A charming narrative of a glorious summer of golfing, eating, and learning how to slow down and enjoy life. The best-selling author of Breakfast with Buddha, Golfing with God, Revere Beach Boulevard and others, combines two of his greatest passions--travel and golf--in this humorous and poignant look at Mediterranean life. Roland Merullo was feeling a little burnt out by the frantic pace of life in the United States and decided to rent an Italian villa near the shore of Lake Como in a small town called Mezzegra. He arrived in Italy with his wife and two young daughters determined to relax, slow down, and enjoy life in the manner of their Italian hosts. Merullo also resolved to play a little golf and frequented the many gorgeous golf courses that populate the countryside. With his customary wit, he shares the entertaining account of his trip through Italy in the wonderful The Italian Summer. Composed of tales from some of Italy's finest golf courses, descriptions of the meals Merullo and his family enjoyed, and portraits of the various eccentrics they met along the way, The Italian Summer brings to life the myriad joys of Italian life in a way that all lovers of food, wine, and the proverbial "good walk spoiled" will savor. The perfect gift for golf enthusiasts and armchair travelers, The Italian Summer pays homage to a slower, richer way of life--one filled with good food, pleasant company, and beautiful surroundings. "Merullo paints a vivid portrait of a glorious adventure for golfers and gourmets . . .The Italian Summer is simply a wonderful read." -- BookReporter

Review "His entertaining travelogue bounces from golf to food to learning how to slow down. Merullo, a 'type-A personality who plays golf too fast and eats too fast' calls it a 'happy book.' It is, especially for a writer whose idea of work involves putting and discovering great unpretentious restaurants and colorful characters along the way."- USA Today" A colorful, affectionate tour of Italian landscape and food."- Kirkus"Merullo paints a vivid portrait of a glorious adventure for golfers and gourmets . . .The Italian Summer is simply a wonderful read."- BookReporter"His account of those idyllic weeks recalls Calvin Trillin in its casual tone, good humor, affable interactions with family, and Everyman's love of regional food and wine."- Booklist

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very Disappointed By Julia1 I have read most of Roland Merullo's books and always thoroughly enjoy them - not the case with his latest. I am not a golfer and really found the pages and pages that consisted of description of his golf games completely boring. I basically had to attempt to pull out parts that had a glimpse of what I like about his writing - interesting characters and dialogue that was both funny, thought provoking and entertaining. I was so looking forward to another one of his books and placed a "pre-order" to be sure that I received it as soon as it was released. The book does have great descriptions of food and places that they visited. However, for me there was just way too much golfing described in over the top detail. Perhaps golfers might enjoy this book, but I definitely did not. Sorry Mr. Merullo, this one just didn't do it for me.

There are perfectly readable electronic versions on line for FREE!! I have a slight visual impairment, so I generally prefer electronic books so that I can adjust the size of the print. I have found in the past that these scammed (sic) Kindle editions are poorly done.

Echoes of the War, by J. M. Barrie

About the Author J.M. Barrie was born in 1860, the ninth of ten children of hard-working parents in Scotland's jute-weaving industry. Fascinated by stories of her own life told him by his mother, he was determined to write, finding work on the Nottingham Journal after graduating from Edinburgh University. By the time Peter Pan opened on the London stage in 1904, Barrie had written more than thirty novels and plays, many autobiographical and several of them major hits such as The Little Minister, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton. Knighted and awarded the Order of Merit he continued writing into old age. He died in 1937.

I am a SURVIVOR! Because of Gods, Love, Mercy & Grace, I have been blessed to have the ability to share “my story” through my works: Writing short stories, poetry and novels as well as public speaking. Today, I am grateful for life. Yet saddened by the statistics, in relation to, the number of women who has lost there lives at the hands of another. Therefore, I dedicate my life to telling my story and helping women who have fallen victim of domestic violence by spreading knowledge & words of encouragement to whomever & where ever God sends me! This book includes Various Poetry and Short Stories including an excerpt from an upcoming novel The Blackest Blue: To this day all I can remember is being drug from the car by my hair; my back sliding across the graveled parking lot, and my already broken right leg being pulled by its’ ankle. And the rods that protruded the outer right side of my thigh, being tugged at by the large rocks that shifted beneath me. As I looked around the unfamiliar City Park, I remember thinking that today was the day; that he would come through on all of his sinful promises and deadly threats. As he held the 9mm handgun to the center of my head, my daughters’ face, which was then seven years old, flashed before my eyes and my heart fell at the thought of leaving her to face this cruel world alone. I also thought why had I stayed with him for ten years? My mind raced rapidly, while I wondered what I had done to deserve this. What horrible sin had I committed that would make GOD show his wrath in such a way? The man I once loved, was now standing before me ready to pull the trigger and shatter my existence all over a parking lot, in a wooded area located in Eaton County. A county, that would disregard my death as drug related; or refuse to use taxpayer’s money, to investigate because of my race.... The 10 years that I was in an abusive relationship, I was merely a caterpillar…TodayI am a beautiful Butterfly ~ Thank GOD I have earned my wings… I rise and I fly!

PDF Ebook Contract Killer: The Making of a Murderer, by Rodney Timms

In Contract Killer: The Making of a Murderer, Rodney Timms takes you behind the boundaries of acceptable behavior and into the dark abyss of the mind of mass murderers—and the homes that incubated them. Timms will lead you through his own shocking story of child abuse and then reveal the common denominators between Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski; Charles Manson; The Co-ed Killer, Big Ed Kemler III; serial killer Henry Lee Lucas; the Boston Strangler, Albert DeSalvo; and Jeffrey Dahmer. During the period from 1957 to 1992, the murder rate in the US doubled. During that same time, the rate of aggravated assault—attempting to maim or kill—multiplied many times. Seeing this trend, police officials warned that we would soon see mass murderers as young as 12 years old. Today that prediction seems prophetic. If you’ve ever been alarmed and wondered why it was happening, this book will answer your questions. This book is a must read for parents, social workers, law enforcement and health care workers. It is a wake-up call for America. • One study revealed that 100 percent of the serial killers studied had been abused as children either through violence, neglect, or humiliation. • More than 70 percent had witnessed or been victimized by sexually stressful events. • The most staggering difference was found in psychological abuse. While only two percent of the general population reported psychological abuse, that figure soared to 50 percent in serial killers, making it the highest risk factor.

"Just our luck!" Gus Lafee finished wiping his hands and sullenly threw the towel upon the rocks. His attitude was one of deep dejection. The light seemed gone out of the day and the glory from the golden sun. Even the keen mountain air was devoid of relish, and the early morning no longer yielded its customary zest. "Just our luck!" Gus repeated, this time avowedly for the edification of another young fellow who was busily engaged in sousing his head in the water of the lake. "What are you grumbling about, anyway?" Hazard Van Dorn lifted a soap-rimmed face questioningly. His eyes were shut. "What's our luck?" "Look there!" Gus threw a moody glance skyward. "Some duffer's got ahead of us. We've been scooped, that's all!" Hazard opened his eyes, and caught a fleeting glimpse of a white flag waving arrogantly on the edge of a wall of rock nearly a mile above his head. Then his eyes closed with a snap, and his face wrinkled spasmodically. Gus threw him the towel, and uncommiseratingly watched him wipe out the offending soap. He felt too blue himself to take stock in trivialities. Hazard groaned.

Dutch Courage and Other Stories, by Jack London

About the Author Jack London was an American author, journalist, and adventurer. London s early careers as sailor, fisherman, and prospector provided inspiration for his later writing, and it was only when he returned from the Klondike that London decided to focus on social activism and journalism. He soon became a popular magazine columnist and author, and a prolific commercial writer, penning over two dozen novels, and numerous short stories and poems. His most famous works include The Call of the Wild, White Fang, The Sea-Wolf, and the short stories To Build a Fire, and An Oddyssey of the North. London died in 1916.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A posthumous collection of odds and ends By Karl Janssen Dutch Courage is a collection of short stories by Jack London that was originally published in 1922, about six years after his death. It gathers together ten stories that had not been included in any of his previous short story collections. The preface by London's widow Charmian, which is more confusing than helpful, states that the common thread that binds these stories together is that they are all suitable for young audiences. Be that as it may, even though many of these stories feature teenaged protagonists and were originally published in boy's pulp magazines like The Youth's Companion, they don't seem as dumbed down or as tame as some of London's more obviously youth-oriented fiction like the short stories in Tales of the Fish Patrol or the novel The Cruise of the Dazzler. However, you won't find the sort of bleak fatalism that permeates famous London works like The Call of the Wild or "To Build a Fire". These stories are all straightforward examples of entertaining adventure fiction, devoid of philosophy or politics. With one exception, the stories included in Dutch Courage are some of the first works London ever wrote. London's first published story, "Typhoon Off the Coast of Japan", written when he was 17, was the winning entry in a writing contest sponsored by the San Francisco Morning Call. In this descriptive sketch, seal hunters in their scattered boats struggle to return to their schooner before a big storm hits. Once safely on board, the crew rides out the typhoon as it pummels their ship. It is an impressive piece of work for a teenager, and shows the nascent talent that would spawn a stellar career. There are other selections that are even more auspicious. "Chris Farrington, Able Seaman" is a better, more fictionalized account of the "Typhoon" story. In "The Lost Poacher," another sealing schooner inadvertently drifts into Russian waters, forcing the crew to face the possibility of capture and imprisonment in the salt mines of Siberia. "In Yeddo Bay" is a more comical tale of a young sailor in Yokohama who loses his purse, then must find a way to get back to his ship with empty pockets. Not all the stories deal with sailing. The brief and predictable "Bald-Face" is the only tale of the Klondike Gold Rush included here. "The Banks of the Sacramento," one of the better offerings, features a fourteen-year-old boy, the son of a mine watchman, who is left to mind the operation while his father is out of town. The title selection, "Dutch Courage" involves two young men attempting to climb Half Dome in Yosemite. "An Adventure in the Upper Sea" takes place in a hot air balloon. The originality of the setting, unfortunately, is the only good thing it has going for it.The final entry in the book, "Whose Business is to Live," is by far the longest, and unlike the others it was written at the tail end of London's career. It takes place in 1914 during the Mexican Revolution. When the American Navy lands in Veracruz, the offended Mexicans retaliate against any gringos they can find. A small party of Americans in Tampico must make a 50 mile trip upriver to rescue their stranded loved ones. It offers nonstop action, but it's somewhat of a confusing mess. It demonstrates the overindulgence characteristic of many of London's later stories.Only the most diehard London fans need read Dutch Courage. It's a hodgepodge of good and bad pieces, with nothing really outstanding. While not a bad bunch of stories overall, when compared to almost any other collection published during London's lifetime, it just doesn't measure up.

Adventure Author, Jack London By tattoozak Jack London was a great American author, and one of the best short story compilations I have had the pleasure of enjoying! Would highly recommend this collection of adventure stories to anyone. Truly grand, as well as a lot of fun.

Review "Exciting and fun to read. Ebner's style reminded me of James Patterson's, short snappy sentences that keep you wanting more."- San Francisco Book Review                                                                                                           "A cinephile's search for family, sex and laughs, wrapped in a mystery. A fast-paced, humorous novel"  - Kirkus Reviews                                                                                                                   "The Brothers Coen would be proud" - J.O'Grady, Writers' Guild Award Winner                         "Visceral, lyrical scenes and his pacing of the novel is skilful" - Elise Howard, Editor of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman                                                   "The writing style is fast paced and oftentimes funny, and it's reminiscent of a black comedy; dark and amusing in its bluntness. Joe is a well developed character and full of rage about the loss of his girlfriend, and it's a look into the mind of a young boy who has just experienced a huge loss and doesn't have any idea how to process it all. It's easy to feel for him in his situation." - Portland Book Review

Set mainly in suburbia over one summer, at times it felt a bit like a movie with its pace , the flashbacks and the subplots reminiscent of a situation comedy. I thought the main character Joe was well developed and I really liked how it all came together at the end like a movie type ending. This is an enjoyable and entertaining read for fans of fiction and films.

By Larry Hoffer I'd rate this 3.5 stars.Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review. Many thanks to NetGalley and Pen and Picture for making it available! The story of a teenager who spends much of his life watching or thinking about movies, Michael Ebner's Movie Game reads kind of like a blockbuster movie. There's action, intrigue, mystery, romance, violence, sex, and even a little drama. But like many popular blockbusters there's so much shoehorned into the plot it veers off the rails from time to time, but its charm ultimately keeps you reading. It's the summer before Joe's senior year of high school. He spends nearly every waking moment watching or thinking about movies, or playing the rapid-fire Movie Game with his buddies, which he usually wins. He considers himself the defender of distraction-free movies, and often follows offenders home after the movie has ended. Joe also has late-night encounters with Nikki, who keeps their relationship a secret from her real boyfriend, and he's a big fan of dark dipping, or swimming in neighborhood pools late at night.Joe and his older sister have been keeping up appearances since their father disappeared three years ago and their mother left to live with her new boyfriend, afraid if authorities find out Joe is without parental supervision, social services may step in. While Joe is a cinephile, his sister is an excessive reader. But what Joe doesn't realize is that government agents have him on constant surveillance, because their father isn't quite who he said he was."Their excessive consumption of fiction was an essential distraction from their broken home."Suddenly Joe's life seems more and more like a movie—his new college-aged girlfriend may have hidden motives for their relationship, the stories he's been telling his sister to push her to live her own life are actually less elaborate than the truth, and then there's the increasingly annoying presence of the federal agents, who want his help tracking down his father, who has apparently become a terrorist. All that, and he's still dealing with the trauma of his high school girlfriend's tragic death three years earlier. Will Joe choose the bonds of family over the long arm of the law? Will he finally get the girl he deserves? Will he be able to continue winning at the Movie Game, or will a new competitor supplant him? And most importantly, will they all live happily ever after?Ebner's book is a little wacky and far-fetched (I can't tell you how often I had to remind myself that Joe was supposed to be entering his senior year in high school given his level of sophistication), but it's fun, funny, and even a little bit moving. There is a lot going on in this book—too much, I think—so the plot really goes all over the place, and you sometimes don't know what scenario you're in at a particular moment. But Joe is a fascinatingly charming yet flawed character, and you're compelled to keep reading to see where his story goes.Summer movie season may be over, but Movie Game is like a summer movie in book form. All you need is the popcorn.

The book opens with the main character, Joe, telepathically shouting to the couple in the movie theatre to, “Shut the hell up!” We’ve all been there, right? Imaging what we would like to do to those annoying theatre goers. Joe takes it a step further, he actually does do something to them. That in itself could be the plot of a story - someone stalking and getting even with people who annoy him at the movies. But that is just one tiny aspect of this crazy novel. There is so much going on in this novel. It has an almost movie-like feel to it, the scenes are so well described and the action and plot ruthlessly plowing ahead. Joe’s dad vanished 3 years ago and now some government agents are following him in case his dad gets in touch. There is a gorgeous new neighbor, Felicity, who makes him read books to be able to spend time with her. Joe is still recovering from the death of his girlfriend.Almost as interesting as all the twist and turns that takes place is the movie game that Joe and his friends play. One person names a movie, the next person has to name and actor in that movie and then name another movie that actor was in. For some reason, I am always drawn to characters that have some sort of obsession. A desire to deeply know all about something. I loved how much these characters loved movies.I didn’t realize that this was a YA novel. I found it very entertaining and if it was made into a movie, I would definitely want to watch it.I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
