brings home to Bobby the loss of his brother. I can think of no more beautiful passage in recent literature than the one that describes Bobby's reaction while helping his friend home, swearing at him in a rage (notably Bobby's only outburst in the book) while holding Jonathan to him tighter and tighter. Thus does Bobby establish Jonathan, in his mind, as his surrogate brother, which allows him to fall in love with his friend without (at this point) having to admit to his sexuality. As time passes the two begin to inhabit each other's skin (both figuratively and literally), and when Jonathan finally leaves for college in New York, Bobby moves in with Jonathan's parents. In New York, Jonathan meets his "half-lovers" Clare, with whom he ends up living, and a bartender named Erich. He is committed to Clare emotionally but not sexually and to Erich sexually but not emotionally. Then Bobby moves in with them and, after a brief idyll, Bobby starts sleeping with Clare, at which point Jonathan feels pushed out ("triangulated"). Feeling no emotional connection to Erich, and now seemingly alienated from his "true loves," Jonathan turns to the seeming sanctuary of his family, but even there he cannot manage to connect. In the most beautiful and perfect line in the book, Jonathan reflects, "For a moment I could imagine what it would be like to be a ghost-to walk forever through a silence deeper than silence, to apprehend but never quite reach the lights of home."Rather than self-absorbed, these characters are self-aware, but just to a point. The tragedy is not that they constantly put stumbling blocks in their own paths, but that they know enough to realize what they're doing, yet not enough to realize how to stop. When another tragedy brings Jonathan, Bobby, and Clare back together, it seems that, with time, they finally will all learn to love each other and start "a new kind of family." Even the less cynical among us could accurately predict that they don't, but the last 85 pages of the book, in which allegiances among the three shift moment by moment, are among the novel's finest, a winnowing out process through which some relationships are finally broken and others cemented, but always with the feel of unerring rightness.Unfairly, almost any description of this book is bound to make it seem full of contrivance and improbable coincidence. In fact, it is the author's genius to set up a background of absolute inevitability in the characters' lives, in which every action is linked to every other, and to contrast this with the inability of the characters to see those links and make those connections, within their lives, with each other, and, ultimately, with themselves. So even the reintroduction, toward the end, of Jonathan's old lover Erich, who is now dying of AIDS, is not a melodramatic ploy but an essential plot component whereby Clare comes to see her true role in the lives of the men around her, the reader is left in no doubt about Bobby's sometimes equivocal-seeming sexual identity (the nighttime encounter between Bobby and Erich is both surprising and utterly in keeping with Bobby's character), and brings to the fore Jonathan's sense of pervasive guilt (among other things, his guilt over still not loving Erich even though the latter is dying), which leads, ultimately, to Jonathan's epiphany in the final chapter: an ending both radiant and resplendent that, in hands less "cunning" than Michael Cunningham's, might have seemed like a deus-ex-machina but here caps the story of one man's quest to feel.Obviously, this book will not affect everyone the way it did me. A few years before he died at the age of 91, Somerset Maugham was asked by a critic why, having poured his entire life into Of Human Bondage, he was never able to write another book of equal worth, to which Maugham replied, "Because I had only one life." This book made me feel as though someone had been observing my one life for the past 43 years and turned it into a novel. But since it was someone else who wrote it, there will be others who will read it, weep and bleed over it, and come away from it appreciating their own lives in ways they never thought possible. You don't have to be gay to appreciate this very great book, but I would think it helps. Pride is stamped all over its pages.

I was skeptical, especially when I read the plot synopsis on the back cover--it sounded trendy and just 'way too 90s for me. But lucky for me, I trusted my friend, so I got to live for awhile in the wonderful world that Michael Cunningham has created.First, the writing is simply magnificent; I don't think there's a weak or false sentence anywhere in the book. This is rare prose--lyrical and restrained. Second, I think that Cunningham knows every one of his characters inside out--he knows more than he tells us--because these people are utterly real and convincing. This book is packed with beautiful insights into the human condition, but they are completely embodied in the characters. Finally, the story is vividly and compellingly told--you'll stay with it to the satisfying end.As to the controversy over the various voices, I agree with the previous reviewer. My friend said this is a perfect novel. I agree. How often do you get to say that?

57 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Literature! By JCB A HOME AT THE END OF THE WORLD introduced me to Michael Cunningham--someone who I now consider one of my favorite contemporary authors. He manages to write honestly about friendship, love, sexuality, and life; and even though the story is told in different voices, there's hardly a break in the narrative--the novel flows beautifully and keeps readers turning pages; Cunningham is a master of words. I found Jonathon's friendship with Bobby very compelling. In fact, the chapters in Part I of the novel are, I think, the best chapters; they reveal the innocence of youth between Jonathon and Bobby and captures their friendship so beautifully. I liked this book a lot because I found it easy to relate to many of the events and experiences in Jonathon and Bobby's life. It was like reading a mirror image of my own life. Novels that are able to draw up those memories and connections in readers are the best ones. One reading of this novel isn't enough; it's a novel to be read over and over again.

The House of Pride, and Other Tales of Hawaii, by Jack London

About the Author Jack London was an American author, journalist, and adventurer. London s early careers as sailor, fisherman, and prospector provided inspiration for his later writing, and it was only when he returned from the Klondike that London decided to focus on social activism and journalism. He soon became a popular magazine columnist and author, and a prolific commercial writer, penning over two dozen novels, and numerous short stories and poems. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and the short stories To Build a Fire, and An Oddyssey of the North. London died in 1916.

Six powerful tales of race, class, and leprosy By Karl Janssen The House of Pride, first published in 1912, is a collection of six short stories by Jack London, all of which take place in Hawaii. London traveled to Hawaii on at least three occasions, and it became the predominant setting for the writings of the second half of his career. He loved the climate and the landscape of the islands, and was fascinated by Polynesian history and culture.London also liked writing about Hawaii because the setting gave him an opportunity to explore his favorite themes of race and class. He saw Hawaii as the ultimate melting pot, a South Pacific crossroads where people from all over the world came to mix, mingle, and interbreed. The white colonization of the islands also created a class struggle between the wealthy white traders, industrialists, and missionaries and the disenfranchised natives which formed their workforce. In the title selection, "The House of Pride," a wealthy son of missionaries is forced to deal with the newfound discovery that a half-breed he despises is actually his half brother. In "Aloha Oe," a teenage girl from the mainland falls in love for the first time. When she remembers, however, that her Romeo is of one-quarter native blood, she realizes that they can never be together. "Chun Ah Chun" is the rags-to-riches story of a Chinese peasant who, through relentless industriousness, becomes one of the wealthiest men on the islands. He is unable to find suitable husbands for his dozen daughters, however, because the eligible bachelors of the islands are unwilling to marry the daughter of a Chinese man. London handles the racism of his time matter-of-factly, alternately lamenting and mocking the discriminatory social conventions. Although London has occasionally been guilty of racial insensitivity in his works (see his portrayal of South Sea islanders in The Red One or South Sea Tales, for example), this book is free of such prejudice. He had a genuine admiration and respect for the Hawaiian people, which is quite evident in these stories. In addition to his obsession with race and class issues, for whatever reason, London was fascinated by leprosy. The disease was present among the Hawaiian population during London's time. Infected persons were confined to the leper colony on Molokai, which London once visited. In his stories London displays contradictory motives toward leprosy, on the one hand striving to offer an enlightened and educated perspective on the disease, while on the other hand revelling in the depiction of its hideous effects. In "Good-Bye, Jack!," two wealthy white men debate the virtues of the leper colony, but their detached attitudes are shaken when the disease hits close to home. "Koolau the Leper," the best story in the book, takes place in the secluded Kalalau Valley on the island of Kauai, where the brave and defiant Koolau leads a band of lepers in rebellion against the police and army bent on capturing them and shipping them off to Molokai. In "The Sheriff of Kona," another excellent story, the title character, whose job it is to apprehend lepers, begins to show signs of having contracted the disease himself. These three stories all contain profoundly moving moments, as the characters are confronted by the disease or threatened with lifelong confinement. In London's skillful hands these life and death struggles are rendered as extremely gripping and poignant scenes.Though I have often considered London's South Sea stories to be inferior to his Klondike tales, these six strong pieces have proven me wrong. The House of Pride is an excellent collection, on a par with some of this master storyteller's best work.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Tales of HI By Cynthia I love how the old stories of Hawaii are so similar to how Hawaii is today. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Well done. But hey, it IS Jack London! By SusanInSFL This is everything you'd expect of a Jack London collection of tales. The characters are well developed, even for short stories. The description is vivid. The energy is palpable.Very entertaining, if somewhat depressing (leprosy).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Odd man By Dharma E.P.Oppenheim is always a good observer of human behavior, and sometimes a great one. His description of facial muscles, pupils and eyebrows in sometimes uncanny. He obviously observed his fellows closely and "saw" these movements in his literary characters. The "hero" of this novel, however, is very unusual for several reasons. Oppenheim has almost perfectly described a high functioning autistic personality, almost 40 years before this condition was described in the medical literature. Tavernake is unmotional, unable to sympathize or even understand the most common social situations. He is diligent, precise, obsessive in his persuit of wealth, but oblivious to the feelings of the people around him. They simply don't matter. He meets Beatrice Burnay an American in London without any money. Odd, uncomfortable, almost autistic, He rescues from hunger and possible suicide, and in return she educates him on the possibilities of human emotion.

The detective, Godfrey, is similar to Sherlock Holmes but is more realistic, being a newspaper reporter who was formerly a police detective. The Watson figure is Lester, a lawyer, who follows along and reports what Godfrey discovers. The novel is based on a mystery. Vantine, a wealthy friend of Lester's, purchases a Boule table made during the reign of one of the French Louis and owned by Madame Montespan, a famous poisoner. The mystery begins when two people, including Vantine, are poisoned by the table. Godwin assumes there must be some secret drawers in the piece, and spends, with Lester, much time searching the piece. The first section of the novel is first-rate, as Godfrey and Lester figure out the secrets of the table, but after that the work introduces a second major section based on a French grand criminal who tests Godwin's abilities as a detective. The French man assumes several disguises as he attempts the get the table which now contains some hidden jewels.Although not a great mystery novel, it is a good read and shows how at least one early 20th-century mystery writer drew on the British and French mystery traditions in his work. This edition has a lot of odd typos and other errors, but it's good to have these early works available!

Extraordinarily Beautiful and Poignant By Tinkerbell A beautiful anthology of poems that is a must read for anyone who has experienced love, loss and heartbreak. The writing is simply exquisite, poignant and equally spiritually uplifting. The writer has given the ultimate homage to a very special mother but the words will resonate with anyone.

I expected it to be hogwash and instead found it to be the most useful business book I've ever read. It is a quick read (about 150 pages, not the 240 mentioned in the Amazon catalog). It is entertaining without being self-indulgent and informative without being preachy. The anecdotes revealed an appropriate level of introspection (my one quibble is that Mr. Marriott claims that his family and faith come before business and yet also describes himself as a workaholic). I'm not in the hospitality industry and yet I found dozens of parallels to my own business (computer software and book publishing). Most interesting were the frank assessments of Marriott's business mistakes. He truly used them as an opportunity to learn. The book is chock full of excellent and thought-provoking strategies and totally devoid of the cheesy buzzwords so prevalent in, say, the latest Tom Peters books. Although I have no association with Marriott, the book will cause me to examine the entire service industry in a new light.

Sound advice from an industry leader By Amazon Customer In The Spirit To Serve, Bill Marriott offers advice on how to develop the type of management basics and solid core values that made his company an industry leader. These ideas are neither new nor radical. They are the simple lessons that Mr. Marriott has learned during his lifetime tenure at Marriott.· Take a hands-on approach to your firm. Don't sit at your desk. Walk around your facility and interact with your employees. Make sure they know that you care about what they do.· Managing well depends on listening well. Cultivate patience and keep an open mind when listening to ideas from employees and customers.· Give your employees the tools they need to work. Make sure employees are properly trained for their jobs. After training, make sure there are support systems in place to assist employees.· Offer exceptional employee incentives. Marriott has offered employees a toll-free consultation service, profit-sharing programs, promotion from within and several recognition programs.· Encourage teamwork among workers. Create an environment in which the rewards of working together outweigh the rewards of individual interest.· Don't take your partners for granted.· Discover what works best and do it. Develop detailed standard operating procedures. The right way of doing things is worth making a habit.· Balance who you are with where you are going. Maintain order within your organization while embracing change.· Don't let growing pains destroy what you have built. Stay close to the daily grind of your business during periods of growth. Keep a close eye on quality control.· Don't waffle over decision making. Stand by the decisions you make.· Learn to recognize boom and bust signals. Pay attention to colleagues, reports and other indicators in your industry to get a realistic picture of what is happening. Don't be overconfident.

I was vacationing at a Marriott Hotel and actually bought this book I wanted to read it so much (even though I thought it should just be given away to the guests). It did not disappoint me. As one of the other reviewers noted, it was a well-written, easy read.Mr. Marriott inspired me with the business tips contained in the book. I especially enjoyed reading about the checklists that Marriott Hotels uses in its business. I really like checklists too. Why invent the wheel everytime you want to do something? Why try to remember all of the steps needed to complete a task, such as making up a room at a Marriott Hotel? Why not just find out what works and put it on paper?! In this way, a business can create a standardized process that can be taught to its employees, instead of relying upon each individual's whim. This idea is also discussed in Michael Gerber's excellent book, The E Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It.I also enjoyed reading J. W. Marriott, Jr's criticisms of his father's way of making decisions (I also thought it was interesting that he was so negative with regard to his father, in a published book). Jr. said that his father fretted too much about decisions and basically drove himself crazy. Jr. says in this book that one should not try to make a perfect business decision. That involves too much angst and is a waste of time. One should gather the necessary information to make an informed decision as best as one can, then actually make the decision. The price of pefection is prohibitive.I hope you find this book as enjoyable and as inspiring as I did.

THE languid quiet of midday lay upon the little road-house that stood guard by Verde Crossing. Old Crit and his wild Texas cowboys had left the corral at dawn, riding out mysteriously with their running irons in their chaps; the dogs had crawled under José Garcia's house and gone to sleep; to the north the Tonto trail stretched away vacant and only the brawling of the Verde as it rushed over the rocky ford suggested the savage struggle that was going on in the land. Within the adobe fort that served for both store and saloon Angevine Thorne, Old Crit's roustabout, sat tipped back in his chair breathing thoughtfully through a mouth-organ while a slender Mexican girl, lingering by the doorway, listened in childish adoration.

This book started out really good for me - I liked all the time-period phrases and descriptions from the Old West. At about the 3/4 mark, it suddenly dove into liberal social drivel that, while perhaps accurate, was overly emphasized - repeatedly and long. Also the ending (not to give it away) ended up like something from a Woody Allen movie - not expected to be believed, just an ending. Personally, I can't recommend it unless you're desperate.

Dream Days, by Kenneth Grahame

About the Author Kenneth Grahame was a Scottish writer best-known for his celebrated children s novel, The Wind in the Willows. Prevented from attending university because of financial constraints, Grahame instead took a job with the Bank of England, which provided the financial security required to indulge his passion for writing. Many of Grahame s short stories were printed in the periodicals of the time, and were also later collected in Pagan Papers, The Golden Age, and Dream Days. Grahame s most famous work, the novel The Wind in the Willows, was originally conceived as a bedtime story for his son, and continues to be a beloved classic for children of all ages. Grahame died in 1932 at the age of 73.Ernest Howard Shepard (December 10, 1879 - March 24, 1976) was an English artist and book illustrator. He was known especially for his human-like animals in illustrations for "The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame and "Winnie-the-Pooh" by A. A. Milne.

This book continues the exploits of the children introduced in the first volume. Veddy, veddy English. Completely delightful, though.I am not sure today's children would enjoy this book. The 19th Century British-isms will probably be quite tedious to any but the most precocious of children. And nothing really "happens" so to speak. No adventures of overwhelming magnitude. Rather, the children's imagination governs what happens throughout the book. Small things are turned into events of great importance. Children brought up with video games will most likely be bored. But for an adult, ahhh! This is a find. It will make you yearn for the idyllic childhood you never had or anybody had for that matter. Each chapter is like sunlight shining on a bead of dew in April. Or something similarily poetic. Grahame's the better writer anyway.

It's a deeply enjoyable book that demonstrates the power of "stories" to pull us out of the here and now and make us to stand up straighter, to imagine ourselves as knights and ladies. Grahame's book would be great for older children (young ones may find themselves fidgeting - there is a certain amount of description and archaic language). Adults may actually enjoy this one more than kids. Reading it brought back to me the days of my youth, when a good story could fire my imagination for days, and the characters lived right along side of me, as sort of doppelgangers. This story reminds me of E. Nesbit, another great Edwardian children's writer. Children should read these books, they are well-written and can help foster a love for the "right word" and the well-turned phrase. Try to find a copy with Parrish's illustrations. This whole book is just a wonderful aesthetic experience.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A delightful surprise By Jill I admit it: I bought the Wordsworth paperback edition of this book for one reason -- its cover. Not being a great fan of Wind in the Willows, I was a little leary of what I'd find inside, but have discovered that Grahame's use of language and subtle depiction of character are quite delicious. This would be great for reading aloud to a bright child who enjoys words. That said, it would have to be a child with a sophisticated sense of humour: while Grahame describes everything from the viewpoint of a child's imagination, I get the feeling he's really smiling at the adults over the top of said child's head. I can't wait to read The Golden Gate, which Grahame published a few years before this book.

This book is a clear demonstration that poetry is not just a language but one which we can all understand and speak. Through careful observation of what goes on in society and a memory that hardly goes wrong, the author succeeds in tying up an extricate yet simplistic bundle of many of everyday`s aspects of life. Although some may not be put to you in plain and obvious language, you still find that you end up by getting involved in one way or the other. You feel singled out and at times, even honored.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What a fun book! By Kurt Reichenbach I had a lot of fun with this book. The story about Charles Manson is in itself worth the price of admission. But there are so many others! I noticed another review on here that took issue with some typos and a specific factual discrepancy. Obviously this reviewer doesn't read the NY Times, the Los Angeles Times, or any other mainstream journal in which you can DAILY find typos and factual mistakes. I'm assuming this fellow has ceased reading ANYTHING if he is so turned off by these kinds of minor issues (yes, I even find continuity problems in major bestsellers, from Steven King to James Patterson--but I still read them). Looking at this reviewer's full body of critical writing, I find his critiques to be almost ALL music and film, with only one other reviewed book, which he also didn't like... perhaps he just doesn't LIKE to read. For the rest of you who approach reading with more realistic expectations, buy this book and enjoy it for what it is, a romp through the life of a man who "shared air" with the great and near great!

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Mess By Harry N. Cohen I was looking forward to this book; however within the first few pages there were so many misprints and typos, I had to stop. I started skipping around the book and read the section on Dusty Springfield. The author claimed that Dusty was made a dame shortly before she died. This is not correct. Dusty was OBE,not a dame. Between the poor formatting, typos and factual errors, I did not finish this book.
