What could cause Bob to give up his job at the Los Angeles pathology lab that demands so little of him, where he can play Tetris and web surf whenever he wants? What could lead him to walk out on his beautiful girlfriend, who makes her living as a masturbation coach? What could make him risk everything and ultimately transform him into Roberto, a kingpin in the Los Angeles Mexican mafia?

An erotic tattoo. But not just any naughty skin ink, the Mona Lisa of erotic tattoos, painted on a severed arm, which lands on Bob's desk one morning. Bob may have fallen for the woman in the tattoo, but he's not the only one who wants the arm. There's the telenovela-addicted mobster who lost it, the jefe who needs to keep it out of the clutches of the police, a backstabbing cannabis aficionado/Wharton MBA, and a wine snob LAPD detective who knows that the arm is the evidence he needs to bring down the entire Mexican mafia.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wow By M. Hill This novel is a non-stop, never-put-down, read-it-in-one-sitting kind of book. It reads like a film, except you can dive into the characters' heads and come out the other side. There are graphic depictions of death and sex, and there is 'vulgar' language, but to omit such aspects of the world of this novel, that of the Mexican Mafia, would to do an injustice to the world of the novel. Well written and well done.

Moisten Your Lips, Your About to Read and Discover a Real Challenger to Hiaasen and Fitzhugh By James N Simpson Days ago I came across Haskell Smith's second novel Delicious and discovered a new contender to rival Carl Hiaasen or Bill Fitzhugh for the status of best surreal eccentric character filled humorous fiction author. His debut novel Moist, is even better than that one!Moist takes the reader into streets of LA following the exploits of violent Mexican mafia members, starting off with one who severed his arm with an automatic garage door as he was trying to make his victim's body look like a suicide. It's mistakes like this that can bring an organisation down and this one full of eccentric characters, each hungry to run the organisation themselves. They need to prevent the arm's owner's identity becoming known to the police. A young pathology lab courier is fascinated by the tats on the arm, particularly one of a woman pleasuring a man. Bob's own girlfriend has just told him she can't stand the sight of his own Mr Happy, so he fantasises that the woman on the arm is real. When he is knocked out and thrown into the boot (trunk) of his courier car, Bob is set to become another body in the desert. However power struggles within the Mexican mafia will give him a chance at not only survival but to meet the woman who inspired the tattoo and transform from his slacker life as Bob into Roberto! Throw in a self pleasuring coach (Bob's girlfriend) and a detective who prefers the upmarket social things such as good wine to beer and doughnuts and you've got the funniest mafia adventure ever written.

My plan was to read a bit for a couple hours each night. Wednesday I started reading while my wife watched American Idol. I decide to stop at chapter ten because I figured it was a good stopping point and because it was midnight. The next day I finished the rest of it. It was never boring, never predictable. It was always interesting, always funny. It reminded me a bit of an Elmore Leonard story how there were so many well-written characters, and the darkly comic situations, in which they were involved.I have never laughed so much while reading a book. This novel was a non-stop joy to read. This was my first experience with one of Mark Haskell Smith's novels and now I plan on reading them all.Pick up this book. You won't be disappointed. This guy can write.

Just what do you do to begin reading Searching guide that you love to read very first or locate a fascinating e-book that will make you want to review? Everyone has distinction with their reason of reviewing a publication Actuary, reading practice should be from earlier. Lots of people could be love to check out, however not a book. It's not fault. A person will be bored to open the thick publication with small words to read. In even more, this is the real problem. So do occur probably with this

I started writing poems in college about six years ago aging back to 2009. Actually, I was going through a lot of pressure of keeping up with a heavy course load at university. Then, I found this outlet of un-prevailing oneself; on paper. I wrote, and wrote; just to destress my mind. Amazingly after every single writing I felt relieved from external pressures and happy with my inner ability to express and share experiences from ink to paper. Encountering both good and bad from day-to-day I turned my talent into a hobby. At this point, I would like to know what type of poetry most relates to as mass audience. Near the future, as my work improves I would like to publish 2nd collection book of poetry as short-term goal. Really, I’m being ambitious but for now I am pleased to just let my work speak for itself and hear your reaction and feedback.

Very ambitious auto-biography. Just take the Sunday to read these beautiful words and you will take away how softness of words can affect emotions in times world chaos and how Karem’s inner-peace is transferred from thoughts-to-hand-to-ink thus, conveyed in poetry.

Sound, throb, and a long low wail of pure, hard pain...Nine Inch Nails.

The world's most disturbing rock band is in effect one man singer and songwriter Trent Reznor. Since stealing the show during the original Lollapalooza tour in 1991, NIN has limned the hard edge of the techno revolution. In Reznor's desperate, combative persona and disarrayed melodies the musical community has finally found a band that appalls, confounds, and undeniably attracts. Horrified yet entranced, NIN's fans are like moths drawn toward the disfiguring flame of their music.

From a well of previously unpublished research, Huxley has carved out the history of this improbable hero: Reznor's rise as an Appalachian outcast to dyspeptic sex symbol; his connections to Courtney Love; and his relationship with his spasmodically fixated fans. Ricocheting wildly between goth rock and industrial grunge, Nine Inch Nails has achieved a legendary sound. Here, Martin Huxley digs hard and deep to unearth the truth beneath the ultimate noise.

Nine Inch Nails, by Martin Huxley

From Booklist Those who hunger for throbbing bombast in all aspects of contemporary life will flock to this not incredibly revealing portrait of the man, the myth, the arrested adolescent behind the band Nine Inch Nails--Trent Reznor. Reznor is Nine Inch Nails and vice versa, just as the Mothers of Invention were Frank Zappa and whomever he showed up with on a given night. Not exactly darlings of critics (or parents), Nine Inch Nails is probably the most successful industrial music act extant. Huxley gives Reznor's life and attitude (which is everything, you know) full airing in this by-the-numbers bio. Much of the narrative is taken up with Reznor's well-cultivated inability to "fit into anything." Ah, angst--what would rock 'n' roll be without it? Replete with quotations from Thrasher magazine and other chronicles of the present and recent cutting edge, this little book is sure to thrill Reznor's legion of fans. Mike Tribby

Good summary of NIN By A Customer I've always been a pretty big fan of Nine Inch Nails, as Trent Reznor is one of the few people with an actual musical vision or views worth listening to. While the book skips most of Reznor's adolescent life and teen-years, unlike the later released "The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell" by label-mate and fellow shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, the book does a better job of telling Trent's story of how he evolved into the music industry and how his life turned into using the studio itself as an instrument. While Manson's autobiography was pleasing in it's disturbing details of the lead singers troubled youth, "Nine Inch Nails" is better off leaving such details out, as Trent has always really wanted things to be about the music and not a bunch of out-played "my parents hate me, I was abused" drivel that would probably be in any book written by a member of KoRn or similar bands.Instead Martin Huxley decides to focus more on Trent's musical career prior to Nine Inch Nails, with the various successes and failures which filled his life in the musical world, also discussing the making of all the albums up to "The Downward Spiral", the stress of touring and writing an album, and Trent's fallout with one-time bandmate Richard Patrick of Filter.Piecing together pieces of articles and interviews, along with his own views on Nine Inch Nails' honest and disturbing message, Martin Huxley does a good job of compiling some of the best information on one of the best industrial artists in history (even though Trent prefers not to be called "industrial"). After all, genres can be real limitations. Pick this up whether you're a hardcore fan of NIN or not. Either way it's well-written and interesting and you'll learn something about the band that you didn't know before.

By Mandi Richmond (drmandi@hotmail.com) I'm a huge fan and have all the major albums plus a few and thought I knew alot about Nine Inch Nails. Then I read "Self Destruct" and i realized I didn't know half of what there was. The info I gained from reading the book made me appreciate Trent Reznor and his music even more. The book is also great for people who have not yet been introduced to the band and want to learn more. It's great reading- fast paced and even funny in some parts.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Definitely Buy This Book................... By A Customer This is a definite buy for any NIN fan. After reading this book, you will definitely have a new outlook on Trent and NIN. Although I try not to believe everything I read or hear unless it comes from Trent's mouth. Everything in this book sounds true to the best of my knowledge, and believe me I've done my homework. Trent is a very non-public person, you will appreciate learning more information about him, his background, the way he thinks, his music and the coming together of Nine Inch Nails. You will be impressed by this book.........go buy it! Trent...your in *A Warm Place* in my heart!

An emblematic figure of the early 20th century, Paul Klee participated in the expansive Avant-Garde movements in Germany and Switzerland. From the vibrant Blaue Reiter movement to Surrealism at the end of the 1930s and throughout his teaching years at the Bauhaus, he attempted to capture the organic and harmonic nature of painting by alluding to other artistic mediums such as poetry, literature, and, above all, music. While he collaborated with artists like August Macke and Alexej von Jawlensky, his most famous partnership was with the abstract expressionist, Wassily Kandinsky.

I only missed a few of his significant pieces in it, like Castle and Sun or The Red Balloon. Other than that a fantastic book to have, highest quality prints.

I note another reviewer's worry about a few missing pieces, but Klee produced so many paintings that this is inevitable in any text. I make up for this by buying several books on Klee (I have 6). One of the real strengths of this book is the detailed information on each reproduction. The author lists the dimensions, media and methods (gluing paper onto board, cloth on to board, etc). The addition of Klee's writing greatly informs what we are looking at. The color reproductions are excellent and the size format of the book works very well, particularly given the small size of many of Klee's originals.A very fine purchase that will give pleasure for years.

You are a Traveler is a song and a poem, a gift to share with someone you love, and a blessing for a joyous and passionate life.  These are the words we all long to share with a loved one, in rhythms that can be read again and again.  To give, share and love.

Our story begins with a traveler and a musician...

You are a Traveler and I'm a Musician.

You are Magic and I'm a Magician.

You were born to run, learn and play.

I give you songs to brighten your day.

You choose the path and I'll bring the beat.

I am the bicycle, you are the feet.

We travel from forest to sea, and revel in our appreciation of each new day.  Read it aloud to someone you love, and listen to your heart.

You are the radiance of a star-studded night.

You are the wind.  I am the kite.

Stardust and Fire: Tales of a Hopeful Romantic, by Tracy A. Seiden

About the Author I grew up an only child in the suburbs of the Midwest wandering through the woods letting my imagination build a fantasy world of grand adventures.  I was an avid reader, often finding myself lost in the pages of some book, strolling through the halls of the author's imagination, wondering if I could write that way someday.I grew up reading poetry and always had a fondness of the outdoors, romance, and a wonder of finding a deeper connection between people.  In high school, English was my favorite subject. The years advanced and I found myself in a career, having fallen away from my reading and the thought of writing until I began soul searching, once again happening upon my love of words, of weaving an escape, a world in which I could write a romantic thought or story about how nature moved me.  So it is that this collection of words finds its way to you.  It has been a dream of mine to write and I am grateful for this chance to share it with you.

A heavenly collection By Amazon Customer Tracy Seiden's first book Stardust and Fire is a glorious cornucopia of poetry which will enchant and delight. Tracy has a certain esoteric expertise that just weaves the most beautiful stories, making use of both childhood and old-age themes and ideas. Also many of the pieces serve as analogies of important life events. This book is kinetic from start to finish, breathing new life into the reader. It would make a wonderful gift for a friend or a loved one. I am most delighted to add it to my poetry collection and strongly recommend that you do too.

Now a custodian at the Van Allen School of Mortuary Science, he is enjoying himself immensely.   His niece, Judy, wants to know why. She is the only one ready to unveil this man, and to challenge him on his own terms. Rich in humor and with an acute sense of the absurdities of everyday life, Apology for Big Rod is an American success story of an altogether different sort.

Apology for Big Rod, by Charles Holdefer

From Kirkus Reviews A whimsical first novel celebrates its reprobate hero's eccentricities as he drifts from job to job, ducks parental responsibilities, and even steals from the dead. Judy Gass decided she adored her uncle on the day he dug up her father's lawn in order to present her with a supposedly bona fide dinosaur bone--and she continued to love him for the same mix of charm and destructiveness until the day he died. Using this postmortem ``apology'' to recount and account for his many misdeeds, the adult Judy recalls how carefree Uncle Rod always seemed compared to her own plodding, hard-working dad. A shy, lonely child, Roderick Gass was profoundly affected by his near- death experience as a soldier during WW II--an experience that convinced him life was too short to spend time punching the clock at a dead-end job. Instead, as his relatives shake their heads over his lost potential (he could have been a great sports announcer!), Rod returns to Seymour, Illinois, to drift cheerfully from one temporary career to another--reinventing himself as a bantamweight boxer, a Fuller Brush salesman, a purveyor of color TV converters, and finally a part-time janitor at the Van Allen School of Mortuary Science--carrying on a series of love affairs, gambling schemes, and shadier business deals on the side. As Rod and his brother age, it appears for a while that Rod may come out the winner, retaining his youthful zest long after Judy's dad resigns himself to a life of boredom--but Rod's house of cards finally collapses when he's caught red-handed stealing a necklace off a corpse at the mortuary. Revealed as a thief, an absentee dad (from a failed alliance in Florida), and an unapologetic fraud, Uncle Rod dies in prison, with only his niece Judy to sing his praises. Charming but slight, like its hero. Still, Holdefer's blithe humor hints at more substantial entertainment to come. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

The story is entertaining and full of surprises, especially Big Rod's sale of chocolate Jesuses!!! It is also a little strange (and the only book I've seen like that) when it seems to talk about (mainly joke about) post-structuralism & feminism but in non-academic way. Like it claims on the back cover the language is colloquial. What makes me hold back the 5th review star is that the author seems to make fun of all sides without taking one on his own, to have his cake and eat it too. If it is ONLY an an apology for "Big Rod" that is sort of offensive. If the book had been longer maybe this would have been clearer. Still it is a fun book.

Anderson I purchased this book because I am taking a course on "Finishing Your Novel" at the Iowa Summer Writers Festival and Charles Holdefer will be the course's instructor. My purpose for reading this book was admittedly egocentric...I wanted to see whether I would feel this man was qualified to teach this class. Well, let me assure you that he is and I have been sufficiently humbled. Holdefer's wit and the obvious care he's taken in constructing his characters will burn this novel into the reader's minds long after the final page has been turned.

Oswald (jhawks@netins.net) I purchased for our library and read this book when Charles e-mailed my library and let us know that he was an Iowan and would we be interested in a book by an Iowa author. I enjoyed the book so much that I borrowed through inter-library loan his college disertation (a short novel). I am still waiting for his next novel which will hopefully have some of the characters from the disertation. I corresponded with Charles a couple times through e-mail. He didn't say when his next novel would be out. So we must wait.

They sound inspired and i think that what I've gained from reading them is a better understanding of myself and how I fit in with the world around me, and a comfort of knowing someone else thinks a lot of the same things that i do, and a reminder to live with my heart. Because the world can really easily distract us from seeing the love and truths all around us in our lives sometimes, and living for whats really important.

Jam: A Novel, by Alan Goldsher

From Publishers Weekly Goldsher makes his debut with a musical buddy novel that traces the path of a Chicago drummer named Frank Craft, who forms a successful group with his childhood best friend, a talented multi-instrumentalist named James Justus. The two friends start out as a bebop duo before expanding into a quartet that takes off in the mid-1990s when Justus comes up with the idea of jazzing up some mainstream rock songs, a concept that makes them instantly attractive to Chicago club owners. From there they draw the attention of a sleazy major-label rep who recognizes Justus's star power and imports a couple of egotistical horn players to help recreate the band as a jazz-tinged pop outfit. Their first album includes an instant hit that puts them on the video playlist, and soon Craft and Justice find themselves living the high life when they go on tour. But the band quickly disintegrates in a clash of egos when the horn players sabotage the drummer, and Justus, rechristened "Jam" by the label to match the band's new moniker, becomes infatuated with his newfound stardom. Goldsher is an engaging if somewhat mawkish storyteller who knows the music business and the details of life as a jazz musician, and he creates a lively and interesting band of characters. But his central premise that a jazz band could travel the kind of rock 'n' roll rags-to-riches road he creates is problematic at best, and his tendency to fall into genre clich s while overexplaining some of the musical scenes is compounded by a self-absorbed, unlikable narrator. Overall, however, Goldsher manages to overcome these flaws with sheer storytelling skill, and his book should satisfy jazz fans looking for a feel-good musical fairy tale. (Jan.) FYI: Goldsher is a respected bassist who's recorded with artists like Janet Jackson and Naughty by Nature. Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The initial reviewer has written...dug... into the various 'opuses' contained in this novel. The genre - jazz-novel's oputput is very slim...maybe taking up only one shelf in a library. So, Alan Goldsher's contribution matters. The only comment I might add is that for this reader, I could not conjure-up a real-life instance of an actual 'jazzer' exploding into 'mega pop star' status. But, I wasn't around when 'Satchmo' Armstrong did his thing.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An engaging read for anyone who has ever chased something big By Schmitty Alan Goldsher is becoming one of my favorite authors. I discovered his second novel, The Record Haus: A Novel, in a Chicago store some years earlier. I thoroughly enjoyed it, passed it along to a friend, and have since re-purchased the book. Jam (his first) sounded equally worthy, and I'm happy to report that after finally getting a copy, I'm quite satisfied. The book chronicles the rise and fall of a Chicago-area jazz band (Jam) through the eyes of drummer Franklin Craft. Goldsher starts in medias res, giving a gripping preview of things to come before downshifting into Frank's childhood in a northern suburb of Chicago and his potentially life-altering meeting with James Justus, a multi-instrumentalist prodigy of sorts whose friendship with Craft holds strong for several years.Written in ten distinct chapters of roughly equal length, the book has a fairly standard three-act feel about it. Much of the early action hones in on the friendship between Frank and James as they explore jazz, hone their craft, navigate high school, and eventually start gigging. Goldsher follows up with an account of the duo's glory days at Chicago's No Exit, followed by the addition of new members, new gigs, a record deal, and touring.Based on what I've read in his canon, Goldsher's strength is relationship. He is adept with his characters and their emotions as they navigate life's challenges. His early work is often bittersweet, featuring metaphorical closed doors and new beginnings. Jam was no exception in this regard, and the culmination of the novel definitely leaves an impression, giving the reader a lot to contemplate. As a person contemplating his own artistic journey, this book hit close to home for me in a lot of ways.Admittedly, some parts were a little more riveting than others. The story is excellent, but the flow fell a tad shy of an instant page-turner for me. Nevertheless, the book itself is structured in tight segments, and there was always a juicy detail on the horizon. While some moments felt a bit forced in the name of regimented plot development, there was a lot of honesty, a lot of excitement, some angst, some heartbreak, and some great laughs. It was a very engaging read.I'm giving Jam five stars. Though my natural inclination is four, I can be a harsh grader. I definitely would recommend this book to friends and fellow readers, especially those who know what it means to chase a dream or artistic pursuit.

Ring Fenced, by Zach Abrams

About the Author Having the background of a successful career in commerce and finance, Zach Abrams has spent many years writing reports, letters and presentations and it's only fairly recently he started writing novels. "It's a more honourable type of fiction," he declares. His first novel 'Ring Fenced' was published in November 2011. This is a crime story with a difference, following one man's obsession with power and control. After this he collaborated with Elly Grant to produce 'Twists and Turns' a book of short stories. Zach's next novel, 'Made a Killing', is the first book in the Alex Warren series. It follows the investigation after the killing of a much hated criminal where an elephant tusk was used as the murder weapon was. This has been followed by 'A Measure of Trouble' where Alex's team are seeking the murderer of a CEO killed within the cask room of his whisky distillery. The third was published on 31 March 2015, 'Written to Death,' deals with a mysterious death during a writers' group meeting. - These are fast moving, gripping novels set in the tough crime-ridden streets of Glasgow. Zach's quirky thriller, 'Source; Greed, Power, Revenge, or is it Economic Terrorism' has three investigative journalists travelling across the UK, Spain and France as they research corruption and sabotage in the banking sector while trying to cope with their own fraught personal lives. Alike his central character in 'Ring Fenced,' (Bemjamin Short), Zach Abrams completed his education in Scotland and went on to a career in accountancy, business and finance. He is married with two children. He plays no instruments but has an eclectic taste in music, although not as obsessive as Benjamin. Unlike Benjamin, he does not maintain mistresses, write pornography and (sadly) he does not have ownership of such a company. He is not a sociopath (at least by his own reckoning) and all versions of his life are aware of and freely communicate with each other. More in keeping with 'Alex Warren', Zach was raised in Glasgow and has spent many years working in Central Scotland. To contact the author mailto:zachabrams@authorway.net

Characters Come Alive By Taylor O Zack will have you dancing on a string as he takes you on a journey of the character Bennie or is Benjie or maybe Ben and so on. Well to know for sure read it.I hope you feel the same as I did when he introduced mother. I'm not Jewish, but I think I knew her. I could not help identifying her with the mothers of friends I knew growing up.If you like books with real character feel and a fast paced book this is a don't miss read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great, fast paced read by a new author! By Book Reviewer Zach has a remarkable skill in bringing characters to life in a fast paced narrative. The author uses the metaphor of a ringed fence to take us through the travails of Benjamin, a Jewish investment banker.Five stars for a fresh attempt by a new author.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars for a First Novel By Amazon Customer Zach Abrams shows promise and talent with this first novel. It's complex, tense, and engaging. The five personas of Benjamin are so different, yet they are portrayed in a way that the reader can see how they all can exist within one person. As the "holes in the fences" start appearing in Benjamin's five personas, the tale becomes gripping. In the self-publishing world (and even in the established publishing world for that matter) there is so much crap out there, worthy of two stars or less. So it's great to see a refreshing and honest talent emerge from that mire - worth five stars.

Excerpt from Native Daughter: The Story of Anita WhitneyThe little girl, she could not have been more than seven, was wide-eyed at the vibrant brilliance which filled the vast rotunda of the Capitol Building. The gas jet flames, the source of all this illumination, sparkled through the varicolored crystals of great chandeliers which descended from the tall ceiling that soared upward and upward in a majestic curve to form the Capirol dome. The crowd that moved through this spacious chamber was as brilliant as the light. How beautiful were the ladies, their rich satins reflecting the glow of the lights! How imposing the gentlemen, stiff in their formal frock coats, elegant in their white gloves! The little girl was awed not only by the physical splendor of the scene, but by the vague knowledge that these handsome ladies and gentlemen were America's great, its statesmen and soldiers, lawmakers and jurists. She clutched more tightly at the hand of her aunt who swept through the crowd with aristocratic ease. At times she glanced at her uncle, Justice Field, bowing stiffly in recognition of respectful greetings on all sides.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Political Journey of Anita Whitney: California Social Worker, Suffragist, Socialist, and Communist Party Leader By Michael J Helquist Charlotte Anita Whitney, known as Anita to her colleagues and friends, was an exceptional activist for social and economic justice during the early decades of the 20th Century. She came from a patrician background – an uncle was a U.S. Supreme Court justice – and she graduated from Wellesley College before returning to her home state of California. Whitney undertook a restless journey seeking an authentic and effective means to counter the injustice she found in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She travelled from reformist Progressive Era politics to radical labor pursuits. She later became a principal organizer for the Communist Party USA. Whitney may be best known as the plaintiff in Whitney v. California¸ a case before the US Supreme Court in which Justice Louis Brandeis held that a “clear and present danger” was required before a legislative act could restrict the right to free speech.Al Richmond, the author of this work, was a long-time labor activist and a principal writer for The Daily People’s World, the most progressive newspaper on the West Coast. His biography of Whitney was his first published book. He undertook Native Daughter as a tribute to Whitney (1867-1955) in 1942 for her 75th birthday and as a gift to her friends, colleagues, and admirers. It is a narrative biography, not an historical or academic work, but it is nevertheless an impressively written account of a woman not as well know as she should be. Richmond’s work is the only full biography of Anita Whitney, and he based much of his narrative on personal interviews with her.The strength of Native Daughter is the author’s own experience with Socialist and radical politics during the time that Anita Whitney was actively involved. He understood the issues, the internal conflicts between factions, the demands on leaders, and the national environment that made protest so perilous. His account of Whitney’s trial for criminal syndicalism – on charges of belonging to the Communist Party – is especially interesting and historically valuable. When she was convicted, Whitney was fully prepared to do time in San Quentin State Prison. She resisted executive clemency or a pardon because she thought it would be granted in deference to her social status. This is an intriguing story and an important contribution to an understanding of women’s role in political change, radical history, woman suffrage, the IWW and Communist Party USA, and the risks of political activism.Michael Helquist, MARIE EQUI: Radical Politics and Outlaw Passions

The Christian Ministry, by Charles Bridges

About the Author Charles Bridges (1794-1869) was one of the leaders of the Evangelical party in the Church of England in the nineteenth century. He was the vicar of Old Newton, Suffolk, from 1823 to 1849, and later of Weymouth and Hinton Martell in Dorset.Educated at Queen's College, Cambridge, Bridges was ordained in 1817. As a preacher he was called upon for such important occasions as the Clerical Conference at Weston-super-Mare in 1858 (when he preached along with J. C. Ryle) and the consecration of the Bishop of Carlisle in York Minster in l860.Renowned though he was in his own day for his pulpit ministry, his subsequent fame rests in the books which came from his pen An Exposition of Psalm CXIX (1827), Forty-eight Scriptural Studies (5th ed. 1833), Fifty-four Scriptural Studies (1837), An Exposition of the Book of Proverbs (1846), a Manual for the Young (1849), and An Exposition of the Book of Ecclesiastes (1860). His The Christian Ministry went through nine editions within 20 years of its appearance in 1829 and has probably remained unequalled in its field. These works earned high commendation from many, including C. H. Spurgeon, who described all Bridge s writings as 'very suggestive to ministers.'After his death a small selection of his correspondence was published in book form in 1870 and it reveals a man of deep Christian piety. 'I never remember anyone,' says the writer of the Foreword to The Christian Ministry, 'in whose presence it was more difficult to be irreligious, or even frivolous.'

A Powerful book for Pastors and Preachers By Brian G Hedges The Christian Ministry by Charles Bridges is simply one of the most powerful books I've ever read. Virtually every page was helpful. Bridges' book is a theological and practical expose' on what it means to be a Christian pastor and preacher. It is significant that a book this old (1849) is still incredibly relevant. There are five parts to the book - let me give a quick run-down of each.I. In part one, Bridges covers the origin, institution, dignity, use, necessity, trials, difficulties, comforts, encouragements, and qualifications of the Christian ministry, along with four steps of preparation for the ministry: habits of general study, special study of the Scriptures, habits of special prayer, and employment in the cure of souls.II-III. Parts two and three deal with five general reasons and ten personal reasons why ministers are often ineffective. The general reasons include:1. the withholding of divine influence2. the enmity of the natural heart of man3. the power of Satan4. local hindrances5. and the lack of a Divine call to ministryThe personal reasons (i.e. causes of ministerial inefficiency connected with our personal character) are:1. want of entire devotedness of heart2. conformity to the world3. the fear of man4. the want of Christian self-denial5. the Spirit of covetousness6. neglect of retirement (time alone with God)7. the influence of spiritual pride8. the absence or defect of personal religion9. the defect of family relgion; and the want of connection of the Minister's family with his work10. lack of faithI can scarcely describe how heart-searching these chapters were. When I was working through these some months back, I felt very deep apprehension and fear over my personal accountability to God for the souls in my charge. I needed (still need) to feel that and Bridges pressed it into my heart like probably no author ever has. Those of you who know me best will readily see how much work yet needs to be done in my life regard to these ten things. Pray for me.IV. Part four of the book details the public work of the Christian Ministry. Much space is given to the task of preaching, including the institution and importance of preaching, and preparation for the pulpit. The last sections of the book I actually read were those detailing the Scriptural mode of preaching the Law and the Scriptural mode of preaching the Gopsel. I suppose I put these off, because I didn't think I would agree with Bridges on his view of the Law, but I actually benefited immensely. I just underlined and underlined and underlined. It is so rich. Then there are also chapters on the mode of preaching (addressing both topical and expository preaching and extempore and written sermons) and the "Spirit of Scriptural preaching" (broken down into seven qualities: boldness, wisdom, plainness, fervency, diligence, singleness, and love).V. Finally, part five deals with the Pastoral Work of the Christian Ministry, addressing first, the nature and importance of the pastoral work, and second how to treat specific cases in pastoral work (i.e. the infidel, the ignorant and careless, the self-righteous, the false professor, natural and spiritual convictions, the young Christian, the backslider, the unestablished Christian, and the confirmed and consistent Christian.) This was an especially helpful section, giving much encouragement to me in the midst of some challenging pastoral responsibilities, and also supplying much insight in how to apply the Word to specific kinds of people. It is impossible for me to do justice to the helpfulness of this book. I really know of nothing else quite like it, except maybe Spurgeon's Lectures to My Students. But I think this is even better than that - because of its focus not just on preaching, but on pastoral work. Brdiges is eloquent and full of the Gospel. Like Spurgeon said of Bunyan, he just bleeds Bible - prick him anywhere and his blood is bibline. He was also very well-read in the Patristics, the Reformers, and the Puritans, and quotes from their works often. There are lots of gems scattered throughout that it would be almost impossible for anyone to find elsewhere, unless they pursued a PhD in church history. Perhaps the best thing I can say is that the book has weight - gravity. It is a serious book, but serious in a joy-giving and helpful sort of way. If you are a pastor or elder (or want to be), I highly recommend that you read it.

Filling up what is lacking in pastoral resources By jarbitro Many books today are written critiquing the theological landscape of evangelicalism, and specifically the seeker-sensitive movement. These books almost universally contain calls for better preaching and better pastors. What is shocking is that most of them do not explain how to preach deeper sermons, nor do they seem aware that there is markedly more to shepherding than preaching. Many services are evaluated and rejected based on the kind of music (too loud) or the number of illustrations (too short). Authors who decry depth in evangelicalism seem ironically unaware of the depth of the pastoral office, and that it goes deeper than what is observed in a five minute snapshot. The Christian Ministry (TCM), by Charles Bridges shows an understanding of the pastoral ministry that avoids the traps common to modern-day authors. He recognizes the importance of preaching- indeed he spends two-thirds of his book on it- but he likewise shows that "not all the work is done in the study and in the pulpit" (343). He rightly calls pastors to better preaching, but unlike many modern books, Bridges explains how and why.TCM does not satisfy itself with a cursory look at its topics. It digs beneath the surface to show the exact reasons for failings in the ministry. Bridges shoots arrows at the pastor's heart when talking about laziness in ministry, and does not content himself with vague indictments. He gives specific examples of sin in pastors, examples that convict even the most stalwart to the quick. His section on pride in young ministers (71, 328) did not just call pastors not to be prideful; rather he gave sample conversations and thoughts that are sinful, and then showed what exactly it is about pastoral ministry that opens itself up to these charges. His description of the young convert described the early stages of my faith better that I could have, and he showed why this is so. Every topic covered shows this kind of depth. [A lone exception is his treatment of the infidel (362), where he lapses into a Pascal's Wager type of argument- notable for its uniqueness in the book.]The subjects covered are properly mixed with both practical advice and theological correctness. For example, he shows how a hindrance of effectiveness in ministry is the lack of God's blessing, and follows it with a call for pastors not to be lazy. Later he admonishes pastors to preach the entire "chain of salvation," by which he means the doctrines of grace. He immediately follows that call with a charge to be extremely practical in preaching, lest the congregation not understand what is expected of them (268). That section shows the unique danger Calvinistic preachers have, and it shows why their theology sometimes tempts them to avoid application in their sermons. His call to avoid that trap cannot help but resonate in the minds of young preachers. Bridges shows theologically why prayer is important to the preacher, but he then shows practically how to make prayer a priority in preaching (214-6).This was not a perfect book. Written during the genesis of dispensationalism, Bridges shows familiarity with dispensationalism's teachings (he even uses their vocabulary), but seems to intentionally not be dubious about his view of it. At one point he says that those who teach it show "arrogance" and that it leaves a "black cloud" on the future of the church. But he likewise insinuates that it is the future of the church (54).TCM, through its in-depth treatment of its subjects that is both honest and powerful, shows that it rightly has been retained as the bench-mark for books on pastoral ministry. It is helpful, thorough, complex, and highly recommended.

Great Value, Average Production By paulregent.blogspot I don't want to review the actual contents of Mr. Bridges' masterpiece; if you're considering purchasing this book, then surely sovereignty has prepared you and you know its worth. I rather want to give a heads up on the production. The amazing price should be a giveaway that the book is very no frills: generic front cover, completely blank back cover, and yes: this is one of those "scan copy" books (where an older version is scanned and then reprinted; complete with smudge marks on some of the page borders). I suspected as much when I saw the amazing price, and for me, the book was still totally worth the $9.99. This is 550 pages of Christian wisdom after all. The biggest disappointment is that the table of contents is cut off. Being that this is a lengthy book, the table of contents probably spanned out over 3 or 4 pages. Only the last page, covering the contents of page 394 to the end of the book, made it in. So you're left with a really big book and no way to reference it. This is a book that should be read cover to cover but also has the potential to just be a reference for specific issues when needed. Without a full table of contents, that will be difficult. Is it the end of the world? No, but it was worth sharing just so you're aware. And I still say it's worth the 10 bucks, but if you really need the table, consider a used copy of an earlier edition.
