Ellis is obsessed with the spiders that inhabit the crumbling house where he lives with his dad, his older sister and Great-Aunt Mafi - and by a need to find out more about his mother, whose death overshadows the family's otherwise happy existence.

He is a sensitive soul - awkward and out of place most of the time but funny, too, and with an embarrassing habit of speaking his thoughts aloud, whatever the company. From early attempts at relationships to unskilled jobs, flatshares and drug-addled nights on the beach, Ellis muddles his way towards adulthood. What endures is the strength of his bond with his dad, Denny, and his affectionate relationship with his intrepid sister, who turns up whenever he needs her - a new boyfriend in tow every time.

The family banter is Ellis' lifeline and a counterpoint to the constant heartache of his desire to know something - anything - about his mother. Meanwhile Denny, an ex-Merchant Navy man, bottles up his grief at the loss of his wife, refusing to talk about her.

Buried Alive, by Arnold Bennett

About the Author Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor’s clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women’s magazine. After the publication of his first novel, ‘A Man from the North’ in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including ‘Anna of the Five Towns’, ‘The Old Wives' Tale’, ‘Clayhanger’, ‘The Card’ and ‘Hilda Lessways’ followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the ‘New Statesman’. Bennett’s great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the ‘Five Towns’. ‘Anna of the Five Towns’ and ‘The Old Wives’ Tale’ show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as ‘The Grand Babylon Hotel’ and ‘The Card’. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

This is a delightful tale and one that deserves a wider audience. The book served as the basis of a little-known Broadway musical in the 1960s called "Darling of the Day," by Jule Styne and E.Y. Harburg, starring Vincent Price and Patricia Routledge (best known for her TV show "Keeping Up Appearances"). The book and the musical are sweet and endearing, two adjectives that may turn off some modern readers, but it's their loss.

I would give it more than 5 stars if I had a choice.. this is a delightful book about an extremely talented but painfully shy artist who is willing to go to any length to remain in the shadows.. I will not give away any of the main delight of this book, but please read it and enjoy it!!Buy it, borrow it or check it out the library..

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Farce By disco75 Arnold Bennett has fashioned a fine satire that brings to mind "Being There," except here the protagonist falls into a chain of events that threatens to expose his talents when all he wants-- Garbo-esque-- is to be "left alone." The novel skewers the art world, artists' temperaments, celebrity, and the way humans view the foibles of their loved ones. Bennett's better-known masterpiece "The Old Wives Tale" contained vignettes and observations of humor, but in "Buried Alive" he proves adept at an all-out comedy. I'm so glad I found this volume, it shows that Bennett had more than one excellent book in him, and led me to the also humorous "The Card." "Buried Alive" is definitely one of my favorite 20 novels.

The Man I Love And Me, by Willis Burris

About the Author Willis Burris is an international man: by vision and experience. He is a Caribbean born accountant, economist, educator and now the author of his first non-fiction book, The Man I Love & Me. Willis is one of ten children from the union of Anderson Burris and Augustina (John) Burris, birthed and raised in Tobago. As a young boy, he accepted a previously unknown religion along with the other members of his family. Willis was first educated at the village primary school before attending high school at the most prestigious institute on the island. In high school, he focused his studies primarily on scientific subjects and literature. While at Bishop’s High School, he became the head prefect, head cadet officer, and captain of Bowles House, one of the student-body’s four challenge groups. Willis was also a talented cricketer throughout elementary and high school. After brief stints with a state utility company and a leading commercial bank in Tobago, Willis moved to Trinidad to work for a family-owned company. He then studied Advanced Level Economics and reoriented his academic efforts on accounting, economics and business management. In 1987, Willis migrated to the United States of America (USA) to attend York College in New York, graduating in 1990. After college, Willis worked in Manhattan as a corporate accountant and later married Jamaican born educator, Beverley March. He then completed a Master of Business Administration degree at Pace University. After a few more years of living and working in the USA, Beverley and Willis migrated to Israel for five years, where he again worked in high level accounting, finance and investment management. The couple returned to the United States in 2002, first settling in Georgia and then Illinois, where Willis was an Assistant Controller of accounting. Seeking a warmer climate, they later moved to the “Sunshine State” of Florida in 2007, where he worked as a Corporate Controller of financial operations. In 2009, Willis fulfilled a life-long dream and entered the field of education. He was selected “Rookie Teacher of the Year” after his first year of teaching by the Seminole County Public Schools Board, in Florida, an “A” rated school district. Willis also holds a diploma in education for grades K-12 (kindergarten through twelfth grade), with four subject area specialties. He currently resides near Orlando, Florida with his wife Beverley.

TMILAM - The Man I Love & Me By Peter Conn I have just read a deeply engaging heartfelt account of a village father's life story and legacy as seen through the eyes of his successful globe trotting son. Set against the background of a Caribbean island, Tobago, this is biography and autobiography, and is rich in heartfelt accolades. Many readers will find, as I did, Willis's testimonials to the power of family and his father uplifting, and will come away inspired and convinced that true progress can be achieved with a patriarch of the caliber of Mr. Burris Sr. A delightful, refreshing read, The Man I Love And Me

People who have had great and loving parents are usually humble enough to credit them with an impact on their life which led to them becoming and developing into the people they did. Looking at the biography of Mr Burris and hearing of the loving and supportive relationship he had with his father, one can easily saw how he was encouraged by that love to achieve what he has achieved.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Man I Love and Me By Amazon Customer Dear Willis,I have completed my reading of “The Man I Love and Me”. As you know, this was no small feat since the book was commandeered by my mother upon its delivery and I was told in no uncertain terms that “I should not wait on it as she was going to read it first and then give it to me”! (smile)When I was finally granted permission to lay hands upon the book, it was officially turned over with this declaration from mother dearest: “God will bless him for the love he has for his father and family. I liked the book, it was very good. He came from humble beginnings and never forgot his roots. He is a good man”.Brother Willobee, like mother like daughter, I also share her sentiments after experiencing the vivid memories of a grateful son for the first example set for him, by his father, of what it means to be a gentleman of character. There were so many, many emotions that I navigated as a reader who, like you, is a descendant of the peoples making up our dearly loved Caribbean. The book made me smile. Made me cry. Made me laugh out loud. Made me reflective and grateful. And it made me proud to have the bounty of sharing in the unbreakable bond of deep love and respect that was shared between you and your father. As part of the baby-boomer generation who adopted a value system that equates self worth with material wealth, to read of the spirit of joy, fun, camaraderie, discipline, love, respect and nobility your parents instilled in their family of ten; to relive the sheer enjoyment that children of our age in the islands had, every day of their lives, simply by partaking of Mother Nature’s freely given gifts; to read a phrase or sentence and have my own childhood memories come bursting through to the present; to be reminded of the shared culture and history of these tiny islands dotting the Caribbean sea, when you describe the majestic and non-pretentious beauty of village life; to relive the simple and genuine spirit of family our island people carry for each other, especially in small rural communities; and to be awed by the sweetness, intricacy, depth, rhythm, wit, brilliance and sensual nature of our island dialects, all combined to swell my spirit with gratitude for the profound lessons your book offers to readers. If you had not written this book then you would have done a grave disservice to the living legacy of an ordinary man who, through the courage of his conviction, the passion of his faith, the strength of his steadfastness and the sacrificial efforts of his unwavering labour, proved that extraordinary achievements and examples can be had by anyone who is willing to live his/her life based on the principles of justice, truth and generosity. This is a book about the undaunting power of love and faith and persistent effort to transform a “gnat into an eagle” and to raise up within one generation a new race of man reflecting the Light of goodness that is shinning from Mount Carmel.Well done and thank you so very much for the gift of this love story between father and son!Debbie Kirton

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun little book. By Joe Doaks This material was probably introduced at a much earlier grade level in 1888 that it would be today, and the mildly condescending style seems geared for upper elementary students. This is also an unabashedly Protestant account, and some of the editorializing can be rather amusing. There are a few factual errors too.Having said that however, this is a pretty good introduction to that neglected patch of history we used to call the Dark Ages. Emerton follows the Gothic peoples migrations, cursorily explores Gremanic Law, and generally respects the historian's duty to see History as interlocking dynamic processes. This is an easy read that should promote a desire for further inquiry - on the whole, a Good Thing.

Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass (Illustrated) (1000 Copy Limited Edition), by Lewis Carroll

About the Author Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Best known for his classics Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky, Carroll was also an accomplished inventor who created an early version of what is today known as Scrabble. The publication of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 brought Carroll a certain level of fame, although he continued to supplement his income through his work as a mathematics tutor at Christ Church, Oxford College. Carroll s whimsical characters and nonsensical verse resonated with Victorian-era readers, and his books continue to be enjoyed by numerous modern societies dedicated to his promoting his works.

Best Ebook PDF Thigh Gap and the Vow of Poverty: Poems by Jes C. Kuhn, by Jes C. Kuhn

Jes C. Kuhn's startling and striking debut volume of poetry, "Thigh Gap and the Vow of Poverty", is a kaleidoscopic balance of realism and the abstract, where poverty and capitalism are in constant battle, where issues such as suicide, adultery, widows, ghosts, fatherhood, domesticated technological absurdities, all shrouded in tarry humor and grave plot pondering, populate the pages in intoxicating, reflective chaos. He may draw potential stylistic connections to the sour grit of Bukowski or the hallucinatory bite of Lorca, but Kuhn writes in a raw and ultra-modern voice, redefining poetry line by pulsing line for the modern reader. Kuhn's words represent the true outlaw art, a spectral rainbow in a creative writing cemetery, placing a newly painted mask on the skeleton face of American poetry.

By Renee Brous I might not have purchased "New Studies...' if I had realized that it was written literally 150 years ago. But it was interesting to compare a doctor of divinity of his day with those of today. Very little has changed but he was less accepting of ALL of the practices - especially automatic writting. Versus Echo Bodine who seems to think everything is of God.

By GeoX There's a good reason that this is commonly used as an introduction to Balzac: it's one of his best and most focused works (not that I've read them all, of course...). He wasn't a wholly consistent author (and neither would *you* be, had you written 120+ novels)--at times, he can be downright tedious. Not here, though: Old Goriot is a fast read, and utterly gripping. The character of Goriot is handled quite delicately: Balzac plays mercilessly on our sympathy for an old man victimized by his daughters (intentional shades of King Lear here). It's not a uni-dimensional depiction, however; as Goriot's boundless love seems at times to go beyond the merely paternal--he may be a Christ-figure, but he's certainly not a straightforward one. Of course, the real show-stealer here is Vautrin, the master criminal. As much as Balzac fancied himself a historian, he was really at his most entertaining when he went over the top, as he does here: Vautrin is wonderfully demonic, and one can't but get a kick out of reading him. In contrast to these twin personalities, which tower above anyone else in the book, you have the titular protagonist, Eugene de Rastignac, a perfectly ordinary sort of guy--your archetypical 'young man from the provinces'. He provides a good counterpoint to all the madness going on, and you can't help but like the guy, even if he's not really an extraordinary person.Anyway: you should read this. Yes--YOU. I mean come on, you really ought to read at least one Balzac in your life. And if you like it, you can go on to Lost Illusions and Cousin Bette. Highly recommended.

In terms of the variety of characters it introduces and the themes covered, it is a novel of incredibly wide scope, written with efficiency and some of the most beautiful prose, at least via Marion Crawford's English translation.Goriot is an elderly gentleman living in a Paris boardinghouse in 1819. He used to be a prosperous vermicelli merchant, but hard times of late have forced him to pawn off his remaining precious possessions and move into the cheapest room available in the house. Since running afoul of the landlady Madame Vauquer, whose romantic attentions he once spurned, he has become an object of ridicule to the other boarders, due to his shabby clothes and apparent senility. Most of the novel's action, however, centers around another of the boarders, a law student named Eugene de Rastignac who comes from a modest family. Rastignac's situation and motives are easy for any urban young man to identify with: He is eager to climb into the upper echelons of Paris society, but he finds to his dismay that the fashionable Parisian women are not interested in paupers. His wealthy cousin, Madame de Beauseant, advises him that he must be ruthless to make it in high society. With his cousin's help, Rastignac acquaints himself with two young society matrons, Anastasie, the Countess de Restaud, and Delphine, the Baroness de Nucingen, who happen to be Goriot's daughters.Goriot's relationship to his daughters provides the basis for the novel. He spoiled them rotten as little girls; consequently, they grew up irresponsible, greedy, and ungrateful. Having married wealthy men, they both seek consolation from their unhappy marriages through reckless spending and extramarital beaus. Despite their faults, Goriot loves and cares for his daughters with something more like a neurotic obsession than warm, paternal devotion. You can't help feel sorry for the guy, suffering from his delusions, selling everything he owns, and living in squalor so that his daughters, who are unable or unwilling to fend for themselves or fight their own battles, can stay financially solvent. There is an interesting subplot involving another boarder at Madame Vauquer's house, a devilish, unscrupulous fellow named Vautrin who may not be what he initially appears to be. Vautrin knows Rastignac is trying to get his foot in the door of Parisian society and he knows he needs money to do it. He proposes this scheme: Rastignac will marry a poor girl dwelling at the boardinghouse named Victorine; Vautrin will have Victorine's brother killed so that she'll inherit the whole of her father's fortune, which will bring Rastignac into big money and high society, and he can pay Vautrin for collusion. The way Balzac plays out this scenario without letting it become an interference with the main story line of Rastignac's relationship to Goriot's daughters is quite a deft feat of plotting.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Inadequate Translation of GORIOT By reading man The problem here is the translation. Done by Ellen Marriage for the Dent collected edition of Balzac at the beginning of the 20th century, it can be best described as workwomanlike but anachronistic. There are too many stilted passages and archaic word choices of the "Gadzooks" type.A better choice is Raphael's version for the Nortion series or even Marian Cooper's in Penguin, though it was done 50 years ago.The yarn itself is one of Balzac's best, though you can find dissenters (Martin Turnell, no fan of Balzac, calls it one of his worst in THE NOVEL IN FRANCE). To be honest, the best of Balzac is not as good as the best of Flaubert, Stendhal, or Proust, but given his ability to keep the reader turning pages in spite of ragged prose and melodramatic excess, GORIOT is still "living literature" and a classic of French literature.

His works are unlike anything I have read in early English Literature. His very original attitude and way of speaking his mind makes him who he is. A must read for any reader who wants to be entertained!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. "It was the sound of a good, solid, absolutely British `Damn!'" By Bernie I first saw several movie versions of "The Scarlet Pimpernel" and always wanted to see the Play. With the purchase of a Kindle and text-to-speech I could not afford to pass up the book.I was amazed to see that the book started out like the movies with the telling of the blood lust of the French revolution and how one man for the sport of it saved many from the guillotine thwarting the authorities and tricking the sergeant at the city gate into letting him through. Then I was afraid the story was going to bog down as we took a long time to drudge through a scene in an inn. I did not realize that this was to introduce the major players in the soon to be mystery. The essence of the story was best said in the book:"Only between these two hearts there lay a strong, impassable barrier, built up on pride on both sides, which neither of them cared to be the first to demolish."The story really picks up after Marguerite realizes what she has done by giving away the pimpernels identity and disides to make amends.Usually I cannot stand flowery writing or long descriptions of feelings. But for some reason this book was so well written that what would seem like extraneous information actually enhanced the tale. I also noticed it is told mostly from Lady Blakeney's point of view.Once again this is a case of the book being better than the movie. I was surprise to find the Pimpernel poem came from the book:They seek him here they seek him thereThem Frenchies seek him everywhere. Is he in Heaven? Is he in Hell? That damned elusive pimpernel.

I haven't started reading it yet, and am wondering how hard it will be to keep my place with the lines going all the way across each page, but other than that, I like it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Races of Britain By Cwn_Annwn Although I don't agree with a lot of his conclusions Beddoe does pretty good at classifying and trying to trace the origins of various common racial phenotypes in the British Isles. Even he admits there is a lot of guesswork and theorizing involved in this. I believe this was written in the 1920s, so while he wasn't saddled with having to toe the line of political correctness, he also had the disadvantage of not being able to use dna tests/comparisons as a tool.
