A TRAVELER AT FORTY, by THEODORE DREISER

About the Author Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945), American novelist, was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, and attended Indiana University. He began his writing career as a newspaperman, working in Chicago, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh. His first novel, Sister Carrie (1900), was purchased by a publisher who thought it objectionable and made little effort to promote its sale. With the publication of The Financier in 1912, he was able to give up newspaper work and devote himself to writing. He became known as one of the principal exponents of American naturalism, and in 1944, he was awarded the Merit Medal for Fiction by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Quaint By Kerry Marshall Love Dreiser's fictional work and this book gives a little insight into the man behind Sister Carrie and An American Tragedy. Penned in the genre of a travel log--a quaint habit of many authors in that earlier age--Dreiser manages to make a trip to Europe interesting reading. I especially enjoyed the part where he describes the Borgias...

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. the old maestro By Wayne F. Burke Dreiser continues with his 1911-12 trip to Europe. The old bore sounds like tourist-guide book: "The magnificent arch or bridge of pierced stone revealing exquisite and almost endless workmanship divides the nave from the choir" (pg. 320). Can't stop himself from gushing over the bourgeois world of baubles and doo-dads, nor in describing one delightful scene then rushing to another even more delightful and, in graduating scale, turning to even further delightfullnesses. Also, the irritating pronouncements of blatant generalities as profundities: "The Parisian...lives by the way, out of books, restaurants, theaters, boulevards, and the spectacle of life generally" (pg. 326). Usually, when other company is involved, Dreiser becomes, well... Dreiserian, as in the great portrait he draws of Huge Lane, antithesis of Dreiser's chaperone Grant Richards...In Italy (chap. 58) and once again alone, Dreiser seems to be writing some sort of Baedeker travel guide full of gushing appreciation for the facade of Italy. "It was beautiful." All splashed with a veneer of history--goes ga-ga over Venice, but notes uninteresting because way too much Dresier who pairs off, finally, when he picks up girl on a train--a "phlegmatic" type girl, as opposed to "lymphatic" type. Girl costs him 65$, he writes...The old maestro never loses his sense of wonder, his child-like awe and reverence for life as it is, as it exists...He keys in on German smartness, efficiency, force--is struck by the military pageantry--the endemic German military uniform as adding color and zest to German scene (1912). Fortunately, for the reader, Herr Dreiser meets up with a crew in Berlin and he, and his narrative, become interesting again. Humanity is, after all, Dreiser's topic (along with some metaphysix (sic)...On return to America Dreiser unable to get on the Titanic so takes later boat--receives news of Titanic disaster while en route to NY (whew!).

By John Silence is Golden I picked up the 1934 edition of this book the mid 1960s at a Salvation Army store for a quarter. It has been part of my personnal library ever since. Lord Frederick Hamilton was a long service diplomat and foriegn service attache who was posted at one time or another it seemed everywhere. Berlin, Vienna, St Petersberg, {Petrograd}, Moscow, Lisbon, Tokyo, Buenos Ayres, Rio de Janeiro, Asuncion are amoung the places that he wonderfully describes his, meetings with the rich, powerfull, monarchs, officals high and low, servants, peasants - men and women of vanished times and places a plethora of adventures and memories.Lord Hamilton is particularily excellent in his reminisces on his visits to and memories of Imperial Russia prior to 1914. His detailed and sometimes humorous impressions on the dreaded "Secret Police", the "Frenchified" Russian aristocracy, a Russian peasant village, an exciting wolf and bear hunt, the national problem of "Drunkeness", an Russian Orthodox Easter Mass Service, privately touring the Winter palace and viewing the accumulated treasures of the Russian Crown in it and the Kremlin {before the Communists and Nazis destroyed and dispersed them} are related by the author in detail and with real feeling for the country and the friendships that he made and maintained. But it is not all pomp, the incident of him bathing and brushing his teeth with 1/2 the population of a Russian peasant village watching him and commenting {in his hearing} their opinions about his actions is priceless. Or in Jamacia on how he came to taking a formal afternoon tea with 5 ladies while he was clad only in a red plush table cloth !! Or how the British minister in Buenos Ayres gets involved in a "squirt gun" type water fight with {it seems} 1/2 the population of the city and his clothes in rags !!His visit to Japan in the early 1920s - his descriptions of the countryside, Tokyo, the Japanese nobility, peasant farmers, the Japanese diet, homes, palaces, gardens, and the characther {in his view} of the Japanese people - where Japan had come from and where he thought the Japanese people were going {Pre - 1923} is unique and perceptive if not totally politically correct for 2013-14. Overall this is one of the best area's of the book. His telling of how Young Prince Wilhelm {The future Kaiser Wilhelm 11} thru his own stubborn arrogance nearly lost his life in an drowning accident at Potsdam in 1880 is another gem that I have never seen related any where else - and he adds a really venomous personnal comment about the incident!!If you are interested in late 19th and early 20th century social and political history related in a simple, elegant writting style highlighting an era, his friendships and good memories but tinged with sadness of the countries, places and lives that World War 1 had destroyed, civilizations now "Gone with the Wind" - then this is a 5 star book to savor. However, even the general reader that is not familiar with this era would enjoy and appreciate Lord Hamiltons memories - Highly Recommended.

I don't mind paying five bucks for a quality ebook reproduction of a public domain work. But this one has a scan error in its very first word. The book begins with a "peeface," rather than a "preface." Not a good sign.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A charming Victorian reprint. By The Strife of Love in a Dream This quaint reprint from 1893 from "Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine" is a very Victorian look at the Florentine Renaissance. Quite obviously colored by a Victorian's view of the world, it's not what I'd consider a very serious scholarly look at the history of the era, but nothing in it looks totally off-base and it definitely does give a good feel for the era. Watch for Victorian sexism and racism (and sanctimonious ethnocentrism) to rear its head repeatedly in this short little paperback; such unintentional humor made the book ten times more fun to read. The book gives a great general look at how the city looked, how people dressed, how they felt about religion and politics, and how they ran their households. Architecture is briefly touched upon, as are wedding customs, food and diet, and favorite games and physical activities. In 25 pages, just about everything gets mentioned briefly. I found the book useful as it quotes a few sources I hadn't really looked at before but which I see now would be good to pursue further to get a better understanding of 15th-century Florence. I do recommend this charming reprint, not because it's 100% accurate, but because it's such a good, quick review of the time.

Let us watch these mighty ones as they pass silently by. First, Orpheus, playing upon the seven stringed lyre of his own being, the music of the spheres. Then Hermes, the thrice greatest, with his emerald tablet of divine revelation. Through the shades of the past we dimly see Krishna, the illuminated, who on the battlefield of life taught man the mysteries of his own soul. Then we see the sublime Buddha, his yellow robe not half so glorious as the heart it covered, and our own dear Master, the man Jesus, his head surrounded with a halo of Golden Flame, and his brow serene with the calm of mastery. Then Mohammed, Zoroaster, Confucius, Odin, and Moses, and others no less worthy pass by before the eyes of the student. They were the Sons of Flame. From the Flame they came, and to the Flame they have returned. To us they beckon, and bid us join them, and in our robes of self-earned glory to serve the Flame they love.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A failed negotiations case study from the inside perspective By Penny L. Parker Robert Lansing was President Wilson's Secretary of State and at one point the lead US negotiator in the World War I peace negotiations. He did not agree with many of Wilson's proposals and tactics and was eventually marginalized by Wilson in the negotiations team. Lansing resigned as Secretary of State in 1920.This book is a fascinating account of what happened from Lansing's perspective. Many of the differences he had with Wilson can be argued to have been right, in light of the generally accepted belief today that the negotiations were a failure on many levels. Lansing's book reads in part a bit petty and defensive because he didn't get his way on many points. But he also had strong expertise in international negotiations and that comes through in many of his observations. Many of his ideas would be validated by today's thinking on smart negotiation tactics -- but Wilson didn't agree at the time and we'll never know whether Lansing's approaches would have led to a more successful negotiation result. This book is an interesting glimpse into the ego and brilliance of the negotiator who was left behind. Lansing is a reasonably good writer and his account is entertaining especially if you are a fan of case studies in negotiations. His discussion of the micro-tactics of negotiation seem especially perceptive. The book is widely available in e-format on the Internet, at Project Gutenberg and other places, but the Kindle format makes it convenient for annotating and highlighting. Regrettably, however, the Kindle format does not yet have an interlinked table of contents. There are also some illustrations in the original book that are not included in the Kindle version, but this is also true of the other e-book formats that I've come across. Here is the table of contents of the book so you can have some idea of how it is organized:1. Reasons for writing a personal narrative2. Mr. Wilson's presence at the Peace Conference3. General Plan for a League of Nations4. Substitute articles proposed5. The affirmative guaranty and balance of power6. The President's Plan and the Cecil Plan7. Self-determination8. The Conference of January 10, 19199. A resolution instead of the Covenant10. The Guaranty in the revised Covenant11. International arbitration12. Report of Commissionn on League of Nations13. The system of mandates14. Differences as to the League recapitulated15. The proposed Treaty with France16. Lack of an American programme17. Secret diplomacy18. The Shantung settlement19. The Bullitt AffairConclusionAPPENDICESI. J. J. M. (Jan Jakob Maria) de Groot, Ph.D., (1854-1921) was a Dutch Sinologist and historian of religion. In this scholarly book published in 1910, he details the history, rituals, and beliefs of the major traditional religions of China: universal animism, polydemonism, specters, ancestral worship, Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. He thought that one spiritual essence could be detected beneath a great variety of religious, philosophical, and even political expressions in China, and his lifework was the discovery and exposition of that essence. The reader should be mindful that this was written while China was still under its imperial system of government with an emperor at its head, prior to the revolutions which established a republic and later a communist system that eschewed any state religion. Currently China is officially an atheist country. The CIA World Factbook reports China's religions as "Daoist (Taoist), Buddhist, Christian 3%-4%, Muslim 1%-2%". (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ch.html on Feb 4, 2013), therefore although this eBook is over 100 years old, it is still relevant to modern China's culture and traditions.

Old but great By Amazon Customer Clearly, with a 100 year old book you are going to have some out of date information but this book is written very well. In fact, for much of the book the author writes as if he's a firm believer of Taoism but eventually you see that he is not. The reason I mention this is that his writing is so academic that you do not get the feeling that he is trying to change your opinion, he is simply trying to help you understand this religion which is common in not just China but other countries as well. The book is well worth the price and I highly recommend it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very interesting and informative, although outdated By the scuNk Obviously this is an older book, and a lot of the things it says are probably no longer true about the state of China and whatnot. But it gives a good look at a lot of the differences and relationships between the religions in China.

The Legends Of Genesis, by Hermann Gunkel

From the Back Cover First published in 1901, The Legends of Genesis is a scholarly investigation of the books of Genesis as a product of humanity before historical records were considered important and kept for posterity. Some of the stories found within the book of Genesis are legends, telling the tale of particular people in a poetic form separate from history, reporting the literal truth but capturing the essence of an event.

This book takes a critical look at Genesis as literature and aims to teach its readers how dissect one of the world's most influential pieces of writing. Biblical scholars and students of literature will find this an informative and enlightening read.

About the Author Hermann Gunkel (18621932) taught at several German universities and is widely recognized as a father of the form-critical and history-of-religions methods in biblical criticism. His influential works include commentaries on Genesis, Psalms, and 1 Peter.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Academic view of Genesis from early 1900's By Todd Sharp This made for an interesting read, although the transition to eBook didn't go 100% smoothly. There are some spelling errors and places where it appears that an OCR software didn't recognize characters. There are also places where the translation from the original German to English is a bit awkward.Technical problems aside, the book was pretty good.Legends of Genesis holds true to its title and does lead the reader through a process of interpreting Genesis as a collection of legends and explaining the value of the book in this light. Genesis has lost a lot of its value to modern readers, because our view of it has been altered by the Enlightenment and our equating legends or mythology with being 'untrue'.Later, it assumes that the reader is familiar with the authorship and redactors of the Bible, pointing to examples where each writing style or agenda to the redactor is in the text of Genesis. If you don't have a passing familiarity with J, E, etc, you might get lost. There are references in the book to other authors, their comments and their works. It seems this was originally published as part of a larger work and in refutation of other scholarly commentary that was going on at the time. If you don't mind that it reads like a textbook and that it references other works without quoting them, there is much to be found here.Lastly, I am an unbeliever with an academic interest in the Bible and religion. If you're a believer, this book may reveal more than you're comfortable knowing.

Michael Halliday is doomed to hallucinations, psychosis and death within a year. Jared Felker conceives a project to give purpose to his friend's last days. As the project advances, Michael confronts questions basic to the human condition with a mind melting in a morass of misshapen proteins. What is human consciousness? A soul? Are they linked? David Hawke, the friend funding the project, fights for a merger to secure his company's future. Into this mix comes an iconoclast from California who is key to the project's final step and the merger. Jared's growing unease crystallizes when he discovers an audio diary Michael has left behind. Advancing the project by day and listening to Michael's voice at night, he must choose between a place in history for himself and a place in eternity for his friend.

Conscious Choices is a story of love and loss, loyalty and betrayal, hope and fear.

By Amazon Customer I found this to be a gripping, compelling, thought-provoking, beautifully-written work. The author has an extraordinary ability and finesse in showing the story, and every chapter left me wanting more. The story moved swiftly over a tight timeline, building to the denouement, and I closed the book wanting more from this master storyteller. The technical passages have clearly been thoroughly researched, and while the information is illuminating, it doesn't overpower the reader who has limited knowledge of computer science. In the hands of a lesser-skilled author, the story might have languished in deep philosophical, murky waters, but Eidson has put together a dynamic story, laced with intrigue, business, morality, science, and a touch of Stephen King. Definitely a 5-star read...5 golden stars!

I wish I could read them all, but there just isn't enough time. For me to take on a new full-length novel, it has to be very appealing, especially if it's by a first-time author with no prior track record. But the premise of Conscious Choices was so intriguing that I was hooked, and the book did not disappoint. In the story, Michael Halliday, the head of a technology research company, has just learned that he has a rare brain disorder called Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease and that he has only a few months to live. As the finality of his situation sank in, Halliday, who had no wife or children, wondered about his legacy. Had his brief time on Earth made a difference? Had his life meant anything? Grieving for his best friend's plight, co-worker Jared Felker was determined to answer those questions for Michael. His plan: capture Michael's essence in an artificial intelligence (AI) program on the lab's supercomputer. It meant replicating his consciousness in a program that would be capable of creative thoughts. When Michael agreed, the race was on to complete the project before his mind became too cloudy to continue. It was a monumental task for the lab to develop the cutting edge neural network hardware and software that would allow Michael's consciousness to dwell in a machine, but after a few months, the results were so promising that the question arose: were they capturing more than just Michael's consciousness? And if so, should such a machine even be built? It's an exciting story that races to a suspenseful climax as it deals with ethical as well as technical issues that may have to be considered in the future as AI technology advances.Books by first-time authors can be notoriously poorly written with little or no sign of an editor's touch, but Conscious Choices is a remarkably well written book by a talented author. Characters were well-drawn flesh-and-blood people, and their dialogues were realistic. The story engaged me from the start and held my attention to the last sentence, which by the way was a shocker (and that's all I'll say about that).A review copy of the book was provided by the author.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A debut novel you won't want to miss By Doris Reidy Randy Eidson’s debut novel is rich in philosophy about what it means to be human and what might happen if that meaning is shared with a machine. When the director of an artificial intelligence lab learns he has a progressive, fatal disease, he decides to bid for immortality by transmitting everything he knows, thinks and feels into a super-computer called Gemini. A simple wish to leave behind the accumulated wisdom of a lifetime becomes something more when human brain structure in replicated in Gemini. What happens next...that’s what keeps you turning the pages. The characters are fully realized and believable; the pacing is tight, the plot intricate and the ending surprising. Eidson leaves a loose thread that he could unravel for a sequel. We can only hope so.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. 2.5 "Save Baby" Stars By Aila Jiang Was that really the finale? Because I had to reread the last couple of pages to make sure it had an ending. In The End follows the story of In the After, where people basically turn into zombies (called Them in the beginning, but later they’re revealed to be florae). Amy has escaped New Hope without Baby, who is being experimented on by the super evil maniac villain Dr. Reynolds, since she has survived the bite of a florae but had not been transformed into one. (See? They’re pretty much zombies.) Amy somehow thinks that going to Ken, another researcher who’s trying to find a cure, will save Baby so he can take tests of her instead of Dr. Reynolds. But that’s her best shot, so she heads into Fort Black and starts her search. What I liked:- Fort Black is for criminals. It’s a prison, which is pretty awesome when you add it to the backdrop of an apocalyptic world. The more gruesome the setting, the better. This one was not as bloodthirsty as I expected, but this place was a nice addition.- Brenna was bad ass as hell. With a shaved head and spinal tattoo, this woman made me reconsider my heterosexuality. It helps that she’s also pretty important to the plot regarding vaccines for the Florae. This is my favorite character and the one that kept me going throughout the book.“‘I’m one in a million?’ Brenna says with a smirk. ‘I always knew I was awesome.'”Yes, you are amazing, Brenna.- Amy’s loyalty to Baby.Man I honestly don’t understand it; I would give up some 6 year old to save humanity in a heartbeat if that’s what it took. Anyway, Amy does well in what we’re taught in elementary school and says “No!” to peer (¿?) pressure and doesn’t give up in trying to save her precious, one-and-only Baby. Good for you, main character. What I didn’t like:- Amy being dumb at Fort Black.Basically Fort Black is a “men own women” kind of world where women are claimed. Yeah I get that Amy doesn’t want to be owned by someone but girl if you’re trying survive, you play by the rules. Why the hell would you openly disagree with the guy who’s trying to help you in front of a bunch of bloodthirsty criminals?? Why does this guy even put up with you.- Amy being dumb at Fort Black part 2.Yo man if you’re tryna get rid of someone, do it right. (Especially if the guy excels at killing young girls.) Meet Tank, whom the reader is constantly told likes to kill innocent young girls and is always trying to get at Amy. Obviously you’d try to get rid of him asap right? Amy has other plans though, and every time he comes back and she does something it always ends with him COMING BACK.“I freeze in panicked shock. ‘You-you’re dead,’ I say, disbelieving.‘Not just yet, cupcake,’ Tank growls, lurching toward me.”(Probably the fifth time of “Hey, Tanks is gone,” and “Tanks is here?!”)- What is this love triangle? It doesn’t even get resolved. Honestly I cared nothing for either of the love interests. More importantly, Amy didn’t think it was worth her time to tell the rejected guy about her feelings and who she chose. It was kinda funny though, reading that when he looked at her she chose to IGNORE him instead of talk about it.“‘All right, Amy,” Jacks says. “Thanks. I… I can’t wait to see you.’There’s a silence in the room. Rice gives me another look, and I feel my face go hot… We click off. I still ignore Rice’s questioning gaze.”Talk about a killer rejection.- Open-ended ending. They always seem so dissatisfying to me, but this one was like “yeah I don’t wanna write more so here ya go.” Also, everything was very very forced and rushed. The brainwashing of Baby really lasted for a couple of chapters or so. If you’re going to add some neat plot device like make it work man. It was kinda wasted in that situation.- Cliché villain that reveals his diabolical plans in the last 50 pages or so like man give me a break this is a book about the zombie apocalypse and this is the best excuse you could give? Go home.Recommended for:People who read the first one, liked it, and have some free time on their hands. If you haven’t read In the After then go read that and see what you think before taking this one up. (Trust me, you wouldn’t understand much if you jump in.)Rating: 2.5/5

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not the greatest ending, but overall a good series By Jennifer Miller Summary:Amy has escaped New Hope, but in the process she left Baby behind. As the guilt of doing so begins to weigh on her, she gets a message that Dr. Reynolds has Baby, knows what Baby is, and is experimenting on her. In order to save Baby, Amy has to go to Fort Black to attempt to have Kay's brother request Baby for experimentation. Once this transfer is made, Baby will be relatively safe. Fort Black just isn't the same as New Hope, and Amy's trek seems to be more difficult than it seemed. My thoughts:This book was a little disappointing. I felt like there was a good amount of repetition because the majoring of the book is Amy looking for the head researcher. I would have rather had some of that cut down to build more information on the science of the cure. That is really the hopeful part of the novel. Also, there is so much about contrasting Fort Black to New Hope. I understand that Fort Black is basically the opposite of New Hope, but I wanted to feel like it was developed on its own without needing to point out some of those very obvious distinctions. Finally, I always remind my students that stories much have a beginning, middle, and an end. In most cases, they should be rather balanced in terms of development. In this book, the middle takes over just about everything. The beginning is rushed and the ending is rushed. The end should have been better. It was too easy, which made everything from the middle just seem silly and a waste of time.Okay, so that's what I didn't care for. I did like that I felt everything come together. I felt like there was hope for the civilization that I was leaving. Some of the new characters were very interesting. They were really the light in Fort Black. Even though there were fairly strict rules on behavior, they often brought some wit and sassy attitudes. While there is a bit of a romance here, the relationship between Amy and Baby is still the number one focus. This is refreshing in a YA novel, because I'm a little tired of the female heroines falling instantly in love with someone and then doing stupid things.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ... a trilogy) and although the development of it was good although a bit slow By Adriana C In the End is the second and final book of this duology (I thought it was a trilogy) and although the development of it was good although a bit slow, I feel that the ending was open ended and with some loose ends.Amy escaped New Hope with Kay's help and was left near another settlement of known survivors - Fort Black, but Amy didn't go there to seek refuge, so she has lived the past few months alone, that is until Kay communicates with her and gives her the news that Baby has been captured by Dr. Reynolds and her life is in danger; so she has to go to Fort Black and request the help of Kay's brother - Ken, whom is a scientist and could help her get Baby. Once in Fort Black she discovers that this used to be a prison and many of its residents were prisoners there and life is not easy there, much less a girl without protection.I liked the character of Amy in the previous book, because she was cautious, intelligent and stealthy something necessary to live in a post-apocalyptic world, but in this book she was too reckless, impetuous and she exposed herself to great danger in her eagerness to get as soon as possible with Baby (her adopted sister), meanwhile the post-apocalyptic world brings out the worst in people, imagine arriving to live to Fort Black which used to be a prison, where there aren't many rules and most residents are male. There she meets Jacks a nice guy, her offers to help her and saves her more than once.Overall, the plot was okay, the main character drove me mad for all the dangerous situations to which she exposed herself, but the plot has plenty of action, some suspense, intrigue and had me doubting the intentions of some of the characters, there is some romance, but I felt a bit slow at times. It has an open ending that was somewhat abrupt.

Under the surface lurks Luse, a sharp street child combing the gang-ridden city in a desperate search for Doctor Georgia Shapiro who can offer her a way back into her once-bright past. The Doctor is trying to unravel the mystery of her friend’s sudden death while mourning the new gap in her life and the AIDS crisis laying waste to the country around her. Meanwhile the Blood Of Christ Church and its enigmatic leader Priestess Selena Clark gain traction in the community with their murky promises of salvation and violent clandestine rituals. A small silver box links the three in ways they cannot imagine and will force the women to question who they trust, who they are and for who they fight. Witch Girl is a pacy crime thriller that juggles the past and the present effortlessly and whose magic holds the reader hostage until the final page. In a Zambia that is experiencing the disintegration of family units as HIV/AIDS takes hold, the Blood of Christ Church makes its mark by distributing a film entitled Witch Children, a film about child demonization, where children feed off their parents. Eleven year old Luse’s father and mother are both HIV-positive activists, living healthy, happy lives. But once the family becomes involved with the Blood of Christ church, everything changes. How is it that Luse and her little brother Joshua have ended up living in a storm drain in Lusaka, searching for someone named George Shapi? How did they come to have a special box from Harry the Rasta that holds answers about what happened to the missing Danish filmmakers who were investigating the highly secretive and heavily guarded Blood of Christ Street Child Rehabilitation Centre? Through a unique blend of issues such as witchcraft, AIDS activism, religious extremism, Tanvi Bush weaves together a thrilling narrative with vivid descriptions and unforgettable characters.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Amazing Book Gripping Sad and Thrilling By Amazon Customer This book drew me in from the first page and kept me on the edge of my seat. It painted a rich picture of the lives of of Luce and her brother in Zambia from their lives in the suburbs to poverty and the harsh reality of the street. It takes the reader on an amazing ride touching on religious fanaticism, child smuggling and even magic. The plight of these children made me want to reach through the pages and comfort them. Although fiction and not a memoir it reminded me of Angela's Ashes and has to be one of the best books I've read in years.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the suspense drove me on like a witch flying her broomstick By Franklin Shapiro As I navigated my way into the second half of the story, the suspense drove me on like a witch flying her broomstick, and I just couldn’t put the book down. This is a beautifully crafted tale, embedded in intrigue and mystery. It also carries an agenda: it exposes a plot of the modern day evil of the sale of body parts through the exploitation of complex third world conditions. The author, whose original home was Zambia evokes the magical ambience of this part of Southern Africa. The story builds up gradually as the young heroic Luse relates how she and her brother Joshua were kidnapped by an evil gang of Zambian officials and Chinese accomplices led by a charismatic evil priestess. Brainwashed by the priestess' apocalyptic Christianity hundreds of orphaned children are swept up from the streets and end up in a secret medical compound where ghastly operations to remove body organs are performed. The wicked band of wrongdoers are rooted in a mishmash of radical Christianity and African myth. This is the backdrop to the evil happenings. By sheer determination and intuitive knowledge Luse escapes and finds her way to the good and ethical Dr Georgia Shapiro and her friends, who are determined to fight the evil and bring the wrongdoers to justice.Tanvi Bush has created a delightful work, rich in description and atmosphere. I warmly recommend anyone seeking to indulge in an exciting mystery and simultaneously journey through magical Zambia to take up this page-turner.Frank Shapiro (author of ‘Eve and Mary’)http://fshapiro.com/
