A Brilliant and Touching Memoir and Love Story By Lynette Sperber I only wish I could be as articulate as this incredible author has been in expressing so many thoughts and feelings I have experienced over the years. I have to acknowledge I knew nothing about any Greek mythology and certainly not about Psyche and Eros. What a story! Thank you and kudos to Deanna McKinstry-Edwards for making this story so accessible and understandable to those of us who are not familiar with this world and this love. It will be with great pleasure that I send this book to a number of my gal friends whom I know will also respond and relate to this story. How brilliant of Deanna to weave and integrate her own very personal story into this. And how brave to be willing to expose herself in such a selfless and personal way. Deanna, you are my heroine. Thank you!

By Maggie fedro I started reading this book late last night and just couldn't put it down! This is such a heartfelt tribute to Ms. Voohries home town and to all of the people who have helped shape her life. It is beautifully written and flows from one colorful scene to the next with great ease. I cannot wait to share this book with my children!

"A colorful, inviting story of a lifetime of courageous encounters, tragedy and ultimate victory" By Dr. Joy Lawson Davis Alice Voorhies takes the reader into the historical and personal life of growing up in Southwestern Louisiana. The calm, yet colorful tone is easy to follow, entertaining and thought-provoking as the author slowly, but swiftly takes the reader into the depths of life of her community. Touching upon her life of meager beginnings that was enriched by friends, history, tragedy, and victorious encounters the reader wants to stay 'in the book' to find out more about being a magnolia, riding along the powerful Atchafalaya basin under the mysterious cypress, braving the waters, and the intellectual and creative genius of the people she encounters along the way. This book is a great read for lovers of history, the personal narrative or just for someone who wants to read a well-written autobiography from a time and place simultaneously familiar yet distant from that of most of us. I found the author's style masterful as she incorporated experiences of national significance (the day she saw JFK at a local parade and ironically saw another man whose life intersected with his within the same time frame), the students whose lives helped her to become a great educator, and so many other personally impactful events in a way that helped the book feel like a historical novel.Colorful, insightful, lively, personable, intricately detailed are just a few of the words that come to mind to describe this sweetly woven tale of a life well lived and a woman who does it 'her way'. In just a few hours, I cried, welped with surprise, and laughed again and again. The book concludes with personal creed that I believe will give courage and wise counsel to any reader for generations to come.

By Jolie Blonde I'd had a difficult day and felt I needed some diversion, so I picked up Once Upon a Time in New Iberia with the intent to read a chapterf then get back to work. After reading the first chapter, I knew my mother would enjoy it, too. So, I sat her down andI read it aloud to her. We didn't want to stop, so I read it in one sitting. We laughed at the hijinks of Alice and her brother, smiled in recognition of familiar settings and times, felt empathy and sorrow at the descriptions of the students at the Stewart School and some of life's tragedies, and spent a memorable morning experiencing life in the New Iberia of Alice's life. No matter your age or where you grew up, you will find humor and pathos in the pages of this book. You'lll find warmly familiar feelings and travel to what may be some exotic locales. This book is infused with deep emotions and rich descriptions. When we finished, I felt so moved. My Mom remarked, "Oh, to be able to write like that!' It was an enjoyable book to read and a memorable experience to share with my Mom.

Nothing new.His overuse of colloquialisms and euphemisms makes the stories hard to follow in places. Peppered with long-winded rants and snippets of bigotry.If you have his earlier books on the same subject just pick up one up and reread it and save the cost of this one. He has exhausted this theme.

Pettis I recommend this book to anyone who is on the fence post about starting your next challenge. Good example of the daily physical and mental ups and downs while chasing your dream. I could relate to Tracy and the team members as a group. It's interesting to note that each rider had their own physical abilities and limitations but yet they somehow managed to stick together to the end. All was for a great cause too; our wounded military veterans. Good job!

Tracy does a great job at conveying how her dream of riding coast to coast came to happen and how she wanted such an event to help others – in this case the Hope For The Warriors charity.As one of the team members on the ride, she really describes the ups and downs that the team had over the 31 days of cycling across all types of weather and terrain. She shows what it takes to ride 31 centuries almost back to back and be successful. It was a lot of work pulling an event of this size off and the book correctly portrays that effort.I can REALLY tell you, that both the preparation for the ride and the ride itself was truly an incredibly journey and one that I will NEVER forget.If you are planning a dream that seems to big or you are just planning to ride across the US, please read the book. It will help inspire you to start and complete your incredibly journeyScott Manning

Jennifer wrote in such a way that I could feel what she was feeling. Her love of family and God are so real and touching in this book. What a great book--Jennifer shares her story so eloquently By Karla Schiever What a great book--Jennifer shares her story so eloquently, as well as opens up to the inner turmoil so many experience and yet are afraid to verbalize for fear of looking weak; but sharing helps others realize they are not alone, and they too will make it. Remarkable writing in a way that hooks you from start to finish. I'll be sending this book on to several friends who I know will love it as well. Thanks for sharing your story!!

I kept thinking, "Surely things can't get worse." And then things got worse! Her narrative made me want to keep reading. Even though Jennifer and her family endured great challenges, God's faithfulness shone through. That faithfulness is what gave them the strength to carry on even when being stretched to what seemed like the nth degree. I appreciated her honesty but also her writing style.

Meeting Life's Storms By Dasler Qualifier, I have not finished this yet but I would recommend this whether or not you have read any of the author's fiction books. Both are great reads and Storm Surge offers life lessons based on the author's personal experiences.

I loved it from beginning to end. The court gossip, the fashion of the day the glimpse into a world of beauty and elegance that can only be imagined but yet a love story about a very young girl. I did not know anything about the woman in the famous Botticelli painting, Venus rising from the sea but I am so glad Ms. Picardi brought her to life for us.

The research is impeccable and the reader feels a part of the daily life of Renaissance Florence. The structure goes beyond a simple narrative and borders on true literature. Simonetta the person and Simonetta the book are definitely worth getting to know. I've ordered plenty for my reading friends for Christmas!

The 15th century was a time of intrigue and romance, with the Medicis figuring prominently in the story. Simonetta caught Botticelli's eye and she became his favorite subject. Her beauty endures, as she rises from the sea in his famous "Birth of Venus."

About the Author

Circles of Empowerment: From the Shores of the Mediterranean to The New World, by Nina Avidar Weiner

About the Author Nina Avidar Weiner was born and grew up in a multicultural home in Alexandria Egypt. Her family moved to Israel in 1949. She became an educator and psychologist, studying in Geneva with renowned Professor Jean Piaget. Back in Israel she worked as a psychologist under Professor Reuven Feuerstein. Later, she got her Master’s degree from Teacher’s College, Columbia University in New York City. She met and married American lawyer Walter H. Weiner, and the couple settled in Manhattan. Weiner worked as a psychologist for underserved youth, and came to believe that the best way to improve people’s lives was through a better education. In the 1970s she spent three years as an alternate representative to the United Nations for WIZO, a non-governmental organization helping women and children internationally. In 1977, with the full backing of world-renowned banker Edmond J. Safra, she co-founded the International Sephardic Education Foundation, ISEF, which grants college scholarships to deserving students in Israel’s underserved communities. Mrs. Weiner continues to head ISEF today, 38 years after its creation.

It is a very worthwhile addition to the canon of works from recent years about the Jews from Egypt, who were dispossessed and forced to leave the country after the Suez crisis of 1956. Ms. Wiener's book revisits that experience and then focuses largely on her subsequent life in Israel Europe and America, her friendship with Lily and Edmond Safra, and the extraordinary lifework she committed to with their help, to offer educational opportunities to the immigrant Jews from Arab lands who found themselves disadvantaged in their new home and culture of Israel. The foundation she began enabled dozens of Sephardic and Mizrahi Jews in Israel to attain important positions in education, medicine and economics, and in their turn, to forge a community of giving and inspiration to others. The work Nina Wiener conceived and developed is a jewel beyond price. The book traces a fascinating path through that journey, filled with delicious anecdotes and wonderful photos of a bygone era. Nina Weiner's account explores an important chapter in the history of displaced Jews from the Middle East who immigrated to the newly-established state of Israel and the numerous obstacles they faced. Her personal journey from Egypt to Israel, Europe — where she studied psychology—and then to America is a narrative full of adventure and drama replete with stories of celebrated people many readers have met or wished they had met. Included are photographic illustrations that enrich the text and will delight every reader. I highly recommend it.
