0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Kruger's life By MarmaLakeFirearms When I ordered this book, I wasn't sure I would like it. However, Kruger's life is fascinating and reflects well the life and times of the region in Africa. His life is fascinating. It is a journey filled with incredible hardships and deprivations that are reported in a totally matter of fact manner. Paul was one very strong willed individual that, in retrospect, is amazing. There are some quite dry sections- I am not strong on reading the minute details of politics- and to the political correct, some sections could cause offence as, like other men of that time, he believes strongly in the superiority of the whites, the primitive lives of the natives, but this displays the attitude of the times. It is an interesting glimpse of a time long ago.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. L'existence peut être aussi cela . . . By C. Kley I fell across this beautiful story about true friendship. It is deceptively simple and deeply profound all at once. Now I have to read everything else Philippe Claudel has written.Listen to the man's poetry. L'existence "peut être aussi cela . . . des miracles parfois, de l'or et des rires, et de nouveau l'espoir quand on croit que tout autour de soi n'est que saccage et silence!"

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. "There is always the morning..." By Friederike Knabe Monsieur Linh softly sings this lullaby to his granddaughter's ear as she is snuggled next to him on their thin mattress on the cold cement floor. Memories of a happier life back home keep the fragile old man awake and let him forget the cold and the unfriendly surroundings in the new country... This beautifully crafted, subtle yet intensely imagined story of refugee life and its bewilderment, memories of loves lost and the power of friendship found, is one of the most deeply touching stories I have read in a long time.Monsieur Linh, arriving on a refugee boat from somewhere in Asia, having lost his beloved son and daughter-in-law during a recent war, is feeling lonely and confused, without the language of the new country, where everything is foreign to him. The contrast between the village left behind and the big city of the present could not be starker. "This place doesn't have any of the smells ..." he reminisces, recalling the beauty of his homeland. His only consolation is his baby girl, 'Sang diû', who he saved and who is now his sole reason for living. The conditions in the refugee dormitory, the hostility of the other refugees, painted with a few skilful and precise strokes, form the necessary background tableau for Monsieur Linh's loneliness and isolation. The old man, with 'Sang diû' in his arm, wanders all day in the nearby streets and the park, worried about crossing one of the wide highways full of cars. Then, one day, resting on a bench, he meets Monsieur Bark, a large quiet man with features that make Monsieur Linh look and feel even smaller.Over time, even without a common language, the communication blossoms between the two men. Friendship can be expressed through quiet regards and understated gestures, such a touch on the shoulder. Their friendship grows, literally beyond words. In Claudel's perceptive and delicate language, the reader listens in on the two unspoken or spoken monologues that the two friends can only interpret from the changing sounds in the voice or expression in the face. We learn of their backgrounds, their happiness and deep sorrows that brought the two unlikely friends together. One day, however, Monsieur Linh is taken away from the refugee camp to a new residence in another part of the big city...Philippe Claudel, award winning author of numerous novels such as (translated into English) Brodeck and By a Slow River: A Novel (Les Ames Grises), both outstanding and deeply affecting novels, has created with LA PETITE FILLE DE MONSIEUR LINH a masterwork in its subtle and tender portrayal of two human souls, their pain, and the healing power of love and friendship. His graceful lyrical language adds emotional depth and a fable-like reality to the story. Currently unavailable in English LA PETITE FILLE DE MONSIEUR LINH is, according to amazon.com scheduled for publication in the spring of 2011. [Friederike Knabe]

Likewise,a good choice for the intermediate student of French as this work is virtually devoid ofslang and idiomatic expressions some of which can be daunting in modern French.

The written words are filled with sooo many emotions, quite a range, understandably. The most outstanding of these emotions is LOVE. You will feel the love of Theresa for her family and the world, as you read on. This is some good work offered to humanity! Thank you Theresa!

By Amazon Customer I was very impressed with this very young girl who worked so hard and has so much positive and loving spirit after losing so much. I couldn’t put the book down. I wanted to know more about Theresa and her family. My husband, a former US Army Green Beret (attached to the 82nd Airborne out of Ft. Bragg) read and loved the book too. Any time you can get a woman and a Green Beret reading and liking the same book you know the author is doing something right. This book will inspire you to never give up!Sue and Ron Hazel

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. An OK collection with one pleasant surprise By Karl Janssen The Strength of the Strong is a collection of short stories, most of which are good but not great. These were written about the middle of London's career, after his Klondike period and before his South Pacific period, when there was quite a bit of variety in his work, so these stories take place in diverse settings. Many of them deal with political issues, and display London's devotion to Socialism. Probably the best-known story and one of the better written in the collection is the piece for which the book is named. It's an allegorical tale set in caveman times, in which London explains the class struggle from a Socialist perspective, with various characters standing as symbols for government, industry, labor, religion, etc. Three stories, "The Unparalleled Invasion", "The Enemy of All the World", and "The Dream of Debs", are "What if?" histories of political events that take place in the near future (London's future, our past). For the most part they are imaginative in their speculations, but not particularly engaging in character or plot. "The Dream of Debs" is the best of the three. It's about a general strike that reeks havoc on San Francisco. "The Unparalleled Invasion" tells the story of China's rise as a superpower and how the West deals with it. Unfortunately it's marred by a racist attitude toward the Chinese and a glorification of genocide. "South of the Slot" is an unexceptional tale of class struggle in San Francisco. "The Sea-Farmer" is a sailor's tale, above average but once again not remarkable. The real surprise in this collection was the final story, "Samuel", which tells the story of Margaret Henan of Island McGill, Ireland, and her four sons named Samuel who died untimely deaths. London shows a surprisingly touching sensitivity to human emotion in this story. It's also quite suspenseful, not because of any action or adventure in the plot, but rather just the skillful way in which London reveals piece by piece the mystery of this old woman's past, heightening the reader's interest until the very last page. In terms of the style and skill of the writing, this story seems years ahead of much of London's work; it could have been written by William Faulkner. As a whole this collection, though nothing earth-shattering, will prove enjoyable to London fans. Those new or indifferent to London's charms should just read "Samuel".

Issues of noblesse oblige vs. personal happiness. Yes, a melodramatic period piece, but for those of us who love the genre here are characters (Isobel and Arnold) we care about.

By kindlefan Arnold (a writer), Allan (an artist) and Arthur (works in finance) all live together. Arthur has been successful at writing fantasy stories, but he wants to write a real story. Allan tells him to go out and observe humanity, so he goes to a train station. While there, he chances to meet a man who seems to be doing the same thing. Their attention is caught by a middle age man and a young girl about sixteen who seems frightened. They overhear where they are eating and follow them there. They continue to watch the couple and Arnold even goes over to offer her assistance. Then a surprising thing happens, his acquaintance shoots the man she's with and disappears. Amid all the confusion and hospital and police, Arnold stays with the young woman and brings her home. The three men and their housekeeper become her guardians for the next couple of years. The mysterious man comes to see them and asks them to take care of her and not let her go to anyone. They take their charge seriously. There are at least three parties who try to get the girl--a convent, a former love of Arnold's and some royalty. But none of them can prove legally they have a right, so the three men don't give her up. They go to the point of even physically rescuing her.Why do so many people want her? What happens when she becomes a woman?Does Arnold get his real story?

"...The paradox is a two-sided illusion, And you hold the sword..." People have ways to cope with their thoughts and lives; writing is just one of them. One can realize while dancing on the piano keys that to truly live one must experience life, inspiration, love, and change. This collection of poems evolves throughout the lines. Life is a bendy road full of limitless journeys to endure and enjoy. Take hold of happiness and let go of the sorrows while keeping them only as memories of growth. Inspiration is an important factor in life. Without this, society would be at a loss. The smallest amounts of inspiration and creativity can open doors never seen before. The most beautiful joy in life is to experience love, but this tends to happen in the most inconvient times and ways. Love is not just about the good times, but the bad times as well and fighting for each other in a world trying to tear you apart. In some unfortunate circumstances, however, you must sacrifice your happiness and have to let them go. Transition is necessary in life. Going from safety to the unknown makes people typically nervous. Don't be afraid of change, be worried about what will happen if there is no change in the world.

By lionbait A page turner as you walk alongside this family as they learn that their child will have Brittle Bone Disease and how their family adapts and lives with this revelation. Ultimately a story of hope, determination and resilience as they do whatever it takes to thrive in a difficult situation.Perhaps I'm the only one who feels a bit uneasy around special needs people, but this book helped me understand a bit of their struggle, and hopefully will help me be a bit more knowledgeable in my interactions in the future. Well written, highly recommended.

It is the chief object of the following narrative to give an account of the treason of Arnold, its causes, the plans for carrying it forward, and its final issue. In executing this design, it was necessary to touch upon the events of his previous life; and, as many of these have a real interest in themselves, and others a direct bearing on the subject, it is believed no apology for introducing them will be required. The author has of course consulted all the printed books and documents, which he could find; and among others he acknowledges his obligation to M. de Mar-bois' Complot d'Arnold et de Sir Henry Clinton, published several years ago in Paris, and soon afterwards translated by Mr. Walsh for the second volume of the American Register. The parts of M. de Marbois' book, which he wrote from personal knowledge and observation, have a special value; some of the other parts would have been varied, if his materials had been more abundant and exact. Besides printed sources of information, the author has been fortunate in procuring the use of a large number of original papers in manuscript, which have not before been inspected. In the public archives of London he was allowed to peruse the entire correspondence, between the British commander in America and the ministry, concerning Arnold's defection; particularly a very ample narrative of all the transactions, dated nine days after the death of André, methodically drawn up, and signed by Sir Henry Clinton. This correspondence exhibits in a clear view the British side of the question. Among General Washington's manuscripts are also original materials, including the papers that were laid before the board of general officers to whom Andre's case was submitted, and the drafts of letters and other papers left behind by Arnold when he escaped. Arnold's letters to Congress are curious, and indicate the workings of his mind while maturing his plot. The same may be said of some of his miscellaneous letters, which have fallen into the author's hands.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. None By Jeffrey Reed I must disagree with the previous reviewers rating of this book. It is indeed biased (as all history books are) and is agood example of the mythmaking of the early republican New Englanders. That is exactly what makes it a valuable text. I would recommend reading it for this reason and would not hesitate to assign it to my students or read it for fun.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it's ok By Smart Shopper It's a little dry.....much like a school history book. It's factual and detailed but not really all that interesting.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Bad, outdated history By Willard S. Randall Jared Sparks, long dead, was a big gun at Harvard in the early 19th Century. His biographies are prime examples of the bowdlerization of history, cleaned up and skewed to fit the popular prejudices of their time. In particular, Sparks demonized Arnold, epitomizing Shakespeare's line, "The evil that men do lives on after them; the good is oft interred with their bones." This book is useful only as an example of the kind of biased history that it took to manufacture a national patriotic mythology for an infant nation nearly two centuries ago.

Cancer—that unfair, indiscriminate, devastating disease—affects everyone at some point, whether a family member, a friend, or ourselves. It is a life-altering event of seismic proportions that forever impacts the landscape of our lives and, with raw force, pushes us to reorder priorities, reassess values, and perhaps rethink our faith. A diagnosed tumor forced Heather King to this crisis of mortality, to live at the crossroads of uncertainty, belief, fear, culture, and modern medicine. Only her faith in Christ, the Great Physician, helped her sort through the crippling uncertainty and choose her best way forward.Stripped is a heartfelt expression of profound Catholic faith in the face of a cancer diagnosis. It chronicles King’s informed decision not to blindly declare “war on her cancer” but to carefully examine all the medical evidence available and to choose to bring God into her decision making, even if that meant going against established medical advice. The story of Stripped demonstrates how King’s medical and spiritual journey led her to a place of freedom in Christ, where she could make an informed and faith-filled decision about her course of treatment and ultimately, accept her vulnerability. King learned, as we all must, that healing means so much more than simply “getting well.”

Stripped: At the Intersection of Cancer, Culture, and Christ, by Heather King

Review “Heather King’s memoir of her journey with breast cancer is astonishing. It is painful, funny, compassionate, and unforgettable. Her honesty strips away all pretense and invites us into her mind and heart so that page by page we feel what she feels and understand what she comes to understand, that the potential for healing lies within ourselves. ‘The real tragedy,’ she writes, ‘is to die with our truest song unsung – to die without recognizing that our suffering has meaning.’ Stripped has profound spiritual meaning for anyone who reads it. It is amazing.” – Michael Leach, author of Why Stay Catholic? Unexpected Answers to a Life-Changing Question

About the Author Heather King is a Catholic convert with several books, among them Parched; Redeemed; Shirt of Flame; Poor Baby; and Stumble: Virtue, Vice and the Space Between. She writes a weekly column on arts and culture for The Tidings, lives in Los Angeles, and blogs at www.Heather-King.com.

Her writing is personal and enchanting. Her catholicism shines through, but not in a "preachy way". I love her insights. I am awaiting her next book. Is there one Heather?
