By Victoria Aihar 54 corazones unidos por esta causa maravillosa, donde no hay otro hilo conductor más que el amor en todas sus formas. Encontramos a lo largo de sus más de 600 páginas, pensamientos, poesía, cuentos, relatos románticos y eróticos; con los que reiremos, reflexionaremos, lloraremos, nos enamoraremos y odiaremos. By Jim Bennett In the first of some sixty-eight poems you will meet The Chair, an excellent introduction to Sims and his non-trivial view of what appears simple. Conversely Words of One Syllable shows (off) what can be done within a strict limitation.Sims will make you think. For example, in I Died Yesterday, the narrative tells of disaster in first person. What hits you later is, that the earlier examples are probably wartime or civil conflict, but the last one could be in any modern city.For a marvelous piece of interpersonal tension, turn to Recrimination. In a sonnet, no less. Followed by The Difference and Valediction, also tours de force of relationships in trouble.More light-hearted is Seasonal Love, which has smooth rhymes you notice on a second reading.A major favourite here is the longer narrative poem Pharisees, which is told in first person. Here a few quotes to whet your interest: “We all saw it, all of us who were there, /caught in a bubble of blue morning, /glinting in sunlight and swaying in the still air.” Then this: “Later in the day, when we returned /and told of our encounter, the smart sophists /and clever Pharisees got down to work...” followed by this: “And so what we had all seen, or thought we had seen, /crouched for a while in crannies of the mind, /but by evening, for most of us, had slipped away...” By the end of this poem, you might think back to the title of this volume. The unusual will not be believed by those whose expertise consists of knowing the usual, and that’s that.Even in the short poem Numbers Sims puts a life experience into your mind. Two becomes three.For another such experience turn to Soldier, where we find this (spoiler alert: major quote follows) “He went away to a war /made him tough and wily /put inches on his chest /to hang a medal from /taught him cap-badge Latin /potted regimental history /bizarre geographies of bar and brothel /drilled him in simple skills /with bayonet and grenade //when fully trained/unleashed him on a hillside/ in the crump and panic of a battle /among psalms of singing shrapnel...” The poem goes on a great deal from there, and the story continues.Scrolling for the tiny carps? maybe a typo and maybe an echo. In short, nothing. Back to the good stuff.For a fascinating life story, turn to My Hollywood Upbringing. Sims can certainly use a theme as a vehicle for a fine narrative poem.For a personal experience (from a woman’s point of view, no less) turn to Men in My Life. Told in rhyming couplets; I should mention that Sims can rhyme very well when he chooses.I am not quite half way through my notes. I found many more fine poems in this collection, including some shorter whimsy ones which are a lot of fun. I could continue this review and easily double its length, but I think that this is not necessary. You should now have a decent feel for the quality and content of this work.Back to the star count. My personal guidelines, when doing an ‘official’ KBR review, are as follows: five stars means, roughly equal to best in genre. Rarely given. Four stars means, extremely good. Three stars means, definitely recommendable. I am a tough reviewer. I try hard to be consistent. This is an exceptional work. Five stars was an easy decision. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a small masterpiece By Rennie Walker Maurice Nicholl, who wrote this under the nom de plume of Martin Swayne, was one of the great Fourth Way teachers of the 20th century. Nicholl wrote fiction in the years roughly 1911 to 1924. This is "science fiction". And it is science fiction of the type and style written in this period in the UK. Its style is quintessentially "British", its pace Edwardian, its techniques simple yet setting up a protagonism between points of view spiritual and materialistic. And it is a flowing, compelling story. Except for the techniques used to make manifest the ending.The story of The Blue Germ is simple and intriguing. Two doctors, one Russian and one English, discover a bacillus with powerful properties. The story begins with Dr Harden tripping over his black cat, hitting his head, and, in the consciousness shock that follows he comes to the perception of an immense scientific discovery. Together with his colleague Sarakoff they perfect the Sarakoff-Harden bacillus. The properties of which are ... to kill all other germs in the human body. And the consequence of this ... well ... human beings will be immortal. Unless they are actively killed, of course.So, what better way for an Edwardian scientist to test his "theory" than to test it out ... in real life. And so the pair of them introduce the bacillus into the water supply of Birmingham in Midlands England. The bacillus flourishes and creates the "Blue Disease", since fingernails and eye whites turn blue. Together with the fact that all those who are currently ill have their illnesses removed at a fast pace.Well ... huge changes in "society" will be needed ... and ... how will different characters and personalities react to the prospect of immortality? Hah!The Blue Germ is actually a compelling story well told. The conciseness of it is pretty similar to that of Michael Crichton. Style too, stripping away the Edwardian-ness of Nicholl writing as Swayne. And the story ... well ... there are many stories about "germs" in our modern consciousness. We seem to love them! The Blue Germ would make a marvelous, Crichton-esque movie. The ending? Forgive the book the ending - it is "poor". But getting there is not! Enjoy it. No guns, car chases, electronic eavesdropping, mayhem-in-general. What would you do if you were told that you are now immortal ... exactly, exactly as you are (age, appearance etc.) right now.

Nice Little Story By halfbanana I was curious about this author because of his Gurdjieff connections and because the book was free, I was like, why the heck not?I also used to be a fan of certain Victorian English literature (as a teenager) so it was kind of fun to be brought back into that familiar old world.Nicoll is not a great storyteller nor, apparently, a great thinker, but he did write a nice little fable that's entertaining enough and explores a few mildly interesting philosophical themes. If that appeals to you, you might pick it up. If not, I can't say you'll be missing out.

By Jack Of Alltrades If you like your science fiction on the intellectual side, this one might be for you. This was written by a psychologist and philosopher and it's easy to tell, because the novel is about the way human beings react to becoming nearly immortal. Since human nature never has and never will change, it's as germane today as it was then. Keep in mind it was written a century ago and you have an enjoyable read waiting for you.

About the Author Honoré de Balzac, né Honoré Balzac à Tours le 20 mai 1799 (1er prairial an VII du calendrier républicain), et mort à Paris le 18 août 1850 (à 51 ans), est un écrivain français. Romancier, dramaturge, critique littéraire, critique d'art, essayiste, journaliste et imprimeur, il a laissé l'une des plus imposantes œuvres romanesques de la littérature française, avec plus de quatre-vingt-dix romans et nouvelles parus de 1829 à 1855, réunis sous le titre La Comédie humaine. À cela s'ajoutent Les Cent Contes drolatiques, ainsi que des romans de jeunesse publiés sous des pseudonymes et quelque vingt-cinq œuvres ébauchées. Il est un maître du roman français, dont il a abordé plusieurs genres, du roman philosophique avec Le Chef-d'œuvre inconnu au roman fantastique avec La Peau de chagrin ou encore au roman poétique avec Le Lys dans la vallée. Il a surtout excellé dans la veine du réalisme, avec notamment Le Père Goriot et Eugénie Grandet, mais il s'agit d'un réalisme visionnaire, que transcende la puissance de son imagination créatrice. Comme il l'explique dans son Avant-Propos à la La Comédie humaine, il a pour projet d'identifier les « Espèces sociales » de son époque, tout comme Buffon avait identifié les espèces zoologiques. Ayant découvert par ses lectures de Walter Scott que le roman pouvait atteindre à une « valeur philosophique », il veut explorer les différentes classes sociales et les individus qui les composent, afin « d'écrire l’histoire oubliée par tant d’historiens, celle des mœurs » et « faire concurrence à l'état civil ». L'auteur décrit la montée du capitalisme et l'absorption par la bourgeoisie d'une noblesse incapable de s'adapter aux réalités nouvelles. Intéressé par les êtres qui ont un destin, il crée des personnages plus grands que nature, au point qu'on a pu dire que, dans ses romans, « chacun, même les portières, a du génie ». Ses opinions politiques sont ambiguës : s’il affiche des convictions légitimistes en pleine Monarchie de Juillet, il s’est auparavant déclaré libéral, et défendra les ouvriers en 1840 et en 1848, même s'il ne leur accorde aucune place dans ses romans. Tout en professant des idées conservatrices, il a produit une œuvre admirée par Marx et Engels, et qui invite par certains aspects à l'anarchisme et à la révolte.

Although events happen during periods of about 200 years ago, the human psychology and emotions are still valid, especially the inner sufferings of a woman from youth to the end of her life.Highly recommend to everyone - singles as well as married ones, women as well as men.
