Road Trip, by Mark Rozema

Review “In these essays of exploration and quest, Mark Rozema relates tales of danger and exhilaration, serenity and solace, the sustenance of his own experiences and those of the people he meets travelling ‘a road that pulls you in . . . wind and an aching blue sky . . . .’ Rozema’s easy, narrative prose, filled with the names and details of plants, mountains, rivers, animals, the towns he passes through, often becomes beautifully lyrical, touching the power of what wild land and sky together mean to the human soul.” —Pattiann Rogers, author of Firekeeper, Generations and Holy Heathen Rhapsody“In Road Trip, essayist Mark Rozema takes us along on a journey over several decades, as he comes to terms with change and loss, including losing his father to Alzheimer’s disease. In prose clear and luminous as ‘stones at the bottom of the river,’ he reminds us of the power of place as he describes growing up outside Flagstaff, Arizona. From there we range to the North Cascades, then to a cabin outside Fairbanks, Alaska, finding grace in unexpected places along the way. Next time you take a road trip, you’ll want Mark Rozema at the wheel; his lyric, engaging prose offers readers many moments of stunning beauty and much well-earned wisdom.” —Holly J. Hughes, author of Sailing by Ravens“The best writing, like a deep breath and a clear thought, seems effortless.  Such are the essays in Road Trip. Rozema covers ground—a lot of it. Witness Alaska’s Resurrection River ‘as it tumbles through wind-sheared tundra.’ ‘Glissade down narrow snow chutes’ surrounding Washington’s Enchantment Basin. Tour the sifting cinder hill country northeast of Flagstaff. In these essays, landscape details are precise and sensual but unstudied, delivered by an introspective writer who’s not just ‘been there,’ but in memory, desire, and regret, lives there. Take this trip.  Let Mark Rozema guide you into ‘a world of curves, where every turn leads to surprise.’ You’ll find such beauty here.”   Ann Cummins, author of Yellowcake and Red Ant House.

About the Author Mark Rozema was raised in the mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona. His formative years were spent in the bed of a pickup truck, careening down dusty Reservation roads, exploring remote canyons with his dingo-Aussie mutt.   Adulthood found him on farms, fishing boats, fire lines, in group homes, and in classrooms. After leaving Arizona, he wandered through Utah, Alaska, and Montana, eventually landing in Washington, where he now tutors students at Edmonds Community College. He received an MFA from the University of Montana in 1990. His writing celebrates the ways in which identity is shaped by relationships to landscape, community and family. His essays can be found in various journals, including Flyway, Weber Studies, Isthmus, Under The Sun, Sport Literate, and Superstition Review. He lives in Shoreline, Washington, with his wife, daughter, and two dogs. Road Trip is his first book.

This book actually takes us on two journeys, one external the other internal. With his gifted sense of humor and his extraordinary observational skills we are treated to the beauty and color of the people and places he visits. Mark also takes us on a relatable journey of self discovery. Again, his sense of humor along with his depth of thought and honest self reflection was as beautiful as the places he visited,

Leraas A very nice little book of autobiographical essays with discussion weaved in them about how life is and was effected by the events. His selections are upbeat and fun to read. His insights are warm and unassuming and often helpful.Several of his essays concern his boyhood and it is clear that he was a real red blooded American boy who was appreciated by his parents. He would have fit in nicely in my neighborhood which was no where near his native Arizona. This book is highly recommended for a fun read. I found it real pleasure.

By iriswriter In Road Trip, Mark reveals much of himself—his loves, his questions, and his certainties—as he takes us to the places he treasures and where he explores family and friendship and change and loss (including losing his father to Alzheimer’s disease), all with humor, generosity and a spirit of adventure. There’s something for everyone in this slim collection, beautifully written with vivid descriptions and thought-provoking insights.

The Greatest Surprise of All By Kathryn L Iverson This lovely recount of Davis's discovery has a touch of mystical realism overlain with down-to-earth persistence to get at the truth. She allowed readers hints of the coming prize braided with the emotion of the realization that the man she "knew" to be her father was not, as well as the delight of the discovery of "new" relatives. The unfolding was accomplished with clarity and humor. I highly recommend this book to all who love memoirs and as an insight into the potential impact of DNA testing.

The story follows Lucinda's journey through the world of genealogy leading her to discover MANY relatives previously unknown. An exciting read - keep a pencil and paper handy to track the clues as they are revealed.

The ultimate voyage By Mrs AP Langen I found it a fascinating tale of the extraordinary life, conditions and hardships that men put themselves through in the name of 'service to their country'. To venture to sea in a wooden ship that today would probably be considered unseaworthy before it even set out. To be permanently wet and cold, living in the most crowded squalid stinking conditions and not even well fed. The physical demands of attempting to go around the Horn in the wrong season, in ships that were leaking and falling apart, with a crew many of whom were dying anyway. It is a remarkable story of an epic voyage, well written from notes, log books and personal experiences and very readable.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Madame Bovary, French Edition By R. A. Gaskill A fat book that easily goes everywhere on Kindle. In combination with Dictionaire francais de definitions (definitions are also in French), which defines any word to the right of the cursor and which installs free, reading in French is streamlined for those who otherwise must pause to look up words. The Kindle is the perfect medium for anyone fluent but less than native in a foreign language. And in this case, Flaubert shines in his own French, whereas he plods along in translation. The descriptive passages become a pleasure instead of a drag. And one more thing: it's a great story with tremendous insight into love and into the mind of Mme. Bovary.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very good writing By Chuck I'm at slightly above (marginally at best) high school level French, and with Collins dictionary for kindle - bought for I think $6 or maybe a little more, and with the Dictionnaire de l'Academie Francais (available for free - all in French), I can get through this book pretty well, though it'll take me about a year to finish it as I'm taking my time and looking up all the words. But like the other reviews point out there is no comparison between the French and any English translation - even for someone like me - I get a lot more out of the original French. The writing is excellent - story moves along at a very fast pace - the descriptions all have to do with what is going on no fluff (not like Thackery, for instance who describes things to fill up pages it seems). I'm on Chapter 9 now of the first part, and so have 25 more chapters after this one, and need to look some more at chapter 7 and 8, but I'm getting there.I think this book is one of the best for learning French as he has a lot of vocabulary that is repeating so you learn it better as well as phrases that together mean something different than what the words indidually mean, and the translations I have help - the newest one available on kindle and the older one by Elanor Marx Aveling - and those help me when I am fading as I go along - which is often.

Read Ebook The Black Dwarf, by Walter Scott

The story is set just after the Union of Scotland and England (1707), in the Liddesdale hills of the Scottish Borders, familiar to Scott from his work collecting ballads for The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. The main character is based on David Ritchie, whom Scott met in the autumn of 1797. In the tale, the dwarf is Sir Edward Mauley, a hermit regarded by the locals as being in league with the Devil, who becomes embroiled in a complex tale of love, revenge, betrayal, Jacobite schemes and a threatened forced marriage. Scott began the novel well, "but tired of the ground I had trode so often before... I quarrelled with my story, & bungled up a conclusion." Critics and public found it poor in comparison with its popular companion Old Mortality. One of the harshest reviews was in the Quarterly Review, written anonymously by Scott himself. The introduction to The Black Dwarf attributes the work to Jedediah Cleishbotham, whom Scott had invented as a fictional editor of the Landlord series. It is here that we have the most complete view of this character.

Patrick Killough Sir Walter Scott's short novel of 1816, THE BLACK DWARF, begins by presenting the back side of a tapestry: colors dull, patterns obscure. Mysterious, too, but not without clues leading from one isolated insight to another. Only at novel's end is the tapestry turned and all piercingly revealed.Let's look at the mysteries as they appear to the principal female of the BLACK DWARF, beautiful teen-age Miss Isabella Vere of Ellieslaw Castle. What does she know of herself and her family? Her long dead mother is buried in the castle's chapel in a tomb of Italianate beauty (Ch. 17). Her wealthy, stern father is a political schemer, aiming to become more powerful to restore the male line of the Stuarts. To that end he is pressuring Isabella to wed the odious Jacobite, Sir Frederick Langley. Yet Isabella herself is fonder of a young nobleman named Earnscliff. She is being visited by two cousins, Nancy and Lucy Ilderton. Lucy in particular knows that Isabella hates the one and loves the other. There is also some dark but hushed up ancient stain on Isabella's father's honor; he was almost killed in a brawl when his best friend, Sir Edward Mauley, saved his life by slaying his opponent. After a year's imprisonment for manslaughter, Sir Edward disappeared. Meanwhile Isabella's father had married Isabella's mother, a kinswoman of Sir Edward.Isabella unknowingly meets her destiny one day in 1707 riding in the wilds of Scotland near the English border with her two cousins. They come upon a tiny hut recently constructed on Mucklestane Moor. They had heard that it was built by a strong but hideous misanthropic dwarf who calls himself Elshender the Recluse. In the few months he has been there, despite his constantly invoking the deserved doom of the entire human race, he has done much grudgingly offered good to the local people by way of healing and advice. From them he has earned from the names Canny Elshie and the Wise Wight of Mucklestane Moor (Ch. 5).The dwarf dismisses with sarcasm the cousins after Lucy offers to pay to have her fortune told. But Elshender detains Miss Vere, whom he calls Isabel. He has known her parents.Does he also know her, Isabella asks. "Yes; this is the first time you have crossed my waking eyes, but I have seen you in my dreams." He added that he was no common fortune-teller but knew that her life was beset with real and potential evils. These included "unsuccessful love, crossed affections, the gloom of a convent, or an odious alliance." Her sad situation combined with her kind words to him made the ugly little man shed a rare tear. Those tears had been a good deed done to him by her. The dwarf rewarded her with a rose from his garden and the promise that if ever she needed him, she should deliver to him in person that rose or one of its petals.Who is this Wise Wight of Mucklestane Moor? Why does he except Isabella Vere from his general self-pitying loathing of the human race. It would spoil the ending to provide more clues. Suffice it to say that THE BLACK DWARF is a masterly study of what happens when a deformed but sensitive, generous young nobleman is betrayed by fiancee and best friend, loses his mind, partially recovers it and is caught up in a planned rebellion of Scots against Queen Anne and the recently created United Kingdom. -OOO-

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Read for Today By R. Lee What a pity that young people and some adults can't go back to the Classics for novels such as Sir Walter Scott's "The Black Dwarf."Slightly difficult to become involved in but after the first two chapters it starts to become exciting.Better than "Dungeons and Dragons" but not as good as "Ivanhoe" yet with some imagination it is very engaging.Scott is a master of description and forces the reader to get into his English syntax which is not familiar to Americans. When I read one of today's popular novels I feel as if a 15 year old wrote it.Definitely recommend this book!!!!!!!!!Also any of Walter Scotts other novels.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not your typical Walter Scott story By Edward Hetzler Many of the characters speak in dialect. This makes the Black Dwarf challenging to read. It also requires familiarity with 18th century English / Scottish history to understand what motivates some of the characters. The story is slow to start, but once you get past the beginning it moves along at a good pace. The plot is thin for a romance novel and revolves around hidden identities and misunderstandings. It is more like a Jane Austen story then a Walter Scott story. This is a great book for learning to use the power of the Kindle to define words and look up background information.

We both had ancestors serve in the Confederacy and this book was just too cool to pass up. The actual book looks different than the photo. It's a paperback with a white cover and black lettering. It's a surprisingly thick book. Very much worth the money! If you're thinking about buying this, do it. You will not be disappointed!

It looks like a book was photo copied and then bound together. Many pages are hard or impossible to read.

These pages hold a lifetime of lessons learned about love, life and relationships. Poetic Justice is not a typical book designed for reading from beginning to end but as individual pages that beckon your soul at a particular moment in time.      Chapters are organized by topic, not chronologically. Like a diary entry, each poem represents my innermost insights and feelings during a moment in time. Each entry is anonymous because lessons live on unlike some relationships.      I didn't write these poems, they wrote me. When I was overwhelmed with emotion and didn't think anyone could hear me or understand, the words poured through me onto the pages . . . sometimes between the blinding tears of heartbreak and betrayal, sometimes fueled by liquid courage on bar napkins, sometimes in the depths of depression and sometimes by the light of love.      Whether you're inspired by music, dance, painting or prose, express yourself. Everyone has a story someone in the world needs to hear . . . for inspiration, insight or to know they're not alone. This is part of my story. Thank you for listening.

A TIME OF CHANGE: Poems by John McArthur, 2nd edition is a wonderful collection from the Author and Playwright's early days. These reviews were included on the back cover of the original 1973 Canadian edition: “John McArthur is a man who has lived life to the full. And it shows in his work. He has talent for surprising us, one never knowing which new twist he will take on a traditional-sounding subject. McArthur’s writing is at times romantic, at times misanthropic, often sensual, sometimes even violent. He touches that bitter-sweet core of our emotions, arousing those long-buried remembrances of love, affection and — yes — even hate. John McArthur is a true Canadian talent.” John South, Editor, MacLean Hunter Publications Toronto, Ontario. “McArthur’s poetry is a lyrical experience, unspoiled by vague symbolism or some popular plaintive revolt. Here beauty is not seen in emotional triumph but in emotion itself, as Man gropes eternally for infinite love and compassion, glimpsing it only in the end from the narrow window of his finite life.” David W. Ross, Author, critic and formerly member of the English faculty of Columbia University, New York. “They are poems that have been written to be read by a man who thinks (how can I put it) with his mouth. This is a performer’s score, probably a great performer’s score.” Michael Macklem, Publisher Oberon Press, Ottawa, Ont

My hope is that this book will be an encouragement for all caregivers, especially those who are facing the prospect of caregiving for the first time. Caregiving can seem overwhelming and lonely. I know there were plenty of times I felt like throwing in the towel as I was caring for my husband, but I knew I couldn't. No one understands caregiving and the problems that can arise like as someone who has also cared for a loved one. Hopefully this book will give anyone a more creative approach to their journey through the caregiving process.

Harry's tales and insight into the game he's lived and breathed for 50 years—an immensely entertaining history of British football "When a man walks on to a pitch there’s always a chance something magic can happen, that’s what keeps us coming back . . . " Harry Redknapp shares a lifetime’s experience of obsessing over soccer, during which he has seen it all first hand—the good, the bad, and the unbelievable. Harry started in an age where players were ordinary blokes who might live on the same street as you and earn a similar wage and now manages in an era of player power, multi-million pound wages and teams assembled from around the globe. As he shares stories of some of the legends and journeymen he played with, coached, argued with, and drank with, Harry picks a team for each decade from the 1950s to the present. He gets to the heart of what was right and wrong with each era and explores the changes in the game from lifestyle to tactics. He weaves his choices together with unforgettable tales from the training pitches, boot room,s and card schools. There are tales of the untutored genius of Duncan Edwards and Tom Finney; legendary tough Scots like Bobby Collins, Dave Mackay, and Billy Bremner; the world beaters of 1966; unpredictable one-off wizards from Sir Stanley Matthews to Matt Le Tissier; natural-born goalscorers from Greaves to Dalglish; and the greatest foreign players to grace our game from Trautmann to Bergkamp. It is one of the best informal histories of the British game you’ll ever read.

By Amazon Customer Al Love him or hate him, Harry Redknap knows football, makes sense and should be listened to by ANYONE interested in the game. If he had been England's manager, I can't help feeling that they would be a better side. I liked the anecdotes, I liked the reasoning, I liked the history/memories and I liked the honesty. A very entertaining read. I highly recommend.

The book made me sad, nostalgic, smile all at once. Such a shame today's players and managers see themselves as celebrities and out of the reach of the average fan. Great book. If you love football, regardless of who you support - buy it.

Excerpt from The Life of Marie Antoinette, Queen of FranceThe principal authorities for the following work are the four volumes of Correspondence published by M. Arneth, and the six volumes published by M. Feuillet de Conches. M. Arneth's two collections contain not only a number of letters which passed between the queen, her mother the Empress-queen (Maria Teresa), and her brothers Joseph and Leopold, who successively became emperors after the death of their father; but also a regular series of letters from the imperial embassador at Paris, the Count Mercy d'Argenteau, which may almost be said to form a complete history of the court of France, especially in all the transactions in which Marie Antoinette, whether as dauphiness or queen, was concerned, till the death of Maria Teresa, at Christmas, 1780. The correspondence with her two brothers, the emperors Joseph and Leopold, only ceases with the death of the latter in March, 1792.The collection published by M. Feuillet de Conches has been vehemently attacked, as containing a series of clever forgeries rather than of genuine letters. And there does seem reason to believe that in a few instances, chiefly in the earlier portion of the correspondence, the critical acuteness of the editor was imposed upon, and that some of the letters inserted were not written by the persons alleged to be the authors. But of the majority of the letters there seems no solid ground for questioning the authenticity.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Queen is shown to be a high-minded and virtuous lady, very brave and overcoming her early frivolity. The book is easy to read and I recommend it as a great introduction to the life of this most controversial Queen.

9 of 12 people found the following review helpful. The book was OK By N. Atwood The book caught my attention because it was a bargain at $.99. It's VERY wordy - concise is not in Yonge's vocab - so you must be VERY patient. All in all, I learned the heart-breaking story of the queen and her family and that's what I was after. As far as objectivity, however, the author seems quite taken with M.A.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. more factual than movie By Pam Thomas liked the movie with Kristen Dunst especially since it moved much faster than a book ;) but the movie as usual is not entirely historically factual so I wanted to read about the subject to get a more clear idea of the time and events

Born in Glasgow to Italian café owners, Angela Boni, brilliant graduate in Italian, and student of the Fascist professor Ernesto Grillo, celebrates her twenty-first birthday before preparing to go out to see relatives in Italy and to work for an aristocratic landowner. Her aunt and uncle live on a small farm under the protective shadow of the Benedictine monastery of Montecassino. Angela has an idyllic life among the mules which her uncle Benigno, a mountain guide, uses. In the gatherings with wine and song she becomes attracted to Augusto, a passionate enemy of Mussolini's Fascist regime and a committed Communist. Angela's sojourn is supposed to be for a year, when she returns to Glasgow in September 1939 to prepare a doctoral thesis on Dante supervized by Professor Grillo. But the outbreak of war keeps her in Italy, and as the Germans fortify the area to prevent the Allied army pushing north, with the liberation of Rome the prize, Angela becomes one of many refugees in the monastery, under threat from the guns of both sides. This is a dramatic story of love, dedication and faith in the face of terror and destruction, especially when the massed bombers arrive overhead.

Yet, this inspirational book lifts the reader from Italy's sad and despairing past to one of spiritual joy. This is a stunning and truly beautiful book. Reviewed by Peter Adamson

Down to earth, with inspirational insight on his life, family and the many hundreds of people who shaped his career path including his spiritual dedication to Jesus. Denny "hones-in" on the reality of traveling a road of making music a career in a way that will keep you reading on. The amazing people he came to know and lost, to the ones that are still a huge part of his life are all here.
