It is not with Tom Haire the Irishman that we are concerned here, however, but with Brother Tom Haire, the servant of Christ. So fully has he lost himself in God that the text "Not I, but Christ," actually seems to be a reality in his life. I think I have never heard him quote the text, but his whole being is a living exemplification of it. He appears to live the text each moment of each day. After two years of growing acquaintance with and increasing appreciation of this man of faith I concluded that I owed it to the Christian public to share with them some of the good things God has given me through His servant Tom Haire. I have long felt and still feel that the practice of writing up living men and spreading them before the public is questionable. Especially is it bad when new converts are seized upon as gospel propaganda and paraded before the world as evidences of the truth of the Christian religion. Converted cowboys, opera stars and such have so completely captured the attention of the Christian public that it has become increasingly difficult to hold a sober view of the faith of our fathers. I do not want to contribute to this delinquency in any form, but I felt that a man who has been praying for fifty years as Tom has, and whose long godly life has been open to critical examination for that time, was safe material for a brief write-up. And besides, Tom is just a plumber, not a celebrity, so any interest he may arouse among Christians is bound to be spiritual. After Tom is gone someone will undoubtedly write a book about him. In the meantime, there are thousands of persons who might profit by knowing something of his life and teachings now. So low has the level of spirituality fallen among the churches that it is imperative that every effort possible be made to raise it; and one effective way to inspire Christians to press onward into the deep things of God is to show them that there are a few saintly souls among us even now, that the complexities and iniquities of the twentieth century have not wholly destroyed the art of prayer and spiritual communion of a Biblical quality. This knowledge may easily do more to encourage men and women in the pursuit of God than a thousand sermons could do.

His life and his testimony provide incredible insight into the God we serve and what it means to "pray without ceasing." I hope to read this book annually, because I desire what this man had. You will too.T. Seaman

49 of 52 people found the following review helpful. A Metatext By Bruce Kendall This is a work that should not be neglected by those interested in Flaubert or by lovers of French Literature. It's format resembles an old-fashioned cyclorama, which was basically a revolving canvas, portraying various interpretive images to an audience that would be seated in the middle of a room. Or it may recall the same period's "magic lantern" which would produce a similar effect, projecting a series of images on a flat wall, the precursor of modern cinema.Flaubert ushered in an entirely new sensibility to the world of letters. He reinvented the concept of the literary artist as word-and world shaper. The word is the world and vice-versa. No writer ever engaged in such a Herculean struggle to shape every word, every sentence, every image, every assonance or consonance to perfectly conform to his intention. Flaubert engaged in a kind of ascetisism his entire adult life, which is hardly news, but is central to an understanding of this work and to his attraction towards St. Anthony for a protagonist. Flaubert was for many years a kind of hermit in his study at Croisset, where he retired to his study to read books and write novels. He had contact with his mother and adopted niece and wrote letters to a mistress (Louise Collet, and later to George Sand) along with a few male friends. He would make brief sojourns into Paris, but for the most part, stayed to himself in his provincial hideaway. What he dreamt of there, besides his most famous works (Madame Bovary and L'Education Sentimentale) were reveries such as this novel and Salammbo, another book set in the Near-East and equally evocative in terms of his treatment of that region's sensual and Byzantine richness. "The Temptation" sparkles with some of Flaubert's most carefully and lovingly constructed imagery. It is the author's own homage to the fertility of his imagination. He never fathered a child literally that we know of, but this work and Salammbo were his ways of saying that he was fertile in all other respects. Each passing personage or creature is a seed sewn by this father of imagery. One of the most senseless and ill-informed utterances in the annals of criticism is Proust's comment that Flaubert never created one memorable metaphor. Flaubert's entire cannon is one vast metaphor. They are evident in every sentence and every passage of every novel he ever wrote. This is particularly true in this work, as any informed reader will no doubt conclude after reading it. One other area of recommendation extends to students of Gnosticism. Flaubert encapsulates much of the central theories of the early Gnostic Fathers and Apostles in a few well-delineated characterisations and brush strokes. I would also recommend the Penguin edition, edited and translated by Kitty Mrosovsky, for her introduction and notes. The only drawback I have with her is that she portrays Henry James as denigrating Flaubert's work, where in fact he generally effusively praises it. To those who can read it in its original text, I can only say I envy you and wish I were there.

By Harry Rutherford This is a startling and brilliant piece of prose poetry that deserves to be more widely read; just don't expect anything like his more conventional novels. Indeed, don't read it expecting a novel at all; it reads more like a cross between modernist poetry and Medieval vision literature.

A work of interest to the Flaubert aficionado By A Customer This work is likely to challenge those readers used to Flaubert's more representative works, i.e. Madame Bovary, Sentimental Education, "A Simple Heart." The difficulty lies not in novelty. The Temptation of Saint Anthony harkens back to the morality drama "Everyman" and Erasmus' In Praise of Folly. History notables, mythical personages, and personified qualities appear. Saint Anthony converses with the Queen of Sheba, Apollonius, Buddha, Isis, Venus, the Devil, and the Sphinx. Other characters are simply titled "A Child", "The Old Man", "The Stranger", and so on. These and others occur in a narrative structure that in print resembles the layout of a play. This mode lends itself to Flaubert's ambition to expunge the author's present from the work in the way Yeat's Byzantine dancer is indistinguishable from the dance. As Ms. Mrosovsky says in her lucid and comprehensive introduction Flaubert was so armored of this work he revised it several times during his career. She makes a case for The Temptation to be considered a significant part of the Flaubertian cannon. Most academicians, however, do not agree with this assessment as evidenced by the fact Madame Bovary is easy to come by more than a century after the author's death and The Temptation is not. The exquisite descriptive passages plus the profundities Flaubert attributes to the characters are not enough to endow this book with the dramatic tension and irony a reader finds in his better known works. This is not to relegate the book to obscurity. An encounter with Saint Anthony brings a reader to a fuller appreciation of the master's stringent art illustrated by his more famous novels.

This is a book about me. It’s a collection of poems and random writings that I have done over the last 22 years. You will find mostly dark inside. About 90% of the work in here was written while high on something that was not life. For a long time I buried all my feeling all of my emotions and this was my only non-physical outlet. I am not publishing these works for sympathy or compassion. I am publishing them for me. I want to slam doors on a few things and I think this is the best way to do it. No one but my friends and family will read it and I am ok with that. If you are someone unknown to me and you have decided to read my book. Thank you…I hope that maybe it if you have someone like me in your life that it will open some doors and shed some light on their situation.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. American treasure By V.C. Knight Gilbert de Motier de Lafayette, in honor of whom our National Guard is named, was truly the first knight of America, pure-hearted, and altruistic. This book chronicles the beloved "adopted" son of George Washington, who at 19 barely escaped arrest by King Louis XVI to come to fight for our cause. He was the key link in securing French aid that made the critical difference in our victory at Yorktown. Read how Washington had implicit trust in his talents as a great general charging him with cornering Lord Cornwallis in the southern campaign of the Rev War, with the future of our country at stake. The book clearly states Lafayette's role. A friend of Alexander Hamilton, Lafayette gave his fortune, his valor and his heart to the cause of our freedom not as a Frenchman, but as an American General. Read how he commanded with love and the example of his own leadership. Allow me to further enhance the value of Lafayette to our American heritage that the book omits, but is well detailed in Harlow Giles Unger's "Lafayette", which I recommend as a companion book. (Available on Amazon.com) Unger brings to live endearing stories that illuminate the personality of Lafayette and his value to America. While this book gives other specific accounts not detailed by Unger, especially the political dynamics of the time, Unger provides other details not covered in the writing style of Tower, typical of his time.( Eg.Upon Lafayette's visit to America in 1824, thousands of people thronged the streets to see him. Arches were built in the then 24 states and banquets were given in his honor; his picture was printed on everything from dishes, ladies gloves, arm bands and money. Upon his death America mourned him more than Washington, for more than a month officially. John Quincy Adams gave a 3-hour eulogy to a black-draped Congress, comparing Lafayette's pure heart to being a little below the angels.) Childhood heroics and teen-age antics and disdain for the frivalty of the French courts add to Lafayette's charm in Unger's book, as well as his military savvy and ingenuity, but again, this was not the style of wrting in Towers'day, yet Tower gives other insightful accounts and is held to be a valuable author. I most highly recommend this book for the serious reader, as well as the reader looking for an over-all view of Lafayette's time in America(not going back to Lafayette's formative years in France.) I have many books on Lafayette, and consider this a very valuable asset.Lafayette's importance in our history and therefore why this book is beneficial,is reflected in the fact that the ship on which Lafayette returned to America with French aid, the Hermione,is being reconstructed in France and is scheduled to sail to America in 2012. Ask yourself why over 600 America schools, organizations, cities, streets, counties etc. in America are named for Lafayette.(Eg. Lafayette College, The American Friends of Lafayette, the Massachusetts Lafayette Society.) This book will illuminate the fact that the name of Lafayette should be near and dear to our hearts and lips as is the name of George Washington, whose reputed stoic heart was won over by the endearing Lafayette. Together with Unger's book you will feel great American pride in claiming Lafayette as a founding father and an American treasure.

My friend is particularly interested in the Marquis de La Fayette. It also helped me realize why there is a prominent street in downtown New York City named Lafayette!

Unfolding in Light: A Sisters' Journey in Photography and Poetry, by Joan Scott, Claire Scott

Review “It is always a joy to look through an extensive collection of photographs and see a very high standard set and adhered to . . . These pictures portray the enormous eloquence of the human hand. I was amazed at the range of emotional interaction that can be expressed in an image of a hand and the panoply of relationships that can be communicated . . . A most successful and worthy undertaking.” ―Dick Bond, photographer and astrophysicist “Your images of the art work are wall hangers. They are wonderfully exposed and composed and well balanced in regards to white balance. Great job.” ―Elliot Stern of Blue Ridge Photography

From the Back Cover "The incisive poems of Claire Scott are the perfect complement to the expressive photography of Joan Scott. Claire probes the vagaries of everyday life and Joan's close in images of hands symbolically express often overlooked aspects of the human experience . . . an eloquent and evocative rendering."         --Robert Madden, former National Geographic senior assistant editor               and staff photographer"When do we ever stop to take time to look at hands? To understand their meaning in our lives, their work, their patience, their skill, their wonder? Here is a book celebrating hands, stunning images illustrating their capacity, awesome words illustrating the images, two sisters working together like two hands."         --Kim Chernin, author of In My Mother's House and The Hungry Self

Best Read Slowly By David Sharp Joan Scott and Claire Scott, sisters, have collaborated to create a wonderfully unique book with "Unfolding in Light." Joan Scott has captured photographs of hands - hands of all shapes, sizes, and ages - doing many of the things that hands do every day. Claire Scott has written a poem matched to each photo, reflecting the thoughts and inner feelings inspired in her by the image. Each pair of pages - photo and poem - tells its own story that can also unlock personal memories for the reader. I enjoyed the book most by reading slowly, allowing myself time to reflect on each picture and poem and to relate personally with the message they convey and the memories they evoke. For giving me a chance to discover my own thoughts and memories and relate them to the stories told by the hands in this book, I give "Unfolding in Light" a five-star rating.

I'm personally not related to the Roberdeau family, but this genealogy included a detailed piece on General Daniel Roberdeau. I believe one of my ancestors may have worked for him at Fort Roberdeau in Huntingdon County, PA. This book gave an excellent account of what life in the mid 1770s must have been like.

This book follows a family whose father dies leaving them destitute. It's message of faith, family, endurance and hard work, and charitable kindness from unexpected sources, weave together a wonderful story of survival, redemption, and hope. The story is of times gone by long ago, but the truths told therein are as or more valid today than ever. Well written and enjoyable to read. It's always nice when good wins out and the tables are turned .

It reminds us that sometimes sudden occurences can wreck or strengthen a household. In times when sustenance is wholly dependent on a father with only a small income to support a wife and children sudden illness or catastrophe may occur to bring the family to total helplessness and indigency. The workhouse, beggary or seeking help from relatives are the usual options unless there is a strong determination to help themselves. Quite the reverse for most today. Most look for immediate solutions from others rather than themselves. It is not always the wealthy that are successful but those with a purpose and determination to seek out every opportunity to help themselves. The Halliburton family began again from the bottom working at menial tasks to supply their basic needs. They were not ashamed of the work. By trusting in God, working hard, even helping others that were worst off than they were. The family developed a reputation for honesty and kindness which helped them to regain independence and earn the respect of the community. Having a goal and pursuing it no matter how long it takes is the lesson learned from this book. If they had let the injustice done by others fester in their minds, they would have not been able to look beyond to contemplate a future filled with successful endeavors. It is a great pity that our children are not taught or choose not to learn these lessons that are the foundation for building character and the key to a happy life. The book may be preachy and old fashioned but a wonderful read.

I think she brings a humor to her characters that is lacking in almost any of her contemporaries except for Dickens, Trollop and Thackery. She lacks the depth of social commentary of those three, but there is still plenty to be taken from her stories. The backdrop of this story, a small English manufacturing town trying to adjust to the changes brought by free trade policies is handled deftly throughout the book. I think that is sometimes less true with the smaller, and more personal, stories of the redemption of hard work and the rewards of selflessness. She doesn't handle these themes as delicately as she might and frequently beats the reader over the head with the same issues, which eventually becomes tedious. In any case, if you like the above mentioned authors I think you will enjoy Wood's work. Of course her most famous book, "East Lynne" is a more gripping and coherent tale which you might read first to see what she can do when writing at her best.

Excerpt from Socialism of Christ: Or Attitude of Early Christians, Toward Modern ProblemsLike all other great world movements, Christianity was at first largely political and socialistic, and depended on this character for its propagation. The common people in the time of Christ, as at present in Paris and Berlin, were dissatisfied in their misery, and looked for some revolution to relieve them. The disaffection of poverty against wealth, of labor against capital, of commonalty against aristocracy, of subject against ruler, and of slave against master was general throughout the Roman Empire. The lower classes as a body, demanded deliverance from their wrongs and better chances in the over-crowded avenues to wealth and happiness.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The title intrigued at first then the date 1890! What a topic for 120 years ago. the book is quite excellent, while occasionally referring to obscure period events, he mostly uses Jesus sayings to show a strong relation to Communist or Socialist ideals and leanings. A very interesting title and perhaps not a fun read, yet i couldnt put it down.

A masterful collection of stories that stretch the limits of the imagination by Hon Lai-chu, one of Hong Kong’s most dazzling young authors. Reviews “Evocatively written and expertly translated, these Hong Kong stories will draw you into Hon Lai-chu’s surreal and yet recognizable world.” — Howard Goldblatt, translator of Nobel laureate Mo Yan “The Kite Family showcases the work of Hon Lai-chu, a wildly creative Hong Kong writer. The stories, elegantly translated by Andrea Lingenfelter, range from the torn-from-the-headlines dystopian anxieties of “Notes on an Epidemic” to the more surrealistic “Forrest Woods, Chair,” which takes themes from Kafka’s Metamorphosis in an engagingly novel direction. The book benefits greatly from an introduction by Lingenfelter, which both explains her approach to rendering Hon’s prose into English and shows how the author’s stories fit into Hong Kong’s fascinating and globally too-little-known literary landscape.” — Jeffrey Wasserstrom, author of China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know Hon Lai-chu pulls us into worlds we did not realize were hiding within our own. • A man unable to find work turns himself into a chair so that he will be worth something to society. • A disease that targets lonely people has become a deadly epidemic, and a single woman is forced to become part of an artificial family in the hope that traditional roles can restore her health. • A young girl tries to make sense of growing up in a family where everyone becomes morbidly obese and her relatives exhibit increasingly bizarre behavior: her melancholy aunt tears down all her curtains to make a new gown for meeting a mysterious stranger; her sister tries vainly to drift into the sky as a kite; and her grandmother consumes (literally) all the family inheritance. Hon’s first full-length book in English, The Kite Family brings a glowing voice to contemporary English literature. With this collection, renowned translator Andrea Lingenfelter (known for her translation of Lillian Lee’s famous Farewell My Concubine) has brought another masterpiece to extraordinary life. Steeped in the atmosphere of a lucid dream, this is a collection that will jolt the mind and delight the senses. About the Author Critics have called Hon Lai-chu “the most outstanding young author in Hong Kong.” She has authored eight Chinese books and won numerous awards, including the Hong Kong Biennial Award for Chinese Literature, Taiwan’s Unitas New Writer’s Novella first prize, and the Hong Kong Book Prize. Review

Dystopian... disturbing. The collection has been fluently translated by Andrea Lingenfelter who also contributes an informative and useful introduction to the writer and her work.

About the Author

Critics have called Hon Lai-chu called "the most outstanding young author in Hong Kong." Her clean, absurd and abstract style is often compared to Franz Kafka. Her intensely psychological stories often reflect her characters' inner struggles for freedom, against the futility of attempts to find meaning in everyday existence. She has won numerous awards, including the Hong Kong Biennial Award for Chinese Literature for fiction, Taiwan's Unitas New Writer's Novella first prize, and the Hong Kong Book Prize. Her books have twice been named to the list of Top Ten Chinese Novels Worldwide, in 2008 and 2009. She was a 2010 resident at the University of Iowa International Writing Program.

Weird yet eminently intriguing By StarryNight I found The Kite Family by Hon Lai-chu an interesting, odd and somewhat unsettling read; in fact I had to read a few of the stories a couple of times to ensure that I had grasped the subtle nuances of the text. The prose is stark yet evocative and offers an intriguing insight into modern day Hong Kong and issues such as dehumanisation, racism, and the harsh realities of trying to get on in an aggressively progressive society that renders many invisible.Hon Lai-chu successfully draws the reader into a visceral yet bewildering world of ennui, yearning, loneliness and imagination.Kudos must go to Andrea Lingenfelter for a fluid translation that feels like the authentic voice of the author. In sum I would certainly recommend this collection of short stories to readers looking for something a little different!I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in order to review.

Surrealistic, unconventional and pretty odd By SC Andrea Lingenfelter, the translator of The Kite Family by Hon Lai Chu, gives us a captivating introduction why these stories are an important part of Hong Kong's literary fiction, as issues such as humanity, migration, xenophobia, family dysfunction, and deformity are presented. Compared against mainland China's fiction, which mostly focuses on China's particular themes and settings, HK fiction never had any restrictions. Her enthusiasm for this translation project made me look forward to delve into this collection.Sadly, I didn't make it too far into each story. Surrealistic, unconventional and pretty odd, I couldn't get into them. Neither did I feel any connection to the characters. Everything was just way out-there, any metaphorical meaning and symbolism flew right past me. I tried every story, but in the end I simply gave up and stopped reading.Review copy supplied by publisher through NetGalley in exchange for a rating and/or review.

Blurring the lines between reality and dream worlds By Oi Lan This collection of stories is a strange and surreal journey led by the author Lai Chu Hon, who is from Hong Kong. It starts on a jarring, somewhat grotesque note with the the first story, Spoiled Brains, which was my least favorite. Hon's stories thereafter become more subtle and more enjoyable. The title story, The Kite Family, is a poignant, but surreal and symbolic, coming-of-age story about a girl whose entire family mysteriously grows obese in adulthood. Two other favorites were Heartbreak Hotel, about a woman's struggle to free herself from her memories of an abusive husband, and Notes From an Epidemic, about a young single woman forced to join an "artificial" family. In a similar vein but more comical was Forrest Woods, Chair, in which an unfortunate young man literally transforms into a chair. These stories have a Hong Kong flavor, but they are pretty universal. Throughout, Hon is able to blur the lines between reality and the dream worlds that her characters inhabit. I loved the dreamlike quality of her writing (and the translation) and highly recommend this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. No text - just a table of contents By Evelyn C. Leeper Just as with volume 2, this is just the table of contents, not the book. (That is apparently too short. Then again, so was the book.)

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Worthless By Richard Evans Lee This is only the table of contents. Not the book. A mistake since Amazon as all of the other complete volumes as free ebooks.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The History of the Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire Volume 3 By Jon Ball I've wanted to read this book for years. I thought that listening to while driving would solve my problem. Nope. I cannot tolerate this reader. He is monotone and dull. It was not safe for me to be on the road while listening to this book. Eventually I would have been in prison for vehicular manslaughter caused by this book putting me soundly to sleep. I even tried giving it away. No one else could stand it either.

THAT going to the seaside was the very beginning of everything—only it seemed as though it were going to be a beginning without an end, like the roads on the Sussex downs which look like roads and then look like paths, and then turn into sheep tracks, and then are just grass and furze bushes and tottergrass and harebells and rabbits and chalk.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. One of her best; especially good for well-read bookish types By A Customer I love all of E. Nesbit's books; they are some of my dearest childhood favorites. I also really like the Enchanted Castle, The Magic City, and The Story of the Amulet. Wet Magic is more poetic and literate; there seems to be more visual beauty, and I love the scene where the book characters are literally coaxed out of all their books to help with the battle.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, but want more details. By A Customer This is a great book for any young reader, especially those interested in fantasy and mythology, although some parts are much different than the "tradional" view of merfolk in general (such as removable tails), but the story was good. What I noticed first was the ommission of various details, such as how they suddenly learn of the mermaid's name or leaving out details in the battles towards the end. I did find, however, that the narrator does a good job of telling the tale, like a mother would tell it to her daughter. All in all, a good story with a little action and lots of magical adventure.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love love love book. Hate the way the quote marks appear! By avidreader As all Nesbit - magical magic and wonderfully real children to enjoy it in the story. Could NOT give fewer than 5 stars even though the weird quote marks make the dialogue hard to read. If the editor/publisher sees this- PLEASE fix this format problem..."quote marks are supposed to look like this" not how they appear in this edition.
