For twenty-one years Dan Russell trained for four to six hours a day, six days a week in pursuit of winning an Olympic Gold medal in the sport of wrestling. He pushed his body to the limits, enduring brutal weight loss regimens, shattering injuries, personal tragedy and constant inner battles with the voices from his past telling him that he wasn’t good enough. With his brother and fellow champion wrestler, Joe, by his side, Dan reached the heights of what could be accomplished in the sport. Dan’s Olympic dream was within his grasp. But God had other plans for his life. Finish Strong is the incredible story of a driven man’s pursuit of success and finding purpose when all seems lost. It is the story of a wrestler, struggling not just against his opponents in the ring, but to discover what makes a true champion. The lessons from Dan’s life teach us that to finish strong we must make the choice to fight for our dreams and embrace the struggle — and when we do, the winning will take care of itself.

Finish Strong: The Dan Russell Story, by Dan Russell, Craig Borlase

Review I've known Dan Russell since high school and even back then he and his brother Joe were making history-- and they were on a quest for gold. This gold wasn't buried beneath rock and earth, but under years of hard work, trials and pain. His champion spirit and determination to reach that gold is what makes Dan's story so incredible. And I think we can all gain important 'nuggets' of wisdom from his experiences on the wrestling mat and beyond. As someone who knows a thing or two about the pursuit of gold-- and the many peaks and dark valleys you can experience along the way-- I can tell you that Dan knows what it means to find the true riches in life. --Todd Hoffman, Creator and Star of GOLD RUSHFinish Strong is an excellent book. I was moved by the authenticity of Dan's account about the bond that forms between two brothers who wrestle that goes beyond friendship, beyond brotherhood, beyond words. And to face the fight alone after tragedy is something that only one who has experienced it can truly know. This story is a powerful reminder that even in the middle of our greatest challenges, we can find the strength to go on. --Mark Schultz, Olympic Champion and author of FOXCATCHER: The True Story of My Brother's Murder, John du Pont's Madness, and the Quest for Olympic GoldThis book is a riveting, dramatic sports memoir told straight from the heart. World-renowned wrestler Dan Russell skillfully guides us through youthful years of fanatically hard work, applying impossible levels of discipline in his headlong pursuit of Olympic gold. The lessons he learns, and the insights he gains along the way, can be applied to any life. Even as a youngster, he is taught that life is all about character and persistence and setting goals. And the passion he brings to the obstacles he encounters on this difficult journey ultimately molds him. His is a truly exceptional life, one packed with achievement. FINISH STRONG is an amazing testament, which sagely describes the bold, often lonely path that Russell chose, and the shaping of the loving husband, father, and spiritual mentor that he eventually became. --Spike Walker, Author of Working on the Edge-- the book that inspired DEADLIEST CATCH

About the Author Dan Russell is recognized as the real deal in the wrestling world. He's a four-time NCAA Champion and four-time Academic All-American. He was an Olympic alternate for the 1992 and 1996 Olympics and named the 1995 Unofficial Champion of the World after winning the Ivan Poddubny Tournament at the time, the second U.S. athlete to ever do so. Dan was the 2004 Olympic wrestling coach for Guam and Olympic Solidarity Instructor for Palau and Federated States of Micronesia. He taught for several years at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Dan is the senior pastor at Battle Ground Foursquare Church in Battle Ground, Washington. He is also a motivational speaker at colleges, businesses and church groups around the world.

By E.Harrison I ordered this book initially for my son who wrestles and when it arrived I thought I would look at the first few pages to get an idea about what he would be reading. I read the first half of the book that evening and the next half the following day...... I couldn't put it down! Not only is it an incredible book for anyone who loves the sport of wrestling but even more...it is a book for anyone who is struggling with their faith or who has ever questioned God's plan for their life. Powerful, gripping and emotionally transparent!

In Finish Strong, Dan Russell gives us a glimpse inside the mind of a competitive male athlete. Having read it, I still do not understand wrestling, or any other sport. However, I did encounter the heart of a man who loves God and remains his disciple on and off the mat. Wrestling is a metaphor for life, and Dan Russell shares the lessons he has learned without pontificating. Rather than talking down to his readers, Dan vulnerably describes his own journey following the God who can redeem our biggest disappointments. Wow. If there is a male jock you love, this is the book for you. They might even read it as well! Melody Miller

Pure inspiration fueled by buckets of perspiration, personality, and perseverance By Amazon Customer Dan Russell’s story is pure inspiration fueled by buckets of perspiration, personality, and perseverance. I was hooked from the first chapter of Finish Strong. Dan shares some solid nuggets for living. At 14 and already a well-trained athlete, Dan set out to drastically cut weight while training six days a week, before a key match. He took on the challenge and beat a hometown favorite to earn him a spot on the Cadet World Team. Weeks after experiencing the high of the win and all the attention, his Dad asks him if it still feels like that was the greatest moment of his life? True, it was a huge accomplishment. Then his Dad points out that “Real joy is all the hard work that goes into reaching for our dream.” One nugget: Life is about engaging with the struggle not trying to get out of it.

FOOD SCARS is the story of my struggle and victory over childhood and adolescent obesity. A loss of over 200 pounds that takes the reader through the highs and lows that obesity brings. There are moments of sheer happiness and those of tears. All true. I lived it. There were times I could not walk and now I run. Moments I ate and those moments I could not. Moments of sheer pain from a damaged back that kept me in bed for years and how I was able to reach out by writing this book.

By Kelli Casady An explicitly detailed real life account of the challenges, emotions, and struggles associated with food addiction and pain. A heart-wrenching, yet extremely inspirational story that will keep you reading until the end.Prepare yourself for an emotional rollercoaster ride, as you follow Kevin through many years of successes and failures on his journey to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. A series of life highs and lows, that nearly any person who has had an addiction of any kind can relate to. I think many would be challenged to not find themselves in some part of this story, which it what makes it so relatable to the reader..... whether they find they are the one facing the daily struggle, the unknowing enabler, the one who is the unwavering supporter, the onlooker who passes judgement without knowing someone's circumstances, or the one who suffers from chronic pain that impacts every aspect of their life and feels there is nowhere left to turn.Thank you Kevin, for sharing your very personal journey with us!.

I couldn't put it down.Kevin Rosser writes from his heart. Courageously written might even be an understatement. Reading through the book is like a rollercoaster ride: the emotional ups and downs of anyone struggling with weight, food addiction, self-esteem or body image issues.Raw, emotional and relatable on so many levels. We are all human and I can say with absolute certainty we have all felt the feelings told in this book in one way or another.I applaude the author for sharing his story. It's not an easy thing to do to bare your painful past for the world to see. However, it's obvious his objective is to help anyone who is living this nightmare.Start reading today. You will not be disappointed.

The self loathing, bargaining, fear of failure, expecting failure, the agony of knowing "what" to do. Food is as addictive as any drug or alcohol, it's the same disease yet our drug of choice is used to celebrate life,it's what our American culture does and folks like Kevin and I take it to the outer limits. He nailed every struggle, every emotion, the whole ugly state. Please, if you have a loved one in this battle read this book! If nothing else it will open your eyes, those of us who have been super morbidly obese could use some compassion and empathy. No shaming required, we cover that quite well as Kevin aptly explores and discusses. Thank you for a very honest descriptionOf this never ending jouney

The speaker of these poems is an intelligent everyman who experiences daily indignities and frustrations that readers will recognize, such as motivational talks at work and snarled traffic. He's a man who realizes the limitations of an individual life, yet loves that life and longs for more. School, growing up, classic rock, the relationship of the son to the father, art history, love, the natural world, and the weird next-door neighbor all provide subject matter. It's Coomer's sly, subversive sense of humor that helps the sadder truths go down.

Excellent volume of intriguing poetry By virginiabooklover This is an excellent collection of poems and I am really enthusiastic to see it come to fruition as a volume. Jeff Coomer's writing is eloquent, honest and insightful. His poetry is notable for a remarkable range of expression, varying from wry, irreverent, sombre, humorous, reflective, to ironic and poignant. A Potentially Quite Remarkable Thursday offers intriguing and entertaining insights into human nature and experience. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it and look forward to returning to it from time to time.

Phrases such as "corner-office voice" and "reorganize your collection of unhealed wounds" are among many that resonant. Coomer combines words effortlessly, the content of his poems speak pure truth, and his experiences and perceptions are ours. I loved the humor, the memory aches, and the connection to nature. I sense Billy Collins is nearby as Coomer writes. Read this book of poems today.

What I like most is that what she’s written is original in the truest sense of the word: You can feel that it comes from her “point of origin,” at her own, innermost center. And so the feeling she expresses is deeply and sincerely felt. Also generous, motivated as she obviously is by a wish to help others. The best works of art are always a sharing not just of ideas, but of oneself. This book felt to me like a gift from soul to soul: Susan has shared with us not just her story, but her heart and consciousness—and her goodness.

Ebook PDF Online A General View of Positivism (Routledge Revivals), by Auguste Comte

In Comte’s original work on positivism, he attempted to outline a general perception of positivism, how it can be applied to society and how society would work should positivism be applied. J.H. Bridges’ translation, originally published in 1865, this version first published in 1908, manages to simplify and clarify Comte’s views of positivism and how it is related to the thoughts, feelings and actions of humankind as well as how positivism can be applied to philosophy, politics, industry, poetry, the family and the future. This title will be of interest to students of sociology and philosophy.

2 of 6 people found the following review helpful. We are the world. By Yaakov (James) Mosher A French patriot, writing amid the upheavals of 1848, alerted his countrymen, fellow Europeans, and posterity to an emerging social science that harmonizes order (the conservative impulse) and progress (the liberal impulse). Auguste Comte (1798-1857) called this science "Positivism," positing its ability to break the trend of negativism brought about by the decline of Catholic feudalism and culminating in the French Revolution. Like all brilliant entrepreneurs, Comte saw the revolution as an opportunity within a tragedy. Erik von Kuenelt-Leddihn, in his book "Leftism Revisited," accurately summarized that Comte sought to create a secular version of the Roman Catholic Church. Comte's reverence for Catholicism is all through "A General View of Positivism" although in trying to sell his philosophy to Frenchmen he made the church sound better than it actually was. Puzzling is his attribution of the idea of separating the temporal power (government) from the spiritual power (philosophic) to the Roman Church. I don't recall the Vatican ever giving up political power voluntarily. Perhaps Comte is crediting the Bible's "Give on to Caesar what is Caesar's and give on to G-d what is G-d's" to Catholicism when it should be attributed to Christianity in general. Interestingly, as foreshadowed by Comte, the Roman Church has evolved into a more positivist institution, eschewing direct involvement in elections and practical politics and sticking to its morals advisory knitting. Result: Pope Benedict XVI has an 80 percent approval rating with Americans, a level President George W. Bush (who regularly confounds the roles of morals and politics) can only dream of. Readers will not be able to miss the non-theological, non-metaphysical nature of Comte's "Religion of Humanity." This characteristic is what links it to its variants in other fields - logical empiricism in the field of language and logic as practiced by the Vienna and Berlin circles of the 1920s and 1930s, the physical-science instrumentalism of Ernst Mach and Henri Poincare, and William Clifford's non-Euclidean geometry. Unlike most other empiricists and inductive thinkers, Comte saw his system eventually embracing all of humanity. Thanks to flexibility under republican principles and a history with Catholicism, France would take the lead in adopting Positivism, with the philosophy gradually adding the remainder of Western Europe then the rest of the world in a period of not less than 200 years. Comte's forecast seems to be on pace. The European Union, peacefully clustered around French-speaking Brussels, is the most public manifestation of Positivism today. (Note its stable currency and the great desire of Eastern Europeans to join while metaphysical America's dollar declines and its NATO policy antagonizes Russia toward Cold War II). Were he alive today, Comte could comfortably say "EU c'est moi." "A General View of Positivism" makes passing mention of the United States but anyone who picks up a newspaper can easily see that today's America is not ready for Positivism. This is due mainly to the natures of Positivism and U.S. society. Positivism is anti-individualist, anti-militarist, and contrary to the postulates of modern American feminism. Comte venerates women, going so far as to call his Great Being (the new god, i.e. humanity) "She," reflecting the view that women put social feeling over self-love more naturally than any other group (a key tenant of Positivism). Yet Comte's reading of history and discernment of the laws of sociology and nature lead him to determine women's most effective and harmonious role as working in the home, educating and civilizing children (especially males), and influencing public opinion through the salon. Men and women competing in the economy poisons relations between the sexes at their very source, Comte points out. Sad but true yet try selling that to America's NOW gang and teachers unions. The profoundly conservative and pro-life sentiments of Comte's Positivism are too elevated for the shallow jingoists that make up much of the contemporary American right wing. Consider the American infatuation with novelty, newness, and unrestrained democracy then consider this - "We see this unfortunate narrowness of view too often in the best socialists, who leaving the present without roots in the past, would carry us headlong toward a future of which they have no conception. In all social phenomena, and especially those of modern times, the participation of our predecessors is greater than that of our contemporaries." (p. 403, Robert Speller & Sons edition, published 1957). Now consider whether prattling about ever-elastic "rights" can come close to valuing the unborn and other humans the way this statement does - "The principle upon which Positivism insists so strongly, the union of the present with the past, and even with the future, is not limited to the life of society. It is a doctrine which unites all individuals and all generations...We may live with those who are not yet born; a thing impossible only till a true theory of history had arisen, of scope sufficient to embrace at one glance the whole course of human destiny." (p. 290-291). Jewish intellectual Dennis Prager once said he couldn't give a good secular reason for marriage but Comte, further burnishing his conservative credentials, provides one, writing that binding union with one of the opposite sex is crucial for the moral development of the partners. Moreover, polygamy and divorce erode civilization, Comte writes, leading one to speculate if this isn't a leading cause of stagnation in the Islamic world. "The striking superiority of social life in the West is probably due to it (monogamy) more than any other cause." (p. 263). Positivism would likely be most opposed in America by those who should be best able to discern its assets - conservatives. You'd expect opposition from mass-market neoconservatives like Rush Limbaugh, who tried to discredit John Kerry during the 2004 election by calling him "the French candidate." Others held that the Kerry/Edwards motto ("For a Stronger America") should actually have been "For a Stranger America." Such vapidity doesn't merit a reply. But reactions of thoughtful conservatives do. In "The Conservative Mind," Russell Kirk warned about positivists and rationalists undermining the "religious nature" of society yet didn't offer one quote from Comte or include Comte in the book's bibliography. Kirk's summation of Comte's philosophy seems tainted by biases favoring theological conservatism and British conservatism. Surely, Kirk was right to recoil at the injection of one aspect of Comte's philosophy (the preeminence of public opinion, which has lead to the Oprah-ization of U.S. politics and government-by-polling data) into a society not ready for Positivism. Yet Kirk's central views about obedience and virtue agree with Comte's. The best hope for Positivism in the U.S. is for it to be adopted under the brand name of its closest American cousin - Pragmatism, as developed by William James and Charles Peirce. As history further advances the U.S. toward the need for Positivism, with metaphysical and theological notions and government-by-interest group sowing destruction in every direction, the question will arise "Does relativist Positivism, by its communitarian nature, lead to statist absolutism?" (The converse being absolutist religion giving us relativist statism). Comte addressed this by writing that totalitarianism is possible if people confuse Positivism's intellectual nature with its social aspect. Just as revealing is Positivist physicist Philipp Frank's remark about the "tragic feature of enlightenment." To wit, advancing science destroys old conceptions while creating the conditions for misuse of the new ways. Like its religious and philosophical ancestors, the fountainhead that is Positivism can pour forth waters that are bitter and sweet. Comte's most effective sales pitch is when he uses the features of theology to show that most religious practice is actually self-service. Jewish, Christian, and Islamic conceptions hold that G-d is perfect and needs nothing from humanity. Mirroring the approach of Baruch Spinoza, who equated G-d with the world, Comte reminds us that humanity is in need and we are all part of the Great Being thus we're duty-bound to make the Great Being (our home) a success. In other words, we are the world.

Hesper Dance, live-in caretaker of Peregrine’s Rest, a graveyard founded in 1848, is a manic-depressive, introverted ex-librarian who seeks refuge from life’s disappointments by communing with the dead. Her lifelong ambition is to see a ghost. Inadvertently aiding her in this quest is her new assistant, Quentin Pike, world traveler, adventurer, and mapmaker, and Lydia Webkin, a septuagenarian comic-book collector. Ghostly doings will ultimately unite Hesper and Quentin in romantic love, while Lydia, haunted by the spirit of a dead cartoonist with whom she had an affair 40 years ago, attracts evil in the form of twins: Argus and Audrey Malvin, a deadly brother-and-sister team prone to grave-robbing, counterfeiting and malice.   This offbeat entertainment is full of comic-book and cemetery lore, and Gostin spikes the spooky intrigue with deft approaches to the question of whether we are bound to our bodies, or whether something survives.

Peregrine's Rest: A Novel, by Jennifer Gostin

From Publishers Weekly Despite some ghoulish fun and literate prose, Gostin's first novel, set on and around Halloween in an old Maryland cemetery, walks cardboard eccentrics through a creaky plot. Hesper Dance, live-in caretaker of Peregrine's Rest, a graveyard founded in 1848, is a manic-depressive, introverted ex-librarian who seeks refuge from life's disappointments by communing with the dead. Her lifelong ambition is to see a ghost. Inadvertently aiding her in this quest is her new assistant, Quentin Pike, world traveler, adventurer, mapmaker, and Lydia Webkin, a septuagenarian comic-book collector. Ghostly doings will ultimately unite Hesper and Quentin in romantic love, while Lydia, haunted by the spirit of a dead cartoonist with whom she had an affair 40 years ago, attracts evil in the person of twins Argus and Audrey Malvin, a deadly brother-and-sister team prone to grave-robbing, counterfeiting and malice. This offbeat entertainment is full of comic-book and cemetery lore, and Gostin spikes the spooky intrigue with deft approaches to the question of whether we are bound to our bodies or whether something survives Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Hesper Dance is the caretaker and archivist of Peregrine's Rest, a small, privately owned cemetery that has been designated as a potential historic site. Hesper has taken this job because she wants to see a ghost, to be reassured that life has meaning beyond our short, unhappy time on earth. To her pleasant solitude is added Quentin Pike, a traveler who is seeking land untouched by humanity but who needs a job and is hired to help Hesper complete her cataloging of the graves. The final key character is Lydia Webkin. Lydia collects the comic books created by her long-dead sweetheart, who, not coincidentally, is buried in Peregrine's Rest. Together, Hesper, Quentin, and Lydia aid each other in their quests and foil a plot to desecrate the old cemetery. This is the sort of find that reviewers crave: a terrific book by a first novelist writing for a small press. Wonderfully drawn scenes, imaginative characters, and a well-crafted plot, complete with a logical and satisfying resolution. George Needham

From Kirkus Reviews Light, engaging, small-town-romance debut novel, with a goofy whodunit subplot about a trio of eccentrics obsessed with old graveyards. Hesper Dance, the fortysomething heroine, has always found graveyards peaceful--and so she becomes caretaker of Peregrine's Rest, a shady, historic cemetery park in the small Maryland town of Colonnade. On the opposite side of town, Quentin Pike, a rootless, fortysomething loner who reminds women of ``an old European walled city that had seen uprisings and overthrowings, bombs and reconstruction, glory and disillusion'' loses his umpteenth job, answers a classified ad for a job as a caretaker's assistant at the cemetery and is hired over Hesper's objections. Meanwhile, Lydia Webkin, a retiree who lives in an old house that shares a wall with the cemetery, searches the bucolic Maryland landscape for dealers in old comic books drawn by a dead lover, Ned Holly, whose cartooned gravestone is one of the cemetery's more popular tourist attractions. Each comic book Lydia finds helps her to commune with Ned's spirit, whose actuality Gostin tastefully leaves ambiguous. The novel harbors many an unusual turn and wry glimpse of human nature as these three become ensnared in the vile plans of 60-year- old twins Argus and Audrey Malvin, the cartoonishly perverse black sheep of one of the town's wealthiest families, who want to close down the cemetery because of a nasty secret hidden within a crypt. The hokeyness of the twins' evil undermines a lovely, coy tale of older, but no wiser, folks discovering an autumnal love among the ruined headstones. Gostin's habit of beginning her short chapters with pithy literary quotes about death and spirituality becomes tiresome, but the charm and quiet dignity of her characters, and the richly evocative atmosphere of the graveyard itself, save the book from its maudlin moments. Atmospheric, literate October country romance sure to warm the bed-and-breakfast set. A grown-up trick or treat. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

By A Customer The reviews on the back of this book described it as a ghost story (which I do not like), a romance (which I do not read), and a goofy whodunit (which I enjoy but frequently find disappointing). It is also a first novel. I did not approach it with high expectations, but my book discussion group had selected it. By page 18, however, I was smiling, and by page 25 I was calling a friend that I KNEW would love the book! This is a real little gem! The writing is literate, the characters are unique, the descriptions are vivid and non-cliched, and the plot, while zany, is plausible. Even the conventional little quotes that begin each chapter are especially apt. I will certainly tell Eyes to let me know when Gostin publishes her next book

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. wonderfully different ghost story By Sheila G.. This was a very different book than what I usually read, but, I could not put it down! Finished it in 1 night and it was super. I recommend this to anyone who is tried of the usual "haunted whatever" books because the characters are real. Whe I get I book like this I keep it and reread. It never dissapoints! There is always something I missed the 1st time. I'm waiting for the next one and I hope it has at least one of the same lovely "friends" in it. Since I have always been a "ghost" person, it made me want to visit some of the old local cemetaries and just watch. Lucky are we who never "grow up".

It is totally unlike anything else I've read.Unusually (for me) I was unable to guess how it was going to end.I can only assume it's unattractive cover kept people from trying it.I highly recommend it and hope she'll write another soon!

Flatland A romance of many dimensions, by Edwin A. Abbott

About the Author Edwin Abbott Abbott (1838-1926) has been ranked as one of the leading scholars and theologians of the Victorian era. He received highest honors in mathematics, classics, and theology at St. John's College, Cambridge, and in 1862 began a brilliant career, during which he served as schoolmaster of some of England's outstanding schools. At the same time he distinguished himself as a scholar, and in 1889 he retired to his studies. Although "Flatland, a literary jeu d'esprit, " has given pleasure to thousands of readers over many generations, Abbott is best known for his scholarly works, especially his "Shakespearian Grammar "and his life of Francis Bacon, and for a number of theological discussions.

This isn't because it is boring, or because it is hard to read, but because of the large amount of digestion one need's to fully comprehend (and to fully enjoy) this book. Even this book contains only 82 pages, it is by no means light reading. The book was originally released in 1884 under Abbott's pseudonym A Square. In the story we follow the journey of a square who lives in a land of two dimensions--a flat land. In it class, and ultimately intelligence, is determined by the amount of sides that a shape has. As the amount of sides a shape has decreases, we find that it also is more emotional and apt to cause destruction through their pointed corners. Women are depicted as straight lines, but one has to take into account the time that this book was published. One can also disregard the story as having any relations to anything in our society and enjoy it for what it is, a mind bending social criticism. In this tale we follow the aforementioned square through his everyday life. we learn what it is like to exist in only two dimensions. We learn of how rain falls form the north and disappears to the south and how gravity is a minute force that pulls to the south ever so slightly. We follow him through the government and through social classes, and the discrimination that comes with them. When his son talks of geometric impossibilities such as 23 (cubed) he has a dream of a lesser land than his, a land called line land. IN it there is not two but only one dimension of being. Through discussion with the kind of lineland, we are offered insight into why our hero the square cannot conceive of the third dimension. Later our hero is visited by a great being, a sphere that appears to him seemingly out of nowhere. This confuses the square very much, and even more when the sphere tries to explain how he passed into his dimension from the third. After heated debate, the sphere takes him and shows him the third dimension, turning our hero into an evolved form of him self, a cube. Form his higher vantage point the square is able to see the innards of those who reside in flatland. He receives tutoring from the sphere about this new dimension and all that it entails. He learns of how limited the field of vision is for those living in flatland, both literally and figuratively. With his previous limits of reality stripped and with his eye opened to the truth, the square quickly follows logic and asks to see the insides of the sphere, and wishes to ascend further into greater dimensions, fourth dimensions and fifth and onward and upward. The sphere is appalled by this heresy and send our hero back to the limited realm of flatland. Here he tries to convince others to be enlightened, but cannot find success. He has a second dream involving the dimension of pointland, no dimensions. The being inhabiting this land is of nothing and knows nothing but itself, which is nothing. There fore this being cannot be disappointed by anything, because it cannot conceive of anything other than itself. We can see the religious parallels to Hinduism and Buddhism here. The completely content creature is of nothingness, much like the state that Buddhists try to achieve, and the outward ranking by dimension not sides can be seen in Hinduism in the spiral path towards God that the Hindu believe they travel along passing from one point on the spiral to another with each passing life. In this land of math all of the lands are contained within each other, much like the rings of the spiral. Finally after this dream the square realizes the futility of trying to convince others through speech, and he feels he must do it through demonstration. Folks hear of his heresy and bring him to the court for the climax of the book. Whether or not the plot of the novel itself is very entertaining, the ability to get your head around concepts that can only be experienced through the mind is challenged thoroughly by this novel. It is a must read for anyone who thinks that they are well educated, as it will quickly tell you just where you stand, theologically, philosophically and mathematically.

70 of 76 people found the following review helpful. Unimaginable Dimensions By Jon Linden Flatland is a unique and brilliant treatise on a trifurcated level. It is a sociological statement, a mathematical statement and a religious statement all rolled into an incredibly astute 82 pages. The book centers mostly on the differences between a two dimensional world and a three dimensional world; but comments on society, law, prejudice, religion, and proselytizing. The book especially points out the difficulty in envisioning a greater reality and a greater vision than is commonly observed by any individual in any dimension or society. The author's premise relates to things existing in a "plane geometry" world as opposed to a "Euclidian Geometric" three dimensional figure universe. The book carefully illustrates to one denizen of Flatland how the three dimensional world of space works and/or exists. Upon finally understanding the "Gospel of Three Dimensions" our protagonist goes on to try and apply the same arithmetic logic and geometric analogs to a fourth dimensional universe. Shouldn't there exist a fourth dimensional universe that allows an entity to look down upon the three dimensional universe with as much transparency as one can from three dimensions to two?Alas, things become different in dimensions other than the first, a world of lines, the second, a world of shapes and the third, a world of objects. In the zero dimension, all things are a point. Mathematically we know that any number raised to the "0" power equals 1 and therefore, all things in the zero dimension resolve into one single omnipotent point. This condition would also exist in the fourth dimension; as those of us in the third dimension have no model to compare it to. Envisioning a fourth dimension, even with time as the fourth dimension is truly difficult or impossible for us in the third dimension.Interspersed with this witty and intellectual dialogue are comments on society and its structure. He specifically comments multiple times of the degradation of women in society to the lowest social status. Only men are educated in Flatland. Interestingly, he paints a picture of an authoritarian society in which people are judged by their shapes and angles. This reflecting the Victorian societal values around him at the time of his writing.Flatland is recommended to all those who seek to enlighten their view of the universe and of potential universes. It is especially recommended to those seeking higher knowledge of any type. Flatland is truly a multi-dimensional experience and worth every minute.

It's printed directly from the digitized (and free) copy from Google Books and has clearly had NO editing work done. The book is filled with references to figures that were not included, mangled words, and seemingly random breaks and markings in some spots. This would be fine for a free digitized text online, but is entirely unacceptable for a paid-for product, especially a short book that would be similarly priced in a physical store.

Comprehensive beyond compare By Matthew Manuel I bought this book for my boyfriend who's a film and Renaissance fair costumer and a heraldry nut. Now, every time I see him he's telling me that he's learned something new from this one book that he's never gleaned from any of the several dozens of heraldry books already sitting on his shelf. I couldn't have been happier with the response.I will warn you though this is an advanced book, not a book for beginners. It's very much presented like a college textbook on heraldry. Learn the basics before delving into this one, but if you're interested in heraldry and think you know a lot, get this book, you'll soon be learning things you never knew, and best of all it has both a definition of the elements of heraldry and a large cross section of true family heraldry. The only downside is as this is a reprinting all the original color plates are in black and white and a bit faded, but this in no way detrimental to the enjoyment of the book. Happy heralding!

"Call Jeff Wood's The Glacier what you will—a novel-in-screenplay-form; a prose poem on the themes of death, suburbia, and the cruel symmetries of cosmic time; a surreal prophecy from America's anguished heartland—it will remain what it was always aiming to be, and that's one of the most indelible and visionary movies you've ever seen."—Jon Raymond, author of Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy, and Meek's Cutoff

A spellbinding work in the spirit of Tarkovsky or Jodorowsky that reimagines the American frontier at the turn of the millennium, a time when suburban development was metastasizing and the Social was about to implode. Following a caterer at a convention center, a surveyor residing in a storage unit, and the masses lining up for an Event on the horizon, The Glacier is a poetic rendering of the pre-apocalypse and a requiem for the passing of one world into another.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. sort of sappy By Elaine M. Silverstrim Not terribly impressed with the story line or the characters. Early Christianity was much more complex than is portrayed. The kind of faith literature that was popular in the 50s/60s, but lacking the kind of depth that should be part of historical narratives from the early centuries of a sect that became a major religion over time.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Ability to read Latin does not help very much. By patty Familiarity with Latin should have been a help for this story but it wasn't. It contained multiple grammar errors, misspellings, and the strange punctuation as well as the transposed sentences made it very difficult to read. The plot was an innovation and the historical background was very interesting but the chapters differed in style that it was like there were two different authors. And one of them cannot handle dialog very well.

It was written almost with out conversations, but so much meat in between, that you didnt want to skip it. I loved every bit of it.

Jed Cordero Pichardo

Fragmentos de mí: Poemas Libres (Spanish Edition), by Jed Cordero Pichardo

About the Author Jed Cordero Pichardo nació en Constanza, Provincia La Vega, República Dominicana, en 1977.

¡Bravo!

Best Ebook Your Heart is Worthy: Gifts from a Modern Heroine's Journey, by Marti Thomas Finafrock

These poems come sometimes in the middle of the night while I’m barely awake, other times in meditation, while riding my road bicycle or when I sit down to my writing practice. They are the sacred gifts of my odyssey back to wholeness from a debilitating nervous breakdown in 1992. The poems are presented within the framework of the heroine’s journey. Initiatory, shamanic, mystical by nature, this is a soul journey of the wounded healer. The heroine recognizes her depression as an invitation from her subconscious self to go back through her pain. She sees she has a choice to shed her attachment to victim and to reclaim her fullness or remain immobilized by fear. Leaving everything she knows behind, the heroine descends into the underworld, facing the deep feelings she most wants to avoid, alone. She meets each buried past trauma, experiencing death, dismemberment, and complete ego annihilation. While her identification with victim-hood dies, her wholeness reveals, intimately unveiling her true identity. Her original Self, her joyful untouched essence becomes available for embodiment, breaking the spell cast by physical, emotional and mental memories of past trauma. She ascends from the underworld with gifts, bringing new wisdom and new understanding back to her community, to share, teach and guide others in their quest for Truth. These poems invite you to trust turning your gaze within, offering comfort, reassurance, inspiration, encouragement and a lay of the land from a sister on the journey. I hope you find them a blessing on your worthy heart.

Your Heart is Worthy: Gifts from a Modern Heroine's Journey, by Marti Thomas Finafrock

About the Author In the fall of 1992, Marti Thomas Finafrock began experiencing a deep unraveling of her professional self. In 1994, she met and began working with Sheila Foster whose patient love and devotion to Truth provided a safe place for learning the mysteries of spiritual emergence, re-membering her wholeness, from the inside out. Over the last few years of this work, these poems began to emerge as they are in Marti’s daily writing practice. Today, a PA licensed massage therapist, Marti splits her time between her practice at the Gettysburg Holistic Health Center and writing.
