It was a grand total of three words. 18 years later people that were there still comment on how great it was, how they still remember it and how they remember him. This book is like a reflection of the world looking back on you. It's classic Hollden, Don't miss it for yourself and after you read it, send a copy to those you hold as special.

All the poems I have written in this book are true and come from my heart. I started writing one day, and the words kept coming. It was a very emotional day: but it also offered me closure. I wrote these poems with the hope of helping anyone who is or has ever been in an abusive relationship. I have covered every emotion and feeling I had, not leaving anything out. I hope that this book travels with you wherever you go, to offer you support and encouragement whenever you need it.

Reaching Up is a collection of story like poems to help anyone in an abusive relationship. These poems will help you deal with many emotions you have while in or leaving a relationship. Nothing could have prepared an ambitious group of college dropouts for what awaited them on the road to potential rock stardom. Suicide, depression, extreme poverty, injuries, broken down vans and nervous encounters with supermodels. This is the story of “Christian Hardcore” band, As Cities Burn. Aaron Lunsford, drummer, takes readers behind the scenes, sharing his unique, and sometimes harsh, perspective on what it was like to attempt to "make it" as a band in the early-to-mid 2000’s. Aaron’s comments on the ins and outs of the music business, as well as the moral pressures of the “Christian” music scene, are eye-opening. Backstage gives fans of any genre of music a chance to put themselves in the shoes of those who dare to dream, and often fall short in the end.

Backstage: How I Almost Got Rich Playing Drums in a Christian Hardcore Band, by Aaron Lunsford

About the Author Aaron Lunsford resides in Nashville, TN with his wife and two children where he is continuing to pursue his drumming career. In 2003 he joined up with As Cities Burn and went on to record and tour with the band until 2013. As Cities Burn released 3 records with Tooth and Nail Records and toured with bands such as Underoath, Emery, The Bled, mewithoutYou, Poison the Well, Mayday Parade, Gym Class Heroes, Pierce the Veil, Brandtson, Jonezetta and had two stints on the Vans Warped Tour. After foraying into tour management and artist management from 2009 - 2013, Aaron has narrowed his focus to session and "drummer for hire" work. Venturing into blogging and writing a memoir in 2015, Aaron has high hopes of writing about food, travel and baseball. For the time being it seems he will have to stick to music writing in order to please his current audience and actually make some bucks.

By Christopher Lott BACKSTAGE tells the story of As Cities Burn's formative years up to the release of their debut record through drummer Aaron's Lunsford badmouth lens. Aaron Lunsford, or "Shy Guy" as my mother calls him, is a misunderstood and cryptic artist. On stage he has been known to wear his own band shirt. He bleeds America, baseball, obscure Seinfeld references, anxiety, Jimmy Eat World, and Budweiser, while inventing a hyper creative drum style in heavy music he seems hardly aware of. This book is less about the Christian Music Scene, and more about what it like to be Aaron Lunsford : an ultra-sensitive badboy.BACKSTAGE takes you through the whole process of a hardcore touring band before Napster came and ate out the music scene's heart. Aaron explores how these protected Christian kids evolved into their early twenties while living an unconventional life on the road. There are uncircumcised penis tricks, tour shenanigans involving feces, and existential moments of clarity about life and one's position in the universe. Aaron's prose is brutal, colloquial, direct, and laugh out loud funny. We get to swirl around in his neurotic mind, and understand a bit more about Aaron's relationship to art, drumming, money, suicide, Seinfeld, stardom. If you ever wondered what it's like to do figure eights around the country nonstop for months on end, and all the emotional damage that comes with it, look no further than this book. I read it in two sittings and laughed like a gigglyasaurus. Can't wait to read the next one!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The book to end all books and make successful authors rethink how they write. By Jodi Hume Being a kid from the post-hardcore scene days (and still stuck in that mentality and remisincing about the "good ol' days) I couldn't wait for this book to come out. My first time seeing ACB was with underoath in Lexington, KY... Only to have the show cancelled. The next time would be in the great city of Cincinnasty, OH. Except then known as Hawkboy and not really ACB. FINALLY seeing them with underoath on the "farewell" tour was everything I could had hoped for. The band was tight and as if they never stopped playing. I realize I have gone on and on about the band but I did so to only say this... Being in that scene and struggling with my own bands from this time era I understand a lot of what Aaron discusses here. So rather than be depressed about not making it big or not to have any records sold to be proud of and going on about how I can happily take refuge in someone else who has felt my pain... I'll just say that upon reading the first chapter for free on badchristian.com I was able to immediately bench press 600 pounds. I could speak 4 different languages also. My poor vision and lack of hearing was instantly and miraculously healed! My 1 year old son could instantly solve extensive algebraic equations. My beard grew long and more full than ever before. Yes. By only reading the first chapter. I can hardly wait to see what magic beans the book as a whole can offer. To Aaron I say, God bless and God speed. Although the world may not have appreciated what you guys did in the good ol' days.. I did. As a drummer you helped me shape my craft and bring in new elements I had never pushed myself to doing before. You are a god among men. And for that, I thank you. My wife will certainly appreciate me writing this on her Amazon account since I'm too lazy to make one. You understand. Thanks for the music, the inspiration, and talking about a new beer I've never tried.-Lane

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I found out about the Backstage book through the Bad Christian podcast which also runs its own record label ... By Sarah I never really listened to As Cities Burn but was a fan of many of the bands in their genre. I found out about the Backstage book through the Bad Christian podcast which also runs its own record label and publishing company (the one that put out this book). Aaron Lunsford was the drummer for the band As Cities Burn who recently had a 10 year reunion for their first album. I picked up the book on their reunion tour w/ Emery and wasn't able to put it down. I love books and documentaries that show the behind the scenes aspect of life on the road. Aaron does a good job of offering a blunt, honest, and transparent look into life on the road for a band that expresses their faith through their music. This book is anything from safe, censored, or G-rated. It offers a real look into the struggles, pitfalls, and hurt that faces musicians on the road. Even if you aren't a fan of As Cities Burn, but enjoy the heavy music scene, I highly suggest picking this book up. Their are stories that will make you laugh, cry, and say WTF!?!? Its entertaining and definitely a look into a world that is foreign to most of us.

Ever fascinated by the art of Sonnets, I set out to pursue this form of writing, in an attempt to revive the art and to challenge myself. Two forms I have delved into: Petrarchan and Shakespearean. After reading many of William Shakespeare's Sonnets, I found my work influenced by the quaint old fashioned manner of speaking. My aim is not to show off, but reflect that of God upon the lines I write. Here are my Sonnets. To God be all praise!

His facet is incredible, appreciated, and charming for the soft ears.I read his pondering mind, direful, enthusiastic, By Nithin Purple With his melancholic poetic mind, Timothy uses his quill to WRITE in an ARCHAIC sense with his highly flowing language. The rustic pictures that came across his mind did reflect into the form of a tranquil poetry. Sometimes his mind ascents somewhere it descents with a BYPAST fragrance or real essence of antique poetry. His facet is incredible, appreciated, and charming for the soft ears.I read his pondering mind, direful, enthusiastic, and cherished. You have talents that would make a sea change, a revolution ABOVE the unconventional youth, for you have natural endowment! —the way you used the elements in THE poetry are extreme like tinsels upon the bygone kingdom fall. Let this happiness continue among the SILENCE loving readers, to wait until your next new philosophies could ensure a change upon those curious minds.Yes, I do only heartily recommend this typical scented book, It has out passed the talents!!

This is a long, thorough book dealing with his theories of education. He was perhaps too much a man of his times to avoid insisting upon reading the ancient authors in the original Latin and Greek. One must in any case stand in awe of him.

After several years documenting the rise of China, award-winning Indian journalist Pallavi Aiyar moved to Brussels, the headquarters of the European Union, to discover a Europe plagued by a financial crisis, and unsure of its place in a world where new Asian challengers are eroding its old and comfortable certainties. With a lively mix of memoir, reportage and analysis, Aiyar takes the reader on a romp across the continent, meeting workaholic Indian diamond merchants in Antwerp, upstart Chinese wine barons in Bordeaux, Sikh farmhands in the Italian countryside, and Indian engineers running offshore energy turbines in Belgium.

In the Europe of today everything is in flux, as she discovers through conversations with Muslim immigrants struggling to define their identities, the austere bosses of Germany's world-beating companies, and bewildered Eurocrats struggling to keep the European Union from splitting apart. Examining the diverse challenges the continent faces today―among them, bloated welfare states, the accommodation of Islam, the European ambitions of Indian and Chinese entrepreneurs, and ancient intra-cultural fissures ― New Old World offers a panoramic look at Europe's first-world crisis from a unique Asian perspective.

New Old World: An Indian Journalist Discovers the Changing Face of Europe, by Pallavi Aiyar

Review

"I’ve been waiting for a book like this to be written, and now it exists. It’s fun, and full of good humor." ―Tyler Cowen

"Aiyar is sharp, funny and knowledgeable. She brings an outsider's skepticism to the much-discussed problems of the European Union and what she considers its declining global importance, leadership and economic strength." --Shelf Awareness

“Fresh insight into how Europeans might learn valuable lessons from developing countries.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“[Aiyar] brings a fresh, thought-provoking perspective to Europe's woes. Her trenchant and often humorous conversations with immigrants, entrepreneurs, politicians, and diplomats illuminate the paradoxes and inconsistencies of Europe's approach to multiculturalism... Through her travels around the continent, Aiyar is able to humanize those who are most frequently represented in the media as alarming statistics.” ―Publisher's Weekly

“With a fluidly pleasing writing style, the author has tackled a potentially dry topic in a way that keeps the reader engaged. A solid addition for anyone with an interest in political, cultural, or economic studies.” ―Library Journal

About the Author Pallavi Aiyar is an award winning journalist who has worked as a foreign correspondent for over a decade, reporting from China, Europe and Indonesia. She was awarded the Prem Bhatia memorial prize for excellence in political reporting for her dispatches from China, and she is the author of the 2008 China memoir, Smoke and Mirrors, which won the Vodafone-Crossword Popular Award. Her 2011 novel, Chinese Whiskers, a modern fable set in Beijing, was published in the United States, Italy, Belgium and India. She lives in Jakarta.

Fascinating informative account of contemporary Europe and its role in the world By Jaylia I know a lot more about select favorite periods in European history than I do about the continent today, but this informative, fascinating, and engaging book went a long way toward bringing me up to date. Indian journalist and author Pallavi Aiyar attended university in England, married a man from Spain, and has lived in and written about the changing world of China, making her perspectives on European economics, politics, and daily life particularly insightful and often eye opening and counterintuitive, at least to me. For instance, worries about contaminated milk and other such concerns aside, Aiyar and her husband generally found shopping much easier in communist China, where eager store owners will reopen their shops for a late customer, than they did in capitalist Belgium, where store schedules cater to employees who don’t want to work evenings or weekends rather than to customer convenience or any business bottom line. The New Old World combines detailed factual reportage of the people, places, and policies of Europe with Aiyar’s personal experiences of living in the capital of the European Union with her young family, which presents a fuller picture than either angle alone would do. Because of her background in China and India, Aiyar also writes fluently about Europe relative to those two rapidly emerging nations. Topics she addresses include the state of the EU, climate change politics, demographic shifts in industry, cultural legacies, immigration, Islam, the euro crisis and the regional squabbles it created, the lingering effects of colonialism, and the very strange political situation in Belgium and how that affected the party she gave in her mixed language Brussels neighborhood. Based on how much I enjoyed New Old World I purchased Aiyar’s earlier book on China, where she lived for seven plus years before Belgium. Aiyar has now moved with her husband and children to Jakarta--I can’t wait to read what she has to say about Indonesia.

Idea written before By Joel Holtz In 2009 the author moved to Brussels, Belgium, home of the European Union headquarters. She writes effectively about Muslim immigrants, the high unemployment and globalization affecting Europe, and an aging European population. The premise is excellent, but a better read is George Friedman's FLASHPOINTS: The Emerging Crisis In Europe. An easy read, but New Old World gets a bit repetitive after awhile and is tough to finish.

Clear-Eyed Perspective & some Surprises; Not only about Europe, but also about China and India By Gadget Fan This book is a great look at present-day Europe as it is. I was interested in this book because I hope to travel to Europe some day, however upon reading it, I see that it is just as valuable for understanding the shifting economy of the world and thus how I should think about my own finances. But what I liked about the book was its perspective, taking a new new look at things not as we wish them to be, but as they are.For example, most people know about the orthodox Jews in the diamond business in Antwerp. Did you know that three-quarters of that business is now run by Indian Jains (most from the same region in India), and that the largest Jain temple outside of India is in Antwerp? Everyone is aware of the numbers of third-world migrants now western countries, but did you know that there are actually more westerners who have moved to third world countries, than vice versa?Much of this book is about the clash between "capitalist China" and "socialist Europe" (the author's terms). It addresses the conflict between viewing hard work as a virtue among people from the third world, versus the various entitlements and protections from the vice of excessive work for Europeans. For example, the largest Indian diaspora outside of the UK is in Italy, where they all learn Italian in order to work, though the Walloons of Belgium would rather be on unemployment than learn Dutch in order to qualify for available jobs.Since this book is described as being rooted in her own experiences living in Europe, I was afraid that too much of it was going to be the diary style of writing that is so common today (e.g. "I visited so and so's office, after long journey ...... surrounded by piles of paper..... was animated and his eyes twinkled as he spoke about his work in ....."). Instead, this is clear eyed economic and social reporting from an international correspondent who not only writes about what she observed in Europe (as well as India and China), but also has delved into the numbers and pulled out some surprises. For example, most people are aware of the "powerhouse" of the German economy. But did you know that the per capita GDP of just Flanders (the Dutch part of Belgium) is higher than that of Germany, UK, or France? After this book, I'm going to keep my eye out for her other writing.

This is such an interesting and informative book, that I now collect copies as and when I can find them to give them as gifts. To see that this book is now out of print has taught me that it is indeed possible for the great and beautiful to fall into oblivion. Now I can understand how it Bach could be forgotten for two centuries. I wonder what other gems are buried deeply in the earth. Andrew Tardios.

"Can You Relate" is comprised of poetry that was written from the time that I was 14 up to the age of 19. Whenever I read poetry I begin to fall in love at the point that is relative to me. When I write, I write in hopes of relating to at least one person. I believe that love is the elevation of understanding. In love we grow with seeds of understanding. With that understanding comes such a great passion filled love and life is created. My goal in this book is to develop a relationship with my readers filled with an unbreakable bond of love and understanding.

Neison, educator and lexicographer, President of Smith College from 1917-39, Professor at Bryn Marw, Harvard and Columbia in Renaissance Literature, and A.H. Thorndike, American educator and specialist in Shakespeare and his works at Columbia, this book went through several revisions (it seems to have been a popular book), until the 1937 printing, which I have.Chapter 1 "Shakespeare's England and London", says it all in the first sentence, an idea I came away with quite a while ago. "Shakespeare lived in a period of change."He sure did, and they go on to categorize each area of change. These guys knew what they were talking about and how to write. The book has that cool English way of putting the title of the book on the left hand page top, and a summary of the page contents on the right hand page top.2. Biographical Facts and Traditions3. Shakespeare's Reading4. Chronology and Development5. The Elizabethan Drama6. The Elizabethan Theatre7. The Text of Shakespeare8. Questions of Authenticity9. Shakespeare since 1616 [year of his death]10. ConclusionThere are four Apprendices. This book should be required reading for any student of Shakespeare and his times. As the book points out, and many people forget, Shakespeare was affected by his environment, times, and circumstances.1913: Questions of authorship were devoted to Francis Bacon. Question of authorhip were only about 50 years old, not 300. Loney's Toon would not come out for another seven years. The only questions of authorship were if Shakespeare had used collaborats for several of his early plays, and Pericles, and a few narrative poems. Plus the Apocolyptic plays are discussed.Wonderful book to add to your collection.NOTE: Zero of one found this review helpful and left no comment. Wonder why? Of course, they are one of the nittering nabobs of negativism that don't believe that Shakespeare wrote the plays. They'd rather believe Anderson, Ogburn, and the other non-experts rather than the experts, like the authors of this book.Their minds are already made up beforehand. But if you want to know more about Shakespeare, his job, his company, fellow playrights, theater, stages, Elizabethan London, etc., this is an excellent book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great gift By Carol Blank In his introduction, author Jon M. Sweeney explains that the stories of Dickens often rely on satire, irony, and skepticism regarding religious faith. Sweeney tags Dickens as “one of the few great novelists of any era who was thoroughly immersed in the Bible as well as the Book of Common Prayer.”The book is formatted in 50, two-page spreads. The first page bears a quote from Dickens; the second consists of a Bible verse from “The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language.” A single title is used for both pages, and each contains a reference to the passage. For example:In Collapsing in Our Tears, the Dickens quote from Great Expectations urges us not to be ashamed of tears, but to see them as “rain upon the blinding dust of earth, overlying our hard hearts,” which leads us to greater sorrow. The Scripture reference is Mark 14:66-72 in which Peter weeps after denying Jesus three times. In Practicing Real Love, the Dickens quote is from A Tale of Two Cities. As he awaits his sacrificial death, Sydney Carton says, “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done...” The Scripture reference is I John 3:16-20, in which Christ’s laying down his life for us is our model for showing love to our brothers and sisters. This work, like others in the Literary Portals to Prayer series, would make a great gift for those earnest about prayer, whether or not they are familiar with Dickens.

In his last novel, published less than a year before his untimely death at the age of forty-five, D.H. Lawrence takes up the theme of Christ's resurrection and his final days on Earth. Lawrence recounts Christ's agonizing journey from death back to life with an alarmingly proffane realism, depicting the tale from teh moment of his initial painful awakening to his eventual redemptive sexual relationship with the priestess of the pagan goddess Isis. The story expands beyond its Christian roots to explore and embrace Lawrence's abiding faith in the life-force apparent in every aspect of the natural world. For his final work, Lawrence has encapsulated a lifetime of extraordinary vision into one profound and exquisite parable.

By Michael Stephens Anyone who has a passing interest or knowledge of the origins of Christian Myth will recognize those roots in this final masterpiece by D.H. Lawrence. It is amazing how prescient Lawrence was here. Remember, this was written some 20 years before the discovery of the Gnostic Gospels at Nag Hammadi. Although gnosticism was known of, and to some degree what some of the gnostics believed about Christ, it was rarely acknowledged beyond the study of heresy within the Catholic and Protestant seminaries. Laypeople knew almost nothing of the origins of Christianity. That most original Christians had very different ideas about their Savior, and that indeed many believed that He was a sexual creature (and some even a homosexual), was blasphemy of the highest degree. And that many also equated Christ and Mary with the myth of pagan Isis and Horas (which many today believe is the real precusor of Chritianity), would have been unthinkable even as late as the 1930s. But Lawrence was an autodidact when it came to religion, and like many autodidactics, had some very strange and original ideas about that and Christianity in particular. Essentially a mystical deist, he found much to despise in organized, modern Christianity. Like so many of his generation, he blamed it, correctly, as one of the main causes of the First World War and the ills of the modern world. He also had an abiding interest in pagan religions of all types (read his The Plumed Serpent), but especially Roman/Etruscan paganism. How much he knew of the Egyptian Isis-Horas/Mary-Jesus connection I have no idea, but it was probably intuitive: Isis was one of the most popular godesses of late-pagan Rome, which Lawrence was very familiar. Did he know that certain early Christians also worshipped Isis and, indeed, believed in a sexual union between the two? I can't say. But knowing of Lawrence's interest in "mystical" sexuality, mixed with his other interests, it was probably natural that he would combine these into one of the most daring novels of all time. While simple-minded, prejudice readers might find this work blasphemous, it is in fact one of the most original and exciting novels written about Christ. This has none of the nonsense of Kazantzakis'Last Temptation of Christ, which was essentially a reverent and wholly orthodox work (but which also has an element of original Christian philosophy -- and thus the unjust controversy). Lawrence dispenses with all that, and somehow discovered and revealed the pagan heart at the core of much Christian philosophy. In his tale of a Christ who "survives" the crucifixion, has a sexual relationship with a priestess of Isis, and then renounces aesthetism for the wordly pleasures of the flesh, Lawrence typically and bravely went for the jugular, while also retaining his elegant, inimitable style. What emerges is one of his most profound and poetic works, and not surprisingly, as he was to die a year later, also pretty much sums up his philosophies in one, neat little package. If you have the chance to read this small, but rich and powerful work, you will have discovered one of the true masterpieces of one of the greatest writers of all time.

He does not want them to touch him. He needs to move away from this life. He wanders onto the property of a priestess of Isis. She believes him to be Osiris and she is to heal his wounds and bear a child with him. This is how Christ leaves behind his body and blood. The erotic interplay between Christ and the priestess evokes in him a revelation that this is the mystery of life that the Father has not allowed him to experience. In Lawrence's day, the demythologizing of Christ and the erotic interplay underline incarnation. Today it seems a bit much. Forcing Christ into sexual liaisions betrays an emphasis on an erotic gnosticism apparent in contemporary "spiritual" movements. But at the time this novel was written, it may have had some relevance in challenging mystical applications of the Christ myth. The writing is beautiful.

As historians often say that students of American history "must get right with Lincoln," so to must participants in Western culture "get right with Jesus." As a man, little is known of Jesus. Of the 1800 or so sayings attributed to Jesus in the Bible, biblical scholars have whittled that number down to less than 100 sayings that they believe to actually be his. As such, the man is cloaked almost completely in the legend that has been built on his name. This book explores that moment when those two identities crossed--Jesus's resurrection from the dead. Tackled in Lawrence's distinctive style, "The Man Who Died" is far more provocative than works such as Mailer's "The Gospel According to the Sun" and is reminiscent of Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ." It confronts the received biblical narrative and shatters the narrow existential walls that limit the spiritual exploration that Jesus's life story demands. It is not just a must read, it is a must own. You will want to go back to this often, because it's never the same book twice.
