“I write for those women who do not speak,” said Audre Lorde. But in the case of Paper Cranes, Dinah Dietrich writes as a lesbian speaking for herself, with delicacy and honesty, about her journey from silence to speech. The poems are situated in a diminished present, remembering childhood and family, painful and pleasurable moments, like the red paper crane of the title poem which gave her “the gift of experience / the gift of memory.” With the utmost economy, a small stanza can evoke a lifetime of deprivation: “In my room at home, / I struggle for light. / The plants strangle / at the small window.” With a fine ear and a light touch, Dietrich courageously charts a course back to life from the brink of death. For those of us who have been to this outsider’s hell, it’s a comfort to hear the voice of a sister traveler.

The poems in PAPER CRANES use straightforward language, telling the stories of a woman's life that is not so straightforward after all. "I’m so mad my hair could burst into flame" A witness to her own lesbian life, the simple narrative language is heightened by color, anger, and memory. Hard to pick but perhaps my favorite line in the book is, "My dolls got sick and vomited/while he built forts."

Her journey, from "small strips/ of light leaked in/ along the window edges" to "I am wild at night/in my apartment/making peanut butter toast,/making a poem" is elegantly told. With just the right words, it is easy to feel her pain and her pleasure. Many of us can relate to Dinah's vivid memories.Thank you, Amazon, for making this book available.

Dietrich finds herself understanding and accepting her own sexual orientation as she quietly explores the relationships she has had with her individual parents and her grandmother. The grandmother comes off a bit better than the parents, but there is acceptance here, and judgment giving way to kindness.WaterI cup my hands together, drink the cold waterthat runs into my handsfrom the tap on the sinkI stand in the hospital bathroom, and drink, imaginingthe small stream of fresh waterthat flowed once,in the Adirondacks, upstate New Yorkmy mother taught mehow to cup my hands and drink, imagining she could teach mehow stones can flavor waterIn this poem, we don’t know who is in the hospital, or even what kind of hospital it is. But a hospital implies illness, and a few of the other poems suggest this is an illness involving a mother. You can read it one way – the poet is the hospital patient – or read it another – the poet is visiting someone in the hospital. The perspectives, as in many of Dietrich’s poems, conjures up very different images and understandings.Dietrich writes poetry, memoir, and fiction. Her poems have been published in such literary magazines as The Berkshire Anthology and Sinister Wisdom and in the anthology A Slant of Light. She received her B.A. in literature from Bennington College and her M.A, in Literature fro the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She lives in upstate New York.

The author didn't pull any punches with the story and told it exactly how it happened. Kudos to the Postal Inspectors who helped him finish the investigation and find justice.

Brown Very authentic voice telling a gripping story of real-life police work and the personal sacrifices involved. With reflective "voice-overs" accompanying the first-person narration, this story evolves into a tale of Ahab-like obsession and perseverance.

I set out on the path of writing to work through all the stuff that floats around my thick skull, and that's mostly what this book is about. It was only through the encouragement of others, that it was actually formed into a book and has been brought to you. In everything I write there is an intent to move the reader one way or the other. All of my work that could not accomplish this was left on the hard drive of my computer and will stay there. Through my words and their meanings, I want you to think and feel something, good or bad it does not matter as long as it takes you somewhere. I hope that reading this book can open your mind to new thoughts and new ideas and give you something to carry through your day. Thank you, B.D. Smith

But if you'll choose to dig, you'll possibly find, with courage, some more of the true yourself. This book is a gift, for you, in the same measure you'll want to take the responsibility to search and find the true yourself. This book is inspirational, thought-provoking, scanning the spectrum of countless feelings, in a variety of expressive tones ranging from lyrical to cryptic, from paining to cheerful, from serious to ironic. This book is a life-changer, if you want to, and your life is the one that can be changed. Thanks to this book.

On 1st March'16, when I received the book 'The Cloak of Mixed Emotions' (actually the time was to keep my every single neuron and vein in control).Fair to say after eons reading, its each page is just evocative. Not a just page, even its each line is literally profound (gives a pause to soak into it first then go ahead). Heart says just a line; perfection follows the heart, and mind says; a lyrical biography at a glance.Words are not enough to say for the vivid release. It's a must-read from a front to back cover for the lovey-dovey class. Nobody could answer yet that what love is, and every single of us needs to clarify it, so the book alone is enough to do that. There is much to learn, much to feel... I received not a book but a pile of positive vibes. It has engrossed me thoroughly. Alhamdulillah, reading it is truly a pleasure, the shelf is now with full of treasure! Much love for the writer for giving such a heart wrenching, mind changing read (and energy that I receive from her words). I am sure to get more from the author (whatever the relationship status is).Best wishes for the success and peaceful life. And, ya' thanks to Amazon, after all, has started shipping to Pakistan, and for timely shipment as well.Big thanks!

There is a saying that "Don't judge the book by its cover" and rightly so but there is nothing bad in judging a book by its name. And after reading a couple of poems I tried to put it aside only to get it once again because the thirst was not quenched yet. "The Cloak" (on page 8) can be thought as the essence of the book, it summed up the human nature in rhythmic style. In my opinion, this book should be read randomly and this is the real beauty of it. The author should be praised due to the fact that English is her foreign language and writing poems is considered to be the most difficult task as far as the literature is concerned. It is really worth reading and a book which will make you think about lots of things which you would have otherwise ignored.

She writes with a sure hand, an experienced hand and creates images that you have not seen before. Hers is a unique voice in the world of poetry, tackling topics not-so-easily discussed. Her work needs read. I highly recommend you do so.

By Anisa Gandevivala Louise’s work always stills me; each word precise and yet, multitudes of meaning packed in… into each word…and, from there, she draws you into the pleasure of reading and what it means to read from a body—to read with a mind, while it’s wishing to be a body. Her poems never scream at you; neither do they quiver feebly from a corner. They are right there in exactly the place they want to be– in a shape carved out for exactly the way it exists—the poems never say they were carving out this space, though, you never knew the space existed. You are the one who would have to learn to see. If you love poetry, I hope you will pick up this book and re-read it every time you wish to come alive.

Befus Sometimes in my mind, I imagine life's worst-case scenarios and I think, "If that happened, I don't think I would survive. I couldn't make it through." But then I remember Robyn Dykstra's story in The Widow Wore Pink and I think, "Wait a minute! I can get through anything. She did." We all need a story like hers to hold on to – to give us hope, to cheer us on.The Widow Wore Pink is Robyn's story of survival, of finding God in our worst-cases, of trusting Him along the way, of experiencing His faithfulness when life stinks. I couldn't put it down. I just never knew what was going to happen next. An ex-Playboy Bunny in a Bible Study? Say what? I cried. I gasped. I blushed. I laughed (a lot) ... separately and all at the same time! But most importantly, I walked away from The Widow Wore Pink with a renewed hope in how good, faithful, loving and big our God really is. I NEEDed this story. I'm deeply thankful for it. You will be too. Get it. Read it. It won't disappoint!Thank you, Robyn! You are a gifted storyteller!Lauren BefusConnect Pastor, Vineyard North Church

By Lou Filled with tragedy yet joy and peace.I knew Robyn was an awesome women of God, but I did not know how awesome! That she is victorious and able and willing to encourage other widows, like me, is a miracle. It is a miracle that is spreading God's Word even more now that she has been willing to share her tragedies, shortcomings, joy, and peace via her seminars and now via her new autobiography.Robyn's story will capture you. You will find yourself hanging on to every detail. This book is not only for widows. It offers encouragement to all who have been downtrodden, whether it be because of drugs, depression, or other trials. There is hope for all of us in God's love. I would like to see this book made into a movie.

She is an incredibly wise and has a compelling story, for sure, but I had no idea what an amazing story teller she is. This book is a phenomenal piece of literature. Sometimes I would read a sentence over and over just to hear the way she described things. I have read many memoirs and this is one of the greats. Not your run-of-the-mill, shallow or cliched christian book. I will be buying many copies for Christmas gifts this year.

Even when I had figured out why the girls had been kidnapped and killed, I had no idea who had done it. When I read this book a second time, a year later, and knew who the killer was, Dobyns's writing is so powerful, and the story so unpredictable, that I began to doubt my memory. The really disturbing aspect of the novel is the way the townspeople begin to distrust each other, and the fact that some people even go so far as to act violently towards people who were once their friends. Most upsetting, though, is the ending. I won't give anything away here, you'll have to read it for yourselves. This novel is deliciously creepy and sometimes quite grahpic. If you prefer your thrillers without graphic crime scene descriptions, you might want to check out Dobyns's later novel, _The Boy in the Water_. However, the scenes here are not gratuitous -- they are very necessary to the plot of the novel. This killer's violence is in many ways symbolic, and these descriptions are important to solving the mystery. All in all, this novel is an excellent read, and will gratify mystery and horror readers alike.I can't wait to read another thriller from Stephen Dobyns!

I imagine that most readers of this review are looking for a good thriller/serial killer novel; this book is certainly that, and an excellent one. Dobyns uses some wonderful techniques to create the sort of suspense that keeps you up at night. Even the most seasoned readers of serial killer novels will be uncertain what exactly is going on until the last few pages. But what is even more interesting, this "whodunnit" is the story about a small town that has fallen under the shadow of murder and abduction. This is not a novel about police hunting down a serial killer, but rather, a novel about what happens to the inhabitants of a sleepy rural town when they are confronted with the fact that one of them (at least) is a monster.Still better, though, is Dobyns' masterful narrative. It takes a lot of courage to stray away from the omniscient and anonymous third person and the tell-all biographical first person narratives. Dobyns, however, has done just that. Our narrator is a real person, a teacher at the local high school. He himself plays only a minor role in the story he tells and admits to not knowing everything. Frequently the story is told in a thrid person voice, but the narrator always provides us with the source of his information, so that the feeling of authenticity is maintained. Dobyns brings this town so vibrantly alive that you begin to wonder if this is really fiction.Dobyns has proved himself to be a masterful storyteller -- don't deprive yourself of this wonderful experience.

Warner I read this book last summer while sitting beside a swimming pool on a hot, humid August day in the middle of the sweltering urban swamp of Washington, D.C. Despite the 98-degree temperature, and 90 percent humidity, I had persistent goose flesh and chills. If you like a good scare, here's one shudder-fest you should NOT miss.THE CHURCH OF DEAD GIRLS stands head and shoulders above most of the last two decade's releases in the horror genre. Until I read this first Stephen Dobyns' release, I was convinced that REAL horror existed only on the six o'clock news. Thank you Mr. Dobyns for proving me wrong. This book is extraordinarily well crafted. It's hip! It's witty! And it's full of horrific images and unexpected plot twists that really get under your skin where they fester and grow -- and keep revisiting you even weeks after you've finished reading. And because of its sheer realism, THE CHURCH OF DEAD GIRLS is pure nightmare bait. This one will be hard to top.For some of us, a good scare has the same affect as a good laugh, a good cry or some other really intense, orgasmic release. In a nutshell, this book creeped me out! God, how I love that!
